We purchased the LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Great Hall Building Kit so our reviewer could put it to the test in her home. Keep reading for our full product review.

Venture down any toy aisle and you’ll immediately see just how many Harry Potter-themed products are out there. Kids can get their own wands, write in a replica of Tom Riddle’s diary, and practice their Quidditch skills with their very own Snitch. With so many options available today, we wanted to see if this super-sized LEGO kit would hit the mark for true Harry Potter fans. Read on to see if this kit truly brought the Hogwarts Great Hall to life.

Design: Sleek and spot-on

From the tiny turrets to the moveable spiral staircase, this kit did a wonderful job of recreating the famous fictional School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Devout Harry Potter readers will immediately notice that the design seems like it was plucked right from the pages of the books, featuring everything from floating candles to a fireplace.

An instruction manual offers step-by-step illustrations that were easy for our three kids—ages 6, 7, and 10—to follow as they constructed the four-level Great Hall. At a compact 14 inches tall and 11 inches deep, the finished product is the perfect size for displaying on a shelf or a bookcase.

Entertainment Value: You’ll get your money’s worth

It took our kids at least five hours over the course of several days to finish the castle. Throughout the build, we found that the set turned out to be a great conversation starter. The kids chatted about all things Harry Potter, recounting their favorite spells and the scariest scenes.

From the tiny turrets to the moveable spiral staircase, this kit did a wonderful job of recreating the famous fictional School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

But the fun didn’t stop when the last brick was placed: The kit includes an adorable set of minifigures in the form of some of Hogwarts’ most famous teachers and students, including Professor Albus Dumbledore, Hermione Granger, and, of course, Harry Potter himself. Our kids continued to play with the toy and animatedly reenacted their favorite scenes using these cute little characters. If you thought LEGOs were low-energy toys, this set surely proves you wrong.

Age Range: Better for older kids

Since our kids range in age from 5 to 10 years old, we felt like we got a great idea of how this set will work with different age groups. As we expected, our 10-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter were much better at following instructions and manipulating the tiny pieces than our 6-year-old. Since this is an advanced LEGO set and significant attention to detail is required, younger kids have the potential to get bored or frustrated without extra help from Mom or Dad. Keep that in mind if you’re looking for a hands-off toy that will keep the kids entertained while you sneak in some much-needed “me time.”

Ease of Cleaning: Beware of tiny pieces

Like most LEGO sets, this one comes with batches of bricks and other pieces separated into bags. In this case, there are 878 little bits divided among six bags. Pro tip: Keep them all sealed until you’ve progressed to the step requiring a certain bag. Our kids dumped all of the pieces onto a table at once, making it tough to find specific pieces and a challenge to ensure that none got lost.

Like all LEGO blocks, we found that these hard plastic bricks were easy to rinse clean in the event of sticky fingers or spilled drinks. They’re also a long-lasting choice for a child’s toy, since they’re tough to break.

Price: On the high end, but worth it

Retailing around $100, this set is among the priciest in the LEGO Harry Potter line. But in terms of how much time will go into building it—and then admiring and playing with the finished product—there’s no doubt you’ll get a return on your investment.

Competition: The Hogwarts set stands alone

LEGO has a handful of Harry Potter-themed sets at a variety of price points. If you’re seeking something more mid-range, the 753-piece LEGO Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Hogwarts Whomping Willow set retails around $70 and offers a pared-down model of the castle alongside a buildable tree with spinning branches and six minifigures. Or, for a starter set, go for the 157-piece Aragog’s Lair, complete with a model of the spooky spider with posable legs and moveable fangs (MSRP $14.99).

Granted, the lower the cost, the less detailed the set—and most can’t compare to the combination of fun and familiarity that the Great Hall model offers. And though this set does have a heftier price tag, at least it’s more wallet-friendly than the mother-of-all LEGO Harry Potter merch, this 6,020-piece model of Hogwarts Castle.

Yes, buy it.

If you have been looking for that big-ticket item for an upcoming birthday or special occasion, this is it. It really transports you to the wizarding world and keeps LEGO lovers invested and engaged for hours.

With the first wave of 2018’s Harry Potter sets retiring this year, let’s find out whether this iconic set is worth picking up before it is too late.

Two years ago, LEGO re-introduced the Harry Potter line. This is a great time to look back on this popular set so you can decide if you should add it to your collection before it’s retired.

From 2001 all the way to 2018. There have been four iterations of the Hogwarts Great Hall in LEGO.

The front and the back of the set are littered with details.

