Each Christmas, The LEGO Group give their employees all over the world a special gift set. Since this year is the 20th anniversary of LEGO® Star Wars, it seems they have decided to incorporate the theme by designing a Yuletide X-Wing complete with R2-D2 sleigh and Yoda's igloo. The problem with employee sets is that they are are not released for purchase although inevitably a large amount seem to find their way to the secondary marketplaces.
Recognised LEGO Fan Media (like us!) are lucky enough to also receive one and so we thought we would take a look at this exclusive set with the aim of reassuring you that if you want to build it, that is almost entirely possible thanks to the scarcity of exclusive elements in it.
In the Box
The box is suitably festive, with the Yuletide X-Wing flying over a frozen landscape. Note it is also marked with the Star Wars 20 Years celebration graphic contained within a Christmas bauble.
There are some fun red greebles all over the remainder of the box, using a similar pattern as used on other Star Wars boxes but in red with extra Christmassy elements added. Being a digital render it includes some elements that are not actually available in sets - I had fun spotting these! How many can you see.
There are three instruction booklets and one 'how to box up your set' booklet that is nicely designed in the style of a letter.
Once 'your mission is over for the holiday season' the unfolded letter shows you how to quickly dismantle your Yuletide X-Wing set, to store it away until the next festive season arrives.
The instruction booklets have some fun little quirks inside like the Yuletide Squadron Pilot appearing randomly dangling upside down, and a progress line of candy cane stripes that extends as you complete the model.
New Elements
There are no new moulds in this set but there is one recolour and new prints for the torso and legs of the Yuletide Squadron Pilot.
I am sure most readers will think I am mad, but for me, the most exciting part of this set is the one recoloured element. The Yuletide Squadron Pilot carries a sack in Dark Green/ Green (6291431|10169) which now joins my collection of sacks. (The only non-production colour shown above, i.e. not actually available in any current sets, is Medium Stone Grey/ Light Bluish Gray.)
The Dark Green sack appears with a printed dollar sign in the 71026 DC Comics Collectable minifigure series, held by Cheetah (Prisilla Rich), but the unprinted version is exclusive to this set thus far. If you're purist you could consider removing the printing however, such as by rubbing with Brasso.
New Printed Elements
The other new elements are printed ones, worn by the Yuletide Squadron Pilot Minifigure. He has a new Santa Pilot Torso (6297291) and Santa Pilot Legs (6297291) both in Bright Red/ Red, giving him an Santa-fied flight suit.
It's easier to see the detailed print with his beard removed as the torso features a fur collar at the neck both at the front and rear.
The head (6077870) has been used previously for Obi-Wan Kenobi in a handful of sets including 75159 UCS Death Star in 2016. The Flying Helmet in White (6152273|30171) has been in at least nine other sets, the most recent being released in 2017 while the attached visor in Transparent Red (4569898|2447) is a common element.
Harder-to-Source Elements
To help source the elements to build your own Yuletide X-Wing, I have listed some of the elements that are perhaps a little harder to source; for example some have only appeared in 2019 sets.
The "20 years LEGO® Star Wars" 2x4 Tile in Black (6259797) has only appeared in two previous sets; 40362 Battle of Endor and 40333 Battle of Hoth.
Wedge Plate 12 x 6 Right (6297262|30356) and Left (6297258|30355) have only ever appeared in Bright Red in one previous set, 4403 Air Blazers from 2003. You need two of each to build the four wing sections.
The cockpit printed for the X-wing (Cockpit 4X8X2 - 6247150|39492) comes only in one other set released in 2018, 75218 X-wing Starfighter.
Roof Tile 1X2, Deg. 45, W/O Knobs in Bright Red only appears in one set at present: there are two in 70421 El Fuego's Stunt Truck, from 2019's Hidden Side releases. You will need 16 of this element to build the Yuletide X-wing.
- Box 2x2 in Flame Yellowish Orange/ Bright Light Orange (6279767|59121) appears in three other sets that are recent releases, from late 2019: 40361 Olaf's Traveling Sleigh, 41166 Elsa and the Reindeer Carriage and 41167 Arendelle Castle. This element is actually the same element that was supplied with the Birthday Party Boy in Series 18 Collectible Minifigures in 2018 but his version was red with a blue striped pattern.
- T-Beam W. Plate 1X2 W. Tube in Bright Yellow/ Yellow (6247387|32530) has only appeared in one previous set, also from 2019: 60222 Snow Groomer. It contains four but only one is required in the Yuletide X-wing and it is not even visible in the final model as it hides inside the nose.
- Plate 1X3 W/ 2 Knobs in Bright Yellow (6228602|34103) has only appeared in two previous sets: 21311 Voltron from 2018, and 60203 Ski Resort released in September 2019. Again, it is used internally and it is completely unseen in the final model so there is no need to use this particular colour unless you are very committed to matching all the elements.
- Bow Window with Spokes in White (6173064|20309) has appeared in three different sets, most notably 75218 X-wing Starfighter which used 12 of this element in its construction.
