Lego dimensions sonic pack dlc full story

Обновлено: 24.04.2024

He’s 25 years old this year, he’s blue, he’s spiky, he’d give Usain Bolt some decent competition. He’s the flagship character for one of the biggest names in the gaming industry, and in the 1990’s he had a bitter rivalry with an Italian plumber with an odd affection for mushrooms. His name is Sonic and he’s joining the LEGO multiverse.

Now into the seventh wave of expansion packs, LEGO Dimensions has already resurrected some of the greatest movie and TV franchises from the last 30 years, with more coming over the next six months. One area, however, that hasn’t seen too much attention is the video game industry, yes the Midway Arcade brought back to life some 80’s classics, but that has been about it…until now.

Probably the second biggest name in gaming history, sorry Sonic but Mario has you beat, the blue sneaker-wearing hedgehog went from strength to strength during the 8 and 16-bit console generations, even spawning a couple of TV shows in the process. Sadly, the jump to 3D has seen the once unstoppable speedster bounce between the mediocre and simply awful, with a number of games doing the once great icon very little justice.

Now our hero has a new opportunity to shine in one of the most successful games of its generation, LEGO Dimensions. With TT Games’ impressive ability to turn nostalgia into gloriously bright and beautiful bricks, and with a touch of their own charm and wit, could this be Sonic’s chance to shine in the spotlight once more? Yes it can, because this level pack is one of the best yet.

I was 8 years old when Sonic The Hedgehog made his debut and I can still remember to this day my first time switching on my SEGA Megadrive (Genesis in the US) and the greatest sound blared from my TV, “SEGA”, as Sonic himself flew across the screen. There’s a special place in my heart for that era of gaming, and so seeing what LEGO Dimensions had to offer the character couldn’t have been more exciting. Given the modern game’s 3D environment, was Sonic’s side-scrolling antics likely to be overlooked? Five seconds after I placed that character tag on the toy-plate, I knew I was in for a treat.

Before I delve further into that side, though, let’s rewind and take a look at what comes in the box, the physical LEGO treats on offer. In the box you’ll find a Sonic minifigure, his very own sports car, the Sonic Speedster and Tails’ bi-plane The Tornado.

Like many of the LEGO Dimensions minifigures, this is Sonic’s debut into the world of LEGO and as such his figure is another highly collectable exclusive. The legs piece is made up of three colours, red for his sneakers, white socks and his famous blue colouring. While detail is lacking on the torso, it’s not like he wears an elaborate outfit, it fits the characters perfectly with the light brown chest and arms, as well as white hands for his gloves. The back of the torso has a couple of additional touches with outlines for spikes and a small tail.

The highlight of the figure is the custom-made head piece, it looks glorious, featuring every inch of detail from the characters source material. From the huge blue head spikes to the subtle side mouth outline, this is 100% classic Sonic. A yellow lifebuoy piece serves perfectly as the hedgehog’s accompanying gold ring.

In-game the character isn’t filled to the brim with abilities like some of the other recent LEGO Dimensions releases, but his combination of skills are exactly what you’d expect. Obviously, his key skill is speed, this is Sonic after all, but he also has super-strength and can also grind rails and use the acrobatic poles and bounce off walls. Eventually, you’ll also have the ability to transform into Super Sonic, making the character invulnerable and increasing his ability to jump high.

The Sonic Speedster is an awesome looking sports car in its own right, matching Sonic’s primary colours, being mostly blue with hints of red and white. This is a LEGO recreation of the car driven by Sonic in the Sega All-Stars Racing games. The most interesting thing about this vehicle over similar models is the pre-printed headlights and front bumper on the purpose-built bonnet of the vehicle, I’ve not seen that much detail appear on any of the other sports cars in LEGO Dimensions. In addition, the fins on the back look truly superb. Meant to look like Sonic’s spikes, they’re created using blue claw clips which are folded down.

In-game, the vehicle doesn’t have too many uses in its default form, with the bulk standard generic abilities. Of course, it does have two additional configurations which can be unlocked in-game, both of which provide a bit more variety. The Blue Typhoon, for example, can fly, sonar smash and use flight docks and a cargo hook. The Moto Bug also adds to the available abilities with super jump, the ability to dig and cut through vines.

