This quote chimes well with my idea of a perfect January - quiet days, spent gently and slowly. Of course life often has other ideas and usually throws up unexpected things to get in the way of peace and relaxation, but there have been some calm and relaxing moments in my January so far.

  • peaceful moments watching the skies at sunrise whilst sipping the first cup of tea of the day, January has the best sunrises,
  • calm moments spent reading and planning for the year ahead, I'm finding these books really helpful - 'Do Pause' and 'Do Breathe' books from the Do Book Company
  • some weekend morning gentle-paced knitting, accompanied by tea and toast and warm blankets and Volume 3 of Shetland Wool Adventures which is a lovely read,
  • and lots of quiet walks in the countryside, which is currently resting quietly under a wintry sparkle of frost.

I hope the new year so far has been kind to you and that you're finding comfort and calm in some of your favourite things this month too, J x

All I want for Christmas.

The two little animals above have been gifted to friends, the cards are all sent, the tree is up, the presents for the children are wrapped and the larder is full - I'm at last prepared for and looking forward to a few gentle-paced, family-based days. We have a quiet and simple Christmas here, centred around sharing time together, eating and relaxing. There's nothing I'm hoping for in the way of physical presents, but if my Christmas day includes some of the following then it will be a good one.

  • A crisp, frosty dawn with mother-of pearl coloured clouds high above the rising sun and the song of a robin heralding daybreak from the top of the plum tree as I give the hens their breakfast,
  • A cup of good coffee to warm my fingers after coming in from the cold,
  • Toby and Amy having a long lie in, so I can sit with my soulmate and spend a little time alone together,
  • Christmas carols on the stereo so I can sing along as I peel potatoes and prep for lunch,
  • Hoping that my roast potatoes get crispy and the turkey stays juicy and flavourful, so that I can show my family what they mean to me with a gift of good food,
  • An afternoon family film on the tv so we can all curl up together and feel nostalgic,
  • An evening cosying by the fire with a glass or two of something warming,
  • A bright moon floating in a clear sky studded with stars, so I can send up grateful thanks for a day well lived before heading off to a warm bed.

I'm signing off now but will see you in the new year, I hope your holidays bring you what you are hoping for and a little peace and pleasure and time with those you love most,

Christmas tree bears & a new friend

This year it seems to be proving harder than ever to get organised for Christmas. I had so many things on my to do list for this week but on Monday Toby developed some snuffles, and although he has no other symptoms and isn't unwell in himself I felt that keeping him home from college was the responsible thing to do because the current situation has us all feeling a little paranoid and extra sensitive to other peoples coughs and sneezes. Anyway, I'm going to be deleting a few of the less essential things from my list and what doesn't get done by friday will simply have to stay undone :)

And you can see all of the projects that others have made over the years (including lots of sweet adaptations) over on Ravelry.

Lastly, out in the garden I have a new friend. I am still missing Kit the fox and will never forget her frequent visits over the last 2 years, but the antics of this little squirrel definitely put a smile on my face. We've had plenty of squirrels in the garden before and they have all been typically skittish and wary, but this little chap is a very friendly character and follows me around the garden. I now have hazelnuts in my pocket whenever I go outside, and he politely takes each one in his little paws before scampering off to stash them somewhere - by now he must have the largest stash in the area!

Preparations

It always seems that early December is a time of mild panic, spent trying to remember things you've forgotten, making lists and losing them and trying to juggle far too many different tasks. Leastways, that's what it's like in our household. As usual I am woefully behind in ticking off things on my 'to-do for Christmas' list but I have made a little progress this week with finishing off some animals for family and friends. And as an antidote to my chaotic Christmas preparations I've been taking myself off to the woods regularly - just to have some time alone in this peaceful place is a precious thing and I always come home with more ordered thoughts in my head.

The first winter storms have already blown through, taking most of the remaining leaves from the trees and leaving rainbows in their wakes. Dramatic sunrises signal the arrival of the next bout of wet and windy weather, that old adage 'red sky at morning, shepherds take warning' really does work. With most of the trees bare the forest has a kind of stark, twiggy beauty and I love the way the low winter sunlight slants through the trunks, illuminating ferns with a golden glow and casting long shadows across the forest floor.

