Lego racers 2 cars

Обновлено: 28.04.2024

Denmark is famous throughout the world for two things - the Danish Pastry and LEGO. Sadly nobody has yet found a way to combine computers with the ultimate in sugar-glazed confectionery, but the gaudy little plastic building blocks have spawned a string of games over the years.

LEGO On Mars

The latest entry is LEGO Racers 2 which, as the title suggests, features LEGO guys tearing around a series of fanciful tracks in a range of bizarre looking vehicles. Indeed, if the preset vehicles on offer aren't oddball enough for you, there is a construction kit allowing you to design your own, building it up brick by brick from one of the standard chassis. It's not entirely obvious what effect (if any) the design of a vehicle has on its handling, but it's a nice touch anyway. The only disappointment is that there is no obvious way to remove a brick once you have placed it on your vehicle, so if you make a mistake you're stuck with it.

As you would expect from LEGO, the options are virtually endless. The game includes five worlds to explore, each based on one of the new fangled LEGO theme kits, and each with its own selection of unique bricks, preset vehicles and chassis to play around with. There are post vans and police cars in Sandy Bay, oldsmobiles and half-tracks on Dino Island, land speeders on Mars and skidoos in the Arctic, all leading up to the wild vehicles and gravity defying tracks of Xalax.

One of the more .. eccentric characters in Adventure mode

Little Brick Adventure

When you first load the game though you only have access to Sandy Bay; the other four worlds must be unlocked in the game's Adventure mode by earning enough gold bricks. This can be done simply by winning the four main races you will find on each of the worlds, but there is also an exploration mode which allows you to drive around the world freely.

Exploring the world allows you to chat with the people who live there to get clues which can lead you to hidden treasure or bonus games. These involve collecting a number of objects scattered around the world, and beating them within the time limit can provide additional upgrades for your vehicle, giving you more grip, stronger shields or increased engine power. The middle three worlds also have bosses which you can race against to pick up further upgrades, which will be invaluable by the time you reach Xalax and must face off against Rocket Racer himself in the great dome. And while the first and last bosses you meet are just men in very fast cars, the other two are utterly bizarre and offer their own unique challenges.

It's all very entertaining, and the animations of the characters you speak to are surprisingly emotive and full-of-life considering that they are computer renderings of little chunks of plastic. The voice acting is also superb, with a string of high-pitched gobbledegook emerging from the characters as they talk to you and subtitles providing a translation in your chosen language. The only real downside to the Adventure mode is that I completed the whole thing in six hours, unlocking all of the tracks and more than half of the bonus games, and picking up 32 of the game's 35 gold bricks in the process.

Someone lets rip with a power-up

Run Forrest, Run

Luckily then there are plenty of other options to keep you busy once the main Adventure is over. For starters there is the inevitable Arcade mode, allowing you to race in a full field of eight cars on any of the game's 24 tracks that you have unlocked.

This is fairly amusing in its own right, although the AI racers don't always put up much of a fight. They seem to have problems getting themselves unstuck after becoming wedged between barriers or vanishing off the track, and even get lost occasionally in some of the maze-like courses. The AI hasn't really mastered the use of the power-ups which are included in the game either, and you can often see drivers firing these off seemingly at random, with chunky nuclear missiles and bouncing bombs whizzing past in all directions.

Power-ups are in plentiful supply though, and can make or break your race. Slamming a rocket into the rear fender of the vehicle in front can send it flying into the air thanks to the mushy physics, as well as removing some of its LEGO bricks courtesy of the fully destructible nature of the vehicles. In extreme cases entire cars can disintegrate in a cloud of particles and little primary coloured plastic bricks, leaving the poor driver running along on foot towards the pit lane. Absolutely priceless.

Racing through the jungle on Dino Island

The Phantom Racer

A Time Attack mode is also included, which pits you against yourself as you try to set a new lap record. Rather than simply telling you the time you need to beat though, LEGO Racers 2 actually renders a phantom car representing the current fastest lap. This races around the track with you, allowing you to see at a glance where you are gaining and losing time on any particular run.

Trying to shave off those extra few tenths of a second and to improve your consistency is surpisingly enjoyable, although as your car is permanently boosted in Time Attack mode you can't really extend the knowledge of the tracks you pick up here to the other modes, where you will be travelling somewhat slower. Still, it's a nice feature that helps give the game some much-needed longevity.

