Have you ever heard of the minifigure Jedi Bob? He’s a LEGO Star Wars legend but many fans have no idea who he is. This article will reveal the truth about this mysterious minifigure. Who was he? What sets was he in? Is Bob an alias? Did he survive the Jedi purge? Will we ever see him again?
Weirdly, this article contains spoilers for the video game Jedi Fallen Order. If you want to play the game with a spoiler free experience, I recommend reading another article (perhaps UrbanBrix’s great article on LEGO Star Wars sets from 2012).
What set was he in?
In 2002 LEGO released a Republic Gunship set to coincide with the release of Attack of the Clones. Set 7163 came with four clone troopers, two super battle droids, a droideka and a mysterious Jedi knight. This Jedi wore a dark grey tunic, a brown hood and wielded a neon green lightsaber. Fans later dubbed this minifigure Jedi Bob as LEGO didn’t name the minifigure.

What do we know about him?
LEGO has scattered information about him across a series of DK books. LEGO first confirmed the character’s name, “Jedi Bob”, in the 2009 DK LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary. The 2011 Visual Dictionary revealed some more details. The book stated that Jedi Bob wore a brown cloak and hood to help the Jedi remain anonymous. The updated and expanded Visual dictionary that came out in April 2019 stated that:
“The end of the Clone wars sees most Jedi killed and the Jedi temple ransacked, with many records lost. All we know about this Jedi (whose name may have been Bob) is that he once flew on a republic gunship.”
Was Jedi Bob based on a Jedi in Attack of the Clones?
No one is sure whether he was meant to depict a specific Jedi Knight from Attack of the Clones. Some fans have argued that he was probably meant to be Jedi Nicanas Tassu. Tassu was the Jedi who tossed Anakin a spare lightsaber in the battle of Geonosis. This theory does hold some weight. Firstly, Bob and Tassu both share remarkably similar facial hair (its uncanny). Secondly, we know Bob and Tassu both fought at the battle of Geonosis. They also both wield green lightsabers. In fact, I’m fairly convinced that the unnamed Jedi was originally intended to be Nicanas Tassu.
However, there is also some evidence to the contrary. The 2017 Ultimate LEGO Star Wars DK book labelled the character as a “LEGO creation”. If this minifigure was meant to be Nicanas Tassu, surely they would have said the character was based off a Jedi in Attack of the Clones.
Could he be Taron Malicos?
Whilst researching this article I searched “Who is Jedi Bob?” on Google. Google provided a list of related questions that other people had searched. It appears as if someone searched “Is Jedi Bob Taron Malicos?”.
For those of you who don’t know, Taron Malicos was a Jedi exile who survived Order 66. He turned to the dark side and fought Cal Kestis on Dathomir. Could he have fallen to the dark side? I mean both characters have fetching beards so the theory isn’t totally out of the question. I’m tempted to subscribe to the theory. I could totally see Jedi Bob becoming a topless Jedi exile. However, I don’t think this was the intent of LEGO or the Jedi Fallen Order creators.
Could Jedi Bob appear in LEGO Star Wars the Skywalker Saga game?
The Skywalker Saga game will supposedly have around 500 playable characters so it wouldn’t surprise me if he makes a triumphant return.
Will he ever return in minifigure form?
LEGO held a fan vote in early 2020 to determine what a future LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collectors Series set would be. The Republic Gunship won the competition with over 50% of the vote, in part due to the fierce campaigning of several YouTubers. Could Jedi Bob make a comeback in a UCS LAAT?
I think the chances of a new Jedi Bob minifigure have never been higher. The UCS fan vote had a minifigure suggestion box. YouTubers such as MandRproductions asked their fans to request the inclusion of a Jedi Bob minifigure. The creation of a 501st battle pack proves LEGO listens to their fans and takes their feedback on board. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if LEGO bowed to fan demand and included a Jedi Bob minifigure in the set.
How can I get my hands on the legendary Jedi Bob?
Unfortunately, due to the characters notoriety within the LEGO Star Wars community, Jedi Bob minifigures are expensive and hard to come by.
Fortunately, it is easy enough to part together a minifigure that closely resembles Jedi Bob. I recommend using Ben Kenobi’s torso and a pair of dark brown legs. If you want to give him a classic look, I suggest using a yellow head piece and a classic brown hood piece. However, if you want to update your Jedi Bob minifigure I recommend using a pale flesh head and LEGO’s new open hood piece. To complete the look, I suggest adding one of FireStar Toys custom cape pieces.

After the conclusion of last year’s LEGO Ideas Star Wars UCS Fan vote, which saw a victory for the Republic Gunship, there has been a lot of debate and speculation around this upcoming Ultimate Collector’s Series set.