- Plate 3x3 in Bright Red (6217123|11212) has appeared in five sets across 2018 and 2019, including the two required for Speed Champions set 75886 Ferrari 488 GT3 Scuderia Corsa.
The Build
R2-D2 Sleigh
Our favourite droid is playing the part of either a reindeer or the sleigh-driver with this fun little gift distribution system. The underside uses small wheels to ensure that it can travel on smooth surfaces to deliver the presents – when it is not flying, of course.
Two of the boxes contain gifts - Mini Figure Trophy in Warm Gold/ Pearl Gold (6138682|90398) and Roller Skate in Cool Silver, Drum Lacquered/ Metallic Silver (6215447|18747) and there's one spare of each gift if you want to add more immediately. although, later in the instructions, Master Elf Yoda has other ideas.
The R2-D2 minifigure is not new and is made up of: Head (6150296), Body (6055181) and Legs (6278499). It is the same as was found in numerous sets in the past including 75228 Escape Pod vs. Dewback Microfighter and 75257 Millennium Falcon from 2019.
Yoda Igloo Workshop
The second bag contains all the elements required to build Master Elf Yoda's little igloo workshop. There's nothing particularly rare here and Master Yoda himself is made up from previously used elements.
You can build this Master Elf Yoda from: Yoda Head in Olive Green (6032857|13824), Santa Torso with Candy Cane in Bright Red (6297291) and Short Legs in Earth Green (6088409|41879).
On Page 16 of the building process, the instructions show an unusual 'ghost of the future', indicating the completed build in a semi-opaque view. Perhaps this is to keep you incentivised to finish the set??
The structure starts with the wooden-looking workshop within the outer White casing of the igloo. While Yoda's workshop is rather sparse, there is that second set of gifts from the gift boxes on Santa's sleigh. The Mini Toy Duck in Bright Yellow (6269141|58039) and Roller Skate in Bright Blue/ Blue (6267163|18747) go together. surely to give a nod to the iconic LEGO Wooden Duck from yesteryear.
The outer igloo casing is nicely designed using a variety of White curved elements and slopes. All are attached to the SNOT bricks that are stacked to create the inner shape; an effective technique for this particular structure.
The 20 years LEGO Star Wars 2x4 Tile is attached to the side of Yoda's igloo to make this set as an anniversary set. While these are a little tricky to get a hold of in the secondary market, it is not essential to the build and I don't think your set will be any less attractive without it.
The completed Master Elf Yoda workshop includes a couple of trees, torches, some festive decorations and an interesting Technic protrusion from the roof. Is is an antenna? A radar? A surface-to-air missile platform to bring down errant sleighs?
No, actually it is a nice stand for your completed X-Wing to rest upon in a swooshably angled, Christmas present attack position. But let's step back a moment and actually build that X-Wing!
Yuletide X-Wing
The cockpit and wing mechanism are the first parts to be built. You can see that T-Beam W. Plate 1X2 W. Tube in Bright Yellow in position at the front of the cockpit section, where any colour could be used with no visible difference in the final model.
The nose section uses the same angled construction as the previous X-wing from 2018 with a central Technic support. As mentioned the use of Plate 1X3 W/ 2 Knobs in Bright Yellow is not important as any colour would work.
The nose section continues the Warm Gold, Bright Red and White theme and on either side of the hull, Technic axles are positioned to allow the wings to be slotted into place.
You can just see the 1x1 plate with lamp holder in White under the long Red sloped elements and this is where the presents can be attached to gift-bomb those children on the 'good list'.

The fun candy cane weapons systems are a highlight of this model and really emphasise the whimsical Yuletide theme of this ship. The Bow Windows with Spokes in White (6173064|20309) are used in the same manner as the previous 2018 X-Wing: on each of the wing sections to form the curved shaping.
The finishing touches add some more Warm Gold and Transparent Medium Reddish Violet/ Trans-Dark Pink to the engines; this particular starfighter seems to run on a cleaner, candy-pink fuel.
Essentially, the X-wing itself is similar to 75218 X-wing Starfighter but in Christmas colours with a few wing and accessory changes. The wing-opening mechanism in the Yuletide X-Wing is simple but effective.
Conclusion
Im sure anyone who is a LEGO employee will be very happy with their free gift from the company. Unfortunately a lot of LEGO fans and Star Wars fans in general will be less enthused, as this great set is extremely limited in its release.
Putting that aspect to one side, I wouldn't fret too much as there is really only one exclusive minifigure so if you want to build the set, all the elements can be found on the secondary market at the moment. If you are the sort of collector who likes to keep LEGO sets pristine in their boxes, then amongst other options there are plenty to be found on both eBay and BrickLink at time of writing plus within the Marketplace of Brickset forum. you just have to reach inside your santa sack for a few hundred $.
I am not a huge Star Wars fan personally but I thought this festive build was a fun, whimsical take on a Star Wars icon. The igloo was an interesting combination of a clever stand and a knowing nod to Ole Kirk's workshop. The fact that the presents can be dropped from the X-Wing by flicking them off their single-stud attachments suggests playability, although I'm not sure how many of these sets will make it into the hands of children!
