Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness, Avengers

Phase 4 has set the stage for the Multiverse to become integral to the future of the MCU with both Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home taking full advantage of the concept. Fans have already been treated to Variants of the God of Mischief and Spider-Man, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness expected to be packed with even more.

The Multiverse blockbuster has a stacked cast including Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Wong, America Chavez, Baron Mordo, and Dr. Christine Palmer. Although the highly-anticipated sequel is expected to be packed with plenty more surprise appearances with the latest trailer hinting at Patrick Stewart's Professor X and a Captain Marvel Variant.

Reshoots conducted toward the end of last year reportedly added even more cameos to the film, and amid rumors of a Multiverse Illuminati, new evidence has hinted at two more Avengers showing up.

Did LEGO Spoil Two Doctor Strange Cameos?

Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness, Avengers

Marvel

Rumors indicate the Minifigure line-up for the $210 USD model will include three Doctor Strange Variants, Wanda Maximoff, Baron Mordo, Iron Man, and Spider-Man. The LEGO leak potentially spoils appearances of the wall-crawler and armored Avenger in the highly-anticipated sequel, although it's unclear if the set is inspired by Multiverse of Madness.

Are Iron Man and Spider-Man in Multiverse of Madness?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has long been reported to be packed with cameos from Variants of fan-favorite heroes, with Iron Man and Spider-Man being among the top contenders.

Iron Man has been rumored for a role in the Multiverse epic for a while now, although Robert Downey Jr. isn't expected to be the actor in the suit. Having initially been in contention for the role in the early days of the MCU, Tom Cruise will reportedly appear in Multiverse of Madness as a Tony Stark Variant and a member of the Illuminati.

Doctor Strange recently teamed up with three Spider-Man Variants in No Way Home, making Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland plausible contenders to appear in the Multiverse-hopping adventure. Recent rumors have pointed to Maguire being the Peter Parker to join the highly-anticipated sequel, and given his Marvel history with director Sam Raimi, he would be the most logical choice of the three.

The latest LEGO leak appears to confirm reports of the two Avengers tagging along for Multiverse of Madness, but it may not be quite that obvious. While LEGO has a long-standing history of spoiling Marvel blockbusters, a set releasing so close to the Doctor Strange sequel would be unlikely to include any of the surprise cameos to maintain the intense secrecy.

When it came to keeping No Way Home's biggest surprises under wraps, the adjacent LEGO releases were almost devoid of movie-based content as they omitted most of the Multiverse villains or alternate Spider-Men. Marvel Studios will almost certainly look to maintain the same level of surprise and secrecy with Multiverse of Madness.

Fans will have to wait until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6, 2022 to discover whether Spider-Man or Iron Man makes an appearance.

Doctor Strange 2 Easter Eggs trailer

Marvel Studios is in the fast lane towards Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. After debuting its first teaser as the second post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Stephen Strange's sophomore solo installment dropped its second trailer immediately following its Super Bowl TV spot. This comes roughly three months before Multiverse of Madness hits theaters, bringing Marvel back to its famous May weekend for the first time since 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

While the new Doctor Strange 2 footage does its best to keep the film's biggest reveals shrouded in secrecy, it gives fans plenty of juicy frames to hyper-analyze. Without further ado, here are 12 Easter eggs, hidden meanings, and plot details within the latest Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer.

Nightmare Dimension

Doctor Strange 2 nightmare

Marvel

The trailer opens with Strange approaching a bleak Sanctum Sanctorum, surrounded by skeletal remains. Narration alludes to this being a dream, but the set design indicates this location could be a real place within the multi-dimensional MCU.

This appears to be the Nightmare Dimension, which is a reality that is fueled purely by fear. In the comics, the Nightmare Dimension is appropriately ruled over by Nightmare, a famed foe of Doctor Strange's that specializes in the spooky.

While Nightmare showing face in Multiverse of Madness is far from confirmed, he is a card that Marvel creatives have had their eye on for a long time. 2016's Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson often professed his desire to include Nightmare in a future Strange project. Derrickson departed Doctor Strange 2 due to "creative differences," but that doesn't mean all of his concepts for the sequel were scrapped.

No Way Home Backlash

Doctor Strange 2 Spider-Man spell

Marvel

It's going to be a long Phase 4 for the good doctor.

