Background [ edit ]

The Galactic Republic was a peaceful government that lasted for more than twenty-five thousand years. Then, in Episode I, the Trade Federation (later known as the Separatists), a trading group, has been convinced by the evil Sith Lord Darth Sidious, who was actually Senator Palpatine, to attack the world of Naboo using their Droid Army. They attacked, but Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn were called in from Coruscant, and they freed Queen Amidala and her advisors and pilots from the droids and fled to Coruscant, but had to stop at Tatooine for repairs after they broke through the Droid Navy blockade at Naboo. Later, they met Anakin Skywalker, a Force-sensitive slave on the world. After going to his house and meeting his mother, Qui-Gon Jinn realized the potential that Anakin had in himself and believed that he was the chosen one. Later on Anakin entered a podrace and won first place and enough money for the others to repair the queen's ship. Then Anakin left Tatooine to grow up and become a Jedi Knight. The queen had asked the new Supreme Chancellor (Palpatine) for help on the invasion of her planet, but she didn't get that much help from that. So the only choice she was left with was asking the Gungan army for help. This was now the Battle of Naboo. It was the Gungan Army, and the Naboo Army against the Trade Federation. Anakin had stumbled into a Naboo Starfighter and had flew off into space to destroy the Droid Control Ship, while the others had been fighting off droids. They all then stumbled into Darth Maul, so the plan was Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan fight him off while the others deal with the droids. In the battle in space, Anakin destroyed the ship and saved the Gungans from certain defeat, and possibly death. Amidala and her troops succeded in their part. So did Obi-Wan, but in order to have this happen Qui-Gon got killed by Darth Maul, which lead to the anger and sorrow that built up in himself, so he instantly flipped, grabbing his master's lightsaber, and cut Darth Maul in half. There was then celebration on Naboo.

Later in Episode II, the Trade Federation called in two assassins, Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett and Clawdite assassin Zam Wesell, to assassinate the Senator of Naboo, Padme Amidala. After the attempt was quelled by her bodyguards, Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Padawan Anakin Skywalker, Kenobi was sent to Kamino to track Jango Fett. While he was there, he discovered that a clone army was being created at the request of the now dead Jedi, Master Sifo-Dyas. Anakin was ordered to stay and guard Padme on Naboo. Obi Wan found out that the Separatist Alliance was building a droid army, so he tried to inform the Jedi Council, and then was captured, but Anakin and Padme were on Tatooine because Anakin was searching for his mother, and they picked up the message. Then, the two went to Geonosis but were also captured, but a strike team of Jedi came to rescue them. After a short skirmish, Master Yoda came with the Clone Army to rescue the Jedi. Then, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi attempted to capture Count Dooku. Count Dooku escaped after cutting off Anakin's hand. The Clone Wars had begun.

In Episode III, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and the Republic fought against a large Separatist Navy fleet in orbit of Coruscant. They boarded cyborg General Grievous's flagship, the Invisible Hand and dueled Count Dooku, and freed Chancellor Palpatine from him, who was being held prisoner. Palpatine wanted Anakin Skywalker be his personal representative of the Jedi Council. The Jedi approved, but did not grant him the title "Jedi Master". Anakin became angry at the Jedi Order for not letting him become a Master, and got even angrier that Palpatine, who was Anakin's friend, was untrusted by the Order and they wanted Anakin to spy on him. Anakin refused, and later Kenobi and the 212th Attack Battalion was sent to Utapau, a world where Grievous was spotted, and Anakin had to stay on Coruscant. Later, Yoda went to Kashyyyk in the Outer Rim to defend it from the invading Separatist forces, and then Palpatine gave the Clone troopers across the galaxy Order 66, contingency order that branded Jedi traitors to the Republic. Clones across the Galaxy turned on their Generals and killed them, and only a few survived. Anakin became a Sith named Darth Vader, and went to the volcanic world of Mustafar where he received the order to "Take care of the Seperatists". Then Padmé arrived and told him what Obi-Wan said. Obi-Wan, who was secretly aboard, looked at what happened, and Vader force-chokes Padmé. The 2 battle, and Vader lost, got his legs cut off, then fell near a lava river, but was rescued by Palpatine and a squad of Shock troopers. Padmé is taken to a hospital, where Luke and Leia are born. Padmé dies, having lost the will to live, Yoda exiles himself to Dagobah, Bail Organa adopts Leia, and Luke is brought to his Uncle and aunt, Owen and Beru on Tatooine.

