Like some work of over-stimulated fanfiction with a Tony Stark-size budget, this plays out with all the excess, in-jokes and idiocy that entails. Wonderful.

Marvel Super Heroes is the latest, possibly greatest, in the revered LEGO games franchise. The Wii U's exclusive benefit of each player having their own screen is a big deal, but this is a fun game regardless of the platform you play it on.

The LEGO series sticks to its formula of accessible puzzles, gags and simple gameplay mechanics. While this coherence is overall positive, it’s not improving where it should. Nonetheless, the overwhelming presence of the Marvel universe and the amount of unlockable content are well enough for LEGO Marvel Super Heroes to please the fans of both the comic and the game series alike.

If you have kids and they love any of the Marvel superheroes, I could definitely recommend this game to them. Otherwise, you can le’go of any hope that this game could be enjoyable.

I have played almost While playing Lego Marvel Superheroes 2, I was fondly reminded of just how fantastic this entry in the Lego series is. I have played almost all the entries in the Lego series since the DS and none of them created a game experience quite like this. My absolute favorite thing is just the massive scale of the open world. There's nothing quite like it, even in games like Skyrim or GTAV. The amount of collectables there are is insane and it doesn't feel tedious until you've done most of them. There are a huge amount of characters, vehicles and more. The developers even created things in the environment to interact with to make the game even better, like passing trains you can ride, NPC's spouting random dialogue to you and more. The level of enjoyment I got from playing this game was very high. The story missions gave us a more interesting storyline than previous entries which led me to find myself actually involved in the story. The vast amount of abilities you can use is comparable with other Lego games, but does not lack in the slightest. One thing that makes this game even better on Wii-U than any other platform is definitely the fact that one person can play on the TV while one is on the gamepad. This can make for some fun matches of hide-and-seek in the massive Manhattan setting that you just won't get on the PS4. Aside from this, the dialogue is hilarious both in story and free-roam. Also, the soundtrack that plays while you are in the open world is simple, catchy and enjoyable to listen to. Some cheat codes also unlock quirky modifications to appearance and gameplay that can be enjoyable. The only con I would have to give this game is the amount of bugs you'll find scattered in certain levels, but this doesn't render the game unplayable, as it often is just funny to watch. I have put countless hours into this game and still never explored everything or completed every collectable. I highly recommend this masterpiece of a game; despite being marketed to kids, I think adults like myself will find it just as enjoyable. … Expand

The game has a fascinating and captivating plot, especially for game aimed at young audiences. It has an authentic Marvel feel to it, while still remaining humorous. I enjoyed it immensely.

The gameplay is typical for a LEGO game. It gets buton mashy, but powers such as laser vision or flight help break that. The bosses are fun, albeit simple. I greatly enjoyed the many embodiments encountered through the game, from Island M to Castle Doom. One disappointment was, despite the many big-figs they're all generic copies.

Voice acting may come as a disappointment to some. After becoming used to Downey Jr providing Iron Man's voice, it is jarring to hear someone else do it. However, Coulson retains his voice and Stan Lee cameos.

Graphics look wonderful, and far prettier then in LEGO Batman 2. The gameplay takes place during the day, allowing you to see the world's many colors clearly.

This game also encourages co-op and with a huge open world there is plenty to do. I can spend hours simply wandering through LEGO New York City. Many sidequests are available, and with 150+ characters you'll be coming back for more.

This is a great family game for both parent and child alike! I would definitely recommend this game. … Expand

This review contains spoilers , click expand to view . I love this game, but have to confess that I seen a lot of glitches already. That aside, TT improved the open world format tons between Batman 2 and Lego City. Marvel Super Heros refines it even a tiny bit more by removing the scanner aspect which was frustrating because you have to get up and turn around at times. Another criticism is that the 2nd chapter of LMSH was a bit of a re-hash of Lego City, but that's understandable because only Wii u owners have seen Lego city. Some of the other chapters I have played have been a lot more fresh, and enjoyable. The characters I've played so far have each added to the fun. I like this lineup of characters so much better than Lego City which had wayyy too many generic characters that looked different, but didn't have enough personality to justify their existence. The humor is good in this game as well. Loved seeing Abomination sleeping with a Teddy, and when Magneto dismantles Iron Man's armor there's Stark in boxers with big red hearts. Good stuff.

