In the Star Wars universe, the bad guys often have the coolest toys. In A New Hope, it was Star Destroyers and the Death Star, and with the release of The Empire Strikes Back it was the AT-AT. But one of the first new characters appears in the movie as the Empire searches the galaxy for signs of the Rebel scum that destroyed the Death Star. I am, of course, talking about the Viper Probe droid, launched from the Imperial fleet and scattered across the stars in their pods. From the moment we first saw the technological terror rising out of the snowbank, turning its multi-eyed head and unfolding its arms like some kind of evil jellyfish, it was clear that the Empire would stop at nothing to find the rebels. Joining the collectible helmets in the new 18+ line of LEGO sets, the Imperial Probe Droid is finally available at a scale that does the source material justice. 75306 Imperial Probe Droid includes 683 pieces and will retail for US $59.99 | CAN $79.99 | UK £59.99. It is available for pre-order now, and will be available starting April 26.

The box and contents
The box uses the same black vertical format as the Star Wars Helmets Collection with the 18+ branding, featuring the finished model on the front with a subtle red glow. The back of the box shows the model from a different angle and includes a small diagram to show the dimensions and a small row of three images from the movie.
The box comes with 6 numbered bags, most containing additional bags for smaller parts, an instruction booklet, a sticker sheet, and 2 small bags filled with an assortment of small parts which are mostly used in the construction of the arms, with a few turning up as eyes.
Just like the 2 waves of helmets, the booklet starts with an introductory spread from LEGO Star Wars Creative Director Jens Kronvold Frederiksen about the probe droid, including a full-page photograph of the droid in action from the movie.
Here are just a few of the interesting parts in this set, including several of the small parts from the pre-pack bag that was introduced with the Batman theme last year. Each of these is appearing in this color for the first time. I think that mech-builders and LEGO fans who enjoy creating seemingly impossible connections will love many of these as they use a bunch of unusual angles, and have a variety of studs and clip pipes. There is one part that stands out as essential in this set, and that’s the small 1×1 rounded cone that is used in many of the arm joints.
The sticker sheet is dominated by the large UCS-sized info card that goes on the stand.
The build
The build starts out with a basic snowy landscape which hides an opening for the end of the stand built from transparent found bricks with an axle down the center. The info card attaches to the base, with a bit of snow along the edges, which is a fun detail.
The base of the droid uses a common technique of plates attached to hinges on all 4 spokes, but there is a neat trick to ensure that the angled segments line up consistently around the model by using gold handles to keep them at the perfect angle.
The head is a hodge-podge of radar dishes, cones, and rounded boat tiles for eyes and sensors, and a lot of the 1×1 round plates with handles, which allows the many smaller eyes to be arranged at different angles.
The two antennas used to transmit the recorded scans of the rebel power generator are topped with 2 of the candle piece in black, which also appear later on some of the smaller arms.
Speaking of arms, the droid also has 6 spindly appendages. Three larger ones tipped with various clamps, blades, and other nefarious tools. The three smaller arms which sprout from the central portion of the droids underside all end in clamps of differing designs. The arms, which feature several of the short rounded trapezoid cones, are very movie-accurate, and frankly would not look nearly as good without them, being the perfect shape for the knobbly joints.
The finished model
With the finished droid perched on its stand, the head can move freely, and some of the arms can be posed, while others are more restricted by the use of certain fixed parts. The droid can be turned to face any one of four directions since the base of the stand is square. If I had any complaint about the set, it would be that the stand is just a bit too short to unfold the arms fully, but the trade-off in stability is acceptable since you would not want a wobbly stand to tip over and cause your probe droid to self-destruct.
Conclusion and recommendations
As the first non-helmet in the small-box 18+ Star Wars collection, this droid stands out, and would be a perfect addition to any fan’s collection. The Imperial Probe Droid is a complicated blend of organic and angular shapes with so many different sizes of eyes and sensors, and the LEGO designers have done a fantastic job. Fans of the probe droid have had many versions from official sets at minifig scale that left so much to be desired, and it is great to finally get a version worthy of display, and for a reasonable price.

Challenging, authentic, and so beautifully constructed, the Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid is an essential if you’re a collector. While it isn’t a toy for kids, it’ll look great in any Lego display case, and it’s really satisfying to create.

Let’s be clear right from the start: the Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid is not a toy for kids. It comes with a suggested age of 18+ because of its complexity, and if you let a child play with it, you’ll quickly find yourself reattaching appendages and straightening arms. And maybe searching for the head, too. This is for collectors who love to see cool Lego sets on display, and that’s reflected in everything from the box and the aesthetic of the model to the way you build it.