In the standalone film Rogue One, the scientist Galen Erso was captured by the Galactic Empire. His daughter, Jyn, was rescued by Saw Gerrera, a veteran of the Clone Wars. Thirteen years later, Jyn joined the Rebel Alliance. She, CaptainCassian Andor, and the reprogammed Imperial droid K-2SO, travelled to the moon Jedha to convince Saw to release the Imperial defector Bodhi Rook, who had a message from Galen. In the message, Galen revealed a flaw in the secret superweapon called the Death Star, and instructed Jyn to recover the Death Star's plans. Jyn, Cassian, and K-2SO, along with Guardian of the Whills Chirrut Îmwe and former Guardian and soldier Baze Malbus, escaped Jedha just as the Death Star destroyed the city they were in, while Saw and the other inhabitants were killed. On Eadu, Director Krennic led Galen to admit to betraying the Empire by putting a flaw in the Death Star. Before Galen can be taken care of, however, Rebel Alliance members bombed the station and killed Galen shortly after he was being reunited with Jyn, much to her grief. The Alliance deemed Jyn's words as not enough proof to the flaw in the Death Star, and Jyn, Cassian, and others formed the group Rogue One. Rogue One attacked the planet Scarif and stole the plans. The plans were received by the Alliance, but Scarif was destroyed by the Empire, killing Rebel and Imperial forces alike. The rebels barely escaped an attack from Darth Vader on the ship Tantive IV.

Soon after, in Episode IV, Princess Leia, who was a member of the Rebel Alliance and owner of the Tantive IV, were being pursued by Vader's flagship, the ISD Devastator. She was captured after Stormtroopers, Imperial soldiers, boarded the ship and killed everyone onboard. She put a message for Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Death Star plans in R2-D2, an astromech droid. Him, along with a protocol droid named C-3PO, went to Tatooine in an escape pod. The two wandered in the desert but were captured by Jawa creatures, and the Empire sent troops to find them. Luke Skywalker was a teen living on the desert world of Tatooine, was Force-sensitive and wanted to go to the Imperial Academy, but his Aunt and Uncle didn't let him for another year. Later, his Uncle purchased two droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO, an Astromech and a Protocol droid, to work around the farm. When R2-D2 went missing one day, so Luke and C-3PO went after him. They found him but were attacked by Tusken Raiders, and were rescued by Obi-Wan, who called himself Ben Kenobi. Luke found out that Kenobi was a Jedi, and Kenobi told him he was Force-sensitive, and he should train to become a Jedi. The four stumbled upon a destroyed Jawa sand crawler who were the ones that sold Artoo and Threepio to Luke. He went back to the farm and saw that everything was destroyed. He left with Ben to the world of Alderaan with Han Solo and Chewbacca and the droids, but they saw that the world was destroyed by the Death Star. They were captured by it, and rescued Leia from the prison while Ben turned off the Tractor Beam, and was killed. The others escaped to the Rebel base, and after an attack on the Death Star, it was destroyed.