Bag 1 – The Mirror of Erised

The set comes with four reflections for the Mirror of Erised.

The mirror pieces included with this depict Professor Dumbledore with a pair of socks, Professor Quirrel with the Philosopher’s stone, Harry and his parents and Ron as Quidditch champion. Each of these mirrors are notable reflections seen in the movie and can be switched out whenever you like. Alongside the mirror are the animals that we build. These will be discussed in the animals section later. The final thing we build (if I can call it that as it is already built) is the boat. This uses a boat piece that I have not seen for a few years.

Bag 2 – The foundation

The first bag builds up the foundations and base of the Great Hall.

Bag 3 – So many windows

Moving to the third bag there is only one word I can use to describe what we build next. Windows. This set comes with 40 window frames and windows, something I have never seen so many of in one place. The colors used in the windows and window frames really contrast the lightness used in the castle walls making it aesthetically appeasing. Having been spoilt by the stained-glass windows in LEGO’s larger Hogwarts Castle set I was slightly disappointed to see that these windows were not stained.

Another word that can be used to describe this part of the build is repetition. In order to create the uniform look of the castle we repeat the same pillar and window build along the wall eight times, but in the end it is worth it. By mixing up colors between 5 Brick Yellow Tan and 38 Dark Orange , along with switching up the use of plain bricks and masonry bricks we get a very clear exterior wall toe the Great Hall. The slopes, whether upwards facing or downwards facing, give a very rustic and gothic feel to this castle. This look is very appealing to the eye and immediately we can see this forming into a nice display piece. this set is built in a way that should you decide to pick up a second copy of this set you can very easily extend the great hall to make it even bigger.

Windows, windows, windows. This set contains a large number of them.

When you look at what has been built from the inside, we can immediately see the effect that the walls and windows have on the interior. The interior feels very spacious and is well lit while still feeling dark at the same time. A very good metaphor for the Harry Potter franchise in general.

Bag 4 – Detailed arches and spines

After having not built figures for a bag we get back to it bag four. Alongside figures this bag focuses on detailing and begins to create the roof and entrance to the great hall. By using more slopes but this time in 194 Medium Stone Grey Light Bluish Gray we see even more contrast between the colors. I like how LEGO has moved away from the old 151 Sand Green color for the roof and opted for a more realistic looking color. Looking at the front we see small statues hidden in the arches beside the door and two grand big LEGO door pieces. Looking at the piece history we see that this piece in 192 Reddish Brown only exists in 11 sets to date so is a rare piece. I don’t think a better piece could have been chosen for this door however as this is the right piece for the build. Along the side of the wall we can see the 1×1 pyramid tile used to add yet more detail and sharpness to the structure. I am a big fan of the designer’s choice to make this set contain a lot of sharp edges, while at the same time using cylinders to smooth out other sections. This design choice is very deliberate but adds to make the features of the castle pop out at you while you build.

The pointed arches and spines give the castle a Gothic feel.

Bag 5 – A bountiful feast

Nearing to the end of the build we begin to add the finishing touches to the great hall. On the exterior we build up the roof using a now common plate and slopes technique. Unlike in the past where cheese slope pieces are used for roof tiling, we instead use a roof tile piece so that we have slopes on either side. This simple roof gets the job done while adding details. Unfortunately, the roof itself is a little flimsy while building it as we make use of two large plates but only secure it on one edge. Luckily once placed onto the structure this flimsiness does not really matter as the roof now rests on other parts. Adjacent to the Great Hall is the beginning of Dumbledore’s tower. This bag only builds the foundation of this tower but through use of the spiral staircase part we can start to see how figures can travel up to the classrooms in this tower.

The roof design allows for a very large and spacious interior of the Great Hall.

Turning to the interior we start to build up the banners and the floating candles. This set comes with two banners but four stickers so each of the houses can be represented by turning the banners around. While building I debated whether I should just place two stickers and order additional banner parts so that I can place all four in this scene but opted against it. Should you wish to display all four banners it is possible with some modification so keep that in mind before adding the stickers. Between the banners are the floating candles. To blend in with the ceiling dark pieces are used, and as seen in the images it really gives off the floating effect. It would be cool if the pieces used were transparent to sell the floating feeling, but since this piece is not in production, I am sure that small change would have driven the price up. The dollhouse effect of this castle makes it very easy to pose figures in the great hall, however part of me wants to pick up another copy of this set and modify it so that we have an additional windowed wall that we can slide open and closed to reveal the interior of the hall. Despite being scaled down, the Great Hall itself is very spacious and fits a wide variety of tables and chairs, a fireplace along with wall and ceiling decorations to give it a very cozy feel.