The tracks themselves provide plenty of variety, from the hill climbs, narrow streets and beaches of Sandy Bay to the wild loop-the-loops, force fields and vertigo-inducing mid-air turns of Xalax. There are spiral ramps to race your way up and down, dinosaurs to dodge, rivers to splash across, an ice-bound ship to navigate your way through and non-linear sections where the tracks open up into a maze of intertwining passages.

It's all a far cry from the mundane tracks of more realistic racing games, and although the physics and handling aren't as satisfying as in more adult-oriented games and you can complete many of the tracks without having to hit the brakes at all, the game can still be challenging in its own way. At the end of the day it's really aimed at kids, but there is enough here to keep older gamers entertained for a while too.

LEGO Racers - Rocket Racer's Opening

Rocket Racer's opening in LEGO Racers

Meet Rocket Racer – the greatest racing champion in all LEGOLAND®. But Rocket Racer has a problem. He’s such a brilliant racer that no-one can beat him and now he’s bored. So, to find a real challenge, Rocket has decided to hunt down the best Racers in the history of LEGOLAND and set up a truly awesome racing contest.

Rocket’s friend, Veronica Voltage, is a top scientist and mechanical genius. She has designed and built a fantastic LEGO® dimensional warp machine to send her and Rocket all around LEGOLAND. They have hunted high and low and even travelled through time to find the best LEGO Racers for the ultimate racing challenge.

Now, in a thrilling test of driving skills and nerve, you can take on these top LEGO Racers in a series of Circuit Races. And if you beat them all, you will get the chance to compete in a race to end all races and go head-to-head with Rocket Racer himself. The winner will be declared the Greatest LEGO Racer of All Time! Are you ready to be that LEGO Racer?

Rocket Racer is faced in the 7th and final circuit in LEGO Racers, on the track Rocket Racer Run. After the player bests him, he happily congratulates them and presents them with his car set to use and build custom cars with.

Lego Racers 2 Intro

The LEGO Racers 2 intro

After he was beaten in the first LEGO Racers game, Rocket Racer was heart-broken - he thought his racing days were over. Then, one day, while trudging sadly through Sandy Bay, he came across an advertisement for the planet Xalax, home of the race-crazy aliens, the Ramas. “Wow”, he said to himself, “a whole planet of racers – sounds like my kind of place!”

He found the intergalactic portal, and he so impressed the Ramas with his driving talents, he earned their respect and friendship. His skills improved, and his confidence returned – he even built a better car and picked out some cool new clothes! Now, Rocket Racer has issued a fresh challenge to the LEGO worlds – come to Xalax and race against him and his alien friends to become Galactic Racing Champion!

You live in Sandy Bay, and when you hear of the challenge, you decide to try and make it to the Championship. But there are four other local inhabitants who would like to go to Xalax to represent the town, so you’ll need to beat them first. Then, you must travel to three more LEGO worlds, to improve your skills and to win new parts for your car that together will help you beat Rocket Racer.

In LEGO Racers 2, Rocket Racer returns as the final boss, this time on the planet Xalax. Once beaten, he congratulates the player and awards them with the trophy for their new title as galactic racing champion, but tells them to look after it, saying he'll be back for it sooner or later.

LEGO Adventures! Magazine

LEGO Adventures! Magazine Issue 6 contains a comic based on the premise for LEGO Racers, where a bored Rocket Racer tells Veronica Voltage that he has beaten every good racer in LEGOLAND. To remedy this, Veronica uses her time machine to bring Basil the Batlord and Captain Redbeard from the past to race Rocket Racer. He beats them both and then challenges the reader to a race.

Drome Racers

Rocket in Drome Racers

Drome Racers features a character named Rocket, a retired racer who gives Max Axel (the player) tips, offers practice, and coordinates one-on-one challenges with other racers. While nothing in the game itself explicitly states this character is Rocket Racer, when asked if the characters were connected, the game's writer said:

Yep. Very much a nod to the earlier character. The original Lego Racers was before my time at ATD, but everyone was keen to include him.