The Tornado is officially one of my favourite micro-builds of LEGO Dimensions. Based on the plane flown by Sonic’s sidekick Tails in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the mixture of red, yellow and black really make this vehicle stand out in your collection. Built entirely from standard bricks, the clever use of pieces you’d not expect to see make the build a fascinating experience on its own. The plane even includes a fully rotating propeller.

In-game the Tornado has the same abilities are The Blue Typhoon minus the sonar smash, though with this vehicles the abilities are available out of the box. You can, of course, use your studs to unlock the other two configurations in-game, Crabmeat and Eggcatcher, the only real advantage of this coming from the former’s laser ability.

So, as you’ll see, there are plenty of nods to Sonic’s history before you’ve even started playing the new franchise-exclusive level included, Sonic’s the name, speed’s my game! The story for this mini campaign is fairly standard for Sonic games, but with a LEGO Dimensions twist. Doctor Robotnik….sorry, Eggman, is using the chaos emeralds to power one of the LEGO multiverse’s keystones and open up dimensional portals. Our hero’s job is to obtain all of the emeralds before the evil Doctor, navigate the multiple dimensions (all of which seem to be based on old Sonic levels), and save the world, no pressure then.

The level itself is impressively extensive given it is just the one level, with multiple locations, each with their own massive environments and unique puzzles. There are a good couple of hours of gameplay here if you’re not rushing through it at Sonic’s pace. Where the level really succeeds, is how it takes influences from across Sonic’s 25-year history, from the initial Green Hill Zone to the evil Doctor’s Space Station, including a battle with metal Sonic, this is a blue hedgehog fan’s dream.

My personal highlight is the fantastic recreation of Sonic 2’s bonus levels, these serve as interim points between the different platform-based environments and brilliantly captures the fun and excitement of 90’s Sonic. The gameplay across the level varies quite significantly thanks to the LEGO Dimensions elements thrown into Sonic’s world, after all, this is far from just a 3D recreation of Sonic’s greatest hits. In addition to the Sonic standard of running, jumping and spinning, there are vehicle specific features, including a brilliant aerial battle involving the Tornado.

The one disappointment I found was the lack of original Sonic The Hedgehog soundtrack, a very good approximation is used, but you really can’t beat the original music when you’re trying to create an atmosphere of nostalgia. That said, there are a few further throwbacks with the audio, including one sound effect that many gamers will be familiar with when Sonic finds himself underwater in the Labyrinth.

The franchise open-world hub is also unlocked with this expansion pack and it’s another joyous celebration of the character’s history with areas dedicated to the most infamous of the zones from the classic games. As is the standard in LEGO Dimensions, the world is filled with plenty of additional puzzles and collectables to keep you occupied for hours.

Overall, the Sonic the hedgehog level pack is a work of art, a stunning homage to one of gaming history’s best. The level provides plenty of varied gameplay and enough nods to the original 90’s series to please even the most avid fans. The minifigure and accompanying vehicles are a joy to construct and will stand out in the crowd as your LEGO Dimensions collection continues to grow.

Despite the character not adding too much value in terms of new abilities, the gaming gravitas of Sonic means he’ll always be a great addition to the team, whatever adventure you’re on.

Story Mode Plot

What starts off as a normal LEGO recreation of a level from Sonic the Hedgehog turns on its head when Doctor Eggman lays his hand on some of the Keystones in order to rule over the world. It's up to the player and Sonic to stop Eggman and his plans and save the Sonic the Hedgehog World.

Walkthrough

Abilities Needed to Complete the Level 100%

Citizen in Peril

In Breakfast Kingdom, you'll see Big almost drowning in a vat of coffee. To save him, you'll need characters with the Technology Ability to get him out of the vat.

The level starts with an opening related to the old Sonic games with Sonic holding a ring in front of a rift. Then you play through Green Hill Zone to Tails' Lab to tell him he's got the last Chaos Emerald until Eggman shows up to get the last one for his collection of emeralds, so he gave him a choice, either to save his friends or to stop him with a keystone device, which he can control the dimensions for years to come, until he gets distracted by Sonic's usual complements which gave him time to save Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Big, then Sonic asks if anybody has seen Amy anywhere. Then the device activates which then sends Eggman and the emeralds to an unknown location, until when Big, Knuckles and Shadow got sucked into another location, Sonic then tells Tails to think of a plan while he was gone. Sonic and Eggman were near the ocean and after the fight, then send them to space, which he summons his 3 metal counterparts, Robo, Mecha, and Metal Sonic, which he defeats. One of the scraps hit the device and 3 Portals came up, releasing some objects, so Sonic ran after him until a blue light came through and Chaos appears in a puddle.