Shortly into the trailer, Strange admits that he "did what [he] had to do to protect our world." This comes on the heels of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw Doctor Strange cast a spell to erase Peter Parker from the world's memory in order to prevent Multiversal madness. Is this in reference to that Multiversal mistake, or something else?

Wong lectures Strange that he "opened a doorway between universes" that cannot be easily closed once unlocked. This, combined with WandaVision's Hex magic and Loki's inciting assassination, might just be the recipe for permanent disaster across the MCU's Multiverse.

NYC Skyline

Doctor Strange 2 NYC

Marvel

Marvel trailer manipulation might be back.

Roughly 30 seconds into the trailer, a sunset shot of New York City's cityscape glistens as Strange narrates about "[protecting] our world." While this particular skyline is the New York City the MCU is familiar with, it's worth keeping an eye on. Marvel has digitally removed characters from pivotal promotional material before in efforts to send fans on a wild goose chase. Considering the amount of noteworthy skyscrapers in Marvel mythos, it's not crazy to assume this skyline shot has been tampered with.

Everything from the Baxter Building to the remodeled Avengers Tower could end up being in this landscape come May 6. With Spider-Man icon Sam Raimi in the director's chair, Oscorp HQ is also on the table.

Rintrah

Doctor Strange 2 rintrah

Marvel

Fans get their best look yet at the jolly green Minotaur in this trailer.

This is Rintrah, an extradimensional beast that has regular encounters with Doctor Strange on the page. While the first teaser positioned Rintrah as an antagonist, this new footage contextualizes his status as a friend at Kamar-Taj.

Here, Rintrah stands battle ready alongside sorcerers in training as black smoke encroaches on the dojo.

Animated Dimension

Doctor Strange 2 animation

Marvel

What If. stock just skyrocketed.

In a frame that redefines the term blink-and-miss-it, Strange and Xochitil Gomez's America Chavez fall through space and time, literally. The two pass dinosaurs as they break through glass-like barriers. In one particular freeze frame, Strange can be seen drifting into an animated dimension, one that rewires his character into a cartoon.

Animated projects like What If. and X-Men '97 have been rumored to play into Doctor Strange 2 for a while, but always under the assumption that their cartoon characters would receive a live-action casting. This dimension indicates that Multiverse of Madness is venturing into the two-dimensional at some point, even if it's just within a brief montage.

Master Mordo

Doctor Strange 2 Master Mordo

Marvel

Chiwetel Ejiofor makes his first MCU appearance since 2016, but toy leaks indicate this is not the same Mordo fans were introduced to six years ago.

This Variant is Master Mordo, a version of the character speculated to be the Sorcerer Supreme of his world. Master Mordo plays judge, jury, and executioner in this trailer, as he sorrowfully explains Strange's Multiversal mistakes "will not go unpunished."

Mordo appears later in the trailer as well, clashing with a shackled Strange. That fight features Strange wearing handcuffs that are noticeably less bulky than the restraints he rocks earlier, indicating that Mordo reinforces them after their bout concludes.

Marvel's Illuminati

Professor X Doctor Strange 2

Marvel

He may be the one to bring Strange in, but Mordo is not the only judge and jury in this trailer.

Strange stands before a six-chaired throne room, all of which are shrouded in shadows. While Mordo and Patrick Stewart's Professor X make up two of these councilmen, the remaining four remain a mystery. That said, the vibe of this secret society is eerily reminiscent of Marvel's Illuminati.

On the page, the Illuminati are a classified collection of Marvel's elites. Unlike the Time Variance Authority, the Illuminati do not script timelines but rather adequately prepare for Avengers-level threats. The most famous roster of the faction includes Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Charles Xavier, Namor, Black Bolt, and Doctor Strange.

Doctor Strange 2's adaptation of the Illuminati is unlikely to be an exact copy of the comic line-up, but there's reason to believe that the group's founding father may be amongst the live-action ranks.

Ultron Sentries

Doctor Strange 2 Ultron

Marvel

Even seven years after Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony Stark's evil artificial intelligence continues to make an impact.

As first reported by The Direct, Ultron sentries make their live-action return in this footage, guiding a handcuffed Strange through the Illuminati's hallways. If Ultron bots are back, their maker can't be too far behind.

The design of these Ultron sentries appears to be the work of Superior Iron Man, a Tony Stark Variant that dials up the arrogance to the danger zone. An alternate version of Stark appearing in Multiverse of Madness has long been speculated, and some believe a glimpse of him can be seen later in this footage.