In an early mockup of what character selection in the game may have looked like, Rocket is present, and an unused driver texture for him can be found in the game data. However, the game's writer had no recollection of plans to play as Rocket. [4] The artwork of Rocket in the character select mockup was never ultimately used elsewhere, but bears slightly more resemblance to the original design, with a wide smirk, while the in-game character model has a more neutral expression.

Minifigures

The Race Car Guy in Minifigures Series 18, while not explicitly referred to as Rocket Racer, is considered to be Rocket Racer's first appearance as a physical minifigure. Once again, his outfit has changed, though he still retains his logo, and his name is on his belt. This minifigure was further alluded to be Rocket Racer when mentioned in an interview with Austin William Carlson, a graphics/minifigure artist at LEGO responsible for creating several revamps of classic characters:

Which is more fun for you Austin: creating new graphics or redesigning ‘classic’ ones and giving them a fresh look?

Austin: It’s usually both for me, as long as they are original LEGO characters. There’s so many classic characters that I grew up with that I have been given a chance to give an updated look! Like Rocket Racer, Fright Knight, Johnny Thunder (he should have his original hat though), and some others I can’t currently talk about. I do love making original designs also, some of my current favorites are in the LEGO City Adventures TV show.

Notes

gave out Rocket Racer stickers for a period of time.
  • In LEGO Racers cutscenes, Rocket Racer's right arm is red and his left arm is blue. But in the player select, intro, tracks, main menu and when he gives you his car set, his right arm is blue and left arm is red.
  • Early concept art and renders for LEGO Racers depict Rocket Racer with brown hair and a lighter colored outfit. This early design was also used for a large brick-built version of him and his car displayed at E3 1999.
  • Rocket Racer's new outfit and car design in LEGO Racers 2 is similarly based on stunt performer Evel Knievel's motorcycle jumpsuit.

Действия

Продолжение одной из лучших игр по Lego.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy,

LEGO Racers 2 is the sequel to the first LEGO racing game entitled LEGO Racers, released for the PC, Playstation 2 and Game Boy Advance gaming systems in 2001.

General [ edit ]

In this game, the player has more freedom, as well as more characters to talk to. There are five large worlds, starting with the hometown, Sandy Bay. The player then moves along to Dino Island, Mars, Arctic, and finally Xalax, the racing planet. You advance by winning 4 races in Sandy Bay, and then collecting gold bricks to advance to the other realms to win their 5 races. There the player challenges Rocket Racer again in a large stadium. After Rocket Racer is defeated, he will happily hand over the title of the greatest racer in the galaxy. A character named Sparky assists the player and lets you explore the lands.

Opponents [ edit ]

The four racers from Sandy Bay are Workman Fred, Mike the Postman, Fireman Gavin, and P.C. Bobby. On Dino Island, Mars, and the Arctic, there is a set of opponents you race on the four main levels of each world: Johnny Thunder, Pippin Reed, Mr. Cunningham, Cassiopeia, Mac, Frankie Solido and Baron Rosso. On Xalax, the racers are Ramas Lightor, Warrior, Duster, Ghost, Freeze, Chill and Snake. There are also four Bosses, one for each world: Lord Sam Sinister (called Sam Sanister), Riegel, The Berg, and Rocket Racer.

Levels [ edit ]

There are five levels, or worlds, in LEGO Racers 2, each based on a particular theme. In addition to racing cars in the Racers product line, each theme is based on an actual series LEGO sets, and includes parts of those sets.

Upgrades [ edit ]

Upgrades for your car may be obtained by winning mini games. Each mini game is accessible by driving through a vortex while exploring the LEGO worlds. There are two mini games per world, one on an easy level and one on a difficult level.

There are three categories of upgrades available: Grip, which improves how well your car turns and how much your car slides; Power, which controls how fast your car goes and how much climbing power your car has; and Shield, which controls how much damage your car can take before disappearing.

Powerups [ edit ]

Powerups are various types of weapons that can be used while racing. You obtain a powerup by driving over a white, spinning, glowing LEGO brick. A counter appears that cycles through all of the powerups; the one it lands on is the one you get. You may press the "fire" button to stop the counter if you see one that you want. It takes a quick hand, however. Otherwise, the counter will automatically give you a bonus based on your position in the race. Persons in last place will receive the best powerups. Unlike LEGO Racers 1, there are no power-enhancing bricks for your powerup.

