Lego power miners rock monsters

Обновлено: 25.04.2024

Taking an inspiration from the 1999 Rock Raiders theme, LEGO Power Miners was an original theme with a run from January 2009 to 2010. The theme consisted of two waves connected together story-wise. The story revolved around a group of scientists who were sent to explore what exactly had been causing the series of massive earthquakes all around the globe, destroying several cities. The scientists dug deep under the surface into the Earth’s crust and found out the source of the earthquakes. They discovered that it was caused by Rock Monsters eating the power crystals. When they ate the crystal, it released so much energy that it caused the Earth to shake.

The scientists decided to collect all the crystals, so they could not be eaten by the monsters anymore. During this procedure, they ran into the Crystal King, the leader of all the Rock Monsters. When trying to fight him, they accidentally dug into a cave floor, which caused them to fall into the Earth’s inner core. There they had to face another type of monsters, this time the Lava Monsters, who ate the lava crystals instead of the power ones. It is uncertain how the story ends, because the theme was discontinued after this wave.

LEGO Power Miners Characters

The science team consisted of 4 main members. Doc., the leader of the whole operation, Rex the engineer, Duke the mining expert and Brains the main scientist. They were accompanied by other, not-so-important guys. Brains has also appeared in Atlantis line.

There were two types of the Rock Monsters as well as their King. There were five of the small ones: Boulderax the green one, Meltrox the red one, Glaciator the blue one, Sulfurix the neon one and Firox the orange one. Then there were two larger ones, the throwing monsters, as they were called by the scientists: Geolix, the neon one and Tremorox, the red one. And finally, the Crystal King, a brick-built figure with only his head being a special mold. He had his own set, which we will talk about that later on.

As for the Lava Monsters, there were three small ones: Firax the orange one, Combustix the yellow one and Inferox the red one, as well as one throwing monster, the large Eruptorr. The throwing monsters truly were throwing ones. One of their hands was a catapult operated by a small lever. It was used to catapult the smaller monsters.

Wave one

The first wave of LEGO Power Miners came out in January 2009 and was enriched by a bigger summer wave the same year. All the sets “took place” in the Earth’s crust. The scientist wore a blue and white worker-like suits and the colour scheme for the vehicles was mostly lime green and orange.

Winter

8956 Stone Chopper

The smallest set of the whole wave, it featured only a small mining bike and two minifigures: Duke and the red Lava monster Meltrox. It included 31 pieces and retailed for 6 bucks back then.

8957: Mine Mech

lego power miners mine mech

Being slightly bigger than the previous set, it included 67 pieces and costed 8 bucks. The build was a small mining robot with one crab-like arm and a second one with a rotating mining gear. It came with two minifigures: Brains and Boulderax, the green monster.

8958: Granite Grinder

Next set featured a small tracked vehicle with mining forks. It had a little function, when you were driving the Grinder, it made the forks move back and forward evoking actual mining or drilling. It featured two minifigures: Duke and the blue monster Glaciator and included 94 pieces retailing for 10 dollars.

8959: Claw Digger

lego power miners claw digger

With a price of 20 dollars, the Claw Digger was a middle sized set. It was a four-wheeled vehicle with two giant mining claws. There was little playability, you could dig with the claws using a little button on the side. It included 197 pieces and two minifigures: Rex and Sulfurix, the neon monster.

8960: Thunder Driller

Thunder driller was a bulky four-wheeled vehicle with a massive drill in the front of the vehicle. The drill rotated when you drove the vehicle. It included 235 pieces, retailed for 30 dollars and for the included three minifigures for the first time: Doc., Duke and the orange monster Firefox.

8961: Crystal Sweeper

lego power miners crystal sweeper

Being by far the largest set of the January LEGO Power Miners wave with a price tag of 60 dollars, the Crystal sweeper functioned as a sort of mobile center for the scientists in the first half of the 2009 wave. It was a large tracked vehicle with a command center in the front, together with a crystal collector ( that one was a play feature, when you drove the vehicle it was rotating and collecting the crystals on the ground ) and a little mining platform in the back right corner of the vehicle. The monsters were equipped with a double catapult that they could use to shoot themselves at the Sweeper. This set included 474 pieces and four minifigures: Brains, Duke and two Rock Monsters, red Meltrox and blue Glaciator.