Next week I'm planning to work on an updated layout for my little free Christmas tree bears pattern. I'll pop back with news of that once a new version is ready to download - they only take a couple of hours to make so hopefully there will still be time to make one or two if you wish.

Out in the autumn woods

Temperatures have dropped a few notches here this week and out in the woods that has signalled the start of a co-ordinated leaf drop. As we've walked the woodland paths, great flurries of leaves have been whipped from the overhead branches and blown together to form deep drifts underfoot. Because there's been very little recent rain they're lovely and crisp and the most beautiful colours, from the light gold of silver birch, through the ochre tones of hornbeam, the copper of the sweet chestnut and burnished bronze of beech, to the dusty browns of the oaks. Toby is delighted. He kicks through the crisp leaves and uses his booted feet like small ploughs, leaving furrowed piles of leaves in his wake. Our walks take twice as long at this time of year, as he likes to double back and go through the deepest patches again. I love to see him so happy at such a simple pleasure, and we keep cosied up against the cold breezes with scarves and mittens, though we do arrive home again with wind-chilled cheeks and pinkened noses.

Throughout October and November I've been out in the woods on my own too, with just my camera for company and have had fun toadstool hunting. I thought that this might be a good year for them, but they've been a bit thin on the ground and I've not found any of the beautiful fairytale Amanitas at all this year. That's half of the fun though - never knowing what you might find around the next tree stump, and I never tire of looking.

Back at home in the warm I've been trying to sort through the mass of 'in progress' animals. So far I have 4 boxes full of bits and pieces and still have more bags to sort through. It's my mission to finish them off over the coming year and get them to new homes and I think I might have a few more giveaways over the next year. By the way, I'm still reading through all of the comments on the last giveaway - there were so many! Thank you so, so much for all of your kind words and for taking the time to comment and share what has made you happy recently - I will continue to enjoy reading through all of the comments in the coming weeks.

Well, I'm off to do a bit more sorting and to try and marry up various body parts of animals and try and remember what yarn I used so that I can make any missing pieces - not a way of working that I would recommend!

Have a good week and warmest best wishes to all my American friends for a happy Thanksgiving xx

An autumn giveaway

Back on September 3rd I celebrated my 15th blogging anniversary. In previous years (up until 2018) I have held a little celebratory giveaway of finished animals, but the last few years I've been so busy with writing patterns that I've not actually managed to fully finish many animals (I'll show you my rather large collection of unfinished ones another time).

To be honest I have deeply missed the joy of just making, because knitting samples for pattern development and step-by-step photos simply does not hold the same peaceful and relaxing pleasure. At heart I am a maker and making these two animals has given me the most knitting pleasure that I've felt for quite some time. I hope that they will also bring pleasure to their new owners, which brings me to announce a giveaway.

To win either this little black bear or grey rabbit all you need to do is leave a comment below.

You can write anything you like (just the word 'enter' is enough) but if you have time, I'd love to hear about something that has brought you some recent pleasure and enjoyment.

Your comment is automatically given a number and on Monday November 15th at 12 noon UK time I'll close the post to further comments and use a random number generator to pick two numbers from all of the entries.

The first number picked will be the first prize winner who will get to choose between the two animal prizes and the second number picked will win the remaining animal.

Here's a more detail description of the prizes:

The little black bear is knitted from Camarose Snefnug yarn in 7313 and comes with a pair of brown dungarees knitted from Krea deluxe organic cotton shade 53, a little cream blouse knitted in Krea deluxe organic cotton in shade 02, a light brown cardi knitted in hand dyed yarn from the Wool Barn, a scarf knitted in The Uncommon Thread Lush worsted yarn in 'Belle Epoch', a cream dress with knitted leaf design and two pairs of shoes; a light brown pair with eyelet detailing and a plain dark brown pair. The extra outfit will be packed in a little tin suitcase from Maileg.

The little grey bunny is knitted in 1 strand of Rowan Alpaca Classic in 'feather grey melange' held with 1 strand of Rowan Kidsilk haze and comes with a pair of brown dungarees knitted from Krea deluxe organic cotton in shade 53, a little cream blouse knitted in Krea deluxe organic cotton in shade 02, a light brown cardi knitted in hand dyed yarn from the Wool Barn, a red scarf knitted in Rowan kidsilk haze in 'ruby', a brown dress with embroidered toadstools and two pairs of shoes; a red pair with eyelet detailing and a plain brown pair. The extra outfit will be packed in a little tin suitcase from Maileg.