I will say I think there is a really good reason to want to play this game on Wii u vs other consoles. I'm not a big fan of the Game Pad, but I love one aspect of it. No split screen!! The split screen makes me insane in 2 player mode. I prefer to play on the Gamepad while my son watches the TV, and never do we need to watch the screen split then fuse back together. It's heaven. … Expand

I've always seen Lego video games as inoffensive little diversions that didn't really deserve my attention in a big way. Last year, everything I've always seen Lego video games as inoffensive little diversions that didn't really deserve my attention in a big way. Last year, everything changed when I played the fantastic Wii U exclusive Lego City Undercover, which is not only the epitome of the Lego series in my opinion, but also one of my favorite titles on the console's entire library. Of course, this also means that Undercover will forever be a point of comparison for newer Lego games I play in, and in the case of Marvel Super Heroes, the comparison isn't flattering.

The game's general structure is pretty much what you'd expect from a Lego game: it features loads of possible characters for you to unlock and play as, in this case, heroes and villains in the Marvel universe. Each character brings their own skillset to the table, allowing you to overcome challenges and solve puzzles. The traditionally tongue-in-cheek approach to storytelling is also present, and in this particular case it's a bit hit-or-miss. It did help me get into the "superhero" vibe, since, given the conceptual absurdity of costumed vigilantes combating crime, I tend to cringe a bit at all the grittiness and seriousness that permeate the genre these days. (Except for Batman. Batman is awesome.)

Like Undercover, Lego Marvel Super Heroes features an open world (in this case, a Lego version of New York City), but there are key differences. For starters, while in Undercover you were free to wander around from the get-go, LMSH tasks you with completing several mundane story quests (more on those later) before you get to the exploration part. And when the exploration finally comes, it suffers from poor pacing choices: you can simply become Iron Man and fly over almost the entire city the first time you ever set foot on it. This took away the sense of mystery and wonder I felt in Lego City, where protagonist Chase McCain's limited early exploration skillset kept me guessing about all those initially inaccessible rooftops and hidden spots.

The city itself is populated by citizens in need, who the heroes have to help in order to unlock collectibles. Most of these are merely fetch quests, however, resulting in boring gameplay. Other points of interest are the many unlockable characters and vehicles scattered around New York, often needing a specific hero's power to reach. Given that you're not free to change between heroes at will, it becomes hard to bother with going back to a changing spot, getting into a new skin, then going all the way back to the item to claim it. Overall, collectibles are handled in a quite unexciting way, which is a further blow to the game's exploration aspect.

Story missions, of course, are the other main part of the game, and here things go completely awry. They are boring, buggy, unimaginative romps through famous Marvel locations, featuring some extremely forced puzzle solutions. During one of the early missions, for example, I had to get the Hulk to the top of a small building. There was a platform that looked like an elevator (with the generic futurist design of every gadget, you're never sure), so I stood on it; nothing happened. I proceeded to scour the place for more hints on what I had to do, coming back to the elevator a few more times, all to no avail. When I was about to give up, I went back to the elevator one final time, stood on it again, and voilà: now it worked, just because. Thing is, the game has terrible prompt detection, resulting in situations like this one, or the many times it asked me to hit a button to activate a setting-based ability, only to prompt an entirely different ability when I did so.

On the plus side, Lego Marvel Super Heroes does offer a load of content, and this should be enough to keep you entertained for a long time if you can overlook the game's missteps. I openly admit I'm not the biggest super hero enthusiast in the block, but I'd be more than willing to dedicate long hours to this game if it weren't for all the bugs and poor level design. As is, this is a title better suited for die-hard Marvel fans or less demanding gamers.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Review - Screenshot 1 of 5

There was really no way to predict it so long ago, but the modern series of LEGO franchised games are undeniably great. When the first LEGO Star Wars game hit store shelves in 2005, it’s probably safe to assume that Traveller’s Tales didn’t foresee the growth that the franchise would go on to enjoy. Eight years and more than 10 games later, the LEGO series is still alive and doing incredibly well for itself. Showing no signs of slowing down, the latest — and arguably greatest — LEGO game to hit the scene is LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, a brand new adventure featuring the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, their greatest villains, and some other random pals who came along for the ride.