Another thing to clarify right now is that the Lego Imperial Probe Droid is very, very cool. While not exactly an icon of the Star Wars universe, it’s well known to fans of the original trilogy, and it translates to the Lego format surprisingly well. It’s an enjoyable challenge to put together and, while not a child’s toy, you can create some of the model’s six sections with a younger builder. As ever, we constructed the Probe Droid with our handy five-year-old assistant to see how suitable this is for younger children as well as adults. Yes, it says 18+ on the box, but we like to apply the same testing process to all our kits.
Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid review: Build
The Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid (model number 75306) comes in six stages and has a small sheet of stickers to apply. You start by building the snowy base, with the little plaque, then the body, the mount, the legs and arms, and finally the head. It all starts off pretty easy, as the base and the body are fairly substantial slabs of Lego. When this reviewer was building this with his son, the boy was able to construct most of these first few items himself (with a little direction).
Once you get into bags four to six, things get way more complicated, as you’re building the arms and legs, and finally the head. These are small, intricate items, and they’re easily broken or detached. They hang down from the body of the Probe Droid, and you can turn them slightly once attached. While they look brilliant, you cannot play with them too much, as they easily separate from the body. While we criticized the Lego X-Wing (opens in new tab) for being flimsy, here it’s less of an issue, as this is clearly aimed at collectors and not kids, so you should really expect to interact with it too much; it’s more for just poseability.
Each appendage feels distinct, and there are very few repeated processes, which is unusual for a Lego build of this scale. They all slot logically onto the body, and it’s pleasing to see your progress as each bag adds a brand new element to the droid. Finally, the head is pleasingly complex but looks fantastic once finished, and when you slot it onto the body of the droid to finish the build you get a genuine sense of satisfaction and achievement. While this kit is only 683 pieces, which pales in comparison to larger kits like the Star Destroyer, it’s a hugely interesting model to create, and there are no dull phases of the build.
In total it took us about three hours to finish the Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid, although you could probably build it a little faster if you’re on your own. But that isn’t really the point of Lego, is it.
Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid review: Design
In terms of how this Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid compares to the in-movie version, we’d say it’s a great success. It manages to achieve excellent detail with many common Lego pieces, and while a complex figure, it never looks too blocky or artificial. It’s incredibly elegantly designed, and a fantastic piece of Lego to just look at and admire the detail.
The 100-page instruction booklet is clear and easy to follow (we really like how the ‘new pieces’ in every step are now highlighted in red), and the way you build it is logical and never too rushed. There are a few occasional design choices we thought were unusual, around the legs and arms, but it all ties together well in the end.
The Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid sits neatly on its plinth of Lego ice, and really looks like it belongs on the icy wastelands of Hoth. A real Lego success story.
Should you buy the Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid?
We really enjoyed building the Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid. While it isn’t much of a toy, and you won’t be able to share much of the experience with kids, the build itself is varied, challenging, and immensely satisfying. What’s more, at $60, we really feel like this one is good value for money. You get plenty of build time, and a delightfully authentic model at the end to admire. We can’t help but tip our collective hats to the way this was designed.
Anyone looking for a simple, child-friendly Lego model should look elsewhere. Not only is this a tricky construction, with loads of small pieces, but it’s also something that simply won’t withstand being played with. The legs and appendages are delicate and easy to pull off, although the rest is reasonably sturdy. And while this isn’t the hottest collectable in the Star Wars Lego stable, it’s something that fans of the original trilogy will really appreciate.
What other Lego Star Wars can you buy?
The Lego Imperial Probe Droid is very much a display piece, so if you’re looking for more of the same, you can check out some of the existing helmet models. The Darth Vader helmet is pretty cool, if a little lacking in color variety, and it’s roughly the same cost too at $69 suggested retail price (opens in new tab) . There are other helmets available too, but this one is by far the best known, so would be perfect for collectors.
If you’d rather get another display model, we’d probably go for The Child (from the Mandalorian) in Lego. It’s a cool kit, and one of the hottest sets of 2021, but is more aimed at collectors than younger builders who want to play with their Lego. You’ll pick it up for about $79 at retail (opens in new tab) , and it comes with 1073 pieces, so it’ll take you a while to finish.

The set is estimated to retire sometime within mid to late 2022. В качестве декорации выбрали заснеженные равнины. Тут рядом стоит и табличка с информацией, припорошенная снегом. Холм выполнен просто и со вкусом. Но вот тут начинаются первые проблемы. Подставка для дроида представляет из себя башню из круглых прозрачных блоков с осью внутри. Внизу серый квадратный блок, который в основании декорации ни к чему не крепится. Если вы случайно задените всю конструкцию, то дроид упадёт и разлетится вдребезги.
Конечно, клешней у него много, но некоторые из них похожи. Начнём с первых двух - дрель и " рука " с двумя пальцами. Дрель имеет три точки артикуляции и сам наконечник вращается на 180°. Клешня подвижна в 4 точках. И вот теперь жирный минус - все эти " руки " держатся на одном честном слове и отваливаются от случайного прикосновения пальцем. В связи с этим во время фотосъёмки возникла куча проблем.
Далее идёт две отднотипных клешни, первая из которых крутится вокруг своей оси на конце, и в основании поднимается на 90°, а вторая раскачивается уже на 180°.
Самая большая клешня с интересной конструкцией - она может вытягиваться засчёт небольшого поршня и вращается в основании на 180°. Также во время изменения длины крутятся две маленькие шестерёнки.
И наконец самая маленькая клешня, которая в основании вращается на 180°. Ну и самая непрочная. Хотя, тут она соревнуется со всеми остальными.
Верхушка дроида - " голова " со всеми микросхемами и чипами. Она вращается на все 360° и в точности скопирована с оригинального дроида. Сверху располагаются две антенны, по бокам множество камер, пушек, датчиков и прочего. Это самая удачная и его часть.
В комплекте шли сменные части для клешни. И не могу не упомянуть коробку - она прекрасна. На задней стороне изображён дроид на заснеженной планете Хот.
По итогу могу сказать, что модель красивая, но очень и очень хрупкая. Лучше поставить её куда нибудь рядом с другими бюстами по Звёздным войнам и не трогать. Я ещё раз поздравляю всех с прошедшим новом годом и прощаюсь на неопределенный срок. Хотя, возможно скоро выпущу фотосет. Напоследок ловите фото, сделанные вчера.
