На первый взгляд кажется, что данный набор призван поддержать коллекционеров-любителей монохромных минифигурок Лего, однако это именно то, о чём Вы подумали. Неужели Lego уже не торт? Или этот набор напрашивался? Знакомимся с плюсами и минусами взрывного набора датского конструктора, который создал огромную волну общественного резонанса во многих странах Мира. Для кого-то это прорыв, для кого-то это разочарование, а кто-то просто в гневе. Что же это за радуга такая?

Начнём с изучения коробки. Итак, перед нами эксклюзивный коллекционный набор, с пометкой 18+. Это очень хорошо, на мой взгляд, и я объясню почему. Я ничего не имею против представителей меньшинств, но являюсь категорическим противником истерии и давления на детей. Здесь, как мы видим давления на детей нет, так как есть чётко выделенные ограничения.

Что касается самого дизайна коробки, то тут всё на высочайшем коллекционном уровне – красивые изображения на всех сторонах коробки, и полное понимание того, что это за набор. Еще обращает на себя внимание артикул набора, который начинается с 40ххх – чаще всего такие номера присваивают подарочным наборам, но насколько я знаю этот будет продаваться.

Перед Вами флаг «Progress Pride», появившийся в 2018 году трудами художника Даниэля Квазара. Данный флаг является символом сообщества LGBTQIA+ (лесбиянки, геи, бисексуалы, трансгендеры, странные люди, интерсексуалы, бесполые и другие гендерные идентичности). Все цвета флага полностью совпадают цветам фигурок и деталей набора. Таким образом не остаётся никаких сомнений в информационном посыле этого набора.

Что касается меня, то я в полном восторге от набора! К меньшинствам я отношусь нейтрально – людей я уважаю всех одинаково, а их предпочтения в личной жизни меня не касаются. А вот сам набор – это просто нечто! Не секрет, что монохромные фигурки давно привлекают коллекционеров. Многие даже стирали растворителем принты с лица и торса, чтобы получить «чистый» цвет, и вытворяли с фигурками чудеса дизайна, и получалось просто волшебно! (просто пролистните галерею вправо и увидите один из примеров прекрасной работы с одним цветом).

Целых 11 фигурок с редчайшими элементами – что может быть лучше? А у синего человечка абсолютно уникальный (на данный момент) молд причёски. Такой не было до сих пор ни в каком цвете. Просто вау!

Seeing someone like ourselves represented through our favorite building toy truly matters, but until the announcement of 40516 Everyone is Awesome today, LEGO hasn’t released a LEGO set that fully embraces and celebrates the company’s myriad LGBTQ+ fans and employees, including people of color. Featuring 11 colorful minifigures with a rainbow backdrop built from 346 pieces, the set will be available on the first day of Pride Month 2021, June 1, for US $34.99 | CAN $44.49 | UK £30.

The LEGO Group provided The Brothers Brick with an early copy of this set for review. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews.

The packaging & instructions

40516 Everyone is Awesome follows the black 18+ branding of recent sets the company intends to sell to adults, with the front and back simply showing the assembled set from several different angles. Since this is a display piece and not a vehicle or playset, there really aren’t working functions or play features to showcase on the box.

The parts come in six unnumbered bags, plus several larger white plates loose in the box.

Wrappers for the instruction booklet are generally limited to larger sets, especially ones that include a sticker sheet. However, despite this being a set under 350 pieces with a brief instruction booklet, the booklet comes in its own wrapper.

LEGO has long recognized and celebrated its own LGBTQ+ employees, and LEGO’s head of product design Matthew Ashton designed this set himself. Earlier in his LEGO career, Matt designed beloved sets like the rare 2008 Castle Advent Calendar (7979), which he kindly signed for me at BrickCon in Seattle later that year.

Since the minifig parts are mixed throughout the unnumbered bags, the instructions simply have you build them all at once, with a single example, similar to the generalized instructions for Collectible Minifigures. (It’s also notable that a set under $50 includes a brick separator, and in the new color.)

The parts & build experience

Opening all the bags and pouring out the colorful parts feels a bit like the beginning of the build experience for the wonderful 41597 Go Brick Me.

