Lego knights of ren

Обновлено: 26.04.2024

Many fans don't know why the Knights of Ren are so intimidating, but the latest LEGO Star Wars Halloween special gives fans a peek at why.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales, now streaming on Disney+.

With the Halloween season in full swing, LEGO Star Wars has joined in on the festivities with a brand new holiday special: LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales. The special is an anthology that covers the history of Star Wars and tells some of its creepiest stories. One example of this, "The Lost Boy," recounts when Ben Solo was first introduced to the Knights of Ren and how it led to his eventual turn to the Dark Side. What the special does that no other Star Wars film has done is show just how scary the Knights are .

Following his first encounter with the Knights, Ben goes home and tries to sleep it off. Instead, he is met with a terrifying nightmare that shows how unsettling the LEGO Star Wars special can be. The sequence starts with Ben looking at his ceiling and seeing the face of the Knights leader, Ren (Christian Slater), looking back at him, but the ceiling begins to elongate and get closer to his face as he whispers, "join us, Ben."

Ben quickly awakens, thinking he's out of his nightmare, but his setting changes to the town he was in earlier, except now there's a green fog that blocks his vision. Once again, he hears Ren beckoning him to join them as he approaches with a blade grinding against the ground. Luke then appears, trying to steer Ben away from the darkness, but Ren quickly silences him and promises immeasurable power is at his fingertips.

Han Solo quickly appears following Luke, asking Ben if he's coming home for dinner. Leia and Chewie also walk up, with his mother telling him that Chewie made Roast Tip Yip and Bantha sauce, Ben's favorite. However, when Chewie uncovers the dish, Ren's head is there instead, asking Ben once again to join the Knights.

Luke and the other younglings try once again to pull Ben toward the light, and his classmates quickly form a circle around him, singing ring around the roses in Huttese. The scene becomes even eerier when the children slowly turn into the Knights of Ren. As Ben's nerves reach a breaking point, he sinks into the ground and falls into the mouth of Ren, who appears as a giant head below him. Ben finally awakens from his nightmare only to see his tormentor outside, calling his name.

While the scene still has its funny moments, there's an air of scariness just below the surface that plays on the tropes found in many horror movies. Some examples include a dream within a dream and children creepily singing a nursery rhyme. There's also the underlying realization that he will ultimately join the Knights and become Kylo Ren, signaling the end of the Jedi Order once again.

The Knights of Ren never got their chance to show just how intimidating they truly were. However, they were at least able to maintain a degree of importance within the films, thanks to the reputation they earned over the years. Nevertheless, the LEGO Star Wars short shows that while they didn't show their full potential, they aren't a group to be trifled with.

In fact, they have the ability to reach into a person's mind and become living nightmares. Unfortunately, while Ben may have been strong enough to overcome their intimidation games, many others were not so lucky, and Ben's creepy dream sequence shows why.

To see the Knights of Ren in action, LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales is streaming now on Disney+.

The Knights of Ren is an organization introduced in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Kylo Ren is the highest-ranking member among this group as he is the master of the knights. Despite their alliance with the First Order, the Knights of Ren are not part of the formal hierarchy of the organization, as their agendas trump that of the First Order's commanding officers. It is unknown how many knights existed, but twelve have been seen so far. Before being led by Kylo, they had a leader who called himself "Ren", until Ben Solo killed him and took his place.

Dating back centuries, the Knights of Ren were an almost-mythical group of marauders that followed the ideology of the "Ren". This ideology was based around following the will of the dark side itself, rather than their own selfish interests. As the Sith did, they lived how they chose, took what they wanted, and consumed what the dark side sent them. All the Knights of Ren are Force-sensitive, but their strength with the dark side of the Force is middling and amateurish. Additionally, each Knight of Ren is a weapons specialist, and trained with their own unique and deadly weapon of choice.

As of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Knights of Ren were all wiped out by the redeemed Ben Solo.

Background

Organization

The Knights of Ren include Ben Solo/Kylo Ren, whom Supreme Leader Snoke refers to as the master of the Knights of Ren. Despite Kylo having this title, the Knights of Ren are actually loyal to Palpatine, the Dark Lord of the Sith, as they also refer to him as "master" and have been following his orders all along.

As a member of the Knights of Ren, Kylo is not officially part of the hierarchy of the First Order. Despite this, he operates freely within the order, which tolerates his presence with some hesitation as his agenda does not strictly coincide with their own. Kylo wears a black and silver helmet and garb similar to the battle gear worn by the other members of the Knights of Ren.

Knights of Ren titles

  • Master of the Knights of Ren: This is a title granted to Ben Solo after he became the leader of the knights.