  • Weapons powerups make LEGO bricks fly off the receiver's cars. Lose all the bricks and you will be forced to continue on foot, in LEGO minifigure form. You have to walk to the nearest pit stop to get your car back.
  • The Stealth powerup makes your car invisible to other racers, and you may bump into other racers to obtain the powerup they have. Also, it prevents the Tracking Missile powerup from hitting you. It lasts for around eight seconds. Symbol: The gray ninja
  • The Drill powerup fires a drill missile in front of your car. The drill behaves like a torpedo, and explodes on impact, eliminating around 50% of the opponents bricks. You can also ride on the drill by holding down the fire button. You can also ride in water and lava. However, if you ride on it for too long, it will detonate, causing damage to your car. Symbol: A drill
  • The Disk powerup fires a flying disc in front of your car. The disc will bounce off any object it hits, except cars, in which case it explodes. You can get another powerup while this powerup is on. It is very powerful, like the drill it eliminates around half of the bricks on your opponents car, but is very hard to use. If you press the look back button you can fire the disc backwards; which can be useful if you are being chased by a Missile, as the Disk can destroy the Missile. Symbol: A disk with blades.
  • The Missile powerup fires a homing missile that you may lock on to any racer. The same with the disc, you can pick up another powerup when this one is on. Occasionally it will explode (by hitting something) before it reaches target. You can also select the target using next target & previous target buttons. It is easier to cause damage with than the drill or disc, but it does less damage - around a third of bricks. Symbol: A bloodhound
  • The Explosion powerup creates a bubble of expanding energy around your car. When the energy expands to a certain point, it explodes, harming every racer in the vicinity of the bubble except for you. You can charge the shot by holding down the fire button (note that if you keep charging and don't drop it as follows, it WILL damage your own vehicle.) If the fire button is held and then released, the bubble will fall behind the car and explode as described above. If a car runs into a dropped bubble, it will suffer more damage than normal. Damage is variable with this powerup, dependent on how deep you drive into the bubble. Symbol: A storm cloud
  • The Whirlwind powerup creates a stationary whirlwind that causes cars to veer away from it. If you hold down the fire button the whirlwind stays attached to your car. If you keep it attached, you will suffer minor damage. You won't be able to pick up any powerups while this is on. It lasts for around eight seconds. Symbol: A twister
  • The Destructabrick powerup creates a force that first turns the screen yellow for half a second, and then takes 3 layers of bricks off every single car (except for yours) for six seconds. It is very rare, and is the most powerful powerup in the game. Symbol: Flying LEGO bricks
  • Note: Missile and Destructabrick cannot be used in Battle mode.

Characters [ edit ]

Other [ edit ]

LEGO Racers 2 also includes "cars" that aren't specifically cars such as trucks, cars with tank-like treads, hover cars, and snow vehicles with skis, as well as a "sail" snow vehicle that you cannot build with the displayed pieces. LEGO Racers 2 also has, like in the original, a car and characters designer. LEGO Racers 2 has more bricks but fewer characters to make and edit. However, while in theory this means that more individual racer possibilities exist, the number of "widely used" parts is much lower, and only a few possibilities that exist are commonly used. This also follows over to cars. Additionally, you cannot change your player at any time during adventure (story) mode, further limiting options. You can change your car, however it can only be changed for each of the worlds once.

Notes [ edit ]

  • In LEGO Racers 2 the player has more freedom than in the first game. In LEGO Racers you are bound to the track, however in LEGO Racers 2 you are able to go off the track and explore the island or world while you are racing.
  • In the original LEGO Racers, you usually race against five opponents. In LEGO Racers 2, you are racing against seven opponents.
  • Bosses in LEGO Racers 2 are not always a normal character with a kart, like in LEGO Racers. As example, the boss of the Arctic world is "The Berg", who you could see as the Abominable Snowman, who races on foot.
  • LEGO Racers 2 features a comeback from several characters featured in LEGO Racers, like Johnny Thunder, Baron Von Barron (Sam Sinister in LEGO Racers 2) and of course Rocket Racer.

Lego Racers 2