Mixed in with all those rainbow pieces and minifig parts are a number of pieces that appear in new colors, including several arch pieces and (surprisingly) iconic pieces like 2×3 bricks in bright green, purple, and dark pink. (Matt Ashton has been teasing this set on his Instagram with a new brick every day for the last couple of weeks.)

Rather than relying on primary colors, the rainbow is built from a number of unexpected colors. Here’s the full list (using the BrickLink names in general use among LEGO hobbyists, rather than LEGO’s own, more-obscure names):

The base of the rainbow display stand is built from the large white plates that came loose in the box, which are stacked to provide structural integrity.

The rainbow itself is built from colorful 1×2 bricks sandwiching a tan core.

2×3 bricks alternate rows that have the tan core, creating a sturdy vertical surface, with the front of the display stand covered in tiles (with a few 1×2 studded spots to place the minifigs later).

The rounded top of the rainbow includes curved bricks that match the color of each end capped by curved arches. These hidden curved bricks provide further reinforcement of the tall backdrop section.

The finished model & minifigures

Adding the monochrome minifigs to the rainbow display stand completes the build. For allies interested in the set but potentially unfamiliar with the symbolism, the inclusion of black and brown on one end represents support of people of color within the LGBTQ+ community (similar to the recent Philadelphia Pride flag), while the light blue, white, and dark pink on the other end symbolize support for trans rights. The six colors of the traditional Pride flag are represented in between.

The backdrop itself is beautiful, and I can see LEGO builders customizing it as a display stand to share their own stories.

The eleven minifigs that line up with the stripes are all entirely monochrome, with hair pieces, blank heads, torsos, and legs all in the same color. Every hair piece is unique, with no repetition between colors, and many of the hair pieces appear in their respective colors for the first time. From a pure parts perspective, some of the hair colors feel less “useful” for custom creations than others, but I’ve probably seen nine or ten of these on the bus in Seattle.

The blue minifigure includes the set’s only completely new element, a Johnny Bravo-style hairdo.

Conclusions & recommendation

Whether you see this LEGO set as a celebration and reflection of yourself or just a colorful parts pack, there’s something for everyone in 40516 Everyone is Awesome. Assembling and displaying single-color minifigures is a fun part of the LEGO hobby for many builders, and this is a fantastic way to get a jump start on your monochrome fig collection. It also makes a great display piece at home or work.

I’m really excited. Like many of you, I’m a sucker for the monochrome rainbow figs. I’ve always wanted a bunch of them to display together. From the standpoint of someone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community, I appreciate the gesture very much. As one of the largest, most popular companies in the world, both in and out of the toy biz, it has a lot of social pull. A well-executed set like this makes an important statement to the world. It is both bold and classy.

Richard and I were very fortunate to be able to represent our community on LEGO Masters and bring some visibility to LGBTQ+ LEGO fans. When the Adult Engagement Team asked me if I would like to review the new set 40516, it was described merely as ‘Merchandise.’ No description was available beyond that. Sometimes that can be a little vague. I was expecting to receive a storage box, a branded bag or an ill-fitting T-shirt ( mainly because nobody asked me my size.)

And then it arrived, and I opened the box. This set was something totally unexpected: bands of bright colour, with minifigures in single shades. The build looked elegant and straightforward enough. But I found myself thinking: Could this be one of the most significant sets of recent years?

Let me explain.
As you have no doubt seen, the set features 11 bold, colourful stripes on a platform. 11 minifigures stand on the platform, each matching a coloured stripe. Elements of a single colour make up each figure.

A message is sent out with the set, written on the first page of the instructions. It comes from Matthew Ashton, Vice President of Design for the LEGO Group, and designer of this set:

“I wanted to create a model that is a symbol of inclusivity, that celebrates everyone, no matter how they identify or who they love. Everyone is unique, and with a little more love, acceptance and understanding in this world, we can all feel free to be our true AWESOME selves! This model is to show that we care, and that we truly believe ‘Everyone is Awesome’! We hope you’ll build this model and display it with pride. It’s a celebration of love, a celebration of you!”

I read it. I paused. I read it again. I have been trying to work out how best to respond. As a white, straight male, I feel almost unqualified to do so.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the changes in how many female characters have been depicted in Harry Potter sets over the last 20 years (Spoiler: there is a higher proportion of female minifigures produced now than there were back in the earlier run). The response to this article was quite mixed in some forums where I shared it. Some were saying ‘Great to hear’ – ‘good news’ others…’Really, LEGO has come to this?’ ‘What sort of madness has the world come to where we have to be politically correct about a toy?’ Other comments might have been a little more robust.

