First he was a necromancer in human form, then he was trapped in the Book of Monsters and now he is a cloud. Monstrox is the most evil… uhm… vapor? But even in the form of a cloud, Monstrox is still very powerful. His lightning can turn good people evil and animate stone statues to obey his every twisted command. Robin

Robin is the prime inventor, designer and builder for the NEXO KNIGHTS team. He is the master behind their Battle Suits, mechs and vehicles. His ingenuity is reaching new heights. Robin is still a student at the Knights Academy, but he is doing a year of ‘independent study’ – which means he is helping Merlok 2.0 build something amazing. Robin is a dedicated thinker and amazing builder. When he gets an idea you can be sure it will not be long before incredible inventions start rolling out of his workshop.

Merlok 2.0 (Hologram)

Merlok is the wizard protector of Knighton. He used to be a real-life wizard, but a magic blast dissolved his physical form and now he lives in the Fortrex computers as the sentient operating system Merlok 2.0. In his new, digital shape he helps the knights upgrade with NEXO Powers, but his personality is still the same. He is quirky, kind and very proud of his brave NEXO KNIGHTS heroes. But as awesome as the NEXO Powers are, Merlok stills believes things were better back in days of good, old magic.

Royal Soldier

The Royal Soldiers are obedient bots that follow orders and have a great sense of duty. They take pride in their jobs as soldiers, but they do prefer standing in long ranks at official ceremonies a lot more than being sent into battle against the monsters. They have basic sword skills, but unfortunately their best combat tactics is still holding their sword in front of them, while turning their face the other way and hoping for the best.

King Halbert

Even though he is the king, King Halbert is quite a timid man. He is scared by any dark, loud noise and can get quite nervous when he thinks of what tomorrow might bring. He likes going to tournaments and giving speeches a lot more than fighting evil monsters. He loves Knighton and will do anything to keep it safe. Even if it means letting his beloved daughter join the fight at the frontline.

Axl is the giant muscle man on the NEXO KNIGHTS team. When he swings his huge battle axe, enemies tremble and tumble. But an axe is not the only thing that Axl swings. He swings huge amounts of food into his mouth to soothe his never-ending hunger. He swings his electric lute on stage to let out the music in his heart. And he swings the controller in his attempts to beat Aaron at their newest video game. How does he swing everything so powerfully you ask? He works out and eats and eats and eats right.

Lance

Lance is a NEXO KNIGHTS hero and he likes defending the realm against monstrous attackers, but his heart really beats for fame. Since he was a little boys he has dreamed of being a celebrity with his own TV-show. After the defeat of Monstrox, his dream came true and he has his own show. So as dark clouds gather over Knighton and a new threat rises, Lance must search deep within himself and make a difficult choice: Am I a NEXO KNIGHTS hero or a celebu-knight?

Lancebot has the hardest job in town. Lance grew up rich, so he is used to everything being done for him. He has learned to appreciate Dennis more and not take him for granted all the time, but Lance is a Richmond and being spoiled is simply in his DNA. Dennis has quit before and been on the verge of short circuiting for years, so the question remains; will Dennis stay in Lance’s service?

Aaron is a thrill seeker, a record breaker and a care-free kind of guy. He takes life as it comes and tries to make the most of it. He is always trying to push the limits and see if he can go faster, higher or further. Or just beat Axl at a video game. Aaron loves to tour the kingdom in search of extreme sport records and break them, but breaking records is starting to feel like a broken record. Perhaps the next boundary Aaron must cross is not out there in Knighton, but within himself?

Nexo Knights is a fantasy-based Castle theme that was introduced in 2016 and ended in 2018. The theme is set on the realm of Knighton, and follows the adventures of five young Knights who battle to defend their home from Jestro, Monstrox, and his monster army.

The sets officially launched on January 2, 2016, although some of the sets came out as early in various stores as of late December 2015. Similar to the Ultra Agents, Nexo Knights features an app (now discontinued) that can be interacted by using physical LEGO pieces.

Like Ninjago and Legends of Chima, a TV series named Nexo Knights: The Animated Series was released on Cartoon Network on January 11, 2016, with a second season released on August 13 of the same year. A third and fourth season were released in 2017. In 2018, A fifth wave of sets was released and a fifth season was planned. However, the series was cancelled, the season was never released and the theme was discontinued.

Description

Nexo Knights is a fantasy-based Castle theme. Unlike its predecessors that contained typical medieval elements, usually with a fantasy theme, Nexo Knights gives those elements a futuristic look combining both technological and magical aspects. Like some previous castle themes, it features two factions, the heroes being the Knights, and the villains being magical evil creatures. The sets features Nexo powers that can be used on the Nexo Knights app.