As mentioned before, there has recently been a whole mess of LEGO games released for a number of different consoles in a very short amount of time. The Wii U, a console that just recently celebrated its first birthday, is already home to three unique LEGO titles, including console exclusive LEGO City Undercover. The majority of these games have been based on various film and comic book franchises, borrowing characters and plots that lend to a distinct experience with each release. Situational differences taken into account, the fact is that all of these games provide a similar experience that doesn’t diverge too drastically from the established formula — even the sense of an open world is becoming common on home consoles. If you’ve played one LEGO game before, then you can expect to find incredibly similar gameplay here. The LEGO games are mostly about style over substance anyway, and Marvel Super Heroes is no exception to that rule.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Review - Screenshot 2 of 5

Reflective of its comic origins, the plot of LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is both over-the-top and wildly convoluted, taking characters from all ends of the Marvel universe and attempting to tie their stories together. In short, Silver Surfer’s board breaks apart into cosmic bricks. Realizing the power contained within, Dr. Doom, Loki and Magneto team up to collect the cosmic bricks in order to build a devastating weapon designed to take down the local super heroes. More twists and turns occur, forcing characters to visit strange locations and create unlikely team-ups, but we’ll kindly keep the rest spoiler-free. The plot may all be a bit much, but the comical styling of the LEGO franchise does its part to support the otherwise messy story by not taking itself too seriously, poking tongue-in-cheek jabs at the source material and always remaining self-aware. Whether it’s Tony Stark’s trademark snark or Nick Fury shouting a line from various Samuel L. Jackson films, the jokes are on-point and are guaranteed to have you laughing – assuming you’re savvy enough pick up on the countless pop culture references.

On par with the course for previous Lego titles, the controls are kept simple and intuitive, primarily utilizing the left stick and lettered buttons to move, attack, and use your character’s special power. The Wii U GamePad is used as the chief input method with options for a second player to join in with a Wii Remote and Nunchuk combination or a Wii U Pro Controller. Some awkward on-screen instructions might confuse players using the Wii Remote as the prompts to press certain buttons are specified to GamePad controls rather than the differing Remote layout, but it’s a minor complaint that is easily overcome by playing for a short amount of time and understanding which buttons perform particular actions. Instructional snafu aside, the controls remain welcoming and uncomplicated, perfect for gamers of any age to master and enjoy.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Review - Screenshot 3 of 5

The controls may revel in their simplicity, but the GamePad’s technology is far from utilized to its fullest potential. While exploring the Big Apple, the GamePad’s touchscreen can show an interactive mini map that allows you to set waypoints and make sure you’re heading in the right direction. During stages, however, the touchscreen is limited to merely displaying the characters that you have available in that particular area. Being able to accurately switch characters by tapping the screen is vastly superior to pressing the X button and fumbling through nearby figures until you’re in control of the one that you want, but that’s about the extent of it. The GamePad is used here to make basic mechanics more intuitive, but it doesn’t do much beyond that. The controller also supports off-screen play, allowing you to enjoy your adventure while a pushier housemate hogs the television. When playing with a partner, you also have the option of featuring one player on the television screen while the other is shown only on the GamePad’s small screen, a convenience that completely circumvents the necessity for traditional split-screen.

Realistically, the majority of gameplay in any LEGO game is repetitive button mashing combined with very basic puzzle solving. The gameplay may not be the most interesting or original, but that doesn’t detract from the sheer amount of fun that players of all ages are sure to have. Repeatedly tapping the Y button to smash through waves of baddies may sound like a chore, but it somehow manages to feel fresh with each passing stage. Each character also has special powers that are reflective of their comic origins. Wolverine, for example, can use his claws to dig up hidden objects while Spider-Man can shoot webs and climb along certain walls. Whether you’re firing optic blasts at your opponents as Cyclops or comically swinging them back-and-forth like a ragdoll as Hulk, there’s definitely some fun to be had by all.