History

The Knights of Ren operated for many centuries before the Galactic Civil War. The Knights of Ren were a new generation of shadowy acolytes that filled the void of the dark side of the Force after the destruction of the Sith Order at the Battle of Endor.

After Ben Solo killed their previous leader, Ren, he became the master of the knights and adopted the name of Kylo Ren. Along with Kylo Ren, the Knights of Ren started to work under the command of Supreme Leader Snoke, who used them as a tool of the dark side of the Force, alongside the First Order. However, as Palpatine created Snoke, and used him as a puppet, the Dark Lord of the Sith was secretly their true commander. Approximately six years after the destruction of Luke Skywalker's Jedi Temple, the Knights of Ren, particularly Kylo Ren, under the orders of Snoke, were to find and kill Luke Skywalker (the last Jedi in the galaxy) as Snoke knew that as long as Luke lived, a new generation of Jedi Knights could rise again.

When Snoke was killed by Kylo Ren, who took his place as the Supreme Leader, the Knights of Ren served him in the same way that Snoke's Praetorian Guards had, following him into battle and serving as his body guards. However, their true allegiance was to Palpatine all along, as they discovered that he had resurrected himself many years ago. They were stationed on Exegol when Kylo returned as Ben, having redeemed himself. Ben, after a lengthy battle where he was badly beaten, was given his grandfather's lightsaber by Rey through their Force-bond and quickly killed his former allies, ending the Knights of Ren for good.

Appearances

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

In the sequel trilogy, the Knights of Ren are a threat to the Republic, being subordinates to the First Order. Kylo Ren serves as their leader under Snoke's guidance. Snoke refers to Kylo as "Master of the Knights of Ren". They appear in a vision Rey had on Takodana, in which they are seen massacring a group of people in a rainy location.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Kylo Ren is the only member of the Knights of Ren that appears in this film. The organization and the other members neither appear nor are mentioned.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

The Knights of Ren are first seen accompanying Kylo Ren when he has his destroyed helmet repaired. They later join Kylo on Pasaana, where they kidnap Chewbacca after he gets separated from Rey, Finn, Poe, BB-8 and C-3PO.

The Knights of Ren appear much later in the film, after Ben Solo has been redeemed. They corner him on Exegol before he can get to Palpatine and Rey. They attack him, prompting Rey to give him Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber via the Force. Ben then engages in a six-versus-one fight with the Knights of Ren and eventually manages to kill all of them. The battle starts when the Knights start beating Kylo, slightly scarring his face. While the knights surround their former leader, Rey gives Anakin's lightsaber to him through their Force-bond. When Ben gets his grandfather's saber, the knights recoil slightly confused. Ben shrugs his hands (similar as his father did during the Battle of Endor). Ben immediately kills Kuruk and Cardo with a fatal swing from his grandfather's lightsaber before restraining Vicrul's scythe. He Force pushes Ap'lek to send him into a hole, making him fall to his death, before stabbing Vicrul. Ben then effortlessly stabs Trudgen in the chest and then jumps over Ushar, killing this last knight with a stab through the back.

Portrayals

In The Rise of Skywalker, the actors who played Knights of Ren are listed as follows:

World's No. 1 source for LEGO news, reviews, and fan creations.

As we continue our reviews of summer 2020 LEGO Star Wars sets, we’re moving on from The Clone Wars and Original Trilogy to the third wave of sets from the final movie in the Skywalker Saga, The Rise of Skywalker. 75284 Knights of Ren Transport Ship includes 595 pieces with three minifigs, and will be available September 1st (US $69.99 | CAN $99.99 | UK £64.99). The set rounds out the full group of Knights of Ren minifigures, but is it more than a cash grab for minifig collectors?

The box & packaging

The set’s 600 or so parts are spread across four bags, with the instruction booklet loose in the bag. There is no sticker sheet on this nearly all-black (and sometimes very very dark gray) vehicle, so the lack of sleeve on the instruction booklet certainly reduces packaging waste.

The front of the box features minifigure Darth Vader in the corner, sharing a design with the box for 75291 Death Star Final Duel. The appearance of Darth Vader rather than a character from the Sequel Trilogy is another odd choice, just like the difference in character style from the Clone Wars sets. The back of the box shows the set’s limited play features

The build

What becomes evident fairly quickly during the build is that the LEGO version of this transport ship is not just much smaller than it would be at “proper” minifig scale but essentially just a black shell of plates surrounding a rather flimsy Technic frame.

The sub-assemblies for the engines attach to the fuselage via Technic axles, but the hoses (much less prominent on the movie vehicle) that connect forward from the fuselage push against this fairly loose connection, forcing them out at a slight angle. Similarly, the forward armor is connected with click hinges, which have a small amount of “give” between each click, resulting in somewhat loose sections near the front.