Captain Marvel? Iron Man?

Captain Marvel Doctor Strange

Marvel

Wanda Maximoff's battle with this glowing flight-based hero is Marvel's Yanny vs. Laurel debate.

Upon first glance, this appears to be a Maria Rambeau rendition of Captain Marvel, as the famous star-shaped emblem can be made out on the character's chest. That said, another frame seems to showcase a familiar goatee, hinting that this could be the aforementioned Superior Iron Man in action.

Considering Wanda is being positioned as an antagonist in this movie, it makes more sense for her to battle Captain Marvel, who is significantly more morally pure than Superior Iron Man. Surrounding statues also indicate this battle goes down at Illuminati HQ, despite Wanda rocking a casual Friday wardrobe. This could be a way of calling back to WandaVision, when Scarlet Witch arrived at SWORD's facilities in street clothes and broke into the lab that was tampering with Vision's remains.

Return to Westview

Doctor Strange 2 WandaVision Westview

Marvel

The now-infamous New Jersey town has not seen its last days in the MCU.

Towards the final moments of the trailer, Wanda confronts herself inside her former Westview home. The casual-clothed Wanda comforts a fully-uniformed Scarlet Witch, who just fell to her knees in a suburban living room.

Master Illusionist

Wanda Maximoff Illusion

Marvel

That Darkhold is no joke.

Wanda's lone line of dialogue comes as she lectures Strange about the fairness of "[breaking] the rules." Not only is Strange's expression chillingly fearful, but his attire is all too familiar.

Strange is wearing the same scarf and jacket as when he questions Wanda earlier in the trailer about her Multiverse knowledge. Not only that, but the blurry red background of this scene seemingly includes leaf-less trees. This hints that not only are these two moments happening in the same scene, but Wanda may be manipulating reality again.

White Blossoms

Doctor Strange statue

Marvel

Symbolism is going crazy in Doctor Strange 2.

When Strange first confronts Wanda, she is trimming branches from a field of white blossomed trees, speculated to be on Mount Wundagore. In literature, white blossoms are seen as a symbol of peace, while spiritually, white blossom trees are viewed as the opposite of chaos.

Surrounding Wanda with white blossom trees is director Sam Raimi's way of showcasing Wanda's inner peace. On the flip side, shedding those trees of their blossoms when Wanda transforms into the Scarlet Witch only emphasizes the mental havoc she's experiencing at that moment.

White blossomed trees can also be seen in Strange's vision of a universe where he's "the hero" and is immortalized with a statue in front of the Sanctum Sanctorum. Where there's smoke, there's fire, and where there's white blossoms, there's a major plotpoint.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6.

The first trailer for Marvel’s Multiverse of Madness showed Doctor Strange saving the universe from himself. But that’s not the only enemy the sorcerer will battle in director Sam Raimi’s horror film. His old mentor-turned-foe Baron Mordo is back. And the trailer also features Strange squaring off with a giant one-eyed tentacled monster. You don’t have to wait for the film to know what it’s like to face that massive creature though. You can fight it yourself right now, with a new Doctor Strange vs. Gargantos LEGO showdown set.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will bring Marvel Comics’ sea monster to the big screen. In the trailer it’s not terrorizing the oceans though. He’s haunting the streets of New York City. However, it doesn’t matter where you live, land or sea, you can now build him yourself. LEGO’s new 264-piece “play-and-display” set stands over 4.5-inches tall, 12-inches wide, and 10-inches deep. That’s a whole lot of Gargantos, whose jointed tentacles you can position as you like. So you can even have him waving hello if you’re looking for some multidimensional friendship instead of a showdown.

The LEGO set also comes with three minifigures and Doctor Strange has a removable cape. The current Sorcerer Supreme, Wong, is also along for the ride. (We swear that’s Wong. At least, that’s what LEGO says. Maybe that’s Wong from another dimension?) And MCU newcomer America Chavez is also here to fight this nightmare. Xochitl Gomez will play Chavez in the movie, and her inclusion in this set is no surprise. She’s expected to play a big role in the movie.

Despite the terrifying creature that gives the set its name, the collection is designed for ages eight and up. And whether you want it for yourself or your kids, you can buy it right now. It’s available at LEGO’s online shop for $29.99. At least that’s what you can buy in this universe. In some other dimensions this is a Baron Mordo Showdown set. That one is fun, but not nearly as cool as a giant monster. Though Wong at least looks like himself.