Later in Episode V, Luke joined the Rebellion and was patrolling around Echo Base on the frozen ice world of Hoth. The Empire was searching for the Rebel base and sent an Imperial probe droid to Hoth, and Luke was thought it was a meteor crash. He was attacked by a Wampa ice creature, but later escaped from it and was rescued by Han Solo, who stayed around the base longer then he bargained for. Later, the Empire attacked with Snowtroopers and massive All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT ) walkers, led by General Veers. Luke lead a squad of snowspeeders to take out the walkers, but failed and the base was lost. The surviving Rebel troops evacuated. Han, Leia, Threepio and Chewbacca were followed by a squad of Star Destroyers, and fled into an asteroid field hoping they would give up the chase. They landed inside and asteroid, but realized it was a space slug, and quickly left. They then headed to Cloud City, where Han's friend Lando Calrissian was located. Later, Han was betrayed by Calrissian, captured, and Luke left his training on Dagobah, a swamp world that was residence to master Yoda, and went to Cloud City. Han was taken by Jango Fett's son, Boba Fett, to the crime lord Jabba the Hutt and was frozen in carbonite. Leia, Luke, Chewie, R2, Threepio, and Lando escaped.

In Episode VI, Leia tried to rescue Han from Jabba's palace on Tatooine but was captured. Luke came to try to rescue Han, Chewbacca, Leia, Threepio, and R2, but was taken prisoner. He then was forced into a pit with a horrible rancor monster, but managed to kill the beast. Luke was to be thrown into the mouth of the Sarlacc, but managed to get to Jabba's sail barge, destroy it, and escaped with Leia, Han, Chewie, Lando, and the two droids. They made it to the Rebel fleet, where the space attack on the Death Star II battle station over the forest moon of Endor was being planned. Luke, Han, Chewie, Leia, and the droids were to go down to the moon's surface with a group of Rebel Commandos and destroy the shield generator bunker on the planet surface. They left to the world and made it past the blockade, and landed. They went to the bunker, but had to fight Scout troopers on speeder bikes and Leia was lost and captured by Ewoks. Then, the strike team waited near the bunker while the droids, Luke, Han, and Chewie searched for Leia, but were captured by Ewoks, but freed and were made part of the tribe. They then attacked the bunker, and the fleet attacked the Death Star, and Luke told Leia that she was his sister and Vader was their father, and left to Vader to turn him to the light side. The bunker was destroyed after a battle, and Luke managed to turn Vader to the light side but Vader died while killing the Emperor on the Death Star. Meanwhile, the Death Star II was destroyed. The Rebel Alliance, Ewoks, and other planets (like Tatooine, Coruscant, and Naboo) celebrated the fall of the Empire. Luke saw the spirits of Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Anakin during the celebration. After watching them, he turned back to enjoy the festivities.

Thirty years later, in Episode VII, an organization called the First Order was led by Snoke, who wanted to find Luke Skywalker and end the Jedi. Leia now led the Resistance, a force that battled the First Order. Poe Dameron, the Resistance's best pilot, gived his droid, BB-8, the map to Luke. BB-8 met the scavenger Rey, while Poe escapeed with the stormtrooper FN-2187, who he nicknameed "Finn". Rey and Finn met each other, and they escaped with BB-8 on the Millennium Falcon, which was recaptured by Han and Chewbacca, the original owners. They headed to Takodana and met Maz Kanata, who gave Finn the lightsaber that once belonged to both Anakin and Luke Skywalker when Rey is captured by Kylo Ren, Han and Leia's son, who was obsessed with following in Darth Vader's footsteps. Rey was rescued on Starkiller Base, a killer of entire planet systems, while Han was killed by Ren, who attacked Finn and Rey. Rey retrieved Finn's lightsaber and defeated Kylo Ren, and Starkiller Base was destroyed. Rey and Finn escaped on the Millennium Falcon, and Snoke sent General Hux to retrieve Ren, saying that "it is time to complete his training". Rey went to the planet Ahch-To and finally met Luke, handing him his old lightsaber.