Perhaps when the toy comes from a company that is amongst the highest-profile on the planet, and part of its stock in trade is tiny avatars that you might use to represent members of a global community, then the representation of all people matter.
There is no doubt that inclusivity and diversity have become corporate watchwords over the last few years: I can hear the eyeballs rolling as the annual requests to complete the requisite online training modules are sent out.
But it is important.
Large portions of our society still feel excluded, isolated and neglected. Misunderstood, feared and hated. Sometimes, this is because of cultural upbringing, religious beliefs, or being told something without a factual basis.
I’ve been fortunate in my life, privileged even. I don’t really know what it is like to be excluded based on things I cannot control: race, gender or sexuality. But I know people that have been, and I find it difficult to understand the full extent of the challenges they face.

To look at how this inclusivity is celebrated, lets look a little closer at the set itself:

The Contents

Let’s look at the set: the set comes with six unnumbered bags, each containing various elements in different colours. There are also a few plates floating loosely in the box. Interestingly, I could not find the factory code on the seals to the set.

There are 13 colours represented in the set. However, there are only 11 coloured bands on display: Some tan elements are hidden from view, and a teal brick separator is included in the box but not in the build.
We have elements in black, reddish-brown, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, medium lilac, light royal blue, white and bright purple.

The elements present in every colour include 2×3 bricks, 1×2 bricks, 1×2 plate, 1×2 tile and 2×2 tiles, as well as the minifigure elements. Some of these elements have been relatively rare in the past and should now be considered to be well and truly part of the colour palette.

New Colours include the 1x3x2 arch in bright green, light royal blue and bright purple. Reddish brown was seen in two sets over the past year but had not been seen before then; 2×3 bricks in bright green and light royal blue. These bricks have previously appeared in medium lilac and bright purple on one occasion each. The 1×2 tile has also made its first appearance in bright green and pale light blue.

New and rare elements

The Build

Construction of this set is fairly simple- setting up our plates, and then building up the backdrop, with alternating layers of 2×3 bricks and 1×2 bricks, with a reinforcing layer of 1×10 tan bricks.

Then we complete the top of the background with 2x3x1arch bricks, tidied with a tile on top. And we add the minifigures.

The Minifigures

With regard to the minifigures, most of the legs have existed in these colours previously, although yellow had been on hiatus from the mid 90s until we saw Benny’s Space Squad in late 2018.

It is uncommon for ‘mono torsos’ to be produced, rather requiring a little mix ‘n match between different figures.

All of the hair elements are preexisiting molds, but most of the colours are new except for white and black.

Origins of Hair:

Were you wondering where you might have first seen these hair pieces before? Most of theme got their start in the Collectible Minifigure range, although a reddish brown, yellow, green and bright purple made their debut out sude the range.

In Conclusion

This set is a striking display piece, a great source of monochromatic figures, including some hard to get colours, and comes with a message of love, respect and acceptance. The range of hairpieces is fantastic, including

If you have an interest in monochrome minfigures, this set represents terrific value: with the elements gathered together, it becomes a great starter pack.

Some of the other elements, as previously discussed, are new, and the palettes for working with light royal blue and bright green have improved significantly with this set.

Speaking in the designer video, Matthew Ashton says that the colour choices come from the traditional Pride flag, as well as the Blue white and pink from the transgender flag, as well as black and brown,representing people of colour.

I love the way that this set works as a display piece, as well as a reminder that not all people experience the level of respect and accepance that they should be entitled to as human beings. That the company is sending this message to its wider community is awesome.

While this set has been targeted initially as a message for the LGBTQ+ LEGO fans, the message include the excluded should be something we strive for with all people. If society is to progress, we need to be able to engage with people who are different to ourselves, treat them with respect, and listen to what they are trying to tell us.