Wooden toadstools, pinecones etc. are not included and are just used in the pictures as props.

To recap: Leave a comment below to be in with a chance of winning one of these two animals and their assorted clothing (giveaway is now closed) . Giveaway closes at 12 noon on Monday 15th November.

This story was based on a true incident that happened in the summer of 2007 and was written and illustrated by a lovely lady who reads my blog called Jill. It was one of Amy’s favourite stories for quite a few years and I still love leafing through the bound copy of the story that Jill so kindly sent me.

If you’re sitting comfortably, then we’ll begin…

Jug_copy

Little Cotton rabbit was waiting. “Knit me! Knit me” she thought.
All the rabbits, bears, pandas and foxes hiding in the wool were excited.

Wool_copy

“Pick me! Pick me!” Little Cotton Rabbit wished so hard her nose began to twitch (which isn’t easy in the middle of a ball of wool!)

Socks

Julie began to knit. She knitted and knitted. Very, very soon Little Cotton Rabbit had ears, eyes, a nose and a very happy smile.

Feet

“Pink shoes! Pink shoes!” Little Cotton Rabbit wished so hard her toes began to tap (which isn’t easy when your shoes are being knitted!)

Bag

Julie put her clever fingers into the bag of wool.

“Dots! Dots! Polka dots!” wished Little Cotton Rabbit.

Very, very soon Little Cotton Rabbit dreams of pink shoes and a dotty dress came true!

Family

Little Cotton Rabbit sat with all the friends Julie had knitted. They waited. It was such a special day.

“Pick me! Pick me!” Little Cotton Rabbit thought. She sat very, very still (which isn’t easy when an adventure is about to begin!)

Littlecotton

Julie looked for a rabbit to send to America.

“Pick pink polka dots!” thought Little Cotton Rabbit, “with pink shoes!” She wished so hard her nose twitched and her toes tapped (which isn’t easy when you’re trying to sit still!)

Package

Julie wrapped Little Cotton Rabbit up in crinkly tissue paper and tied a beautiful bow with ribbons to keep Little Cotton Rabbit safe. Very, very carefully Little Cotton Rabbit was put into a white comfy parcel.

Sleep

Little Cotton Rabbit snuggled down in her crinkly package. She tried to be brave (which isn’t easy when your comfy parcel is being squashed with things called labels!)

Parcels

All the little cotton friends were ready for their adventures. Little woolly giggles snuffled from the parcels as Julie left them in the Post Office. Julie felt sad. So did all the little cotton friends. “Bye” said Julie and went home. Her fingers were itching to start knitting more Little Cotton friends.

Package2

Very, very soon, little woolly snores could be heard as the friends fell asleep. The Post Office worked hard to send all the parcels on their way.

Little Cotton Rabbit wasn’t asleep. What was America? What would it be like? Little Cotton Rabbit was very, very excited.

“Bye Julie” she said in a little woolly voice. Pink shoes, dotty dress, how happy Little Cotton Rabbit was (which is easy when you’ve been knitted with love!)

BUMP, BUMP. Little Cotton Rabbit tumbled down into the Post Van jumbled with boxes and parcels. Little woolly snores could still be heard if you listened very, very carefully.

Little Cotton Rabbit felt safe and happy (which isn’t easy when your nose is being squished by a box!)

It was very quiet now. Little Cotton Rabbit yawned a little woolly yawn. “Where am I? America is very, very quiet” she thought. She wished and wished Julie was there.

Pink shoes, dotty dress, all knitted with love. Little Cotton Rabbit was a little bit frightened. She’d never been anywhere so quiet! Little Cotton Rabbit tried to be brave (which isn’t easy when there are no woolly giggles, sniffles and snores to be heard!)

BANG. Doors opened. Little Cotton Rabbit’s parcel was bounced along. Noisy engines with smelly smoke made Little Cotton Rabbit cough a little woolly cough. America waited.

Friends

Very, very soon, little cotton friends began to send e-mails to Julie. They had all arrived safely. Nothing was heard from Little Cotton Rabbit.

It was very, very dark in the parcel. Lots of banging and shouting made Little Cotton Rabbit give a little woolly shiver. Inside the crinkly paper Julie had so carefully wrapped around Little Cotton Rabbit, a little woolly tear began.

