Last summer, British publisher DK added to its extensive collection of LEGO books with the Build Your Own Adventure series, starting with a pair of Ninjago and Friends themed adventures. This summer, the series continues with two new volumes that explore the themes of City and Star Wars.

LEGO Star Wars: Build Your Own Adventure is an 80-page hard cover book that comes with an exclusive 73 piece LEGO set and minifgure. It follows the exploits of Rebel pilot Zin Evalon as he journeys through familiar locations from the Star Wars universe, on a mission to recover a set of lost data cubes.

Following the established BYOA format, the book’s pictoral story is spread over several chapters, each covering a different location including Hoth, Tatooine, and Endor. The environments and vehicles in the story are illustrated using over 50 ‘inspirational’ LEGO models that were the work of fan builder (and Brothers Brick editor) Rod Gilles.

The book is also filled with a wealth of accompanying text (appropriate for reading ages 8 and up) so there is plenty here to engage your LEGO Star Wars loving youngsters. As well as covering the events of the story, many interesting details about characters and equipment are called out. But most significantly, the book offers a wealth of technical advice for recreating the models shown, including what parts to use and tips on building techniques employed by master fan builders like Rod. To help make sense of these guidelines, there is also a “Builder Talk” section explaining the language that builders use to describe various different kinds of LEGO bricks.

The book comes with a minifigure of the main character and all the bricks necessary to recreate the Y-wing Rebel ship that he uses to travel across the galaxy. The book contains instructions for building this ship (but not the inspirational models) and it’s fairly easy to put together. The design of the model is based on LEGO’s adorable Microfighter line, and this is the first appearance of a Y-wing in this format.

The inclusion of the ship and figure gives young readers a way to follow along with and play out the action of the story as they work through the book. The various inspirational models in the book are excellently designed, and are small and simple enough that most young Star Wars fans should be able to approximate them using bricks from their own collections, especially since all of the action takes place on worlds already covered pretty extensively by LEGO’s official lineup of Star Wars sets.

What I like about the BYOA series is the way visual storytelling, a matching toy, inspirational content and detailed guidelines combine to create a rich and appealing package that offers more than a simple one-dimensional or one-off reading experience. Every time the reader picks up this book, they can choose whether to simply enjoy the story, join in the action, study all the tiny details, recreate the scenes, or use this as a springboard for their imagination and build their own version of the Star Wars universe or take the story in a completely new direction. DK’s use of fan builders for this series of books is also a clever move, as it makes the experience feel more personal, and offers yet another kind of inspiration for its readers.

The BYOA series appears to be a replacement for DK’s long running Brickmaster series, and one improvement that I particularly like is that the box housing the LEGO bricks is now separate from the hard cover book (both are housed in a sturdy binder). With Brickmaster, the box was part of the front cover, making the book feel disposable and more awkward to handle. But the BYOA books feel like fully fledged DK books that their young owners will want to pull from the shelf over and over again.

Oh, and here’s one final tip for readers: Don’t throw away that box, it also doubles as a launch pad!

May the 4th — Star Wars Day. Perfect timing to take an exclusive first look at the new LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure book. Galactic Missions comes with a new Cloud Car model and Bespin Guard minifigure, and the story is packed with new LEGO Star Wars models and building tips put together by The Brothers Brick’s very own Rod Gillies. The book will be available in August, and can be pre-ordered now from Amazon.

LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure

We caught up with Rod to find out more about the new book, and what it’s like for a ‘fan-builder’ to work on a project with the LEGO Star Wars team and book publisher Dorling Kindersley.

LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure

The Brothers Brick: What was it like working on another LEGO Star Wars book, and how is this new one different from the previous titles you’ve worked on?

Rod Gillies: It’s great fun doing these books. I’ve always been a big Star Wars fan, and obviously I also love LEGO. Being asked to do these books represents the perfect centre of the Venn Diagram of my geekery!
This book felt really different from other Star Wars titles I’ve been involved in. The LEGO Star Wars Ideas Book didn’t have an over-arching narrative, and the previous Star Wars BYOA book followed a single character on a mission to different planets. Galactic Missions takes a different approach — it’s a collection of stories about different characters, from different places and eras in the Star Wars universe.
And beyond the story, we’ve done some new things with the models in this book. There are microscale scenes introducing each chapter — something I was really keen to include. Microscale is a great way to build epic Star Wars scenes without needing a massive brick collection. I really hope these models inspire kids to look at their bricks in a new way.

TBB: So where do these Galactic Missions take the reader?

Rod: We visit Naboo during the Trade Federation invasion, see Rey outwit the First Order on Jakku, spend time with young Han Solo on Corellia, tangle with bounty hunters on Bespin, and take a tropical trip to Scarif. It was great to work on such a variety of environments, trying to capture the signature look of each planet in relatively simple models that hopefully inspire kids to build.