Bag 6 – Dumbledore’s Tower

The final finishing touches for this set come with the tower. The tower itself is four levels tall, yet only has one set of stairs to reach the first and second level so imagination is needed when wondering how the minifigures get higher. The same dollhouse effect of the Great Hall is employed here letting us see the potions room, artifact room and Dumbledore’s office in the upper levels of the tower. Dumbledore’s office is also a temporary resting place for the mirror of Erised. When placed in its holder it hides the inside of Dumbledore’s office and Fawkes the phoenix, something that might be for the better, but this can easily be removed to show the interior. As the walls use curved panel pieces there are minimal bricks used and thus detailing can be difficult. To get around this the designers make use of masonry stickers that are stuck on these panels to simulate brick. For all the detail that went into the Great Hall it is a shame that stickers were used here, however with cost in mind LEGO did the best they could to add details. What is brick built however is the rounded roof. The roof itself is creatively built, just like with other Harry Potter sets and makes use of slope pieces and angle tiles to give a curved effect that is detailed with roof tiles through use of studs, wedges and tiles.

A variety of classrooms are built in the tower that is adjacent to the great hall.

When it is all put together and filled with figures the great Hall is bustling with life and details. Yes, there are shortcoming in design decisions and repetition, but when we turn it around we can see that no matter what angle you look at this set from it is full of energy, detail and picturesque. Using the spare parts available in this set I created a mount that allows Nearly Headless Nick to fly above the students in the Great Hall and fit all the figures in for their great feast. The combination of sharp edges, spires, slopes, points and curves add a variety of detail to this set and really captures the look of a castle.

To add texture and keep costs lower the designers opted to print a variety of stickers rather than use printed parts in this set. The stickers in this set are mostly used for the Mirror of Erised, with an entire sheet being used just for this model. The remaining stickers in the set are used for banners or to add brick texture to the curved panels. The stickers used for the mirror are printed on glossy reflective sticker paper which creases easily so be careful when placing these stickers as you want to get it right the first time to avoid damage.

There are two sheets of stickers for this set. One of them is used entirely for one of the builds in the set.

Aside from the aesthetically appeasing structure a big stand out point of this set are the included minifigures. This set contains 10 minifigures. A large number despite being a large set. The figures are split into five students and five adults. The selection of figures is chosen carefully to include a large number of major characters from the movie, allowing us to have a full cast of important characters just by buying one set.

Of the included students we have the main three, Harry, Ron and Hermione along with Draco and a new character, Susan Bones. Each of these characters come in house sweaters colored appropriately for their houses. The Gryffindor sweater is a common piece used amongst many sets but the Slytherin and Hufflepuff sweater are unique to this set, making it difficult to make a lot of custom students as the prices will be high. The Ravenclaw sweater torso piece is not included in this set but was included in the collectible minifigure line. The figures each come with two faces so should you want to change their expression you simply need to turn their head around.

All the main four children are in this set, along with Susan Bones, the only figure to date with a Hufflepuff torso.

Alongside the main students this set contains four teachers and a ghost. These being Professor Dumbledore (portrayed by Richard Harris), Professor McGonagall, Hagrid, Professor Quirrel and the ghost of Nearly Headless Nick. As we can see, the selection of adults in this set is great, covering many of the main characters. The Hagrid figure included in this set makes use of a new mold to make the figure larger and unlike previous iterations the designers opted to go back to the traditional LEGO hands for Hagrid rather than using custom hands that included fingers. Funnily the Hagrid figure uses half sized minifigure legs to ensure his height is accurate, something that felt odd when putting together but works when done. The Quirrel minifigure in this set is a great upgrade over the only other version of this figure released in 2001, with a grotesque Voldemort as his alternate face. A very nice print that accurately captures the character. My favorite of the minifigures is the Nearly Headless Nick minifigure. Not only does this minifigure accurately capture the facial expressions of John Cleese, but the torso and legs are printed in a shiny silver color giving this figure a nice gloss. Each of the figures are printed both with front and back printing in intricate detail for their faces, legs and torso.

A wide vareity of desirable teachers are part of this set. Sadly it misses Snape.

For all the rave that is the structure and the minifigures the biggest downfall of this set in my opinion has to be the animals. This set comes with two molded animals: an owl and a rat, and two brick-built animals: a Basilisk and a Phoenix. Even though I don’t prefer the decision to switch to brick-built animals, the designers did their best to capture the essence of both creatures. This was probably done to keep costs low and to add an additional build experience within the set this set. Nonethess, they are disappointing compared to molded animals.