Overview and history [ edit ]

At its start in 1999, Star Wars was one of the first officially licensed LEGO themes released, alongside with Winnie the Pooh. The theme was originally planned to end in 2007, but was renewed and slated for discontinuation in 2011. Despite this, LEGO renewed the license yet again until 2016. After that had been announced, Lego established another contract guaranteeing the continuing of the theme at least until 2022. So far, from 1999-2011, there have been 236 LEGO Star Wars sets, including regular sets, Star Wars Mini sets, Midi-scale sets, TECHNIC, Mindstorms and Ultimate Collector Series sets. In 2005 they changed the faces from yellow to a flesh coloured which also continued when Harry Potter used the flesh colour for the brand.

LEGO is a famous toy manufacturer, which was established in 1932 in Denmark. The company is best known for its colorful construction blocks and has its products distributed all over the globe through big toy stores and their own branded retail shops. The Danish group also owns a few Legoland parks in different countries.

Meaning and history

One of the most famous toy manufacturing companies in history was founded in the early 1930s and specialized only in the design and production of wooden toys until 1949. The name of the brand, which today is synonymous with colorful building blocks, was derived from the Danish for “play well” (“Leg Godt”) and has always been written in capitals.

And the case of the letters is probably the most if not the only constant feature of the company’s visual identity, as there have been more than 15 redesigns of the toy manufacturer’s logo designed throughout its history — various shapes, styles, and colors were being adopted.

1934 – 1936

The very first official LEGO logo was composed of a strong and solid wordmark in all capitals, drawn in black and used exclusively for documents and printables. The lettering was executed in an elegant serif typeface with thick vertical bars and playful diagonal serifs. It was a bright and powerful logotype, which only stayed with the brand for a couple of years.

1936 – 1946

In 1936 the company started placing its mark on the products, and the logo was redesigned in order to fit the wooden toys. An italicized brand name in fine lines was placed in the center with two parallel horizontal lines on both sides. The “Fabriken Billund” lettering was placed inside the lines.

It was a very modest and simple logo, which stayed with the company for almost ten years.

1946 – 1950

The first colorful version of the logo was designed in 1946. The palette included orange and black, two colors standing for happiness, energy, and confidence. And again, it was a text-based logo, executed in two different styles.

The orange “LEGO” lettering in clean and neat sans-serif typeface was complemented by a black cursive “Klodster”, placed over its bottom part. It was a more modern and professionally executed emblem, which was a better reflection of the company’s purpose and essence, than all the previous versions.

Another logo was created during the same time period. It was a three-dimensional wordmark placed on a brown and black pedestal, resembling a toy package. It was used only for the brand’s wooden toys, even a few years after the first plastic toy was manufactured.

1950 – 1953

The plastic block era started in the 1950s and the company designed a new visual identity to celebrate it. It was a white circle with a thick black outline and white “Billund Denmark” lettering around its perimeter.

The red stylized “LEGO” lettering was placed in the middle of the circle, repeating its contour.

There was one more version design in 1949 — a yellow bold inscription is a black horizontal oval. As we can see today, the company adopted the color palettes of both versions from the 1950s for their current visual identity. The style of the current inscription is also based on the logo from 1949 — thick rounded letters.

1953 – 1955

Another experiment of the 1950s — bold red wordmark in a strong geometric sans-serif typeface. There were two color schemes — red in white outline, placed on different backgrounds, and red inscription is a yellow rectangle. Both logos were bright and friendly, evoking a sense of happiness.

1955 – 1960

In 1955 the prototype of the current visual identity was designed. The LEGO logo featured a red horizontal oval with white smooth lettering in black outline. There was another detail on this emblem — a thin white horizontal line with two solid circles on its ends. The element resembled a dog bone or made the whole badge look like a button. Whatever it was, it added individuality to the logo and made the brand’s products stand out on the shelf.

It was slightly redesigned throughout the years, and the white home turned into the black one, while the outline of the letters became bolder and made the whole image look more powerful and confident. During a couple of years, the company used the version where the wordmark was in yellow, not white.

1960 – 1964

In 1969 the oval was replaced by a rectangle and the letters of the nameplate were placed closed to each other. There was also a cursive yellow “System” inscription, placed under the main lettering.

