Background

The Mandalorians were a clan-based cultural group that was composed of members from multiple species all bound by a common culture, creed, and code. They originated on the planet Mandalore in the galaxy's Outer Rim Territories and had a particularly important role in galactic history as legendary warriors against the Jedi. From their homeworld, Mandalorians had flourished across Mandalorian Space and the galaxy at large, colonizing worlds such as Kalevala, Krownest, and Concord Dawn.

Mandalore had a largely martial history, but since the Mandalorian Civil War, pacifist sentiment had begun to emerge, and by the time of the Clone Wars, the Mandalorians had been reformed under the New Mandalorian regime led by Duchess Satine Kryze of House Kryze while the Old Mandalorians scattered across the galaxy as mercenaries. Under the New Mandalorian government, Mandalore remained neutral and participated in the Council of Neutral Systems as a leading member. Despite enjoying decades of peace, conflict persisted between the New Mandalorian government and factions such as Death Watch, a group of exiled Mandalorian warriors who wanted Mandalore to return to the traditional warlike ways of the past. Such conflict led to another civil war by 19 BBY that toppled the ruling New Mandalorian regime and restored the old Mandalorians, but the conflict culminated in the occupation of Mandalore by the Galactic Republic and its subsequent government, the Galactic Empire.

Following the rise of the Empire, Bo-Katan Kryze was made Regent of Mandalore, but she refused to follow Emperor Sheev Palpatine. As a result, she was replaced with Gar Saxon, a Death Watch Mandalorian super commando, who was installed as Viceroy over Mandalore, his rule enforced by the Imperial Super Commandos. As with many worlds in the galaxy, Mandalore was oppressed under Imperial rule, with weapons such as the Arc Pulse Generator being developed to pacify and reign in the war-like civilization. Clan Saxon eventually came into conflict with Clan Kryze, Clan Wren, and the former leader of the Mandalorian Protectors Fenn Rau. After the deaths of Gar Saxon and his brother and successor, Governor Tiber Saxon, and with the support of the early Rebellion, Bo-Katan Kryze claimed the Darksaber and took the title Mand'alor. Kryze united the Mandalorian resistance as another civil war erupted on Mandalore, a part of the galaxy-wide struggle against Imperial rule.

After the fall of the Empire and the rise of the New Republic, and following the Empire's Great Purge of the Mandalorians, some Mandalorians went into hiding. One such group was called "the Tribe," who hid in a covert on the planet Nevarro. However, the Tribe were forced to relocate after revealing themselves to protect one of their own. The Tribe was eventually wiped out by an Imperial remnant, but some of its members survived.

Limitless adventures await youngsters as they build their own army with this Mandalorian Battle Pack (75267)! This compact construction playset includes 4 LEGO® Star Wars™ Mandalorian warrior minifigures with stud-shooting blasters, a buildable defense fort and a Mandalorian speeder bike with 2 stud shooters to spark children's imaginations.

Another dimension!
The printed building instructions that come with all LEGO sets are easy to follow, but interactive Instructions PLUS, available within the free LEGO Life app, add another dimension. Even younger kids can simply zoom in on, rotate and view the construction model as they build the real-life version.

Awesome! Star Wars action in LEGO style!
The LEGO Group has been creating brick-built versions of iconic Star Wars starships, vehicles, locations and characters for over two decades. There is a huge array of sets for play and display that make great Christmas presents and birthday or special occasion gifts for fans of all ages.

We’re now well and truly into 2020, which means a new wave of LEGO sets has hit store shelves across the world (if a little later in some places thanks to shipping delays). Wish lists are being furiously updated, wallets are being emptied, Bricklink’s parts guide is expanding, and of course LEGO Star Wars collectors everywhere are making space for new squadrons in their army builds. Yes, it’s time for more Star Wars battle packs, and both offerings for winter 2020 are intriguing and sure to provide builders with plenty of inspiration. Here, I’ll be taking a look at LEGO Mandalorian Battle Pack, set 75267, one of two sets based on the hit Disney+ show The Mandalorian.