Lego Dimensions title screen.jpg

Lego Dimensions is an action-adventure game in which Lego versions of various franchises cross-over. It follows the toys-to-life format that Skylanders started where the game comes with a portal on which you place Lego figures which you can then use in the game. Sonic is one of the characters in the second series of packs released for the game. He was included in a Level Pack, along with a build for the Sonic Speedster and the Tornado. Sonic also voiced an ad for promoting the "Knight Rider" Lego Dimensions Pack.

Contents

Story (Main Game)

Batman from DC Comics, Wyldstyle from The LEGO Movie, Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings, and many other characters must embark on an adventure across the many dimensions to stop the evil Lord Vortech, who plots to use the "Foundation Elements" scattered across dimensions to rule over all existence.

Story (Ghostbusters (2016))

During the fourth chapter of the Ghostbusters (2016) Story Pack, "Breaking the Barrier", a boss fight against a possessed Eggman parade balloon takes place. The balloon fires laser blasts and missiles at the Ghostbusters while Buzz Bomber ghosts appear from the sides to attack. The Eggman balloon is ultimately defeated by inflating a Sonic balloon that comes to life and attacks it, exposing its weak points and allowing the Ghostbusters to send it flying. In the accompanying Adventure World, a purchasable renovation allows the Sonic balloon to be installed above Times Square.

Story (Sonic Dimensions)

The story starts with a LEGO-styled Sonic 1 title screen. A LEGO version of Sonic is seen taking a stroll through Green Hill Zone, destroying Dr. Eggman's infiltrating robots. Once the player takes Sonic to the end, he finds a Goal Post with a Warp Ring above it. He jumps into the ring and ends up in a Special Stage styled after Sonic The Hedgehog 2. He reaches the end and finds a Chaos Emerald waiting for him. He heads back to Tails' Workshop in hopes of getting there before Dr. Eggman does, but unfortunately for him, the doctor was able to reach the workshop before him. He tied up Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, and Big, in an attempt to make Sonic give up the last Chaos Emerald, which would give him possession of all seven Emeralds. He also reveals he is in possession of a Keystone Device, one of the main game's key weapons, attached to the front of his Egg Mobile. This allows him to access any dimension, as well as summon any object or being he wants to in order to achieve his plan of not only world domination, but this time universal domination. This ambush plan fails however, as Sonic distracts him long enough (by complimenting his mustache) to rescue Tails and the others, except for Amy, who seems to have gone missing. Eggman's Keystone Device starts to malfunction for unknown reasons, automatically activating multiple portals to other dimensions, which suck up not only much of the terrain of Green Hill, but also Knuckles, Shadow, Big, and Eggman himself. Sonic tells Tails that he's gonna go after Eggman, while telling Tails to come up with a plan. He leaves Tails, who seems a bit lost on how to start his part of the plan.

On the other side of Sonic's portal, he ends up in Emerald Coast from Sonic Adventure. But before he can recall where he is, a killer whale starts to chase him. He manages to outrun it, but get stuck on a lone island. He ends up destroying enough objects on the island to allow him to use the LEGO pieces to build himself a car, the Sonic Speedster. He uses it to jump on ramps he also builds to get from island to island, until he finally reaches Eggman at the end of the coast. He manages to stop the doctor with his new vehicle, but Eggman manages to escape into another portal. Sonic jumps through it and enters another Special Stage. He obtains the second Chaos Emerald, and meets up with Eggman in what appears to be the Death Egg.

Eggman reminds Sonic that he can summon any enemy he wants to, including Sonic's past metal counterparts. He first summons Mecha Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog 2 16-bit boss) from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (named Robo Sonic in this game), though he doesn't prove much of a challenge. He then summons Mecha Sonic (Sonic & Knuckles boss) from Sonic and Knuckles, but he also manages to be defeated. Finally, the doctor manages to find a Metal Sonic from Sonic CD, but a version in which he managed to beat Sonic during the events of the Little Planet fiasco. They both put up a good fight until Metal Sonic ends up going into an automatic hyperdrive, which gives Sonic just enough of an advantage to destroy him much to Eggman's dismay. The victory is short lived however, as the Keystone Device starts to malfunction once again from parts flying into it, creating more portals to other dimensions. Eggman escapes, with Sonic giving chase. However one more portal opens once Sonic leaves, revealing a familiar water monster is left to ruminate on the Death Egg.

