Chrome Crusher [ edit ]

This mechanical monstrosity is vital to the success of most missions. It carries everything except a cargo hold and a scanner (but if you have a geologist at the wheel, it's almost as good). It can drill through any walls in less than a second and even has a laser turret mounted on the top. The only downside to this vehicle is it's poor speed. Even with an engine upgrade, it still travels quite slowly.

  • Training - Driver
  • Dependency - Tool Store (UP1) + Teleport Pad (UP1) + Power Station (UP1) + Support Station (UP2) + Super Teleport (UP1)
  • Power - 5 ECs
  • Upgrades - Engine: 10 Ore. Drill: 15 Ore.

Cargo Carrier [ edit ]

This ferry can pick up vehicles and transport them across expanses of water.

Kabaya Foods Corporation .

Lego Media.

Rock Raiders.

Lego Power Miners.
Rock Raider.
Rock Raider.

Rock Raiders was a theme introduced in 1999 and discontinued in 2000. It is based on space travellers/miners trapped on an alien planet. It consists of eight main sets, four promotional sets and three Minifigure-based sets, and also a video game based on the theme for both Windows and the PlayStation.

Details

The eponymous Rock Raiders were a team of miners that searched for energy crystals in the underground. They had several specialized mining and transport vehicles at their disposal, and were based at various locations around Planet U, where they processed rocks to extract the powerful Energy Crystals with their refinery stations. During their excavations, they would occasionally encounter Rock Monsters (included in two different sets), Slimy Slugs, and numerous other monsters, who would often attack the Rock Raiders or their bases, usually for Energy Crystals (although some, like Spiders and Scorpions, were merely aggressive towards the Raiders).

A 1999 UK catalog page.

This was the third theme (the first was Time Cruisers and the second was Adventurers Egypt) whose Minifigures were individual characters with names.

The setting had several elements that were reprized, and also somewhat further developed, in the Power Miners theme ten years later, such as the occurrence of Rock Monsters and collection of crystals. Here, the Rock Monsters had just minor appearances and were not named characters, merely bearing the name "Rock Monster".

A 2000 USA catalog page.

Rock Raiders introduced also several new pieces, such as the chrome drill, blade saw, hollow boulders and an electric light-producing cannon piece that served as a laser cutter.

The sets of the first wave, which were also the only ones of the theme that appeared in the catalogs, all included Rock Raiders comics. The models and minifigures of the respective set the comic was included in played a major role in the story.

Story

The LMS Explorer.

Another 2000 USA catalog page.

The Rock Raiders were travelling on their spaceship, the LMS Explorer, mapping the whole Galaxy. They had just finished their journey and were headed home, when they drifted into an asteroid field. The ship was badly damaged and, to make matters worse, a wormhole caught the ship in its gravitational pull. The fuel supply was drained in the failed attempt to escape, and the LMS Explorer was flung into a distant Galaxy. They found themselves around Planet U, a planet rich in mysterious Power Crystals. They sent down Rock Raiders to mine it, and found vast amounts of Energy Crystals to power and repair the LMS Explorer, but they also encountered many alien creatures. The team would endure numerous hardships to obtain the Crystals, but they eventually triumphed, and successfully gathered enough Crystals to return home.

The three books further expand on this story, as well as the missions from the games.

Creatures

Rock Monsters are subterranean beings made entirely of rock with glowing red eyes. They feast on the energy crystals used to power Rock Raiders vehicles and are not aggressive unless their crystals are stolen. They are the most common enemy. The best way to kill them is with a Laser Beam.

They appeared in LEGO Island 2 on Adventurer's Island, where they would throw rocks at you in the biplane game. Several more were later seen orbiting OGEL Island.

Rock Monsters are theorized by Docs to be remnants of an ancient civilization. When the Rock Raiders first saw them, they assumed that they were statues built by that civilization. However, after seeing their activity, Docs came to believe that they may have devolved from an advanced civilization.

Ice Monsters are subterranean lifeforms composed of solid ice and have glowing blue eyes. They too feast on crystals and can be found in icy areas beneath Planet U. In the Rock Raiders game, they are more aggressive than Rock Monsters but not as strong. The best way to kill them is with a Laser Beam. Ice Monsters make few appearances in the NTSC PS1 game. Ice Monsters do not appear in any of the sets - the closest thing is an unpainted Rock Monster prototype. The Rock Raiders have encountered fights between Ice Monsters and Lava Monsters, however; sometimes Rock, Ice, and Lava monsters work together.