Second Opinion

There were a lot of reasons to be a bit miffed about owning a Wii U, but LEGO Marvel Super Heroes wasn't one of them. With plenty of references and in-jokes for the comics crowd, but more than enough fun for the Marvelly-challenged, this take on the comic book genre is infinitely more welcoming than the sprawling mass of TV and movies that you have to watch in order to understand the Avengers films.

Although no game will ever take the title of "best LEGO game" away from LEGO Island, this is certainly the best modern LEGO game for me.

Not unlike LEGO Batman 2, Marvel Super Heroes features an open and explorable world set in New York City as well as 15 story stages in self-contained areas. The campaign can be played through in around 10 to 15 hours, but this is the type of game that thrives on replayability and its various side-quests scattered throughout NYC. The usual collectable minikits are located in stages, demanding at least a second play through of each in order to collect everything, and many LEGO bricks can be found in the open world, often rewarded for completing challenges. Challenges in NYC range from finding and retrieving an object that a random citizen may have lost to defeating a Sentinel that suddenly decided to terrorize the town. At one point while exploring the streets, Blade decided to challenge us to a race on Pizza Bikes. Why a superhero would feel the need to steal a Vespa and drive it in an underground street race is beyond us, but that doesn’t make it any less fun and hilarious.

Though the campaign may be considered short, extra missions unlock after its completion, expanding the LEGO Marvel universe and continuing to breathe new life into the game. While not spoiling some really great surprises for comic fans, we will say that the additional missions continue to delve into the absurd and tie nicely into some of the upcoming films. These extra missions, combined with the hundreds of collectables to be found and characters to unlock, ensure that this is the type of game from which you’re bound to receive countless hours of play.

Just like other games in the series, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes looks fantastic. We considered including a joke here about “blocky” graphics (it would have been a real knee-slapper too), but we decided to play this one straight instead. So much attention to detail isn’t obvious in the character models as they all look like LEGO minifigures or Big Figures anyway, but all of the environments, whether they be in stages or the open New York City, are beautifully rendered with lush surroundings that make each new locale feel unique. Rather than simply recycling settings and reskinning them to give the appearance of a brand new environment, the classic Marvel locations instead come to life and feel like they could have been adapted directly from the pages of a comic or film.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Review - Screenshot 4 of 5

The audio is similarly impressive to the visual presentation, but that’s not to say that it comes without its flaws. The orchestrated soundtrack is tremendous in scope and all of the game’s dialogue is fully voice acted, lending an additional layer to the already hilarious script, but the game is full of strange audio dips and raises that are more than a little distracting. It’s a bizarre issue to define, but LEGO Marvel Super Heroes seems to have some issues finding a balance in audio levels and maintaining them throughout. Sometimes character voices will suddenly drop in volume at the end of a spoken line, making the punch line inaudible, and other times a stage sound effect will suddenly blare out loud, drowning out everything else around it. These niggling issues may be far from game breaking, but they hint at a larger sloppiness that thankfully doesn’t rear its ugly head too often when playing through.

Conclusion

The LEGO series of games has always been focused much more on content rather than gameplay, and Marvel Super Heroes continues on in this tradition. As the games continue to expand outward rather than upward, longtime fans may start to see through the cracks and realize that what they’re being fed is little more than what they’ve been playing for years, but in a vastly larger and prettier package. The great news for players and the developers alike, however, is that the formula has remained true because it’s one that works. Don’t approach this one expecting a unique experience, but do appreciate it for its charms and accessibility.

If you’re looking for a fun way to unwind, relax, and have a laugh alone or with some friends, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is exactly the game to fulfill that need. It’s pure family-friendly fun that squeezes in just enough variety to ensure that players of all ages will find something to enjoy. A heroic feat, indeed.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes features an original story where players take control of Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Captain America, Wolverine and many more Marvel characters as they unite to stop Loki and a host of other Marvel villains from assembling a super-weapon capable of destroying the world.

LEGO Harry Potter.

Marvel LEGOcy

Ultimate Alliance.