Who are they?

At a first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking these four folks are just brightly-coloured doppelgängers of Boba Fett. After all, they wear the same style of armour with the same distinct helmet shape (and if you read my review of 75266, you might be starting to see a pattern of recycled and recoloured designs). These are in fact Mandalorians, members of a warrior culture from the planet Mandalore, fierce combatants with a creed of honour, strength and family binding them all. One doesn’t have to be from the same planet or species to become a Mandalorian, as is clear with the Disney+ show’s protagonist, but likewise wearing the armour doesn’t automatically make you one either (it is implied Boba Fett and his father Jango simply stole the armour rather than earning it).

In recent years, the Mandalorians have become almost as integral to the Star Wars universe as the Jedi and Sith. The clash between their warrior past and peaceful present is the crux of much of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, shadowy alliances with the Empire and civil wars are present in Star Wars: Rebels, and now we have The Mandalorian, on which this set is based, which explores the mentality of a single mercenary from this culture. Without saying too much, it’s a wonderful show, a tonal departure from much of Disney’s other Star Wars content but a welcome one, and it gives us a much closer look at how the Mandalorians have adapted to life after the fall of the Empire.

The four Mandalorians in this set are part of a secretive enclave hoping to rebuild their society, the mantra of “This is the way” pervading everything they do. Their armour is individualised, possibly reflecting bloodlines or clans instead of being one unified, militaristic force. And oh boy, does their appearance in the show leave quite the impression.

With all that said, let’s take a look at the set itself.

Minifigures

Can you see the resemblance?

There are four Mandalorians in this set, each one completely unique. While this makes for an amazing array of minifigures (which I’ll get to in a second) this does present a new challenge: is it possible to army-build a battle pack that’s made up of “characters”? Well, I’d argue this isn’t much of an issue. Various Star Wars shows and books have established that Mandalorians assemble in clans, so having multiple green or dark orange Mandalorians could be exactly that.

When I say “characters”, I don’t mean that any of these four Mandos are named, so let’s first look at the Grey Female Mando. The design on the minifig is excellent, detailed without being difficult to discern at this scale or being overly complicated, and the sand blue with orange highlights provide a nice contrast to each other, and a colour combination not often seen in LEGO sets. There is some simple printing on the legs too, and she comes with a black cape. For me, this minifigure is one of the highlights of the pack. Not only is the printing great, but she strongly resembles illustrations of Mirta Gev, Boba Fett’s granddaughter from the pre-Disney Star Wars universe.

Next is the Dark Brown Male Mando, who has the least printing but might arguably be the best for army-building. While his legs are bare, he does have the fewest singularly identifying features, making him the least of a “character”. I could definitely see myself getting a large number of these for an army as opposed to Blue Male Mando.

Blue Male Mando is an excellent minifigure. To my eye, it doesn’t look like he represents any specific characters from the show, though the blue is reminiscent of the Heavy Infantry Mandalorian from Episode 3. He is the only Mando in the set to wear a lighter cape. This one is a pale green, and his blue armour is pockmarked all over, including a huge purple welt on his head. As great a feature as this is, the purple damage does make him the most identifiable as an individual, and probably the least good for army building.

Finally we have Green Female Mando. Her body armour is a mix of dark green, regular green, and dark blue arms. She wears a brown cape and brown gloves, and overall the aesthetic reminds me very much of the forces on Kashyyyk or Endor, whose armour is painted to camouflage them with their lush environments. I could easily see this Mando as being ready for forest warfare.

Overall, it is a stellar set of minifigures. Perhaps it would take some modifications to army build a couple of them, but you could definitely create some interesting new factions from these.