Little Cotton rabbit tried to shout, “Help! Help!” but without her little cotton friends no one could hear her.

“I’m a brave Little Cotton Rabbit with pink shoes and a dotty dress and Julie loves me” whispered Little Cotton Rabbit (but it isn’t easy to be brave when a little cotton rabbit is all on its own!)

Shoes

Very, very far away in America the lady was waiting for Little Cotton Rabbit. She emailed Julie.

“Oh, no! Our Little Cotton Rabbit is lost!” said Julie to her children. It had never happened before. A lost little cotton rabbit!!

A new little cotton rabbit was soon on its way to America and the lady loved her.
Little Cotton Rabbit was all alone.

Sleep_2

“Pink shoes, dotty dress, I’m a brave Little Cotton Rabbit knitted with love” thought Little Cotton Rabbit (but she wished Julie was there to find her!)

BANG. Doors opened. Little Cotton Rabbit’s parcel was bounced along. Noisy engines with smelly smoke made Little Cotton Rabbit cough a little woolly cough.

Little Cotton Rabbit was lost. No one knew where she was. The lady in America was happy with her new little cotton rabbit. All Little Cotton Rabbit’s friends were happy in their new homes. Poor Little Cotton Rabbit. She shed a little woolly tear and gave a little woolly sniff. All alone.

Jam

Julie was busy. Making jam, watching a little mouse playing in the garden, playing in the sea with her children, jumping in the waves (but she often thought of Little Cotton Rabbit and hoped she was happy!)

Little Cotton Rabbit wasn’t happy. She dried her little woolly tears and said “Pink shoes, dotty dress, I’m a brave Little Cotton Rabbit knitted with love!” She tapped her toes and twitched her nose (which as you know isn’t easy wrapped up in crinkly paper and tied with ribbons)

A big woolly sneeze began in Little Cotton Rabbit’s twitching nose. “Ah, aah, AAAH TISHOO!” Little Cotton Rabbit’s parcel began to fall.

“Help!” she shouted through woolly sneezes and squished up nose. “Help!” she shouted through little woolly sobs and tears.

BUMP! BANG! Little Cotton Rabbit’s parcel fell to the floor. “OOOOHH!” whispered Little Cotton rabbit, who didn’t know what was happening.

Doors opened. Little Cotton Rabbit found herself flying through the air! BUMP! Into a post van jumbled with boxes and parcels. Noisy engines with smelly smoke made Little Cotton Rabbit cough a little woolly cough.

Little Cotton rabbit sighed a little woolly sigh. She snuggled into the crinkly paper, her eyes closed……

Faces

A big basket full of giggling little cotton friends. A hug from Amy, sounds of Toby playing in the garden. What a wonderful dream! Little Cotton Rabbit smiled a special Little Cotton Rabbit smile. Dreams were wonderful……………..

The Post Van went along the street.

BUMP! BUMP! BANG! Doors opened. Little Cotton Rabbit slept on.

Postie

KNOCK! KNOCK! on a door.

“OH! LOOK! It’s the lost parcel!”

Little Cotton Rabbit woke up. She was very excited! That was Julie’s voice! Julie opened the parcel and untied the paper and ribbons. There sat Little Cotton Rabbit with a very, very special Little Cotton Rabbit smile. She was a bit squashed, but safe and sound after all!

Shoes2

Little Cotton Rabbit tried to tell Julie all about being lost. Amy gave Little Cotton Rabbit a big hug, Toby could be heard playing in the garden (which just goes to show dreams do come true!)

Home

Julie took a picture of Little Cotton Rabbit. “Pink shoes, dotty dress, all knitted with love” thought Little Cotton Rabbit, glad to be safe. Lots of little cotton giggles came from a basket.

“Home” said Julie “no more adventures for you!”

Panda

Little Cotton Rabbit sighed a big woolly sigh. She smiled a special Little Cotton Rabbit smile. Adventure over! (For now!)

Summer has arrived. Here the month of June has the longest days of the year, and the countryside all around is at it's most green and pleasant so as there are only 2 more weeks until Toby finishes college for this year, I've been making the most of what free time I currently have. I'm getting out and about with my camera as much as possible, because although we'll walk every day over the long summer break together, walks with Toby are all about his needs rather than my wants, so we'll be going at the pace he dictates, along the route he chooses and he's really not keen on me stopping to take pictures of things.

