LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues is a 2009 video game developed by Traveller's Tales and published by LucasArts. The game was released on November 17, 2009 for the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable and Windows PC.

The Mac OS X version of the game was released by Feral Interactive on 16 May 2011. [1] There was going to be a PlayStation 2 release of the game, but it got cancelled most likely due to the system losing its popularity.

The levels from the original game are tweaked, and new ones have been added, e.g. the Shanghai car chase from The Temple of Doom.

Contents

Overview

The game allows gamers to play a "tongue-in-cheek take on all four cinematic adventures," [2] including the latest film in the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which was not included in the previous game. The gameplay will consist of the same drop in/out co-op play as all of the previous game, but will have a split screen function, which will appear when one character goes off screen, and disappear when the character gets closer to the second one. Another new feature is the level builder, were you can make your own adventures by creating levels and linking them in a chain. This feature though was only used once more in Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 before it was removed in all future Lego video games afterwards. The main process is to choose environments, and place various levers, push boxes, buttons and weight plates and link them by a red line to traps and mechanisms, with the line disappearing once the level is being played. Props, such as tents, boxes, statues and plants, and enemies and bosses such as guards and spiders can be placed, as well as water, lava, and quicksand. There are new level hubs, but instead of one, like Barnett College in the first, there are one for each of the movies.

Accuracy

The game is less accurate to the original and the Crystal Skull movies, because the story line put into the game doesn't consist of what had happened in the movies; this includes several monster boss battles, monkeys stealing the sunstones, Indiana Jones being ambushed by Russians aboard a train, Oxley being kidnapped by the Ugha, and the Well of Souls being directly underneath the maproom.

Layout

Each movie contains two puzzle levels, one involving a boss, a vehicle chase, a brawl, and a giant boss battle. Each level is only one room long. Most of the game's boastings are about the level builder, split screen, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Drawbacks

This game, however, includes some disabilities including being unable to view cutscenes when not in levels, lack of secrets in the main levels, returning to hub after each level, few characters and customizable parts, five levels instead of six for a movie, and also shorter levels. After completing a level, players would return to the hub and the entrance to next level would be discovered, sometimes involving a character unlocked in a level. Also, after beating a story level, a treasure mode replacing free play becomes available, where the players would need two different characters to pass a puzzle and retrieve an artifact. Artifacts can be found in bonus levels. After collecting all ten artifacts, a super bonus city level would be unlocked.

Enemy Soldier (Desert)
Ability: Security Clearance Equipment: Pistol Cost: 15,000 studs
When you finish the 3rd Story Level, a pair of soldiers on horseback appear. Use Indy's whip to lasso each soldier as he rides past and pull him down (as shown in the intro for the next Story Level). When you've defeated both mounted soldiers, several soldiers on foot attack. Fight them and you'll be able to unlock the character.

Enemy Officer (Desert)
Ability: Security Clearance Equipment: Grenades Cost: 25,000 studs
When you first enter the fenced area on the big island, a squad of these officers attacks. After fighting them, you'll be able to unlock the last one. Note that you can't get behind the fence until you've completed all the Story Levels. See the Bonus Level 2 intro for details.

Bazooka Trooper (Raiders)
Ability: Security Clearance Equipment: Bazooka Cost: 30,000 studs
After beating the Jeep Race (see Races & Challenges), this character appears at the foot of the stairs leading up to Marion's bar. Hit him a few times and you'll have the opportunity to unlock him.

Bandit Swordsman
Ability: None Equipment: Sword Cost: 27,000 studs
When you beat the Camel Race (see Races & Challenges), the swordsman appears near the camel pen ready to fight your characters. You'll need a character with a sword to beat him. So switch to the Masked Bandit, who can be found near the marketplace entrance. Once you've disarmed and defeated the swordsman, you can then unlock him.

Hovitos Tribesman
Ability: None Equipment: Spear Cost: 30,000 studs
After beating the Hovitos Temple Bonus Level, a group of tribesmen emerge from the level entrance. Fight them and you'll have the opportunity to unlock the character.

Ability: Excavate Equipment: Shovel Cost: 25,000 studs

Beating the Flying Wing Balloon Challenge (see Races & Challenges) unlocks this character. He appears near the Flying Wing landing strip.

Major Toht
Ability: None Equipment: Machine Gun Cost: 50,000 studs
When you've beaten the 4th Story Level, After the Ark, return to the snowy island to find a big snowman on the ledge below Marion's bar. Place its wooden arms on the green plate and use the bits to build a campfire. Use the torch at the top of the stairs to light the campfire. This melts the snowman and Major Toht appears. Fight him and you can unlock him.

IMPORTANT BUG WARNING: If you take the torch from the holder at the top of the stairs and then exit the level (either by quitting the game or entering a story or treasure level), the torch may disappear forever, preventing you from unlocking Major Toht. To avoid this glitch, just be sure not to grab the torch until you've built the campfire and are ready to light it. As far as I know, there is no fix for this issue except to restart the game.

Colonel Dietrich
Ability: Security Clearance Equipment: Bazooka Cost: 75,000 studs
After beating the last Story Level, return to the island with that level entrance. Smash the brown crate and use the red-and-blue bits to build a contraption with a button. Step on the button to inflate a minifigure of the colonel. Fight him and you can then unlock him.

Belloq (Priest)
Ability: None Equipment: Staff of Ra Cost: 500,000 studs
After beating the last Story Level, return to the island where you entered that level. There you'll find the bits to build Belloq's minifigure. (You can see the bits in the background of the screenshot for Colonel Dietrich, below.) Put Belloq together, fight him, and you'll have the opportunity to buy him.