Vehicles and structures used by the Nexo Knights features silver and blue as the primary colors and using orange for windows and holograms. The designs of the vehicles are based on medieval weapons, in the case of the main heroes the vehicles are based on their signature weapons.

In the case of the lava army, they feature brown as they primary color scheme with transparent orange bricks for the lava. The designs of the vehicles have monstrous aspects with white fangs and horns, and its weapons have lava designs.

The Ultimate armor sets includes one character with an exclusive design, and a set of accessories matching with the character's faction, and includes three Nexo Powers. Unlike Ninjago's Spinners or Chima's Speedorz, these powers are the first to feature in a video game linked to the show.

Story

Season 1

Just after the Knights Academy Graduation Ceremony, Jestro stole the Book of Monsters and attempted to destroy the kingdom. The 5 young graduates of the Academy; Clay, Lance, Macy, Aaron, and Axl will have to fight to save the kingdom. With the support of Merlok 2.0, Ava and Robin, the knights will go on a epic adventure.

Season 2

Even though the knights have managed to defeat Jestro and the Book of Monsters from the previous season, they have to find the Magic Books that were scattered across the kingdom before the bad guys could.

Season 3

It has been months since the destruction of the Book of Monsters. The knights have made lives for themselves. Clay is a teacher at Knighton Academy, Lance is a host for the Knighton News Network, Aaron is a stunt performer and Axl is a TV chef. On Princess Macy's part, she has been unsuccessful at getting each of the towns to be more defensive from future monster attacks. But all is not well. A storm is brewing over Knighton as Jestro tries to make amends with the people he has wronged to no avail. Monstrox has taken the form of a storm cloud and once again takes control of Jestro by zapping him with his evil lightning. Arriving at a fortress in Ghoulia, the Cloud of Monstrox raises an army of lightning-infused Stone Monsters. His first target is the new Lavalands Amusement Center that was established by Mr. Richmond on the property of the Lava Monster Army's former base. When Lance is overwhelmed by the Stone Monster Army, Merlok summons the rest of the knights. Meanwhile, Jestro and the Cloud of Monstrox go under the amusement park. When Jestro finds Monstrox's former Book of Monsters body, the Cloud of Monstrox tells him to hold onto it as he has grown attached to it. Jestro then uncover the staff that Monstrox used before he was split into different spellbooks.

Season 4

Jestro gains the idea to ambush the Fortrex in hopes of cheering up the Cloud of Monstrox unaware that the knights are at the party. Fortunately, Ava is able to restore Merlok 2.0 to the Fortrex and he is able to provide the Knighton Academy students with a Nexo power that allows them to fight back against the Stone Monster Army, forcing them to retreat (as they do not have the Cloud of Monstrox to reanimate them) much to the Cloud of Monstrox's amusement. Back at the party, Macy loses control Clay's battle suit forcing the Nexo Knights to pin it down. After the party, they reveal the truth about Clay to King and Queen Halbert and they agree not to mention it to the rest of the kingdom.

In the 2018 winter wave, Monstrox became a computer virus and sent tech infection monsters to attack the Realm of Knighton. No season of the television show was produced for this wave, because it was canceled.

Background

The adventure takes place in the medieval yet futuristic Kingdom of Knighton. It focuses on the Nexo Knights as they journey to defeat Jestro the evil jester, the Book of Monsters, and their lava monster army. Clay leads the Nexo Knights, which include Macy, Lance, Aaron, and Axl. Together, under their mentor Merlok 2.0, they band together to defeat Jestro! who becomes humbled and good again. Later, the evil cloud Monstrox comes and turns Jestro evil again by zapping Jestro with a lightning bolt that can turn anyone evil (or bring stone statues alive). Jestro and Monstrox then team up to fight the Nexo Knights again, this time with a stone army instead of lava. The Nexo Knights ultimately defeat Jestro, Monstrox and Ruina with Jestro becoming good once again.

The knights are getting ready to eat, but the monsters have infiltrated the Fortrex kitchen and attack. The knights start fighting them, but Axl just keeps eating. Until they destroy his food. Axl gets an upgrade from Merlok 2.0 and launches himself on a food fight rampage. When he is done he demands dessert.

Jestro the bad. the really, really bad!

After yet another defeat Jestro thinks back on his life and all he did before he became bad. We see him try to be a wizard, a knight and, of course, a jester. The Book of Monsters starts training Jestro in evil and they attack a village. The knights arrive to fight and soon have Jestro and the Book of Monsters on the run.

