Lego WW1 - The Battle Of Verdun - stop motion
The Battle of Verdun was the longest and one of the bloodiest battles of World War 1. It was fought between the Germans and the French around the city of Verdun, in eastern France. The city of Verdun was both strategically and culturally significant to the French. The German high command knew that it would be a crushing blow to the French morale if they were to capture it. On February 21st, 1916, the attack began. The Germans opened fire with hundreds of artillery guns to bombard the enemy line. They then attacked with huge waves of infantry, which easily overran the destroyed French positions. Within a few days, they had captured Fort Douaumont, one of France's largest fortresses. The twenty-year-old fort was no match for this new type of warfare and was quickly destroyed by the German's massive guns. Eventually, the French were able to reinforce their positions, halting the German advance. Both sides constantly pounded each other with massive artillery barrages, which made infantry attacks extremely costly. This also turned the surrounding landscape to mud, which further impeded infantry advances. For the next few months, the two armies would attack and counter-attack each other, without either side gaining the upper hand. On July 1st, 1916, the British began the Somme Offensive. In order to focus on this new threat, the Germans had to revert troops and supplies away from Verdun, relieving the French. Shortly thereafter the Germans called off their attacks at Verdun. The French began counter-attacking, and by December 18, over 9 months since the battle began, they had retaken most of the ground they had lost. Some of the worst fighting conditions during World War 1 were seen in this battle, leading to the deaths of around 300,000 men, with many more being wounded or captured. The Battle of Verdun showed the strength and determination of the French, and revealed to the world the chaos and destructiveness of modern war.

Operation Market Garden was a failed World War II military operation fought in the Netherlands from 17 to 25 September 1944. It was the brainchild of Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery and strongly supported by Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt. The airborne part of the operation was undertaken by the First Allied Airborne Army with the land operation by XXX Corps of the British Second Army.The objective was to create a 64 mi (103 km) salient into German territory with a bridgehead over the River Rhine, creating an Allied invasion route into northern Germany This was to be achieved by seizing a series of nine bridges by Airborne forces with land forces swiftly following over the bridges. The operation succeeded in liberating the Dutch cities of Eindhoven and Nijmegen along with many towns, creating a 60 mi (97 km) salient into German-held territory limiting V-2 rocket launching sites. In July of 1945, President Harry Truman made the decision to drop the newly created Atomic Bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombs were dropped on August 6 and August 9th. Emperor Hirohito of Japan decided to surrender after the bombs were dropped and after Russia declared war on Japan at the same time. This ended World War 2. This video is a Lego recap. On December 16, 1944, the Germans launched their last major offensive of WW2, intending to split the Allies' lines in two. As the Germans advanced through the Ardennes Forest the Americans were caught completely by surprise and were pushed back, creating a bulge in their frontline which gave the battle its name. The german's initial success did not last, however, and their advance was stopped ten days later as overwhelming numbers of Allied forces arrived. In the following weeks, the Germans were driven back and lost all the ground they had previously taken. The Battle of the Bulge lasted about six weeks with both sides taking around 90,000 casualties each, but unlike the allies, the Germans had drained their resources and manpower and would never recover.
