Finally decided to pick up Skids! I was originally not gonna get this one, but I have a special place in my heart for Skids, because Alternators Skids was one of my favorite figures.
It’s definitely not without it’s flaws though. I’m mostly in favor of the toon aesthetic, I DO like the older aesthetic as well, so when he was announced I was genuinely excited, until I saw more of the promo pics. This release just seems REALLY lazy to me.
I absolutely hate how the head just kinda floats above an empty space and how the arms break the sculpt a little when you swing them up. At most angles, he’s kind of an eyesore to look at. TT honestly could’ve made better design decisions imo. Like a mechanism that moves his head more onto his body or a more aesthetically pleasing arm rotation.

That being said, the alt mode is absolutely gorgeous and perfect!

Don’t get me wrong, I do really like this figure and it has the same special place in my heart like Alternators Skids—that’s why I broke down and got it—but it just could’ve been done better.

Optional Prime

I don't know why, but Reboost always occurred to me as the perfect re-imagination of Cliffjumper, if one wanted to get rid of that Chibi thing (which just doesn't work for my personal MP collection… I need realistic cars!)

A small, slightly overcharged car that overconfidently tries to keep up with the real sports cars, while looking a little too short/chibi to convincingly play in that league. Cute enough that people will keep it along, and surprisingly agile when need be… yep, sounds like Cliffjumper to me.

Now, where can I find a good head transplant?

Looking closely at my Skids and Reboost, I actually don't think the headlights are keyed. Or if they are, there's slight play there. Both headlights on my Skids are tipped slightly down-right (his right), while Reboost's are mildly angry.

its one of those issues thats not terrible enough to annoy me.

also tried rotating a piece of rubber on it to force it round, also no joy.

had a look around the inside of the engine bay on mine. the headlight enclosures seem to be one way access only.

i think the only way would be to pry the headlight away.

or manually rotate it to see what happens (tried this with my thumb… not sure if it made much difference)

absolutely love this figure, the lil motocompo is a nice touch (have not figured out how to release the handlebars back out yet).

have a lil issue though which i have also noticed on some video reviews of this mold (specifically emgo's review of skids) the headlights dont seem to be aligned properly.

ill put photos up when i get home but if you watch his review you will see the lines inside the 2 x lights are not symmetrical to eachother.

anyone know if this can be fixed? i would like to know how they are attached. if its just glue then its an easy fix.

also noticed most of the photos on here already dont have this issue.

i have attached a sshot from the above mentioned video.

Yeah, the one on the toy’s right is noticeably off-kilter. It looks like there MIGHT be enough clearance in the engine compartment to get at the headlight from behind if you use a tool of some sort.

Really milk the shit out of this mould. I’m still debating if I want to get Crosscut despite how expensive he is, this guy’s just that good.

It’s weird to own a modern TF without that “one thing.” You know, where one thing spoils it/holds it back? Transformation, articulation, solidity, QC, one crucial aspect that’s not up to par and gets in the way of everything else. Skids isn’t perfect, but he doesn’t have that “one thing” and it’s so… refreshing.

I agree— it’s a very good design. I still prefer MP Reboost because of the Diaclone aesthetic, and I would absolutely buy a toy-deco Skids if TT issued one (fingers crossed). I’m probably going to pass on Crosscut only because I own and really enjoy XTB Herald. I see no reason to have both, but if Takara decides to milk the mold and offer other Diaclone variants, I’ll most likely buy them because I enjoy the design so much. I felt the same way about the Datsuns and bought the hell out of those.

SPLIT LIP

It's definitely the best execution of a non-toy-style head so far, though I still want the darker color, yellow eyes, Optimus-like "ears", and a chiseled jutting chin. I'm hoping to customize mine in a way that leans that direction, but I seriously fear I'm going to FUBAR it.

Zentropy

For me, I think it's the "sporty" flare it has to it. That smooth-contoured, up-swept angle of the helmet as you go back reminds me of something like a bike helmet, and gives the otherwise basic head design a rather unique flair to it. It's a very striking re-interpretation of his animation model.

Of Skids' head designs, I much prefer his toy helmet over his animation design. But I think the MP design trumps either, for me. Simple elegance.

I'm really surprised by how much I love the headsculpt. For such a simple design it has great depth to it. This could've been such a flat, boring design, but making the "cap" jut out and the cheek guards to be set so far back, along with the deep-set eyes just adds so much. It could only be better if the mouth was a bit sharper.