The LEGO® NEXO KNIGHTS™ theme introduced many exciting and useful new elements into the LEGO System in 2016 and this trend continues into 2017. Today we look at a highly unusual piece which is set to take your building into totally new dimensions, literally!

BrickLink are yet to name it and I haven't discovered TLG's official name for it [EDIT: their names are "Plate, Modified 6 x 6 Hexagonal with Pin Hole" and "Rotor , w/ 4.85 hole, No. 1" respectively] but in marketing materials it is referred to as the "Combo NEXO Power shield". They seem a little unsure of this mouthful of a name though, as the official Nexo Knights page also refers to it as the Combo Shield and Combo Plate. I'll call it the hexagonal plate (as my other idea, "Nexogon", is a tad too silly). The part number (a.k.a. Design ID) is 27255 and it comes in one colour, Medium Stone Grey [TLG]/Light Bluish Gray [BL], as Element ID 6173203.

Isn't it beautiful? Particularly the underside. It comes in the new Nexo Knights pocket money sub-theme called Battle Suits, and I will review the two sets that I bought in a separate post but the main thrust is: these are large shields held by mecha that can treble your fighting powers within the Nexo Knights app. Today, however, let's see what it can do to your building prowess in reality!

Fittingly, the hexagonal plate embraces three of what I call 'connection families' within the LEGO System: studs, 3.18s and Technic holes.

Most obviously, the hexagonal plate has an area of 2x2 studs on three of its edges, with the corresponding anti-studs on the undersides. There is additional space in the centre of the top so that Nexo powers can be attached, which I'll show in a moment.

The other three edges have a raised, chamfered design with a 3.18mm bar in the middle. Using pieces with clips, you can join hexagonal plates together, as shown here, which is the one used in the supplementary set from this sub-theme, 70372 Combo NEXO Powers.

The centre of the plate has a Technic pin hole. This descends form the underside for a distance equal to the height of two plates, as I will show later.

I won't examine the Technic connections in detail in this post, as I am no great Technic freak, but let's see what is possible with the stud and 3.18 connections.

Connecting via studs

As mentioned, the main intended purpose of the hexagonal plate is to host three Nexo powers, which are printed onto transparent pentagonal tiles (Design ID 22385) however I have opted for Medium Stone Grey ones in this photo as it is a lovely effect to see this in monotone, which highlights the chamfered edges of both pieces.

The pentagonal tile was introduced for Nexo Knights last year and has prven extremely popular with builders. You can see some innovative ideas from New Elementary's Nexo-Classic Space parts festival. It's great to see this part inspire another new part that is a pleasing extension of the pentagonal tile's geometry.

A similar effect is achieved using Design ID 3049, the "Slope 45 2 x 1 Double / Inverted" or "attic" slope, which is a shorter piece than the pentagonal tile. This left space for me to use another 45° roof slope (3043) to connect multiple hexagonal plates together. This looks like the beginning of something Blacktron, I think!

Connecting multiple hexagonal plates together is, of course, the very first thing you want to do and six is clearly an ideal number to use. Again, I think the underside is much prettier.. or should I say, more industrial. Oh, and a belated Merry Christmas, dear readers!

My next port of call was to examine how the hexagonal plate interacts with wedge pieces. The results were a little frustrating as no angles match perfectly. The 2x4 double wedge plate (51739) is really close but not quite, as you can see below.

You can't attach three of these underneath a hexagonal plate as the angled edge is fractionally too long. The nicest effect I achieved was reversing their direction to create the sort-of-nuclear symbol shape shown bottom left of the photos above.

You may have noticed that the underside of the hexagonal plate does not have 'notches', presumably because these reduce the aesthetics of an element. When wedge plates first appeared in the 1970s they didn't have notches but did get them in later iterations of the designs, which improves the functionality of the parts. Without notches, the parts that can be attached underneath a hexagonal plate are limited to those with two studs on the end. An example that may be useful should you wish to expand a hexagonal plate for a larger build is the 4x9 double wedge plate (14189 or the old version without notches 2413), shown below.

Of course you can already achieve triangular or hexagonal structures in LEGO building using hinges, so what fun can you have combining hexagonal plates and hinges? Here are a couple of ideas.

As mentioned, the descending section of the Technic hole is the height of two plates, so you can stack hexagon plates either by putting two plates in between them (as shown below) or simply connecting with a Technic pin, which would provide the additional possibility of rotation.

Connecting via bars

Now to examine some of the 3.18 connection possibilities, and we will start small by trying out some decorative parts with clips.