The finished model

Although the finished model is certainly recognizable as the Night Buzzard seen briefly in The Rise of Skywalker, the LEGO version leaves much to be desired. The menacing Night Buzzard is certainly angular, but its angularity stems at least partly from sleek lines and minimal greebling on the armored surface. At this scale, the studded surface of plates and wedges — studs that fade into the background on much larger vehicles — are distracting.

The dark gray and dark tan surface details also distract from what is a fairly uniform, “stealth” style of ship (plumes of black smoke spewing from engines with a rattling sound loud enough to hear in space notwithstanding).

The ship’s dorsal laser cannon turrets are present, but do not rotate. Instead, they have hatches where you can place minifigure gunners. With the scale mismatch between the vehicle and the characters, this means that the Knights of Ren are sitting outside the surface of their spacefaring vessel.

Both turrets have clips on the inside, though they’re placed in such a way that there’s no use for them when a minifig is in the turret — you can’t attach and store their weapons, leaving them to wave their guns around in space while ignoring the turrets they’re manning.

A larger forward hatch opens to reveal a space that can fit a seated minifig, but it’s just a box, lacking any controls or other sense of purpose. Perhaps this is where you can throw their weapons so they can focus on firing their turrets (though exposed as they are in space perhaps they should be focusing on breathing).

The final play feature is a pair of spring-loaded missile launchers attached under the forward armor plates, activated with Technic axles that extend out behind the armor.

Three landing pads are some of the sturdier components of the ship, built with Technic liftarms attached to skis.

The minifigures

Four other Knights of Ren minifigures have appeared in the two earlier waves of LEGO Star Wars sets from The Rise of Skywalker, with the final two in this set completing the crew of six. The set includes Cardo and Kuruk, each with their distinctive helmets and weapons, plus Rey.

The Rey minifigure is the same as the white-robed version in 75250 Pasaana Speeder Chase

Kuruk and Cardo are of course the big draw of this set. Each wears a helmet unique to the figure (and this set), with unique torso and leg printing. Kuruk’s slit blinder panels are particularly interesting, while Cardo wears a helmet that looks more like true knight’s armor. His arm cannon is brick-built, though considerably over-sized like most brick-built minifig weapons.

The minifigs’ heads are plain black under the helmets. Although Kuruk’s is a full helmet, the black head piece shows through in the eye slit for Cardo. The torsos are also incredibly detailed, with a mix of robes and additional weaponry or ammunition, like plasma bolt shells on Kuruk and thermal detonators on Cardo.

Their backs are more plain, printed with cloth and shoulder pauldron patterns.

For those interested in completing their collection of Knights of Ren minifigures, here is the list of LEGO Star Wars sets you’ll have to purchase, totaling $370 (USD):

  • Ap’lek & Ushar in 75256 Kylo Ren’s Shuttle at $130, or $28.38 and $27.01 individually on BrickLink (at average prices).
  • Vicrul in 75273 Poe Dameron’s X-wing Fighter at $90, or $33.17 individually.
  • Trudgeon in 75272 Sith TIE Fighter for $80, or $28.87 individually.
  • Kuruk & Cardo in 75284 Knights of Ren Transport Ship at $70, with an unknown future price individually.

While I’m not necessarily suggesting that LEGO should have released a $15 “Knights of Ren Battle Pack” (no, we’ve heard no rumors of any such thing) with at least four of the six knights, spreading them across three waves — October 2019 ahead of the movie, January 2020 after its release, and now September 2020 — and only including them in sets above $70 is an obvious tactic to drive sales among collectors. It’s also worth noting in this context that LEGO themselves now directly profit from exorbitant secondary market prices, through the LEGO Group’s acquisition of BrickLink late last year.

Conclusions & recommendation

At $70 for what amounts to a flimsy, undersized vehicle and just two unique minifigs, it’s hard to recommend this set at anything other than deep discount — or buying the minifigs individually on the secondary market after the set’s release, if you’re willing to pay about $30 for each of the six Knights of Ren minifigs from across four sets. The set has the feeling of a product designed by a committee to fill an empty price point in a lineup of sets while drawing in collectors with otherwise unavailable minifigs. In other words, it feels less like a labor of love from the incredibly talented LEGO Star Wars design team or a gift to fans — as many LEGO Star Wars sets truly do — than the cash grab I feared it would be when I opened the set.

Others’ opinions may vary, and are certainly welcome in the comments. But as one of the few people outside LEGO so far who’s had an opportunity to actually build the set ahead of its release in September, it would be irresponsible for me as a reviewer to express anything other than disappointment.

The LEGO Group sent The Brothers Brick an early copy of this set for review. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews.

Кайло Рен на обложке журнала Vanity Fair

Vanity Fair