For my solo adventure this last week I headed off to Panshanger Park. Though it's on the edge of Hertford town it feels like deep countryside, especially midday in the midweek, when there are few people there. Oh my, this place makes my soul sing, there's so much there to delight in.

wandering along the woodland paths, dappled with sunlight and cool green shade, listening to the small bird chatter in tree canopy overhead.

wading down through the open meadows, past the great gossamer globes of the goat's beard seed heads, swishing through the long grasses which move like the gentle swell of the sea in the breeze and buzz to the drone of bees, dragonflies and hoverflies and where the longhorn cattle go about their business of meditative munching.

squelching along the marshy margins of the lakes and the meandering river, where coots, ducks, swans and grebe all call out their warnings from nests hidden deep in the reeds and rushes.

The heat of the summer sun has not yet been with us long enough to have bleached the intense green from the leaves and everywhere there are flowers; exquisitely delicate lace of cow parsley, fragrant heads of elderflower, tiny flowers of deep periwinkle blue that glint in the verges along the path, daisies and buttercups and dog roses. I walk with a big smile on my face and a lightness in my heart that has been a little lacking of late.

Back at home I'm making plans for the autumn, which is when I'll have time to work properly again. I'm drawing up lists of the patterns that I'm planning to work on, and the tutorials that I'd like to share. As always these lists will probably be rather more ambitious than realistic, it's hard to factor in the limitations that caring for Toby brings and I forget that everything always seems to take twice as long as I'd imagined it would. I do however already have samples made for a blog post on the increases and decreases that I use in my patterns and their relative merits - I'm hoping to write that up and share it soon and as always I'll keep you posted on news of new patterns later in the year.

Well that's it until next time. I hope that you're able to find some of the same kind of joy that Panshanger brings to me sometime in your week ahead and that you've enjoyed seeing some of these pictures, thanks as always for visiting with me here, J x

PS: In my 3 hour wander I managed to take 443 photos! So these are the heavily edited highlights :)

New pattern news

Hello again, I still have to edit photos and write a post about how beautiful the bluebells have been this year but today I have news of three new patterns. These have been keeping me very busy all year and I've been very indecisive about almost every aspect, which is why they've taken me much longer than expected, though cramming my concentration time into the few hours that Toby is at college hasn't helped with speedy pattern writing progress. Still, they are at last done and as always I'm deeply grateful to my wonderful team of eagle-eyed test knitters who have helped me error check and test these out.

As always there are 2 versions of the animal:

  • There's a mole with knitted on tights/pantyhose and shoes, who has a removable dress. This pattern has 3 options for the dress, a colour-work design worked in stranded knitting technique with 2 colours and 2 options for a textured dress with a pattern made of small knitted knots.
  • And a mole with a naked body and feet who has removable shorts and a sweater. The pattern has 2 options for the sweater, either a sweater knitted in stocking stitch with 3 bands of colour or a textured sweater with a pattern made of small knitted knots.

There's also a new pattern for clothing to fit any of my 9 inch (23cm) tall animals and this contains 3 basic cardigan/jacket/coat shapes, a short waist length cardigan/jacket, a short waist length V neck cardigan and a longer length A line coat. The short cardigan/jacket and the longer A line coat can both be made with either a round neckline, a little ribbed collar or a hood. The hood will fit over the head of the animals with smaller ears such as the mole, monkey, cat and bear and for the animals with taller ears it looks nice just folded at the back and I've designed it with a curved bottom edge when it's worn in this way.

As always the patterns are available on Ravelry and Etsy and I'll be adding them to Lovecrafts , my facebook shop (which links you back to Etsy) and my blog shop shortly. I think Lucylocketland will soon have some of her sweet kits that include yarn and a printed copy of the pattern and if your local yarn shop is signed up to the Ravelry local yarn shop service then you can buy a copy from them and ask them to print it off for you.

Please remember that the above listed places are the only legitimate places that you can obtain copies of my patterns. In the last year pattern piracy has become a lot more common and me and my fellow pattern designers are noticing the impact, please don't support theft and pattern piracy by either uploading or downloading copies of patterns to/from websites that offer them in exchange for tokens. Thank you so much for supporting independent designers and allowing us to make a small living from our own work xxx