Sonic goes through another Special Stage and obtains the third Emerald, where he reaches his new destination: Metropolis Zone. After going through some of the smaller robotic threats, he comes to a security room, guarded by two E-Series robots. Before he has much time to think about it, Tails appears on a monitor above him. He gives Sonic some advise on how to go about destroying the guards, and creates a portal himself using some tech he finds to teleport himself and Sonic's plane, the Tornado. Before he goes through though, the Tornado comes back into pieces, leaving Tails to think twice about going through just yet, though he does find the instructions to help Sonic rebuild his plane. After building it, Sonic uses it to shoot down Eggman, who is flying above Metropolis looking out for the hedgehog. He manages to escape through a portal before any real damage to his Egg Mobile is done. Sonic follows through, goes into another Special Stage, collects the fourth Emerald, and heads on into Marble Zone. There, he meets up with Omochao, much to his distaste. While Omochao offers him 'helpful' advice on how to proceed, Sonic goes through solving the puzzles in the area to find a way out. While Omochao tries to help out, he eventually gets lost somewhere, but quickly catches up with Sonic before he finds Eggman again. They duke it out once more, Eggman escapes, Sonic follows, he enters another Special Stage, and retrieves the fifth Emerald.

While in the dimensional rift, Sonic catches up the Eggman and tears off the Keystone Device from his Egg Mobile. He uses it to temporarily throw Eggman into another dimension. Once the doctor is dealt with, he uses the device to summon some terrain from Green Hill for him to land on. He then summons back Omochao, Knuckles, Shadow, and Big onto the terrain. Sonic lets everyone know he obtained the device, and Knuckles suggests that Sonic would be best to fix the situation since he possess the device. Sonic reminds him however that there are still two Chaos Emeralds somewhere. Big then remembers that he saw one at what he describes to be the Labyrinth Zone. Petrified about the idea of going back there, he reluctantly agrees to go to obtain the Emerald.

He overcomes his fears in the Lost Labyrinth from Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and finds another Special Stage ring. He enters it and collects the sixth Emerald. He meets up with his friends and lets them know he got the Emerald. Tails then shows up frantically in the Tornado 2 telling Eggman has rebuilt the Death Egg. Sonic goes along with Tails to go and finally finish off the doctor. Once Sonic arrives, Eggman appears in his Death Egg Robot from Sonic 2, containing the last emerald inside. After a long scrumish, Sonic is able to take down the robot. As Sonic taunts Eggman for running away so easily, the doctor reveals he isn't running from Sonic, but rather the site behind Sonic. Chaos, who was teleported here earlier from the Mecha Sonic fight, has managed to harness some kind of power to grow in both size and strength. Chaos takes the Keystone Device that Tails was holding onto for Sonic and gains the Elemental Powers it holds from the main game's story. Eggman appears on a monitor telling Sonic to destroy Chaos for he damages his Death Egg, but when asked to give Sonic the Emerald so he can turn into Super Sonic, he refuses. Sonic is able to hold him off for a bit, but isn't able to due much due to his increased power. Eventually, Amy finally shows up from Eggman's monitor to smack him aside with her Piko Piko Hammer. She takes the final Emerald and gives it to Sonic. Sonic then goes into his Super form, which helps him easily defeat Chaos then teleporting him into another dimension. With the damages done to the Death Egg due to Sonic's fight with Chaos, it starts to fall apart. Amy starts to fall off the opening of the Death Egg, but luckily Super Sonic manages to create a portal for Amy to go back home before she falls to her doom, leaving Eggman behind to plan his revenge once again. Sonic thanks Tails for his help as they go through the portal, leaving their fate unknown, but implying things go back to normal.

The ending of the Sonic Dimensions story was meant to transition into a later story chapter, which would converge stories set up in other level packs and explain what happened to Lord Vortech following the events of the main story. However, due to the cancellation of the game's planned third year of content, this chapter was never released and the cliffhanger was left unresolved.

Inclusion of Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog was announced as as a level pack as part of Wave 7 and released in November 2016. It contains three buildable figures, a brand new level, and an Adventure World based on Sonic's past.