If you can't afford to buy a brand new one to store in your attic in a pristine condition then I think it is best just to forget about the exclusive Yuletide Squadron Pilot minifigure and green sack, and build the rest of the set anyway.

Где-то я это уже писал. Ах, да! Недавно я уже писал обзор набора [ 6212 ], ознакомиться с которым можно здесь. Сегодня вашему вниманию я представляю обзор ещё одного X-wing'а в формате минифигурки. Всего их таких выпускалось 5 штук: [ 7140 ] (1999), [ 7142 ] (2000), [ 4502 ] (2004), [ 6212 ] (2006) и [ 9493 ] (2012). Этот обзор будет не столько описательным, сколько сравнительным - я буду часто ссылаться на X-wing 2006 года.
Как и его предшественник, этот набор имеет ряд интересных функций. Правда, в него не входят минифигурки Леи, Хана и Чуи, зато теперь второго пилота не обделили астродроидом).
Упаковка
Мне одному кажется что стены "падают", или у художников действительно туговато с переспективой?

Как всегда, "датского воздуха" TLG не пожалело. С 2006 года ширина и высота коробки не изменились, однако толщина увеличилась:
Инструкция и детали
На пять пакетиков - одна инструкция. Изображение на обложке соответствует изображению на упаковке набора.
Список деталей занимает примерно 1,15 страниц. На оставшемся свободном месте дизайнеры решили в очередной раз продемонстрировать функции только что собранного набора.
Особый интерес представляют эта и эта новые детали.
Любопытно, что в каждом наборе ровно 4 минифигурки.
Минифигурки
Каждый обладатель этого набора получает в свою коллекцию четыре минифигурки: Люк Скайуокер, Йек "Хрюша" Поркинс и их астродроиды. Ни к одной из минифигурок и у меня претензий нет (разве что Люку опять не дали защитные очки).
Помимо минифигурок, в набор также входят два аксессуара: световой меч с голубым лезвием и бластер.
Новый и классический Люки
Самой интересной фигуркой в наборе, на мой взгляд, является R5-D8, так как он имеет новую "башку", выпущенную в этом году.
Два дроида
Истребитель
"Ну наконец-то!" - подумаете вы) Да, мы добрались до основной части набора. Вот так выглядит X-wing "на самом деле":
Этот "крестокрыл" мне даже нравится больше, чем 2006 года. Как минимум за то, что у новой версии пушки нормальной длины)
Типичная ситуация из жизни Люка из 5 эпизода или пост-Эндорской эпохи РВ: куда-то прилетел, где-то застрял, вокруг никого нет, только он сам и R2-D2.
Зато, мне кажется, гипердрайв, генератор дефлектора и всё прочее, что находится позади астродроида, выглядит аккуратнее и более похоже на оригинал. Правда, чтобы сделать нормальную ширину, дизайнерам пришлось повернуть гнездо для дроида на 90 градусов, а это отнимает схожести с оригиналом.
Я забыл включить макро-режим
От "багажника" дизайнеры избавились - в пользу протонных торпед, а вот система передних шасси почти не изменилась:

Основная функция набора осталась прежней: плоскости крыльев могут разворачиваться и сворачиваться. Но если в [ 6212 ] это происходило плавно, то в новой версии нужно поворачивать шестерёнку до тех пор, пока крылья с щелчком резко не раскроются. В принципе, разницы почти никакой.
Для поддержания крыльев снова используются резинки, но сейчас их уже не 6, а 4 (по две сзади на каждом крыле).
Кстати, теперь задняя часть имеет правильную форму шестиугольника.
Ну и наконец, в наборе снова есть возможность менять рисунок на крыльях. Убрал тайл - получил "Красного-5", сажай Люка и R2; добавил тайл - получил "Красного-6", сажай Йека и R5.
Вот только ровно наклеить наклейку на тайл 1х1 почти невозможно, а потому весьма вероятно, что рисунок может получиться кривым.
У Йека 6 полос, а у Люка - пять
Экстра-детали
"Лишних" элементов на этот раз TLG не пожалело:
Всё правильно - если кругляшка 1х1 встречается в 5 пакетиках, то и запасных таких должно быть 5.
Отсебятина
А теперь сравним этот "крестокрыл" с его предшественником, а так же с Revell'овским аналогом и моей моделью в микро-масштабе:
У меня скопилось уже 5 пилотов Альянса, но три одинаковых Люка мне на полочке не нужны. Поэтому я немного поэксперементировал с лицами.
Итак, встречайте, пилоты легендарной "Разбойной эскадрильи" самых разных времён, от Явина (когда это была ещё просто "Красная эскадрилья") до Йуужань-вонгов: Люк Скайуокер, Йек Поркинс, Корран Хорн, Уэс Йансон и Ведж Антиллес (автор идеи лица для последнего - kneng)