Recent LEGO Media Roundtable discussions have revealed that this new UCS set will soon be arriving on shelves sometime later this year, although not much else has been revealed yet.
LEGO CON, an all-new 2-hour live event streaming from The LEGO House is less than a week away, premiering on 26 June 2021 at 5pm BST, 12pm EST, 9am PST, and 2am (27 June 2021) in AEST for those of us in Australia, and the team have teased the reveal of a new LEGO Star Wars set – of which many are speculating that it will be the UCS Republic Gunship.
During a recent LEGO Star Wars roundtable, we got the opportunity to hear from the LEGO Star Wars design team, and ask a few questions about the upcoming UCS Republic Gunship, and while they did rule out the inclusion of the Jedi Bob minifigure, who knows, they might surprise us.
Nothing is known of the 2021 LEGO UCS Republic Gunship minifigure selection – no information has been given yet, and this has led to a lot of speculation as to what minifigures will hopefully be included.
Some fans want an updated Mace Windu, others want a never-seen-before Phase II Commander Cody, but there has been one interesting yet common request from fans of the original.
Jedi Bob.
While he may not be included in the set… (or will he make a surprise appearance?), let’s get into the history and answer the question.
Who is Jedi Bob?
Jedi Bob is the name given by LEGO fans to an unnamed Jedi Knight minifigure that appeared in 7163 Republic Gunship from 2002, alongside four clone troopers, two super battle droids, and a droideka. He wields a green lightsaber and sports a grey tunic with a brown Jedi cloak.
Why is he so popular among LEGO fans? That isn’t entirely clear. Maybe it’s his friendly smiling demeanor, with his bearded face lifted from the LEGO City line.
Maybe it’s the fact that he is the only generic Jedi minifigure LEGO has made in a yellow skin tone. Or maybe it’s the fact that he’s one of the few Star Wars characters with the name “Bob”.
Unfortunately, little else is known about Jedi Bob. The only information we have about him is from the LEGO Star Wars DK encyclopedias. In fact, the 2009 DK LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary book was the first to name him “Jedi Bob”.
His legendary status also means that he’s worth quite a bit to LEGO Star Wars collectors. How much does a Jedi Bob cost?
At the time of writing, it’ll cost you on average, about US$100 for a used one, and approximately US$170 for a new copy on Bricklink. If you own the original Republic Gunship with Jedi Bob still intact… you’re probably sitting on a small LEGO fortune.
Some fans have speculated that Jedi Bob is based on Nicanas Tassu from Attack of the Clones, due to his beard, dark-colored robes, and green lightsaber.
Tassu was the Jedi who tossed a lightsaber to Anakin at the Battle of Geonosis, but no official source from LEGO has ever stated that Jedi Bob was based on Tassu.
So how does this factor into the upcoming UCS Republic Gunship set? Well, with its imminent release, many fans are hoping that we will get a new, updated minifigure of Jedi Bob in the set.
That said, it has not, and has never been confirmed that Jedi Bob will make an appearance – it’s all wishful thinking at the moment.
Nonetheless, it’s great to see an obscure LEGO Star Wars character get so much love for the fans, and the lore behind Jedi Bob (or the lack thereof) is interesting and worth exploring.
Time will tell whether or not this beloved Jedi will reappear in the upcoming UCS Gunship, but what do you think? Even if he won’t make an appearance in the set, I think it’s more than possible he’ll make an appearance as a gift with purchase, or maybe even a VIP reward.

The mysterious Jedi Bob wields a green-bladed lightsaber
Jedi Bob During the Clone Wars
Sometime before the Clone Wars, the individual referred to as Jedi Bob ascends to the rank of Jedi Knight within the Jedi Order. He wields a single-bladed green lightsaber. At some point during the Clone Wars era, he flies aboard a Republic Gunship along with several Republic clone troopers.
Most of Jedi Bob’s background remains a mystery, including his fate during and following the Clone Wars. It’s unknown if he survives the enactment of Order 66 and the ensuing Jedi Purge. Most records of Bob are lost following the death of most Jedi and the ransacking of the Jedi Temple.
LEGO Jedi Bob Minifigure Popularity
The Jedi Bob minifigure features black eyes, raised gray eyebrows and a gray beard. His open, slightly lopsided mouth presents a friendly, relaxed and approachable demeanor. The mystery Jedi shares the same LEGO head with a generic construction worker minifigure and a character named Mac from the Life on Mars line. He wears a dark gray tunic along with a brown hood, cloak and pants. The figure wields a standard, single-bladed, trans-neon green lightsaber with a chrome silver hilt.
The Jedi Bob minifigure ONLY appears in the LEGO set 7163 Republic Gun, released in 2002. The popularity of the character combined with the scarcity of the minifigure have made the mystery Jedi a highly sought after collector’s item. The minifigure in new condition has sold on BrickLink for between $75 and $175 in mid to late 2021.
Reconstructing the exact minifigure for pieces is expensive, too. The torso piece for the minifigure is rare since it is exclusively used for the mystery Jedi and not for any other LEGO Jedi characters.
Is Jedi Bob actually Jedi Nicanas Tassu or former Jedi Master Taron Malicos?
Some LEGO Star Wars fans speculate that Jedi Bob is actually Geonosis arena Jedi Knight Nicanas Tassu or former Clone Wars era Jedi General Taron Malicos.
Tassu participates in Jedi Master Mace Windu’s Geonosis Jedi task force, tossing a spare lightsaber to Anakin Skywalker. Nicanas Tassu shares several similar features with Bob including: a beard, brown Jedi robes, green bladed lightsaber.
Additional fan theory speculates that Taron Malicos from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is in fact Jedi Bob. Malicos serves as a Jedi General during the Clone Wars and turns to the dark side after Order 66. Malicos has a beard during the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

The mysterious Jedi first appears in the LEGO set 7163 Republic Gunship (2002) from the Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones product line. Since the figure is generic/not named, Star Wars LEGO fans began referring to the character as “Bob” or “Jedi Bob”.
The Jedi is first officially referred to as “someone who may have been named Bob” in the reference book LEGO Star Wars: A Visual Dictionary (2009).