Lava Monsters are subterranean creatures formed from molten lava and sport glowing yellow eyes. They can be found in the underground molten lava caverns on Planet U. In the Rock Raiders game, they cannot be killed instantly, and the best way to dispatch them is with a Freezer Beam. Lava Monsters do not appear in the NTSC version of the PS1 game.

Slimy Slugs are very large slugs, often smaller than all monsters (although some rather large Slugs have been found). They are large and are green with faint spots. Slimy Slugs eat crystals. Slimy Slugs can also be found on Ogel Island in LEGO Island 2, and push the player back when the player runs into them. In the Rock Raiders PC game, Slimy Slugs cannot be destroyed, and will drain energy crystals from existing buildings. The best weapon to use on them is a Pusher Beam.

Bats appear in the Windows video game. They scare Rock Raiders, and cause them to drop whatever they may happen to be carrying.

Spiders appear in the Windows video game. They randomly emerge when Rock Raiders are drilling. They cause the Rock Raiders in the area to slip and drop whatever they are carrying but are otherwise harmless.

Spiders appear in the Rock Raiders PS1 video game. Unlike the small variety, these are aggressive, and will attack Rock Raiders. They can also spin Large Webs that only the Loader Dozer or the Pusher Beam can clear. There are prototypes of them lying unused in the PC game's files.

Purple Scorpions are huge, about the size of Small Diggers. They will attack nearby Rock Raiders. They only appeared in the PS1 game. Three shots from a Pusher Beam will eradicate them.

Green Scorpions are very similar to Purple Scorpions, but they prefer to not attack directly; rather, they stand at a distance shooting plasma globules from their claws at the Rock Raiders. They only appeared in the PS1 game. Three shots from a Pusher Beam will do away with them.

A Rock Whale in-game.

These massive 6-legged creatures lumber through the underground passages of Planet U. Although they do not attack, they can do a lot of damage, albeit unintentionally. There are 2 types: a cracked-looking light-brown type that moves slowly and spends most of their time slumbering, and a smaller metallic-looking red type that can scuttle faster than most vehicles can move. They only appeared in the PlayStation game and the book High Adventure Deep Underground. The only way to remove slumbering Rock Whales is to use a Pusher Beam to move them into water, causing them to merge into the ground and form a bridge. The moving variety are too fast to use a Pusher Beam on.

Original Plans

The only known storyboard of the Rock Raiders theme

The Ultimate LEGO Book contained concept art for LEGO Rock Raiders on pages 30–31, showing how the theme developed over time. The original plans were vastly different

A piece of concept art showed:

  • Different outfit designs for the Rock Raiders, with goggles and scarves.
  • Mysterious aliens travelling with the Rock Raiders.
  • Rock Monsters were larger, and some had tails and acted more like animals.
  • The Chrome Crusher appears with two drills (similar to its upgraded form in the Rock Raiders PC Game) and no laser.
  • The Loader Dozer has a drill and a gun.
  • A scrapped flying rocket-like vehicle which somewhat resembles the Tunnel Scout.
  • A scrapped vehicle with robotic arms, a drill and laser turrets.
  • A Mobile Rock Raiders HQ, with Crystal and Ore Refineries and giant arms.
  • A Hover Scout with cargo capacity.

Other pictures in the book included:

  • Different Granite Grinder, much sleeker look.
  • Ice-themes Loader Dozer.
  • Ice Monsters in a set.
  • Flying transport truck.

Had the theme been more successful, these elements might have been reconsidered.

LEGO Rock Raiders is a video game based on the Rock Raiders theme. There are two versions of this game with the same name, on two different platforms.

Description

Stranded in orbit around an uncharted planet, the crew of the LMS Explorer is faced with the challenge of establishing a base camp beneath the planets surface.

Your mission is to take command of the Rock Raiders team and navigate the Rock Raiders' vehicles through 29 exciting missions. Explore underground caverns in 3 different types of terrain - Rock, Lava and Ice - in a quest to mine enough Energy Crystals to re-power the LMS Explorer and get the Rock Raiders back home safely.

Windows (PC)

The PC game is a real-time strategy similar to Dune II, and was the first video game for the Rock Raiders theme. The game opens with optional training missions and one "real" mission unlocked. The Chief explains the briefing of each mission. Most missions require the player to collect a certain amount of Energy Crystals. The required number of Energy Crystals during missions starts low, but gradually gets higher in later missions as a result of increased workload. Some missions require the player to locate fellow Rock Raiders that have been trapped in landslides, or to find certain pieces of equipment and bring them back to base.

One of the game's features is the Priority Menu. With this menu, players can set what order Rock Raiders carry out their tasks. For example, players can set whether Rock Raiders should collect Energy Crystals or LEGO Ore first.