8707: Boulder Blaster

Although being a part of the first wave, it stood out of the numerical order, that is due to it being a limited edition. There was a bulldozer-like vehicle with a dynamite throwing function. The set consisted of 293 pieces and came with two minifigures: Rex and the blue monster Glaciator. It retailed for a strange price of 27 dollars. It was considered a Toys”R”Us exclusive in the US, but it was more widely available in Europe.

Summer

8962: Crystal King

lego power miners crystal king

The smallest set of the summer wave with price tag of 20 dollars, it featured a large brick-built figure of the Crystal king with a molded head and a giant hand drill for the miners. It included 168 pieces and two minifigures to fight with the Crystal King: Duke and Rex.

8963: Rock Wrecker

The Rock Wrecker was the first set numerical-wise that included a throwing monster, with the inclusion of the neon one called Geolix. It was a decent sized vehicle covered with several drilling wheels and equipped with a net thrower used to capture the monsters. With Geolix already mentioned, it included only one other minifigure, Rex. It included 225 pieces and retailed for 35 dollars.

8964: Titanium Command Rig

lego power miners command rig

With a price tag of 100 dollars and its massive build, it was by far the largest LEGO Power Miners set to be ever produced. It was a giant eight-wheeled command center equipped with a giant convertible mining tower, a command bridge and even a small prison cage for the Rock Monsters. It was built from 706 pieces and included 5 mini figures: Doc., Brains, Duke, the blue Rock Monster Glaciator and Red throwing monster Tremorox.

8708: Cave Crusher

Another set out of the numerical order due to it being a special edition, Target exclusive in the US, it was a long six-wheeled vehicle with two mining wheels in the front and a flexible joint in the middle. It included three minifigures: Duke, Rex and the red throwing monster Tremorox. It retailed for 50 dollars.

8709: Underground mining station

lego power miners mining station

Last set of the wave numerical-wise, it was the only “building” in the first wave. It consisted of two towers connected via cableway and a small rock and crystal collecting vehicle also came with the set. Four minifigures were included: Duke (two versions of him), Rex and the neon throwing monster Geolix. It consisted of 637 pieces and retailed for 80 dollars.

Wave two

The second wave of LEGO Power Miners took place in the Earth’s inner core. Because of that, the miners were equipped with updated suits capable of sustaining the immense heat of the core and the lava. The suits were metallic, covered the whole body and some parts of them even have a little bit of chroming on them. The monsters changed their rocky part colour scheme to black from grey and their eyes were “glowing” now. The orange vehicle parts changed to blue, to resemble the water used to fight the lava monsters.

8188: Fire Blaster

The smallest set of this wave retailed for only 10 dollars. It was a small water shooting vehicle with two mini figures: Rex and Combustix, the yellow lava monster. It had only 62 pieces.

8189: Magma Mech

This set slightly resembled the last year’s Mine Mech, it changed the colour scheme and instead of the mining wheel it got a water shooting drill, sounds pretty weird, doesn’t it? It costed 20 dollars back then, had 183 pieces and came with two minifigures: Rex and the orange monster Firax.

8190: Claw Catcher

lego power miners claw catcher

As the name suggests, this vehicle used a pair of giant claws in the front to catch the monsters. It had 259 pieces and came with two minifigures: Brains and the red monster Inferox. Please note: The monster shown in the picture above is not accurate, but it is the official image.

8191: Lavatraz

With the name referring to the famous Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay, it was used as a prison for the large throwing monster. It also came with a small vehicle and included a fully operational Soda dispenser. It costed 50 dollars, was built from 381 pieces and included four minifigures: Doc., Duke, the large throwing monster Eruptorr and the small orange lava monster Firax.

Throughout the run of the series, LEGO has released several promotional polybags, keychains and even a watch. They’ve also sold 3 in 1 value packs.

lego power miners extras

In conclusion, Power Miners line was quite a good idea from LEGO and it was executed rather nicely. I own few of the smaller sets and they still hold up even after a decade. But it’s a pity that the line was canceled before it could finish it story. If you ever get chance to buy some Power Miners sets, definitely do so, it will be something new in your collection and maybe you will discover your new favourite theme!