In some ways, this set balances inclusivity and deniability to not potentially offend too much. You can “display it with pride” and the press release says it is for Pride, but nowhere on the set itself does it actually say it is for LGBTQIA+ Pride—yet it is being released in June, the month commonly known as Pride month, and is a bright, bold rainbow of support. But that is a well-known dance, coding messages of support in a way that “if you know, you know.” Like the “grooms wearing white” or the lineup of rainbow of spacemen in LEGO’s recent holiday ad, LEGO has found a way of supporting a traditionally underrepresented community while not upsetting those who might disagree too much. The “Everyone is Awesome” set is both a love letter to the LGBTQIA+ community and a nod to the monochrome minifigures fandom. It is the best of both worlds, and the message of support is there loud and clear if you need to see it.

This set reminds us that regardless of who we are, how we identify or where we come from, we are all part of humanity and should be treated with kindness and respect. It also tells us that it is important to the LEGO Group. They value both their fans and employees, regardless of where they are, in their personal journey. For this to be done in such an outward way by the company is, I think, a Big Deal.

Какие же лицемеры.

Интересно, где та грань, на которой по-хорошему должно заканчиваться принятие и празднование самого факта твоего существования, и начинаться какая-то азартная конкуренция. И должна ли такая грань вообще существовать. Ну то есть, если бы в моем детстве были все эти флажки и лозунги — мне как минимум было бы чуть спокойнее от мысли, что где-то есть такие же, как я, и что мы не бракованные. Но с другой стороны, без этого ощущения неполноценности я бы не стала тем, кто я есть сейчас, в плане всяких хороших и полезных навыков и черт, потому что не было бы нужды доказывать кому-то там и в том числе самой себе, что я чего-то стою несмотря на то, что девочка из меня так себе. Определённые заморочки, конечно, остались, и, наверное, никуда не уйдут ещё долго, но это уже не так важно, потому что дисфория в целом сошла на нет, её задавили ачивки и любовь окружающих. Я ни в коем случае не сужу всех по себе и не напяливаю белое пальто. Просто самой кажется иногда, что всё, что во мне есть хорошего, зародилось и развилось изначально как защитный механизм, и что клала бы я на это все, не будь у меня проблем с самоопределением и социализацией. И из-за этого интересно, сколько среди нынешних подростков таких, как я десять лет назад — но которые так и останутся комфортно никем, потому что им говорят, что любят их просто так. А вообще, ИМХО, вся эта движуха немного путает любовь с базовым уважением. «Ты прекрасен такой, какой есть» тебе должны говорить только мама с папой, а все остальные дефолтно не должны тебя чморить с порога — а больше ничего тебе не должны, дальше уже надо заслужить.

Абсолютно верно, но есть пару оговорок. Я не утверждаю, что всё что написано ниже будет абсолютно верно в каждом случае, но такое имеет место быть.
На моих глазах Вы пересекли черту «старшего поколения», когда люди, прошедшие кризис приуменьшают его значение.
«Бабы раньше в поле рожали и ничего».
«Меня родители били и ничего я вырос нормальным».
«Прошел армию/тюрьму/семинарию — получил хорошую школу жизни».
«Бросила тебя баба/мужик — другую/другого найдешь».
и моё любимое и универсальное
«Разве это проблема?!»

А теперь вопрос, сколько человек не получили любви, понимания и внимания и были раздавлены дисфорией и как следствие алкоголем и наркотиками?
Их голоса мы никогда не услышим или не захотим слышать.
Вопрос на самом деле на много шире, чем сложности ЛГБТК+. В нашем (постсоветском) обществе принято замалчивать любые — даже самые важные проблемы: домашнее насилие, родительство, дискриминация женщин, социальное неравенство и пр.
Признавая проблему хотя бы в одном, даже таком далёком от нас аспекте, мы приближаемся к осознанию и решению действительно сложных и важных для нас вещей.

Нет никакой любви, компании делают деньги. Если настанет время, когда любые не гетеро отношения будут порицаться, эти компании, ещё вчера бьющие себя в грудь за справедливость и равенство, переобуются настолько быстро, что никто и моргнуть не успеет

Да понятно, что компании никого не любят, но кто-то же в эти лозунги верит

Им просто это выгодно вот и все!

Ща волна сжв-говна поднимется, и обязательно обидится, что либо что их забыли, либо зря добавили белых, потому что им нельзя говорить что они awesome и проч.
Но набор неплох, да

Занятно, что российский сайт лего выдает 404 при попытке перехода на страницу этого набора.
