Many of us have a collection of Lego gathering dust in a cupboard somewhere, begging to be transformed into something amazing. Using Brickit, you can now fulfill its wish.

Next year, Lego will celebrate 90 years since it was founded in a Danish carpentry workshop back in 1932. Almost a century later, it remains one of the most popular kids toys across the world and it still takes up huge chunks of the toy section in many stores. Over time, Lego has moved further and further away from the simple sets of bricks that it became known for. These days, the elaborate sets that you can build are composed of thousands of pieces that come in all shapes and sizes and it's easy to be overwhelmed by what’s on offer.

For many of us however, Lego is a big box containing a jumble of random bricks, each belonging to structures that were dismantled long ago. With the instruction manuals long gone, building more than a simple house feels like a daunting prospect. But what if you could scan all of the random pieces and be told exactly what you could make with them? This was the dream for the team behind Brickit, a new app that is inspiring kids and adults alike to build new creations from their old Lego. The process is very straightforward: simply lay out your bricks, point your camera at the unruly heap, and let Brickit do all the work for you. It will scan each individual piece, identify it, and then figure out which of Lego’s many sets you can build from what you have on hand. It will even tell you which bricks are missing.

As well as identifying the various bits in the pile, it will also provide you with illustrations of them in a similar vein to the official Lego instruction manuals. If you’re unsure of where to find these pieces in the undoubtedly huge pile, fear not because the app will then highlight each one in the original photo. As a result, building the proposed sets – assuming you have the correct bricks – becomes a relatively quick and easy task. Though, if you don’t have the right pieces to make any of the sets, you can attempt them anyway, substituting missing pieces for others that you have in your arsenal. This stage might require a bit of thinking outside the box but, as Lego’s original tagline goes: “Just Imagine…”

Brickit is currently available to download on the App Store, with an Android version coming autumn 2021.

Все понравившиеся инструкции можно объединить в коллекцию для быстрого доступа к ним.

Готовый результат пользователь может сфотографировать напрямую через приложение, а затем поделиться изображением с друзьями. Завершенные работы сохраняются в отдельной папке. Разработчики Brickit предупреждают, что их продукт не является официальным приложением от LEGO, а представляет собой фанатскую программу, которая, тем не менее, регулярно улучшается и обновляется.

Once you’ve downloaded the free app, all you need to do is spread out your LEGO bricks on the ground so that all the pieces are visible. Open up the AI camera inside Brickit and point it at the LEGO from above — the app will then use machine learning to scan the scene at an incredibly fast pace and recognize as many bricks as it can.

When the app is done taking inventory of your collection, it’ll output a list of ideas for you of what you could possibly create with the bricks at your fingertips. You can customize the suggested build with different colors and bricks if you’d like to add a personal touch.

Most LEGO aficionados probably have a giant pile of plastic pieces somewhere that they plan to organize “some day.” It’s hard to plan what to build when your LEGO bricks are in a jumble, but thanks to a fan-made app called Brickit, you won’t have to spend hours searching for the right pieces. The app uses AI technology to scan your cluttered collection of LEGO components and give you customizable suggestions on what to build from them.

To use Brickit, all you have to do is point your smartphone at your LEGO pieces using the app’s built-in AI camera. The app then rapidly scans the area and tries to recognize as many bricks as it can. The more people that use it, the smarter the machine learning app can become, and the more LEGO bricks it will recognize.

Once the app has finished taking an inventory of your LEGO collection, it will output a number of build ideas that you can make a physical reality using the pieces right in front of you. It will even point out exactly where the bricks are in the pile, so you don’t have to spend long searching for them.

Brickit doesn’t just suggest making simple designs such as LEGO trains and little houses. The app is extremely creative when it comes to LEGO builds. So far, its suggestions have included dogs, typewriters, cameras, boomboxes, and tiny synthesizers. You can even customize the suggested designs with different colors and bricks. And when you’re finished, the app also includes a section for you to take a photo and share your build with friends.