Rockmonsters or Rock Monsters, were the main antagonists of the 2009 wave. When dipped in lava they become Lava Monsters. The Rock Monsters are the enemy of the Power Miners ( Duke , Brains , Rex , and Doc ). They appear in most of the Power Miners sets. They are made of different coloured rock and crystals. There are five different kinds of Rock Monster. The rock monsters are Meltrox , Boulderax , Glaciator , Sulfurix , and Firox . Meltroxes are red, and are apparently always angry. The yellow ones, Sulfurixes, are more intelligent and can melt tunnels through solid rock. Apparently, all of the Rock Monsters are afraid of the blue Glaciators. The Glaciators are shown to have ice powers (as seen in the trailer for the game Rock Rocket ). The green ones are Boulderaxes which are strong, slow, but not intelligent, and often attempt to destroy the Power Miners' vehicles. The orange ones are Firoxes which are extremely fast, sneaky, and love to play tricks.

According to the LEGO Magazine the Rock Monsters have been tunneling to the surface of the Earth so they can take over the LEGO World after mysterious earthquakes from deep in the Earth, and the Power Miners plan to stop them.

They are shown to have some primitive technology, like catapults. The Rock Monsters eat crystals, which give them power. If a rock monster eats a different coloured crystal to what it is it will burp and break wind, according to the video released by LEGO Club TV on YouTube. If they consume dynamite (and it goes off in the stomach) they will apparently solidify.

In Summer 2009, a new type of larger Rock Monster was released. They appear to be larger versions of the small monsters. The large version of Sulfurix is called Geolix, while the large version of Meltrox is Tremorox. As well as those, another rock monster called the Crystal King or Rock Rage was released in May 2009 as the biggest Rock Monster. He is now awoken from his sleep.

Power Miners is a theme released by LEGO in January of 2009, and was discontinued in 2010. It is similar to the Rock Raiders theme, and may be considered as that theme's spiritual successor. Short biographies for the crew, as well as the complete assortment of monsters—including the Crystal King—could be found on the Power Miners sub-site during the theme's run. These pages have since been discontinued along with the theme.

Between 2009 and 2010, two generations of the theme were released. The first is the 2009 generation, in which the Power Miners are deep in the crust of the Earth. In this generation, they fight the Rock Monsters, including the deadly Throwing Monsters and the powerful Crystal King. The Miners use plastic molds of dynamite, rather than a 1-by-2 plate with a dynamite printing as seen in Rock Raiders and other preceding sets. The 2010 generation charts that the Power Miners have drilled into the volcanic recesses of the Earth's core. The team faces the Lava Monsters, including Eruptorr, the king of the Lava Monsters. Instead of fighting the Lava Monsters with Dynamite—in 75% of the sets, the miners do not—they use water cannons.

The Power Miners work their way through the underground.

The Power Miners ride out.

The theme is set in underground caverns—like the Rock Raiders theme—and the basic story involves a group of mining specialists called Power Miners. The team is sent underground to investigate what is causing a series of severe "earthquakes" responsible for the devastation of several cities on Earth's surface. While there, the Power Miners discover the Energy Crystals and the Rock Monsters. The team decide to attempt to collect and mine the crystals in order to stop the monsters from consuming them and causing more of the "rumblings" on the surface. The Power Miners are dressed in blue and gray clothing, and their vehicles are green and orange in a fashion similar to that of real-world mining equipment; this is a fundamental difference between this theme and Rock Raiders, which is more futuristic.

An advertisement for the theme.

All of the theme's sets include at least one of the Power Miners and one of their vehicles, as well as one or more Rock Monsters, except 8962 Crystal King, which only contains the Crystal King himself and two of the miners with a small, hand-held drilling unit. As an exception, the two promotional sets, 8907 Rock Hacker and 8908 Monster Launcher, do not include either a miner—in the case of 8908—or a Rock Monster (in the case of 8907).