The logo from the 1960s looks pretty similar to the current one, the main difference is that on the older version the inscription was slightly extended.

1964 – 1972

The rectangle turned into a square and became a part of a bigger geometric shape. The logo of the toy manufacturer, designed in 1964 was the most colorful of all versions.

The horizontal rectangle was vertically divided into two equal squares — the red with the wordmark on the left and the multicolored square, composed of several vertical lines on the right. It was a reflection of joy, happy playtime and passion, evoking a smile.

1972 – 1998

The red square remained, while the colorful stripes were gone. Now the logo was composed of a white wordmark in a double black and yellow outline. The letters were executed in a bold rounded sans-serif typeface, looking solid yet friendly and kind.

1998 – Today

In 1998 the LEGO visual identity was only slightly refined. The letters are now placed closer to each other and the whole inscription is narrowed, looking neater and more professional.

The signature red, white, yellow and black color palette remains untouched as well as the composition and the mood of the iconic image.

The Lego logo does not at all appear to be too pointed or pedantically even. However, these are exactly the characteristics which meet the main requirement of the Lego factory (with accuracy up to 0.002 mm). But in reality, the Lego logo creates the mood corresponding to its hidden meaning – “Leg Godt” – which means “play well”. Indeed, bright colors of the logo invite to the game.

The typeface designed for the emblem in late 1954 looked very much like the current one. In the course of time the characters grew a bit “plumper”.

Color

The combination of white, yellow, red, and black has been present in the Lego logo since 1960. The diversity is supposed to remind of the basic colors of the Lego blocks themselves.

The iconic Star Wars logo, introduced in 1977 is the third version, created for the famous franchise throughout its history. The first two emblems though were almost not used, as the version of 1976 was for the Star Wars ore-release, and the one, designed in 1977 could only be seen on some early posters and printables.

The logo of the Star Wars franchise from 1976, was designed by Ralph McQuarrie and featured a black logotype, placed on a white background. The inscription featured a custom sans-serif typeface with smooth lines, some of which were inclined to the center. The emblem looked stylish and modern, though too soft and elegant for the plot and mood of the franchise.

With the redesign of 1977, the emblem gained two levels, with extra-bold lettering placed one above another and narrowing to the top. It was a powerful and memorable badge with a very strong and masculine character, where the thick black lines had softened angles and straight cuts of the edges.

1977 – Today

Later in 1977, the iconic Star Wars logo was introduced. And it came to stay. The white sans-serif inscription in wide smooth lines was outlined in black and had the tails of the “R” and both “S” elongated to the sides. This futuristic emblem became recognizable just in one second and today none of the franchise’s producers can be imagined without this monochrome logotype.

Symbol

The Star Wars symbol covered movies (the original trilogy, prequels, sequels, etc.), as well as other visualizations ranging from TV series to computer games. What designers call the Lucas’s Universe retains all signature colors – black (stands for abyss, space, and countless worlds), and red (stands for battle, blood, struggle, and victory).

Once the saga’s cinematographic and mythical value became topped with a tremendous cultural significance, the Star Wars logo was a must for a demonstration of each and every related product – a cartoon or a miniseries. Finally, after the saga’s acquisition by the Disney Studio, the project expanded beyond the American continent. The symbol unified fans into numerous fan clubs and they would happily contribute to fanciful remakes of all types. Besides, first episodes would inevitably hit peak movie chart positions, both in popular and professional segments.

What was even more wonderful was not just the audience’s delight, but also some top critic’s reaction to the product. Experts were pleased to detect responses to challenges thrown by Akiro Kurosava, a famous Japanese film director, and compositional solutions that equaled Sergey Eisenstein. Besides, there were numerous flashbacks to Edgar Barrows, Edward Smith, Frank Herbert, etc. throughout the epic, which book and movie critics noted. All Mr. Lucas wanted to do was create a kind of fantasy world, whose special effects would have covered same old human weaknesses, vices, choices. It would be that same old battle between the Good and the Bad, which would turn out to be more controversial and come down to choosing the lesser of two evils…

Emblem

Eventually, the Star Wars emblem symbolized a stunning success for the 20 th Century Fox, which was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. And for the director, who became a legend overnight. And for the new fantasy world, which was in for years of evolution and numerous media incarnations.

