The fan-created LEGO sets inspired by video games get declined by the LEGO Ideas team, despite having more than 10,000 supporters.

Video game fans will be disappointed to hear that a number of gaming-related LEGO sets will not be making their way onto store shelves any time soon, according to a recent announcement from the LEGO Ideas team.

Between the months of January to May 2021, people were able to vote on a number of fan creations added to the LEGO Ideas website, with those reaching 10,000 supporters being considered by the company’s decision-makers to become official LEGO products. A number of video game-inspired creations reached the 10,000 milestone, including Hyrule Castle from The Legend of Zelda, an Animal Crossing: New Horizons set, Samus’ Gunship from Metroid and a replica of an Among Us map. However, none of these submissions made the cut.

LEGO Ideas Design Manager Samuel Johnson and LEGO Model Designer Laura Perron discussed the various criteria the company’s review board considers when deciding which submissions will make it onto store shelves. These factors include products currently on sale, new products that are in development, licensing possibilities and many others, which can be viewed in full in a video announcement on LEGO’s website.

Out of the 57 ideas, only 2 have been officially approved: a set based on the television series The Office and a model of a jazz quartet. Meanwhile, a Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set entered a state of proverbial limbo, as Laura stated, "We can still reveal that Snow White and the Seven Dwarves by Harry Hanwasyellowfirst [Harry Finkel] is still being reviewed by the review board. We’ve seen a version of this model before in a review, and we’re happy to see it again reach 10,000 votes. Unfortunately, a lot of things had to go into consideration when choosing this to go into production, and we haven’t quite ticked off all those boxes yet, so it’s still in the process, and we’ll give you an update in early 2022."

This is the second time the Snow White set has gone under review, which will give video game fans hope that the creations LEGO declined this time around could still find their way onto shelves in the future. Nevertheless, it seems they will have to wait until next year to be resubmitted, as the company already revealed its next batch of fan-proposed ideas, which will be under review until early 2022. Although, sadly this selection does not feature any video game entries. However, during the announcement, it was confirmed that a Sonic Mania set is currently in development, although a release date is not yet confirmed.

Among Us is a great game that has taken the YouTube and gaming community by storm – I fell in love with it when I started playing it. This LEGO Ideas project is the culmination of hours of work: research, designing, and finally getting ready for the project release!

This is the first and only LEGO Ideas project that features a complete, detailed recreation of the entire map known as "The Skeld" – generally considered the main map of the game. Explore the various rooms and complete your tasks, but watch out! Don't get stabbed by an impostor, and be sure to keep an eye out for sabotages!

Every interactive detail from the game has been replicated in the model, from the press-able emergency button and open-able vents to countless tasks and sabotages across the build! I referenced a detailed map of the in-game Skeld when building it, so every task (including wires, manifolds, downloads, power diversions, engine refueling, and more) is present! There are even special play features for the weapons room (firing cannons), shields (light-up shield generator), and trash disposal (it actually ejects mini LEGO trash pieces!) I've even included the in-game map for comparison in one of the pictures.

If minifigures are what you like, 12 are included in this project – each one comes with the corresponding color in the game, so no matter what color you choose (white, black, blue, red, green, yellow, lime, orange, brown, cyan, pink, or purple) there's a figure available for you!

The Among Us LEGO mod allows crewmates and Impostors to collect LEGO and build houses, cars, rockets, and even rebuild fallen crewmates.

While most Among Us mods introduce roles with new abilities for crewmates and Impostors to use during a match, some of the more interesting mods introduce entirely new mechanics both crewmates and Impostors can experience. One of the latest Among Us mods is the LEGO Mod. Crewmates and Impostors change from their rounded bean shape to a blocky style. All around the map, crewmates and Impostors can find piles of LEGO blocks in varying quantities to collect. Each time they collect more LEGO, they grow in size and can use these blocks to build vehicles and structures. While all players have access to some of the new powers, the Impostor can use these in new and unexpected ways to sabotage and kill crewmates or build a small army of Impostor minions.

Even with access to most of the same abilities, it is difficult for crewmates to win when playing the Among Us LEGO Mod. This is due in part to a new mechanic that allows crewmates and Impostors to rebuild fallen crewmates, as long as they have enough LEGO blocks in their inventory. If a fellow crewmate rebuilds a fallen crewmate, gameplay continues normally. However, if the Impostor rebuilds the fallen crewmate, similar to the Among Us Zombies Mod they also become a second Impostor. Though every player has the ability to rebuild only once, Impostors can easily direct their new minions to kill and resurrect more crewmates on their behalf. Here's how to play the LEGO Mod for Among Us.