At the end of each mission, Chief evaluates the player's work, examining various aspects of the mission. With all these taken into consideration, Chief gives a mission rating percentage.

There are twenty-five missions in total, with each of them taking place in either a rocky, volcanic or icy cavern environment. It is not necessary to complete every mission with 100%, or even complete all the missions, to complete the campaign.

Sony PlayStation

Unlike the PC game, the PlayStation game is an action and strategy game, in which the player controls a main character (i.e. Jet, Axle, Docs, Bandit or Sparks) instead of commanding a squad. Also, unlike the PC release, which is centered around constructing a base and mining, the PlayStation release centers around exploring the mission environment.

Most missions require the player to collect a certain amount of Energy Crystals, while some missions require the player to rescue Rock Raiders that have been trapped by landslides or other dangers. Some missions combine both of these objectives.

There are eighteen campaign missions and six multiplayer missions in the NTSC version. The PAL version includes eighteen different one-player and two-player missions, and three one-player bonus missions that are accessible after the campaign is completely finished with every mission completed to a Gold Medal standard (see below).

Rather than a percentage, at the end of each mission players receive either a Bronze Medal (minimum required objectives complete), a Silver Medal (most objectives complete), or a Gold Medal (all objectives complete). The criteria for these awards vary between the NTSC and PAL versions.

The player also has to remember the password (by keeping it as a record) to load the game's progress instead of just saving a game save file for it onto the computer's hard drive (or a PS1 memory card in this case) and loading it to continue the game.

There are various buildings in Rock Raiders to fulfill many different purposes. Some may be necessary, while some are just to increase efficiency of production.

This is a list of all the buildings in LEGO Rock Raiders. A building is implicitly assumed to require rock raiders being present, and a power path to be constructed next to.

Contents

General info [ edit ]

There are properties every building has:

  • Dependence: All buildings require a power path to be constructed, and Rock Raiders to be present. Other than that, all buildings other than the Tool Store require certain buildings to have been constructed and upgraded to a certain level before construction can even begin.
  • Materials: Most of the buildings require a certain number of ore and energy crystals to be constructed.
  • Upgrades: Most buildings can be upgraded. The maximum upgrade level and effect of an upgrade varies from building to building. A building always requires five ore to be upgraded one level. When not upgraded at all, a building is at "lv. 0".
  • Training: Some buildings allow Rock Raiders to train with them. This might depend on the upgrade level.
  • Power: Some buildings require power to perform all of their functions, and when they do so they reserve an energy crystals' worth of power out of the power network. Without power the building will serve no purpose and cannot train workers. The power can be manually turned off, so it can be arranged that only necessary buildings will receive power if there are not enough energy crystals in the network to supply all of the buildings.

Tool Store [ edit ]

  • Dependence: None
  • Materials: None
  • Upgrades
    1. Allows the construction of the Teleport Pad
    2. Can train Explosive Experts
  • Training: Explosive Expert (lv. 2)

The Tool Store is in many ways the most important building in the game, especially because every level will always start with at least one Tool Store. Rock Raiders can only acquire tools at a Tool Store, and it serves as the storage facility for ore and energy crystals. They can also be teleported down with this, and is in most cases the first way of teleportation. When dynamite or electric fences are needed, they came from this building. If upgraded twice, workers can train as an Explosive Expert, allowing them to use powerful dynamite to destroy hard rock which cannot be drilled with their tools.

Teleport Pad [ edit ]

  • Dependence: Tool Store (lv. 1)
  • Materials: 8 ore
  • Upgrades
    1. Allows construction of Power Station
  • Training: Pilot

The Teleport Pad is one of the central buildings involved with vehicles, and represents the next level of teleportation power above the Tool Store. If a Rock Raider is in queue to be teleported to the planet, but all the Tool Stores are busy, Teleport Pads are used instead, so it can help to speed up teleportations of large groups of workers at a time. This building's main use is to teleport small vehicles to the surface. It's other important function is to train workers as Pilots, so they can use flying vehicles.

Docks [ edit ]

  • Dependence: Tool Store (lv. 1), Teleport Pad (lv. 1)
  • Materials: 8 ore, 1 energy crystal
  • Upgrades: None
  • Training: Sailor

When it comes to water vehicles, the Docks is the center of it all. When water vehicles are teleported down, although a Teleport Pad or Super Teleport is used, the teleportation is instead directed here on the water. Sailors are trained here. It is the only building that requires being next to a square of water as well as a power path.