A Power Miners online game called "Rock Rocket" was released on November 28th of 2008.

Power Miners has introduced many new parts. Some of these are drills, special spiked wheels, Lava and Rock Monsters, and Dynamite that is three-dimensional as opposed to the more traditional 2-by-1 plate. This piece has also been used in Space Police III, Toy Story, and Agents 2.0.

The theme reprises several elements that were already present in the Rock Raiders theme ten years earlier, such as the occurrence of Rock Monsters and Energy Crystals. However, unlike in its predecessor, the Rock Monsters play a bigger role and are included in nearly every set. Additionally, each character—with the inclusion of the Rock Monsters—is named. Power Miners also implemented several features that only appeared in the planning stage of Rock Raiders, such as the concept of a mobile base and a common uniform for the miner minifigures.

The Titanium Command Rig.

Power Miners

2009
The eponymous Power Miners are a group of mining specialists who have a large variety of mining vehicles and equipment at their disposal, such as piloted bipedal robots and tracked vehicles. Most of the vehicles are equipped with drills and include elaborate gear mechanisms. The Power Miners have a large base—8709 Underground Mining Station—and also a mobile drilling rig—8964 Titanium Command Rig—which acts as a portable secondary base.

In order to investigate the cause of several mysterious rumblings on the surface, the Power Miners were sent underground by the government, where they encountered the Rock Monsters and enigmatic energy crystals. The profile for Doc on the Power Miners' website in 2009 mentioned a "Portal", suggesting that there is a large hole leading into the underground.

2010
In the 2010 theme, the miners travel farther underground. They don new silver clothing and armour to protect themselves from the heat. They encounter Lava Monsters, and are equipped with mining vehicles with water cannons to fight the Lava Monsters. One of their lower bases is Lavatraz, for the detainment and containment of errant Lava Monsters.

Minifigures

Monsters

Rock Monsters (2009)

Rock Monsters are the antagonists of the Power Miners and are included in almost every set. There are five different kinds of Rock Monsters—red, green, blue, yellow, and orange—that have been named. The first wave of sets contained only small versions of the monsters - Boulderaxes are strong, slow, and dumb; Firoxes are sneaky and love to mess with the Power Miners' vehicles; Glaciators are mean and very ill-tempered; Sulfurixes can melt through solid rock to make their own tunnels; and Meltroxes are very temperamental and destructive.

The second 2009 wave introduced the Crystal King, and two larger versions of the smaller Monsters, Tremorox and Geolix. Both can throw the smaller Monsters, along with rocks. These latter two are larger iterations of Meltrox and Sulfurix, respectively.

The Rock Monsters lack any vehicles or high technology. Their only equipment comprises of small catapults included in 8961 Crystal Sweeper and the Monster Launcher.

Rather than being a serious threat, the Rock Monsters are portrayed as childish hoodlums in the videos on the LEGO website and they have silly personalities and a gluttonous nature.

The larger Rock Monsters are more devious. Instead of being mischievous tricksters, they are sadists and bullies, throwing rocks and smaller Rock Monsters at the Power Miners and their equipment.

In 2010, a new type of monster was introduced - the Lava Monster. They live deeper underground than the Rock Monsters and they must be fought with water instead of fire, due to their heat-based nature.

These Lava Monsters also have larger versions, like the Rock Monsters.

When Power Miners was first released, a Power Miners movie was also released to promote the theme. These movies are no longer available, as the site has since moved off-line.

Games

  • Rock Rocket: In this game, the player controls a Rock Monster, and the Monster has to eat as many crystals as they can before they run out of power.
  • Cave Convoy: In this game, the player must guide several Power Miner vehicles safely through the caverns.
  • Lava Showdown: In this game, the player takes the role of a Power Miner in the Earth's core. The objective is to capture Lava Monsters and escape through caverns of lava. The player has three lives; if the player runs out of lives, the game is over and must be restarted.
  • Tunnel 13: Tunnel 13 was a game that was canceled while it was still being developed. The reason is why it was cancelled is unknown, however, Tunnel 13 was a large game. It may of been being developed to promote Power Miners, and then canceled because of a decision by LEGO to no longer promote the theme much further.