The second movie – the Empire Strikes Back – was directed by Irvin Kershner, the third one – the Return of the Jedi – by Richard Marquand. However, millions of fans still bestowed the creator’s role on George Lucas. All the more so, because he turned out to be a true marketing genius. After the release of the first movie and the outbreak of interest toward the saga, he initiated production of consumer goods featuring the movie’s symbols and logos – T-shirts, toys, and computer games based on the plot. Millions of fans, inspired by the new characters, endowed brand owners with revenues, which exceeded shooting and distribution costs by times. Lucasfilm spent decades monetizing the audience’s interest in the new world by licensing the production of numerous items branded as Star Wars (later, the brand was acquired by Disney).

Empire logo

You don’t have to be obsessed with Star Wars and watch the movie a thousand times to notice the symbol of the Empire. The Star Wars Empire logo appears on uniforms of quite a few characters and also can be seen on flags, starships, and propaganda posters. The emblem allows you to tell which organization the character belongs to, which is very similar to the way emblems are used in our world.

The Galactic Empire’s emblem was chosen by Sheev Palpatine when he established the First Galactic Empire. The logo was supposedly based on the eight-spoked symbol, which was used by the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars.

The latest version of the Star Wars Empire logo was a six-spoked roundel. The white element in its center resembled a stylized depiction of the sun, while the black part of the emblem looked very much like a wheel of a cart or carriage.

What about the real origin of the crest? The design was developed by John Mollo, who is more known as the person who created costumes for Star Wars: Episodes IV and V. According to Mollo, when working at the six-spoked Empire crest, he was inspired by shapes used in 18th-century fortifications. At least, this is what he told in an interview to Star Wars Insider magazine.

Resistance logo

One of the most known emblems from Star Wars, the Star Wars Resistance logo can also be referred to as the Rebel Alliance Starbird (or just Starbird) and the Alliance crest, as well as other names. The reason why one symbol has more than one name is pretty simple: it was used by two different organizations.

Initially, the Starbird was used by the Rebel Alliance (also known as the Alliance to Restore the Republic). In the original trilogy, the Alliance was created by Bail Organa and Mon Mothma to fight against the Galactic Empire. The First Rebellion was based on an older and less organized movement secretly led by Organa.

The crest could be clearly seen on the flight helmets of the Rebel X-wing pilots. According to some researchers, the shape of the emblem could have been inspired by a graffiti left behind by a Mandalorian weapons expert and artist Sabine Wren in Star Wars Rebels. The original graffiti showcased the legendary bird phoenix. The phoenix/Starbird graffiti depicted the creature going up in the air, with its wings spread wide and its head facing to the right.

Thirty years later, Leia Organa created the Resistance, her own military organization to fight the First Order. As the Resistance was inspired by the Rebel Alliance, it was only natural that the new army force borrowed the emblem of its predecessor.

The Star Wars Resistance logo adorned helmets of quite a few starfighter pilots, including Poe Dameron.

The Stars Wars logo wasn’t made up out of an existing font but drawn from scratch specifically for the project. What catches your eye is probably the way the “S” merges seamlessly with the “T” in the first line and the “R” in the second line. This feature creates a visual “rhyme” linking the two lines of the logo.

For instance, the type named Star Jedi Outline comprises letters framed with a thin outline, while the typeface named Star Jedi Logo allows for single or double lines of text. Another type from this family is Star Jedi Special Edition, which is based on the font featured on the emblem of the official Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition.

In addition to the Star Jedi family, you can also find other typefaces inspired by the series. For instance, the Death Star type, which was created by a designer nicknamed Sharkshock. The typeface has tight kerning and is best displayed at large sizes.
