В землях под названием Нинжаго жили-были не очень умелый кузнец Кай и его сестра Ния. Однажды в мастерскую к брату и сестре заглянул странный старик, а вслед за ним появились страшные вооруженные до зубов скелеты, ищущие какую-то карту. Оказалось, что старик – мудрый мастер древнего боевого искусства кружитсу, сенсей Ву. Он собирает команду ниндзя для борьбы с темным лордом Гармадоном, коварным и гордым магом, пожелавший когда-то всемирного господства и за свою дерзость заточенного в Ад. Но Гармадон придумал, как вырваться из преисподней: он нанял тех самых мертвецов-налетчиков для поиска артефактов, четырех видов оружия, которые могут дать такую силу, что позволит злодею вырваться из-под земли и стать правителем мира. Давным-давно Первый великий мастером кружитсу создал четыре вида оружия, используя четыре стихии. Меч он создал из огня, косу из силы землетрясений, нунчаки из молнии и сюрикены из кусков льда. Но оружие было настолько сильным, что его пришлось спрятать в разных местах, чтобы злой Гармадон не смог захватить его. Но теперь, когда Гармадон вышел из преисподней и захватил в плен Нию, сестру воина Кая, надо готовиться к схватке. И в первую очередь Кай должен стать настоящим ниндзя. Необходимо пройти путь ниндзя.
Мастер Сенсэй ведет корабль с воинами среди льдов к пещере, где спрятаны золотые сюрикены. Сюда они прибыли первыми, но надо еще удрать от охраняющего сюрикены дракона. Есть! Следующий – меч огня. Его раздобудет Кай в пещере, где Гармадон прячет его сестру Нию. Однако Гармадон все же обхитрил бесстрашных воинов и завладел тремя видами оружия. Чтобы ему не достался еще и золотой меч, мастер Сенсэй жертвует собой и бросается вместе с мечом в преисподнюю. Неужели и воинам придется идти туда же? Ведь Гармадон уже направил своих скелетов именно туда.
Мастер Сенсэй с золотым мечом уже в преисподней. Но как смертным попасть туда? Если нельзя, но очень надо, то придется оседлать дракона! Тем более дракон станет послушным, как только узнает о том, что летит к золотому мечу. Сейсэй, младший брат Гармадона, проиграл свою битву – все четыре вида оружия соединились. Образовавшаяся в результате этого воронка между временем и пространством помогла Гармадону покинуть преисподнюю. Но это еще не значит, что он захватит весь мир, как ему того хочется. Само золотое оружие осталось у воинов-ниндзя, а они смогут защитить свой мир.

Задолго до того, как на Земле появилась разумная жизнь, был рожден первый мастер Кружитцу, который обладал невероятной силой. Чтобы люди не добрались до этой силы и не смогли разрушить с ее помощью мир, Кружитцу разделил ее на четыре могущественных артефакта: Косы Землетрясений, Нунчаки Молнии, Сюрикены Льда, и Меча Огня. Мощь оружия была настолько сильной, что никому не под силу было держать все четыре артефакта сразу. А тот, кому это все-таки удастся по древнему пророчеству будет управлять вселенной.
У великого мастера была два любимых сына: старший – амбициозный, властный Гермадон и младший – спокойный, рассудительный Сансэй Ву. Когда мастер Кружитцу умирал, его сыновья поклялись охранять артефакты и не дать им попасть в неправильные руки.
Однако спустя некоторое время Гермадон сильно изменился. Он становился все более эгоистичным и жестоким, хотел заполучить себе все больше и больше власти. В определенный момент, он решил похитить четыре силы Кружитцу, и между ним и Сансэем разразился смертельный бой. В результате него младший брат победил старшего и навеки сослал его в преисподнюю.
В мире снова воцарилось спокойствие, но Сансэй Ву знал, что его брат не остановится: он будет искать артефакты даже из преисподней. Чтобы он не смог для них добраться, герой спрятал их в разных концах света и стал искать самураев, которые готовы были бы их охранять.
В это время же время Гармадон снова стал искать пути возвращения на землю. Он заключил договор с безжалостным колдуном Самукаем и его непобедимой армией скелетов. Гармадон пообещал им все золота мира и власть над всей землей, если они смогут достать ему четыре артефакта Кружитцу.
Сансэй Ву узнал о том, что его брат сговорился с могущественным злым колдуном и понял, что нужно действовать. Четыре молодых ниндзя, которые уже на протяжении полугода проходили у него подготовку, отправились в путь, чтобы первыми собрать четыре силы Кружитцу. Первой их целью стали Пещеры Отчаяния, где они должны были найти и заполучить Косы Землетрясений.
