Cons: There's not much to learn about programming or robots.

Bottom Line: While kids will be highly engaged, it leans a bit too much on the puzzle-solving over the robotics, engineering, and coding one would expect in a Mindstorms title.

How Can I Teach with This Tool?

Teachers can use Fix the Factory to whet the appetite of kids interested in building and programming robots. The professional package will lure in players. And the easy intro levels will hook kids with the idea that they, too, can program 'bots. After Fix the Factory, creative students could move on to visual programming tools like Scratch or Hopscotch. Lego Mindstorms Fix the Factory is a logic puzzle game based on the popular Lego Mindstorms physical robotics kits. By dragging and dropping simple commands onto the screen, players program a small Mindstorms robot as it navigates a futuristic factory and replaces batteries. Sequences of commands -- forward, turn left and right, pick up and put down, and more -- send the little 'bot on its mission. Challenges such as electric fences, conveyor belts, and rotating platforms challenge players to think through the right string of commands to direct their robot toward its goal. While the game scores players for speed and accuracy, the infinite redos allow players to solve the puzzles in as many steps as necessary.

Is It Good for Learning?

Lego's Mindstorms robot-building kits have long been a mainstay in robotics classrooms, so Fix the Factory promises some serious robot programming challenges. Despite a polished package, it actually presents a fairly straightforward puzzle game. Sequencing commands to get the robot to performs tasks provides a solid introduction to linear programming concepts, but the simplified set of commands and challenging puzzle levels doesn't leave much room for exploration or learning of more complex concepts. In the end, Fix the Factory is an amusing game but stops just short of tackling concepts teachers would prefer were addressed.

For those unfamiliar with LEGO MINDSTORMS, they're basically a unique brand of LEGO designed to help teach programming and robotics. Pretty funky, right? Well LEGO MINDSTORMS Fix the Factory is a sort of video game rendition of the same idea, only without the need to build anything.

The power is out at the NOGO factory and EV3RSTORM (I know, ugh) is the bot for the job. Players must guide him through 24 levels filled with switches, batteries, conveyor belts, and so on, but the catch is that he'll only do what he's programmed to do. So rather than using a virtual stick and action buttons, players will have to plan out their moves ahead of time and make sure they're moving, turning, and whatnot when they need to. This is made even more complicated with the inclusion of the conveyor belts, which move of their own accord once per action/turn.

Fix the Factory may not be the first robot-programming game I've played, but it's probably the prettiest. It's hard to tell from the screen shots but everything is actually in 3D, and EV3RSTORM's (seriously, ugh) animations are incredibly smooth. The puzzles are also well designed, although they'll probably be a bit easy for older gamers. But each new element is introduced well, and there's just enough time to get used to a new obstacle before another one is thrown into the mix.

And yet, there's so much that Fix the Factory gets wrong. Well, it doesn't so much get anything wrong as it just doesn't get things right. For example, each level has four stars that players can earn: Attempts, Errors, Moves, and Time. With the exception of Attempts and Errors, there's no way to know what the goal is until the level is complete. So while I may have to complete a stage without using more than 4 moves and in less than 40 seconds, none of that is indicated in-game. Even more troublesome is the fact that once the level is completed there's still no indication of what the target move count is. The interface itself is also problematic as the program tiles can be placed anywhere in the window and slide around automatically when one is dragged into place; which means it's incredibly easy to accidentally place a command in the wrong spot. And this, of course, makes trying to finish quickly a lot tougher than it should be.

LEGO MINDSTORMS Fix the Factory looks great and can be entertaining, but there are a surprising number of basic gameplay functions that have been left out. It's playable, certainly, but it could stand to be a lot more user-friendly.

Нажимаем на кнопку «Сохранить файл» и начнется загрузка установочного файла на выбранное устройство. После того, как файл загрузился, осталось только произвести установку.

Как установить ПО EV3

Теперь, когда установочный файл полностью загружен на ваше устройство, можно приступить к установке. Для этого дважды нажимаем левой кнопкой мыши на установочный файл. Начинается извлечение файлов, необходимых для установки ПО.

Затем необходимо выбрать путь установки для программного обеспечения MINDSTORMS. Выбираю путь, указанный по умолчанию.

В следующем окне нужно выбрать ПО для ученика или для учителя. Я выбираю вариант для учителя так как там больше возможностей и информации. Но если устраивает более облегченный вариант, то можно выбрать ПО для ученика.

Нажимаем на кнопку далее и появляется новое окно с лицензионным соглашением. Подтвердив соглашение опять нужно нажать кнопку «далее». Начинается установка и по индикаторам можно проследить ход ее выполнения.

После того, как установка закончена нажимаем на кнопку «завершить». На рабочем столе появляется ярлык LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3.