TBB: Which was your favourite?

Rod: Probably Scarif. The tropical island feel is something genuinely different in look for Star Wars. And turning it into an Imperial Holiday Resort appealed to my sense of humour. There are some cool models in that section, including a Y-Wing Submarine. And just wait until you see what Darth Vader is up to! When we come up with some of the funnier ideas I sometimes wonder if LEGO and Disney/Lucasfilm will actually approve them — but they’ve been really happy to let us have some fun with things.

LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure

TBB: And what was the most challenging section to work on?

Rod: That would be Corellia. We were coming up with the story for the book, and I had started building models, before Solo had even been released. I’d had to sign an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) before starting on the book, but even then, the guys from the LEGO Star Wars design team were very careful not to give anything away about what was coming. All they could really give me was rough ideas and colour suggestions for the scenery elements. Luckily I was sent a couple of the Solo sets just prior to their release, so I could build vehicles etc in the style of the movie. I’m particularly pleased with the two Corellian speeders you can see in the spreads below — I was trying to give them the striped styling and colouring seen on Corellian spaceships in many of the Star Wars movies and games.

TBB: How long does the creative process take on one of these books? When do you start building?

Rod: The initial discussions happen about 18 months before publication. The guys at Dorling Kindersley will come up with an initial plot synopsis, which we’ll kick around. I might make model suggestions which could affect the story, changes which in turn can prompt more model ideas. I’ll complete a series of sketches of what I’m thinking about rather than building anything at this stage. The plot synopsis and model ideas then need to be approved by LEGO and Disney/Lucasfilm. Once we’ve got that sign-off I’ll get to work.
The building process usually takes about two months, and then it’s the dreaded Model Review! This is where the LEGO Star Wars design team and some of the model coaches will take a good look at the things I’ve built — checking the building techniques and solidity, the fit with Star Wars, and that they’re not too complex to inspire kids to build their own versions. It’s a nerve-wracking meeting! After that, there’s invariably another month of tweaks and changes, and then all the models go off to Dorling Kindersley for photography. My work is done, and 6-9 months later the book gets published.

Here’s an example of the process on two models from the Scarif section of the book — my initial sketches, and the final models. Whilst my drawings are clearly terrible, and the details will change during the building and review process, the sketches are really useful, allowing us to talk about ideas at an early stage…

LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure

TBB: Those are nice little Imperial vehicles! Are the LEGO Star Wars team happy for you to come up with new things like the hovercraft?

Rod: Yes. They’ve always been really open to things like this. It’s always surprising how willing they are to have some fun with such a tightly-managed license. As long as what we suggest fits the universe, and looks the part, they’ve been okay with us introducing vehicles or spaceships that haven’t been seen before in Star Wars. The mining pod from the Bespin spread below, and the multi-wheeled First Order vehicle on Jakku, are good examples of this…

LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure

TBB: Sounds like you’ve enjoyed yourself working on this book. Are there more Build Your Own Adventure titles in the works?

Rod: I loved working on this book — it was a blast. And I’ve just started work on some new stuff with Dorling Kindersley for publication next year. I could tell you what it is, but then the terms of the NDA say I’d have to kill you. Sorry!

LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure Review

LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure is a cool book that also comes with LEGO bricks and a minifigure.

What you will really like about it is:

  • The minifig has a neat helmet and a weapon.
  • Zin (the minifig) is exclusive to this book!
  • Includes exclusive Y-Wing building set.
  • DK publisheshigh quality books.
  • It includes a lot of awesome ideas for additional Star Wars building.
  • This title is packed full of color pictures.

There is a lot to like! Plus you can get it for a great price here.

What Is In the New Build Your Own Adventure Book?

When you first take a look at the book you notice a slipcover with two items in it. One is a nice hardcover book with 80 pages in it and the other is a box.

The box includes the LEGO bricks and minifig. Note that the box looks like it includes a lot more pieces than it does and when you open it you see the plastic bag with the LEGO in it.

Get this DK LEGO Star Wars book! It comes with exclusive minifig and parts to build a starfighter too. (ad)

While that seems a bit disappointing at first, I am sharing with you exactly what is in there so you will know ahead of time.

This new series from DK appears to be replacing the LEGO Brickmaster books. The packaging for this new series is way better than it was for the Brickmaster books.

You end up with a hardcover book that you can keep and use again and again. So all in all it is a better way to put the book and the pieces together.

You Get an Exclusive Minifig and Y-Wing Fighter!

It is tough to say if the book or the exclusives are the best. We love both.

With this book set you have an exclusive minifig that is not sold elsewhere and you get all the pieces to make his exclusive Y-Wing starship.

There are not a lot of rare pieces in this but we did like adding the yellow pieces to our collection and, of course, another minfig is always welcome!

