This guide aims to help with the error “Failed to create d3d device”.

Disclaimer

I am no special tech guy. This is simply a guide I have made after trying to solve the d3d error on my own computer. Therefore I can’t be held responsible if you can’t get it to work, I am simply writing a summary of all the fixes I tried to hopefully make it a easier time for you.

I made this guide for Lego Star Wars and Harry Potter, but hopefully any of these suggestions can help you if you’re trying to get another game to work. The common problem with Lego Harry Potter and Lego Star Wars is that the game can’t start because your screen can’t display 60Hz, but displays higher than this value.

What is D3D?

D3D or Direct3D is the hardware accelerated graphics rendering API used in games that uses 3D graphics.

Change display

There is an issue with this game requiring 60Hz and a lot of modern laptops can’t display this. To change the display of your screen:
Open system settings>Display>Advanced Display Settings>Display Adapter Properties for Display>Monitor>Select 60hz>Apply

If this doesn’t work, you can alternatively plug your pc into another screen that can display 60Hz and a game should run fine.

Some users has also had succes in the nvidia control panel for the game and changing the display options.

Updating drivers

The error is a common problem if your drivers are out of dates. Simply update your video drivers. Make sure your computers OS is up to date and your hardware is up to date.

If any of the other fixes in this guide didn’t work, you might have to reinstall your drivers.

Simple solution

1. Make sure the game is running on your dedicated graphic card, some users have reported the game tried to run on the integrated graphic card or similar.
2. Verify the local cache, then restart your pc.
3. Run the game as administrator
4. Run compatibility check on legoharrypotter.exe file (not working try running the game in compatibility for another windows OS.

5. If this didn’t work delete the game, restart your pc and reinstall the game.

Messing with the files

Some users had succes changing values in the files and in that way getting the game to start.

1. head to the PC configs for the game – this is done my finding the %appdata% folder –> Roaming –> WB games –> lego Harry Potter
Or use this path if you are having issues:
C:Users$AppDataRoamingWarner Bros. Interactive Entertainment – (its your username)

Inside the Harry Potter folder you will find a text file named “pcconfig” open this. Here you’re gonna change some values:
Set the values
ScreenWidth 1920
ScreenHeight 1080
WindowWidth 1920
WindowHeight 1080
to this and also change the screen refresh rate in the folder to 60 and the vsync to 1.

Launch options

Right click on the game in your library. Click properties then set launch option:
Write -autoconfig
If this didn’t work try writing “dxlevel 81” or “dxlevel90”. Otherwise try forcing the game to start in windowed by writing “–windowed” or launching it in 1920x1080p with “-screen-width 1920 -screen-height 1080”

Game can’t launch due to speakers

Some users have reported the game cant launch because of some setting related with sound. For this fix I am gonna link to this Harry Potter guide:

I myself couldn’t get this to work, however there is a workaround. Linking your PC up to a different PC screen or television might do the trick. I haven’t been able to solve the problem, but when I wired my laptop up with my TV using a HDMI, the game ran perfectly – this might be related to the sound fix or the display fix, I don’t know. But its a workaround that worked on my computer when none of these other suggestions worked.

None of the solutions worked?

The program can force open the game and create the D3D window. You can play the game normally, but there will be a few graphically errors (I only saw one) and you won’t be able to change the video game settings without the game crashing.

The issue with this game is that you need a 60hz refresh rate via Windows 10. I had the same issue. Simply open system settings>Display>Advanced Display Settings>Display Adapter Properties for Display>Monitor>Select 60hz>Apply. Worked for me :)

Things to try:
Verify game files
Restart Steam
Run from the 'exe' file as Administrator
Run in compatibilty mode from Properties in the 'exe' file
In Win10 run the troubleshooter in the compatibility option

Try reinstalling the entire game? If that doesn't work, I fixed the same issue for a different game by downloading DxWnd and changing settings pretty much at random (because I don't know what any of them mean) until it worked.

Also, it's definitely a DirectX related issue. It might be fixed by downloading the latest graphics drivers for your GPU, or the latest DirectX version. Or if you already have the latest, you may need to downgrade to an older version.

I tried this, but on my options on monitor, 6ohz isn't an option. only 144hz (which is what my monitor is).

You may be able to force 60Hz through your graphics drivers, but you likely just won't be able to play the game using that monitor.

Is there a way you can do that on a 144hz laptop? As for forcing 60Hz with graphics drivers, it will vary depending on what laptop model you're using, I suggest checking with the manufacturer's support team or posting on their forums.

If your laptop has video output, you could try plugging in a secondary monitor (which is capable of 60Hz) and playing the game on that screen instead.

As I have suggested to others CRU (Custom refresh utility) can help to add a lower refresh rate to your settings and then you can increase video settings up once started . You never see it at 144 but at least you can play.

This guide will hopefully help you solve an annoying d3d device error on older Lego games!

Chances are, you’re on a modern gaming laptop- and just wanna enjoy some older Lego games. But, upon opening, you run into this:

In Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, Lego Batman, and I can assume others from the early Lego game days, won’t work if your monitor refresh rate is not 60hz. A lot of laptops now have 144hz refresh rates. Great for some things, not so great for older Lego games.

Connect to a monitor with a 60hz refresh rate. Most connect via HDMI, so shouldn’t be a problem for most laptops. If you don’t have an HDMI port, there are USB-to-HDMI adapters available.

I found out this worked by using my monitor drawing tablet, which has a 60hz refresh rate. Problem solved!

If you don’t have, or don’t want to connect an external monitor, there are a few options.

First, right-click your desktop and go to Display Settings, then Advanced Display settings. Check and see if your box for refresh rate has other options, and if so, select 60hz. (Other rates below 144hz might work, but 60 definitely works so it’s just as well to use that.)

If that’s not an option, then you’ll need to use some software.

Use caution and remember to ask the computer owner before using this tool!

I’ve not experienced any issues with it thus far, and I believe it’s fairly simple and not likely to ruin your machine. However, it does modify registry entries. So again, use some discretion.

if steam doesn’t remove it

Be sure to read the description and tutorials on the site as well!

After you extract the contents, run the CRU exe as an administrator.

Then, under Standard Resolutions, select “add”

and select your resolution. It must be 60hz!.

Now, in the same folder as CRU.exe, run “restart.exe”. This’ll restart the graphics driver, so the screen will briefly black out.

After that’s done, go to Windows” Advanced Display settings and, if all went right, you’ll now see 60hz as an option. Select it.

You should be able to enjoy those older Lego games now!