How to Play with LEGO in Among Us

The Among Us LEGO Mod was created by Sub & Fletch and demonstrated by creator SSundee and his friends. Currently, it not available for public download. Players may have luck getting into a game that uses this mod by joining a server that has it installed. Players can also always try their hand at programming a version. It is also possible that, given its popularity, other modders will eventually program a version of this mod and make it available for wider use.

Using the LEGO Mod in Among Us, crewmates and Impostors can both collect any LEGO bricks they find on the map. The more they collect, the larger their character sprite grows. Everyone playing the game will also have access to the following abilities:

House: Drop a traditional LEGO house on a crewmate or Impostor to box them in for several seconds, preventing escape and allowing crewmates to run away or Impostors to make a quick kill.
Rocket: With enough LEGO blocks saved, crewmates and Impostors can build a rocket that zooms off the map, allowing them to see every room and choose where to go next. Impostors may also crash this rocket into crewmates to kill them.
Car: With enough LEGO blocks saved, crewmates and Impostors can build a LEGO car and drive around the map. They have greater movement speed than they would by simply walking.
LEGO-Step: Crewmates or Impostors can place LEGO mines around the map. When a crewmate places a LEGO mine and it is stepped on, they erupt, losing all their collected LEGO blocks and returning to their small starting size. When an Impostor places a LEGO mine and it is stepped on, the crewmate is killed.
Rebuild: Crewmates and Impostors can rebuild one player per match, as long as they have collected enough LEGO blocks. Rebuilt crewmates are not allowed to talk, and crewmates who are rebuilt by Impostors become Impostors themselves.

Impostors also still have access to the regular Sabotage and Kill buttons. It is important to note that crewmates who are killed the classic way can still be rebuilt by another crewmate or the Impostor.

Typically, Impostors will Rebuild one fallen crewmate and turn them into a second Impostor. Then, that second Impostor will use their Rebuild ability after killing another crewmate to turn them into an Impostor. This can occur for a while until there are too many Impostors in the lobby and they begin to outnumber the crewmates. At this point, the game will end, registering as a lobby disconnect. This means the Impostor has won. Crewmates can try to stop this endless army by planting mines that cause Impostors to lose their LEGO blocks, preventing them from using Rebuild. They can also try to win with tasks.

Have your kids gotten into playing Among Us yet? My 14 year old son recently discovered this game after friends invited him to play. We are not big gamers at all… we’ve really limited video game playing and electronics use in general, and I don’t regret that at all. However, we did say yes to Among Us, and it has turned out to be a good social outlet during a time when we can’t get together with people in person as much as usual.

What is Among Us?

Among Us is a murder mystery game, kind of like the group game Mafia. It takes place in outer space with little beings in spacesuits (called Crewmates). It contains cartoon violence. During each round, the host (the person who starts the game) chooses the number of Impostors. The game randomly chooses which players will be Impostors. The Impostors try to kill the other players and take over the ship. The Crewmates are trying to figure out who the Impostors are so that they can vote them off the ship.

Before we get to the LEGO building challenge, here are my two tips about the game:

Buy the ad-free version! It’s worth it to not have kids dealing with ads. You’ll need to download the game first (free), and then pay to upgrade the game to the ad-free version.
Require your kids to play the game with people they know, not random strangers on the internet.

That second tip is entirely up to you, of course, but I just feel like there are SO many risks in kids starting up conversations with people they meet online in that type of format.

The app recommends the game for kids ages 9+, which I think sounds about right.

My 14 year old decided to build some Among Us projects to share with you all, and I think they turned out super cute!

Build your Crewmates in all different colors! You can also build some fun hats for them.

Here are the pieces you need to build an Among Us Crewmate:

Choose whatever color you’d like your Crewmate (or Impostor) to be! Blue, red, yellow, etc.

Step 1: Place two 1 x 1 bricks with a stud on the side on top of a 2 x 3 brick. There should be a stud facing out on both the front and the back.

Step 2: Add a 1 x 2 brick on each side. Then cover those with a 2 x 3 plate.

Step 3: Add a 1 x 2 plate and a 1 x 2 plate with one stud on top (also called a jumper plate).

Step 4: Finish up the head by adding a 1 x 2 slope (30 degree) on each side. Then add a 1 x 2 tile. We used light blue, but white also works.

Step 5: Stack two 2 x 3 plates and add attach them to the back of the Crewmate to make their backpack thing.

Then it’s fun to build some of the rooms in the spaceship!

My son designed a couple of scenes from the game. This one is the O2 room.

And this one is the Medbay.

I think it would be fun to do an Among Us LEGO building challenge with a class or LEGO club! It would be fun to see everyone’s creations. Maybe work together to create a full ship layout!