The set includes a variety of molded and brick-built animals.

The original molded Fawkes the Phoenix produced in 2002 still holds up well to date, however coming in at over $20 we may just need to settle with the brick-built rendition included in this set. If you think Fawkes the Phoenix looks out of place, you really won’t like the Basilisk. The segmented body, size and color look out of place in this set; I wouldn’t have recognize this as the Basilisk if it wasn’t explicitly called out to me. Just like with the 2002 version of Fawkes, the 2002 Basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets set also included a molded Basilisk that is much more recognizable. When compared side-by-side, the molded creatures are clearly superior.

I would have preferred removing the brick-built creatures and lowering the cost by $5-$10. The Basilisk is a particularly strange addition to this set as there is no Chamber of Secrets in sight. Instead, they should create a new Chamber of Secrets set, since we have not seen one in nearly two decades!

The figures included in this set are phenomenal and are a stand out part of this set aside from the build. Figures alone however cannot carry a LEGO set and where points are gained through its minifigures they are lost through the animals. The castle itself is very pretty on its exterior, however the build is somewhat repetitive. The inside is packed to the brim with details just like the outside but unfortunately the minifigures need to stand in the great hall which is a shame.

Factoring in price, minifigures, the castle and the brick-built animals I give this set our Recommended (4/5 star) rating. I highly recommend picking it up if you find it on sale, as the figures alone could make it worth it.

Молодые волшебники прибывают в Хогвартс на больших деревянных лодках (одна из таких включена в набор), останавливающихся у длинного причала с поросшими ряской камнями вокруг него. На причале гостей встречает великан Хагрид и, распахнув мощные дубовые двери, провожает их в большой зал Хогвартса.
Большой зал Хогвартса выглядит великолепно: по его краям расставлено четыре стола с различными лакомствами для учеников, а у восточной стены находится стол преподавателей, на котором красуется два золотых кубка. Под потолком зала подвешен раскидистый свечной светильник и два флага факультетов, которые вы можете заменить другими, входящими в комплект.
К залу Хогвартса примыкает немало разноразмерных башен с остроконечными шпилями. Главной из них является Мраморная башня Гриффиндора — место, в котором произошло немало значимых для сюжета книги и фильма событий.
Интерьер первого этажа башни составляют маленький столик с жёлтой лягушкой и подвешенная на стене швабра для мытья пола. Восьмиступенчатая лестница поднимет героев на второй этаж, где расположен кабинет зельеварения профессора Снейпа, сплошь и рядом обставленный различными котлами и колбочками. Третий этаж занимает кладовая комната. Здесь на высокой трости закреплена Распределяющая Шляпа, а рядом с ней, под небольшим окошком, стоит пыльный сундук, набитый драгоценными самородками. Говорят, что один из этих кристалликов — разыскиваемый Волан-де-Мортом Философский камень…
Этажом выше спрятано Зеркало Еиналеж (“Желание” наоборот), которое, как несложно понять из названия, показывает всем заплутавшим после отбоя мальчишкам и их учителям самые сокровенные желания сердца. Две сменные пластинки со стикерами предлагают такой выбор: Гарри со своими родителями, Рон в форме капитана сборной по квиддичу, Квирелл с украденным Философским камнем и… Дамблдор в обнимку с шерстяными носочками. Сразу за зеркалом, кстати, скрывается жёрдочка его верного феникса Фоукса, собранного из множества мелких деталей.
Феникс Фоукс — не единственный сборный зверёк набора. Где-то в подвалах Хогвартса скрывается ужасный Василиск, собранный на каркасе с шарнирными соединениями.

Для ещё более захватывающих приключений по Хогвартсу с Гарри Поттером и его друзьями рекомендуется докупить набор “Гремучая Ива” (75953), соединяющийся с основным зданием!

Гарри Поттер, как и четыре последующие фигурки, одет в школьную форму, состоящую из серого кардигана, галстука в расцветке герба факультета и чёрных брюк.
На лице Гарри, частично скрытом под густой шевелюрой, прорисованы круглые очки и шрам в виде молнии.
Аксессуаром Гарри, помимо волшебной палочки, можно считать ручную сову Хэдвига (Буклю), выполненную в виде цельной детали с уникальной расцветкой.