Roadsigns proved very pleasing and I combined the three square ones with three 2x2 tiles.

This worked even better when combining round roadsigns and round 2x2 tiles, shown here in White: a perfect fit and the tops of the roadsigns and tiles all end up at the same level too!

Triangular roadsigns were, surprisingly, less satisfying as the position of the clip means they can't point into the centre of the hexagonal plate. Using just two, aligned in different directions, could be useful though.

I won't show you all the clipped parts I tried but believe me there is a lot of fun to be had trying them out. However I did feel the one above is worth sharing; "Panel 3 x 5 Solar/Clip-On/Deltoid" (Design ID 30034) from the Exploriens theme in 1996. Despite being hexagonal its geometry isn't especially compatible with the hexagonal plate but they undoubtedly look beautiful when combined, and very Spacey indeed.

As mentioned, the 70372 Combo NEXO Powers set comes with pieces to connect hexagonal plates together using plates with clips, tiles and boat studs. Quickly you can imagine interesting Spacey flooring or walkways.

Again, connecting six together is satisfying and beautiful. Widening the connecting sections to four studs creates a dodecagonal hole.

I was surprised that this hole is eight studs in diameter, although perhaps the tolerance afforded by the clip connections is permitting this, which might make it an illegal connection by TLG standards. Maybe the mathematicians among you could figure that out for me. Anyway, I was able to do it and to add parts to create a tight 8x8 round circle in the middle. [EDIT: Reader Bfa did the maths, and Mecabrick designed it digitally. Both agree this is legal and intentional. Yay!]

3D LEGO Polyhedra

Let's move away from two dimensions now, as the hexagonal plate offers thrilling three-dimensional building opportunities.

Building with four Combo Nexo Power Shield triangular plates

Indeed, 3D building is encouraged by TLG. The leaflet inside 70372 Combo NEXO Powers shows that you can combine multiple copies of this set to create the exciting shape shown here, which I think would be called a truncated octahedron if all its sides were solid. If the connecting sections are 4x4 instead of 2x2, there should be space to attach a further four hexagonal plates in the gaps somehow, but I haven't tried this yet.

The leaflet erroneously states you need six to create this model however only four are required; an easy mistake to have made. [EDIT: the mistake is mine! You do require six booster packs to build this model; while you only need four of the hexagonal plates, you need six connections between the four plates, for which you need 12 of the 1x2 plates with clip (Design ID 11476) and two are provided in each pack. Thanks to Brainslugged for pointing this out.]

You can make some more complex irregular forms with six of the hexagon plates however the real fun is when you own eight of them, which is the number I purchased.

Building with eight Combo Nexo Power Shield triangular plates

With eight hexagonal plates I was able to create this shape comprised of hexagons, rectangles and octagons. Filling in the octagonal face proved a little tricky and this clumsy arrangement was my best effort before moving on.

I moved my attentions away from the 3.18 connector and instead used hinges to attach hexagonal plates via stud connections. A bar/clip hinge probably would have been best to use but I have lost my box of these parts! Surprisingly, "click hinges" - which can only be angled at fixed increments of 22.5° - worked out just fine and indeed provided for more stable models, which I was even able to roll like giant Dungeons & Dragons dice.

Again, these represent truncated octahedrons and there are a variety of ways to connect these pieces. The photo above left has the hexagonal plates underneath the hinges whereas above centre they are above the hinges. Above right, all pieces have been reversed to expose those lovely undersides.

In the photos above I have expanded the form by one stud. This brings the shape closer to a perfect cuboctahedron, which I have tried to emphasise by pointing pentagonal tiles outwards. I could not find a way to fill in the 'square' faces of any of the above, but surely there is a way - certainly if you keep expanding the form.

And so I kept expanding. You don't have to expand every edge uniformly; indeed just expanding half of them created this intriguing form. At this distance I found I was able to use the 3.18 bars to connect the gaps by adding clips to eight-long plates (below).

The other faces could be filled in with wedge plates. This is just an initial experiment to inspire you - I am certain the possibilities are just as infinite as your imagination and LEGO!

Further exploration

With more than the eight hexagonal plates that I currently own, the opportunities will increase.

These five plates are the beginning of a truncated icosidodecahedron, for which I will need 20 hexagonal plates (and to locate my lost bar/clip hinges instead of using click hinges, I suspect).

Other more complex and beautiful geometric forms will be possible, as the below image suggests.

And of course you don't need to stick to 'solids' - the hexagonal plate offers any manner of strange and wonderful shapes, as shown above.