Power Station [ edit ]

  • Dependence: Tool Store (lv. 1), Teleport Pad (lv. 1)
  • Materials: 12 ore, 2 energy crystals
  • Upgrades
    1. Allows construction of Support Station, Geological Center, Upgrade Station, and Ore Refinery
  • Training: None

This is one of the most important buildings, as it supports all the other buildings. Its only function is to provide power to power path networks, using the power supplied by energy crystals. After this building is constructed, workers will bring energy crystals to this building to be assimilated into the power network, instead of the Tool Store for storage. When energy crystals are required as building materials, however, they are retrieved from the Tool Store as normal.

Support Station [ edit ]

  • Dependence: Tool Store (lv. 1), Teleport Pad (lv. 1), Power Station(lv. 1)
  • Materials: 15 ore, 3 energy crystals
  • Upgrades
    1. Allows construction of Super Teleport
    2. Allows construction of more advanced vehicles
  • Training: Driver

One of the gateway buildings, and also one of the central buildings related to vehicles. It serves many purposes, one of the most vital replenishing air consumed by workers. Workers will automatically eat sandwiches here when they are hungry, so they will always be in an efficient working state. Rock Raiders are trained as drivers here. This building allows the construction of the Hover Scout, Small Digger, and Small Transport Truck, and Rapid Rider (if a Docks is built). Building this also increases the amount of Rock Raiders that can be present on the map at the same time.

Upgrade Station [ edit ]

  • Dependence: Tool Store (UP1) + Teleport Pad (UP1) + Power Station (UP1)
  • Materials: 20 Ore, 3 Energy Crystals
  • Upgrades:
    1. Decreases amount of time it takes to upgrade a vehicle.
  • Training: Engineer

The upgrade station can be a very useful addition to your base, provided that you have a steady supply of ore. The upgrade station, obviously, upgrades your vehicles with a long, crane-like, arm. Several upgrades are available for the vehicles (although some cannot be upgraded.) Also, the upgrade station can train your rock raiders to be engineers, which can be handy if a vehicle is damaged by a landslide/monster of some kind.

Geological Center [ edit ]

  • Dependence: Tool Store (UP1) + Teleport Pad (UP1) + Power Station (UP1)
  • Materials: 15 Ore, 3 Energy Crystals
  • Upgrades:
    1. Increases range of scanner (Lv1)
    2. Increases range of scanner to maximum (Lv2)
  • Training: Geologist

The Geological Center, although not extremely useful, allows you to see walls behind the walls currently showing by hovering over them with your mouse. It is not vital to your base, but your rock raiders can be trained as geologists there, allowing them to use a similar ability on their own.

Ore Refinery [ edit ]

  • Dependence: Tool Store (UP1) + Teleport Pad (UP1) + Power Station (UP1)
  • Materials: 20 Ore, 3 Energy Crystals
  • Upgrades:
    1. Upgrades to take 4 Ore to create a Building Stud (Lv1)
    2. Upgrades to take 3 Ore to create a Building Stud (Lv2)
    3. Upgrades to take 2 Ore to create a Building Stud (Lv3)
  • Training: none

This building transforms pieces of Ore into Building Studs. Building Studs make construction easier, as it takes less Studs than Ore to build a structure. Ore is automatically taken here. Once these Studs are built, they are carried back to the Tool Store for storage.

Even though the upgrades reduce the amount of Ore required to make a Building Stud, Building Studs are still worth 5 pieces of Ore, thus allowing one to gain more Ore per piece.

Mining Laser [ edit ]

  • Dependence: Tool Store (UP1) + Teleport Pad (UP1) + Power Station (UP1) + Support Station (UP1)
  • Materials: 15 Ore, 1 Energy Crystal
  • Upgrades:
    1. Increases the number of shots it takes to deplete an Energy Crystal.
  • Training: none

Although the mining laser is inexpensive, the energy crystals used by its laser can add up, even with the upgrade purchased. The mining laser is not recommended, especially on levels without a recharge seam, and is surpassed by the small mobile laser cutter and large mobile laser cutter, due to their ability to move around.

Super Teleport [ edit ]

  • Dependence: Tool Store (UP1) + Teleport Pad (UP1) + Power Station (UP1) + Support Station (UP1)
  • Materials: 20 Ore, 3 Energy Crystals
  • Upgrades:
    1. Allows construction of Chrome Crusher, Large Mobile Laser Cutter, and Cargo Carrier
  • Training: none

The super teleport is an expensive building, and takes up more space than any building in the game, but allows access to the largest vehicles in the game. Other than that, it has no other main purposes.