Рон Уизли
Торс и ноги Рона полностью идентичны торсу и ногам Гарри. Самым броским отличием является деталь волос (молд этой детали был создан для последней версии Люка Скайуокера в наборах LEGO “Star Wars”), впервые появившаяся в оранжевом цвете.
Лицо Рона усыпано множеством мелких веснушек. Его персональные аксессуары — ручная крыса Короста и волшебная палочка.

Гермиона Грейнджер
Очаровательная волшебница Гермиона тоже может похвастаться своей причёской: новый молд волнистых волос светло-каштанового цвета был отлит специально для неё!
Как и все сокурсники, носит с собой личную волшебную палочку.

Драко Малфой
Джемпер и галстук Драко отличается своей расцветкой с бело-зелёными вставками. Несложно догадаться, что аналогичную форму будут носить все студенты Слизерина в последующих наборах линейки.

Радует, что дизайнеры не забыли и о других факультетах! Эта рыжеволосая малышка, например, учится на Пуффендуе, у миссис Помоны Стебль.

Помимо волшебной палочки, вместе со Сьюзен вложена Распределяющая Шляпа.

Профессор Дамблдор
Седобородый профессор Альбус Дамблдор представлен в узорчатой бордовой одежде, показанной в первых двух фильмах о Гарри Потере.
Дамблдор носит седую бороду, спадающую практически до пояса, и волосы того же цвета.
Волшебная палочка прилагается.

Профессор МакГонагалл
Заместитель директора Хогвартса и декан Гриффиндора, Минерва МакГонагалл носит высокодетализированную робу тёмно-зелёного цвета и чёрную остроконечную шляпу с ремешком над полями.
На лице МакГонагалл прорисовано множество мелких морщин и тонкие седые брови.

Квиринус Квирелл — застенчивый профессор Хогвартса, преподающий студентам уроки по Защите от Тёмных искусств. Как оказалось позже, в своём “тихом омуте” Квирелл прятал немало злодейских помыслов и даже пытался украсть для Волан-де-Морта Философский камень из банка Гринготтс.
На голове Квиринус носит огромный фиолетовый тюрбан, под которым прячет чеснок от напугавшего его в молодости вампира.
На затылке Квирелла прорисована жуткая физиономия Лорда Волан-де-Морта, который вселился в молодого профессора во время его кругосветного путешествия.
Стоит ли снова упоминать о волшебной палочке?

Хагрид
Хагрид — лесничий и ключник школы волшебства Хогвартс. Очень обидно, что в новой волне нам не подарили хижину этого добродушного великана, но не стоит терять надежу на её появление в будущем.
Неудивительно, но новая версия Хагрида смотрится гораздо лучше, чем предыдущая. На монолитном элементе торса с подвижными руками и объёмными карманами прорисован распахнутый плащ, из под которого виднеется широкий кожаный пояс с серебристой бляхой.
Комбинированный элемент вьющихся волос и бороды выглядит не менее фантастически!
С собой Хагрид носит большой дозорный фонарь и розовый зонт.

Почти Безголовый Ник
В Мраморной башне Гриффиндора обитает немало чудных призраков, и самый известный из них — Почти Безголовый Ник. После сорока пяти ударов тупым топором по шее, голова бедняги так и осталась держаться на нескольких сантиметрах кожи…
Почти Безголовый Ник одет в роскошную серебристо-серую одежду с широким воротником и носит уникальную деталь волос в том же цвете.

В предыдущем обзоре поезд Хогвартс Экспресс помог нам добраться до Замка Хогвартс.
А сейчас мы познакомимся с Большим Залом Хогвартса.

В наборе 878 деталей, которые упакованы в 6 пакетов, инструкция и наклейки.

Инструкция как и в некоторых других больших наборах серии чуть короче А4 и чуть толще полсантиметра.

Замок собирается довольно быстро. Он прекрасен.
Выглядит потрясающе и величественно. Мы вернёмся к нему чуть позже.

Мини-человечки

10 фигурок! Самый большой комплект в серии LEGO Harry Potter 2018 года. И 9 фигурок на сегодняшний день являются уникальными.
Фигурка Гермионы встречается в наборах: [ 75953 ] и [ 75956 ].

Учащиеся.
На принтах торсиков фигурок школьная форма. Поэтому особых комментариев не будет.

Помните как всё начиналось?
Ученики-первогодки под руководством Хадрида сели в лодки и поплыли к Замку по озеру.

- Отличные минифигурки с которыми можно воспроизвести любимые эпизоды из книги или фильма.
- Шикарная здание Большого Зала с башней.
- Много новых деталей: решётки на окна, конусы (шпили), новые сырки (?), пирамидки, новые свечи и новые огоньки в свечах.