Building Instructions for the Y-Wing Fighter

The book includes step-by-step building instructions and all of the pieces for the Y-Wing Fighter. You can see in the picture below of my son building the set that they are somewhat similar to the instructions that come with LEGO sets.

The only difference is for some reason the instructions go from top to bottom instead of left to right. But that is easy to figure out quickly and didn’t stop the building fun.

Fun times building Zin

A Peak Inside LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure

Here is a page spread from the book. As you can see it is full of great images and has a lot of details included. The whole book is like this! Psst – see our video below for even more info.

It is packed with ideas for building. You may have to improvise on what pieces you use as even those with pretty decent sized LEGO collections are not going to have every piece.

If you have a lot of LEGO Star Wars sets you may have more pieces to use. Either way, there are some really great things you can learn to build.

A special thank you to DK for the use of the image above.

Also take note that this book has a storyline as it goes along and it has a great comic book-like feel that I know kids are going to love.

The Finished Minifig and Set

We wanted to include the completed minifig and set in our LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure review so you could see for yourself. What do you think? We like it a lot 🙂

Wow! We are loving this book and the minifig and Y-Wing fighter that came with it. (ad)

Don’t Forget the Back of the Box!

We almost missed this. As I was picking up the packaging material from this book set I noticed that the back of the box was a landing pad for the ship. I love little details and that was a very nice touch. Your kids can keep it and have something to use to start playing with their new set right away.

This book comes with a bonus landing pad on the back of the box - how cool is that? Read our review to learn more. (ad)

All in all we are super happy with the book and will be taking a look at other Build Your Own Adventure books in the future. I know I say this every time I include a DK book in a list, but honestly, DK always puts out excellent books.

Discover five exciting adventures from around the LEGO® Star Wars ™ galaxy. Missions feature your favourite characters, including Rey and Han Solo. Building tips and ideas throughout will inspire your own LEGO Star Wars model.

Molto bello a un prezzo giusto, modello e minifig validi, stile microfighters.le idee nel libro sono originali e attuabili con pochi pezzi, non necessariamente quelli consigliati.da non perdere :)

I’m a bit confused as to why this set contains a Bespin Guard minifigure, rather than, say, a Cloud Car pilot? The latter would have made much more sense. I wasn’t a huge fan of the Cloud Car itself either, but that’s a personal preference. It resembles the Microfighters range, which just look weird to me. Why do our heroes sit on top of crafts they should be sitting in? Also, I had a lot of red bricks during my Lego playing heyday, and I’ve never quite got over my disdain for this quotidian block (even though the model doesn’t use any of these).

The light-hearted poster rather makes a mockery of the noble sacrifice that took place on Scarif during Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It seems insensitive to the friends and families of Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, Chirrut Îmwe, Galen Erso, K-2SO and Bodhi Rook, to show stormtroopers cavorting on the beach exclaiming things such as, ‘Scarif-Fruit is my favourite’ and ‘Race you for that ice cream!’ How quickly people forget…

You’ll need to carefully press along the perforated lines to pop out your bookmarks, which seem to me to be something of an afterthought. One is the Bespin Guard that comes with the set, the other is rather randomly Qi'ra in her Corellia guise from Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The book has high-production values, with colour images throughout. It takes us all over the Star Wars galaxy, making stops at Naboo, Corellia, Scarif, Jakku and - of course - Bespin. There are plenty of story seeds and building inspirations. It’s fun, colourful and features the signature Lego irreverent take on the Star Wars universe.

This Build Your Own Adventure book is the second in the Star Wars line and is a decent value model, figure and book combination. It features a few loose stories, told through the usual excellent DK LEGO photography and some quite witty writing. The layout, design and feel of the book is really good. It's beautifully put together and a joy to read through.

Being a Build Your Own Adventure book, the idea is that the various small models featured can be built by the reader using the LEGO bricks in their collection. This is a good concept but tricky to execute: a number of the models have details and certain part requirements which need a wide range of LEGO bricks, obviously including Star Wars sets and ranging right through to LEGO Technic parts.

Of course, you can work with what you have and the argument goes that your imagination is a key component to having fun with LEGO, so the book can be used as more of a guide than a set of instructions. It does include the latter however, for the included Cloud Car model and its pilot. This is an interesting choice for such a book, as it's a vehicle which hasn't featured too much in the LEGO world. It has a design similar to the Microfighters range and looks OK when completed. The pilot wears an authentic but slightly dull Cloud City uniform and carries a small grey blaster. It's all fine but not as good as the Y-Wing and pilot featured in the previous LEGO Star Wars Build Your Own Adventure book.

It's an entertaining and engaging read, with some nice model ideas. It'll stretch your building skills (and brick collection) and you get an exclusive, if slightly dull, Cloud Car. Pretty good value for the money and worth a look.