Coronado Sailor

After completing the 1st Story Level, head for the beach at the lower right corner of the Venice neighborhood. Swim out to the small island near the ship with the entrance to the First Level. Enemy Soldier (Machine Gun)
Ability: Security Clearance Equipment: Machine Gun Cost: 20,000 studs
When you complete the 4th Story Level, a squad of enemy machine gunners emerges from the level entrance (the carved facade where the tank was stuck earlier). Defeat them all and you'll be able to buy this character.

Librarian
Ability: None Equipment: None Cost: 20,000 studs
This character appears near the Venice Library Bonus Level entrance when you beat the Speedboat Race (see Races & Other Challenges). You'd think a librarian would have the Academic ability, but apparently this one does not.

Beating the Camel Race unlocks this character (see Races & Other Challenges). He appears near the camel pen.

Enemy Pilot

LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues Characters

LEGO Indiana Jones 2 includes 82 unlockable characters. The game also lets you make your own customized characters using the Character Creator. Unlike LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, this game has no secret characters.

When you first open each playset you'll control Indiana Jones and one other character. As you progress through the game, you'll unlock new characters. Some cost nothing and simply appear on the hub map alongside Indy. Some characters must be bought with studs or won by beating vehicle races or other challenges before they can be used.

All of the characters you've unlocked so far are shown on the Playset Menu as well as on the Pause Menu in each hub. For details about where each character can be found, see the Characters section of each hub walkthrough.

You'll nearly always control two characters at a time. In a single-player game, you can switch between characters by pressing the Free Tag button. In a co-op game, one player controls each character. Player 2 can join or drop out at any time, even in the middle of a level. (See Controls and Menus.)

Character choice varies by level type:

  • In each story's hub map, you can switch among all the characters you've unlocked so far. Just have the character you're currently controlling approach any other playable character and press Free Tag. characters are assigned automatically when you enter the level and make sense according to the plot. let you choose which characters to use. They often require characters with special equipment or abilities, which you may not have right away. If you enter a Treasure Level and see a message on screen saying you need different characters, just exit and return later once you've unlocked them. levels automatically give you the characters you'll need.

Some characters have special tools or abilities that allow them to do things other characters can't. Unlocking characters with a variety of skills and equipment will enable you to reach new areas on the hub maps, complete certain levels and also have more fun. After all, who wouldn't want the chance to play as a favorite movie hero or villain?

The special abilities are as follows:

  • Academic – Characters with this ability can solve hieroglyph puzzles which open certain doors. You can recognize these people by the brown books they carry.
  • Excavate – Characters with this ability always carry a shovel. They can dig in the ground to unearth buried objects. Some levels include shovels that any character can pick up. Spots that can be excavated are indicated by sparkles on the ground. When you see one of these areas, stand near it holding a shovel and press the Use button to dig.
  • High Jump/Super Jump – All female characters have the ability to jump higher than their male counterparts. In a few areas, trampolines and awnings allow any character to reach higher areas, but women are always better jumpers. A swirling flower marker on the ground means a high jump is necessary.
  • Repair – Characters with this ability carry a wrench all the time. They can use it as a weapon, but it also comes in handy for fixing broken machines. Other characters can gain this ability temporarily by finding and picking up a wrench. Then just approach a machine with smoke and sparks coming out of it and press the Use button.
  • Repel Insects – This ability can only be used by a character who possesses the crystal skull, which wards off swarms of ants, scorpions or other critters.
  • Security Clearance – Certain areas can only be entered by uniformed soldiers. When a character with this ability approaches a guard post and knocks, he will be allowed inside.
  • Small Size – A few characters are able to fit through special hatches due to their tiny size. There is no way for larger characters to use this ability.
  • Thuggee Chant – In the Temple of Doom levels, you'll encounter various cultists known as Thuggees. They have the ability to activate Kali statues in order to open secret doors and such.
  • Weapons – While not exactly a special ability, some characters carry particular weapons that not only make them better in combat but also help solve puzzles and reach new areas. For example, pistols can be used to shoot targets; swords can cut ropes and cables; bazookas and grenades can destroy shiny, silver objects; spears can sometimes be poked into walls and used to climb, and so on. Many levels include weapons that any character can pick up.

"Why'd it have to be snakes?" Certain characters have fears that prevent them from entering particular areas. For example, as anyone who's seen the movies knows, Indiana Jones is afraid of snakes, Mutt Williams and Willie Scott are creeped out by bugs. When you come to an infested area, find a flaming torch to clear the critters from your path, use a different character to hit them, or find another way around.

One of the game's unlockable Extras is the "Fearless" special ability. When turned on, all characters' phobias vanish.

As you play through each story, you'll notice that the main characters' outfits will sometimes change, but there is only one unlockable version of each character in each story. For example, although Indy wears his desert and army disguses at various points during Raiders of the Lost Ark, the only unlockable Indy in that story is the one with the Fedora hat and leather jacket. Also, there is no way to switch outfits except by playing through a story.

The Creator playset includes a Character Creator tool to make customized LEGO minifigures with the features, weapons and accessories you want. Unfortunately you can't take custom characters into the other playsets, but you can use them in any of the levels you create yourself. For details, see the Character Creator page.

Custom LEGO Characters

Here is a list of all 82 available characters. It includes each character's name, weapon or equipment (if any), special ability (if any), the playset in which they are unlocked and their cost in studs. If a character is unlocked for free following the Story Level in which they appear, the cost column says "Story". More details about each character can be found on the Characters page for the hub in which he or she appears.