Build

As I said in my last review, the builds in battle packs have a habit of being quite boring or unrelated to actual Star Wars vehicles. LEGO Mandalorian Battle Pack is a little more interesting, as not only does it seem to be based on a real speeder – a Balutar-class swoop bike, as seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars – it’s also a remake of a previous set.

lego mandalorian battle pack minifigures

You see, we’ve had another LEGO Mandalorian Battle Pack before in the form of 7914, which represents a different time period for the titular warriors. The 2011 set was meant to represent the Death Watch clan from The Clone Wars, a faction who wanted to overthrow the then-current Mandalorian government and became embroiled in the machinations of Darth Maul. The set featured four minifigures, but these Mandos all wore the same blue-and-grey uniforms, like an organised military. They too rode a Balutar-class swoop bike, and comparing the two, their designs are quite similar. However, the newer version has traded a blue colour scheme in for a battle-damaged, desert-stricken dark tan and light grey pattern, as though it has seen many years of wear and tear, perfectly complimenting the dusty and battle-hardened aesthetics of the 2020 Mandos.

The previous version of the swoop bike from 7914.

It’s great to see this level of continuity between these two sets, especially given that they’re a whole 9 years apart. The swoop bike doesn’t make an appearance in The Mandalorian, so it would have been easy for LEGO to just include more rock outcroppings or a mounted gun in place of a vehicle. Instead they chose to show the decline of Mandalorian society, just like the show did, which I think lends the set an interesting quality for collectors old enough to have the previous set.

There is of course some obligatory rock as well as the bike. It’s barely worth mentioning, as I’m sure after the second or third battle pack, army builders will simply dump these parts into their collection. It does provide some nice cover for any Mandos wanting to avoid enemy fire, and has space for a stud-shooter gun to be mounted in itself, but it’s otherwise just an assortment of small bricks and cheese slopes.

Verdict

LEGO Mandalorian Battle Pack is exemplary! It’s rare to get a wave of Star Wars sets with two great battle packs in, but LEGO have taken 2020 off to a strong start indeed.

At £12.99 / $14.99 / 14.99€, I would recommend this set. The price-per-part ratio is as high as battle packs usually are, but I think that the minifigures included and the quality of their printing justify the price tag. And of course, I’m sure it will be on sale in a couple of months, so if money’s tight, you’re likely just 9 or 10 weeks away from being able to recreate “that scene” from The Mandalorian Episode 3 for yourself.

MOBILE 72 1

The Mandalorian was a breath of fresh air in the Star Wars fandom, and with it came an onslaught of incredible LEGO sets. From small army builder sets to large ships and statues, there’s not a corner of the LEGO market that hasn’t been dominated by the hit Disney + show.

Today, I’ll be ranking every LEGO Mandalorian set released as of Fall 2021. This list only includes brick-built sets (so no keychains, plushies, etc.) and only sets that are truly based off of The Mandalorian series, meaning a set like Bo-Katan’s Mandalorian Starfighter is not eligible.

11.) The Mandalorian and the Child: BrickHeadz

81gc1CAOzjL. AC SL1500

This set is from the LEGO subtheme BrickHeadz, which seems to be LEGO’s attempt to cash in on the Funko Pop demographic with stylized figures with cartoonishly large heads. These display well, but after they’re built, there’s not much to do with them. If you’re a builder with limited space and a preference for displaying instead of playing, this is a great set for you!

10.) Trouble on Tatooine

This set calls back to the first episode of The Mandalorian Season 2, where Din Djarin and Grogu track down the owner of Boba Fett’s armor, Cobb Vanth. Unfortunately, this set focuses on the Mandlalorian’s skirmish with the Sand People and not Cobb Vanth, leaving this set with not much exclusivity packed into it. Still, LEGO fans will remember this set as the first one to include the Mandalorian’s now-iconic Beskar armor, so it will always retain a level of nostalgic value.

9.) 2021 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar

81nnhoo CXL. AC SL1500

LEGO and Star Wars have partnered to create advent calendars every year since 2011, so this year’s calendar marks the 10th anniversary of the series. Though LEGO didn’t point that out, it’s subtly honored this year with our first-ever “focused” advent calendar. Most times, the LEGO advent calendars will draw from a wide range of source material as opposed to one movie or show (see Harry Potter, Marvel, etc. for examples). 2021 gave us a LEGO Star Wars Advent calendar completely devoted to The Mandalorian, which offers a nice way for collectors to get some exclusive figures and add some weaponry, scenery, and small vehicles to their Mando collections.