By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth! After months of feverish anticipation, Doctor Strange's first MCU sequel — subtitled in the Multiverse of Madness — has arrived on the big screen. "Madness" is the perfect word to describe the dimension-hopping hijinks of Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) in the follow-up directed by horror master/Spider-Man vet, Sam Raimi.

Like a grimoire of forbidden knowledge hidden deep within a remote cabin in the woods, the movie has the capacity to drive viewers insane with its mind-blowing implications for the wider mythos. The human brain can only withstand so much awesomeness in one go. There's plenty to unpack with the first official blockbuster of the season — from the promise of infinite universes to the film's plethora of big-name cameos. For the sake of brevity (and our own grip on reality), let's discuss the ending and what it potentially means for the sorcerer's adventures moving forward.

***WARNING! The following contains major plot spoilers for the new film!***

Fresh off his multiversal struggle against Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Stephen repairs the splintered watch gifted to him by Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) years before. The symbolism is plain for all to see: Strange has come to terms with the lonely status that comes with a life of practicing the Mystic Arts. The emotional cracks, aka the regrets of the past, have been mended and he's ready to step into a brand-new era.

He does just that, briefly leaving the Sanctum Sanctorum for a peaceful stroll among the streets of New York City. All seems hunky dory. until the sorcerer starts to clutch his head and falls to his knees. Clearly in unimaginable distress, he looks up to the sky and lets out an almighty scream as a third eye suddenly opens on his forehead. Despite his short use of the Darkhold and noble intentions, the hero has failed to avoid the irreparable corruption of dark magic. "The Darkhold exacts a heavy toll," his evil, three-eyed self warns earlier in the runtime. No kidding.

Now, you may be asking yourself: "does Strange ever gain a third eye (a concept often associated with enlightenment and higher planes of consciousness) in the comics?" Kind of.

Strange's newly-opened peeper — whose benefits and/or dangers have yet to be established — may very well be a nod to the Third Eye of Horus, a magical artifact that allows one to glimpse dimensions beyond the mortal plane of comprehension. Perhaps the good doctor has gained the ability of magical sight and no longer needs to cast revealer spells like the one he used on Gargantos near the start of the film.

Strange doesn't get to enjoy his down time for very long when, in the film's mid-credits sequence, he's approached by a strange woman — played by Charlize Theron! — who requests his help in rectifying a multiversal Incursion that he caused. After all, the "greatest danger to the multiverse . is Doctor Strange," at least according to Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (John Krasinski) of the now-dead Illuminati on Earth-838.

Reed also explains that Incursions are very bad news, indeed. Caused by individuals venturing out of their allotted realities for extended periods of time (either through Dream-walking or other methods), the term refers to a nightmare scenario in which the barrier between universes dissipates, causing them to smash into each other until one or both are completely destroyed.

The newcomer slices a hole in space-time and asks Stephen if he's afraid to join her. The cocky sorcerer scoffs ("Not in the least"), gets into costume, and opens his third eye, ready for a new adventure beyond the confines of the mortal realm.

While the name of Theron's character is never specified by the dialogue, her identity is revealed in the end credits as. Clea! Setting off any alarm bells yet, True Believers? Introduced in the comics a year after Strange himself, Clea is a powerful sorceress created by the inimitable duo of writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. The niece of the dreaded Dormmamu, she came to Earth where she studied under Doctor Strange, eventually marrying him. Anyone else notice how her fissure in Multiverse of Madness looked like it led straight into the Dark Dimension?

Hold on just a second there. Does Clea actually need to prevent an Incursion or is she just helping her uncle exact revenge on the only human who was able to outsmart of a near-omnipotent being? In any case, the MCU has found the perfect foil for the Master of the Mystic Arts.

A life with Christine was never going to work out (not just on Earth-616, but in any universe), and that's probably for the best. Their paths in life were too incongruous. Clea, however, is a fellow spell-casting veteran — someone who can actually understand what it's like to fight giant monsters and protect reality from collapsing in on itself. The only question is will they team up in a third Doctor Strange flick or the House of Harkness series coming to Disney+? The second option seems like a good bet, especially since Wanda's death is sure to leave behind a major power power vacuum in the world of witchcraft.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters everywhere.

Other upcoming horror films include Firestarter in theaters and streaming on Peacock on May 13, The Black Phone in theaters on June 24 and Jordan Peele's NOPE in theaters July 22.