8.) AT-ST Raider

91 grNGfrL. AC SL1500

This was the first true Mandalorian LEGO set, and included the first-ever minifigure of our helmeted hero. It came out before the series premiered, therefore nobody knew what it would be referencing in the series until the episode came out. Still, LEGO fans tend to love AT-STs, and this set was no exception. This is a very strong LEGO Star Wars set, but as time has gone by, it’s been unseated by better sets from the theme.

7.) The Child (Grogu Statue)

71AqC2pFstL. AC SL1500

The LEGO Star Wars “Statue” sets have been popular with adult builders and kids alike. It offers a great way to get a quality set without worry of how/where you’ll display it. Case in point: The Child statue was a great way for fans to get a near-lifesized Grogu while experiencing the fun of building a large LEGO set.

6.) Imperial Armored Marauder

Everyone loves army builder sets, which of course refers to any set jam packed with soldiers, troopers, or other figures that would help fill the ranks of your LEGO minifigure armies. This set, based off of The Mandalorian season 2, is one of the few Mandalorian sets to NOT include the titular character. Still, it offers a solid build, two exclusive minifigures, and a memorable vehicle from the series. What’s not to love?

5.) Imperial Light Cruiser

I suspect that readers may view the placement of this set on the list as controversial, but allow me to explain… bigger does not always mean better! Coming in at $159.99, this is the most expensive Mandalorian set to date, not to mention, one of the most expensive minifigure scale LEGO Star Wars sets of 2021. The set includes several repeat characters like The Mandalorian, Cara Dune, and Grogu, and also comes with new minifigures like Moff Gideon, a Dark Trooper, and Fennec Shand.

A big appeal of this set is its size (which is AWESOME!) and its minifigures, which I suspect won’t be exclusive for long. Rumor has it that we’re getting a Dark Trooper battle pack in 2022, and Fennec Shand will most definitely be included in a Book of Boba Fett LEGO set someday given her co-star status on the upcoming show. With that in mind, that means that nearly every minifigure in this set would be a repeated figure, which drives down the “wow” factor of the set. It’s still an awesome set (and one I highly recommend) but do be aware that it may not retain its gigantic supremacy in the long run.

4.) Mandalorian Battle Pack

LEGO Star Wars battle packs are sets in the $15 range that serve as army builders. Put another way, they’re small, relatively inexpensive sets that include around 4 minifigures of the same ilk, allowing you to bolster your army of Stormtroopers, Clone Troopers, or in the case of this set, Mandalorians. This is a set that I think will always be sought after, given the popularity of mandalorians and the wealth of unique pieces that come on the minifigures in this set. I can’t give investing advice, but I do have a few of these tucked away in mint condition with plans to retire on them someday.

3.) The Armorer’s Mandalorian Forge

75319 alt1

Three great minifigures, two of which are exclusive, and a plethora of cool pieces and unique architecture packed into a $30 set. Does that sound like a good time or what?

2.) Boba Fett’s Starship

This set caused controversy as soon as it was revealed due to it being the first Star Wars product with the rebranded name of Boba Fett’s iconic ship, the Slave 1. An entire article could be written on that debacle, but the set itself has a lot of merit and offers some great play features at a somewhat reasonable price. Not counting the Slave 1 that came in the UCS Betrayal at Cloud City set, this is the smallest minifigure scale Slave 1 in recent memory. It continues the trend that started earlier this year from LEGO, where they’re offering smaller versions of iconic Star Wars ships at a somewhat cheaper price. Personally, I hope this trend dies soon because I love big, detailed builds—even if they cost more. Still, this set looks great, doesn’t take up much shelf space, and who doesn’t love the exclusive Boba Fett that comes with it?

1.) The Razor Crest

This list was so fun to put together, but now it’s your turn! Hit me up on IG and let me know what you thought of the list and whether you agree or disagree. The beautiful thing about LEGO and ranked lists is that they’re both meant to be taken apart and rearranged!
