LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins Image

It's basically a smaller version of the Wii U game, and that's about it. You're going to love it if it's your first time around LEGO City, but you might end up with a whole lot of deja-vu if you already played the previous adventure of Chase McCain.

The Chase Begins might have too many imperfections to be the standout masterwork its console big brother was, and given the choice, you should play that one rather than this one. But it’s still worth picking up and playing, especially if you love Lego, have younger children who need something to keep them busy in the car, or generally lean towards cute rather than blood-soaked.

LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins is an overly ambitious game that isn't as good as the home console edition.

While I appreciate the effort to put the open world of Lego City on the handheld, the technical and above all the gameplay reductions make me doubt that there is space for open worlds on mobile systems.

If you're a diehard LEGO fan, odds are you'll get some form of enjoyment out of The Chase Begins. For everyone else, you're better off skipping it entirely, or picking up the superior Wii U version of the game. It's one thing to pare down an experience on a portable: it's another to sacrifice its integrity in the process.

The Wii U game was just a few flaws short of a minor classic, but this joyless companion piece is only a couple more problems shy of a complete disaster.

This review contains spoilers , click expand to view . Lego City is a nice game in terms of what you get to do as a player, but the game has fatal flaws. The missions are too straight forward and easy to complete with no real puzzle or challenge, meaning- anyone can complete the game within a few days if they really wanted to. Combat with the criminals is lacking, you can easily overpower them while other oncoming criminals don't bother to attack unless you are not currently fighting anyone. Also, vehicle control is very fast-paced and difficult, leading to frequent crashes. Unlockables are too easy to obtain- some merely "hidden" on top of buildings or in a random box that you would destroy to get coins. I am not a fan of on-screen text with no voice because it is easy to miss the conversations of characters. Lastly, the loading time is ridiculously long and boring. Though it gives tips on game play, after a few loading screens, you won't need any more tips, and then you just wait. Overall, I find LEGO City Undercover as an intriguing game, with some downsides that limit a fun game play experience. … Expand

It ambitiously attempts to recreate the large open-world experience which was seen in the Wii U game and does so quite well. I do have a few complaints about the game however. The loading screens; they are few and far apart but when you do get them, they take entirely too long. The combat; all the combat is in this game is "press X to win" which I am not a fan of although I realize one of this game's primary demographics is children, so I can't get too upset about that. The vehicle controls; the vehicles in this game are rather wild, difficult to handle, and turn too abruptly which takes a while to adapt to. And finally, the disappointing lack of voice acting; The voice acting in the cut scenes of the game is very well done, but throughout the other 98% of the game when the characters are communicating there is only on-screen text and no voice which leaves the character interaction feeling somewhat empty. Other than those minor problems, Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins is a solid, extremely entertaining game if you are looking for some light-hearted humorous game time. … Expand

I'd have to say that while the game can be fun at times, the flow and fluidity of the fun is interrupted very often with long loading screens, low quality (quality itself) music, and lag present in most all areas. I've gotten through 12-15 missions so far (7 hours ish) and it's definitely going to require some willpower to finish. However, it's not exactly a bad game either, so if you're a lego fan looking for a good lego game - this one won't disappoint you too badly.

Maybe it was because LEGO City Undercover on the Wii U was I'm honestly not sure why I was expecting much when it came to The Chase Begins. Maybe it was because LEGO City Undercover on the Wii U was fantastic or something? I have no idea.

There's many problems with the game. First problem: the open world. I would rather the game not even try to recreate the vast city in the Wii U version because this one just. fails. The loading times are much longer here than they were in Undercover and the fog is pretty distracting. Because of the 3DS' capabilities, almost everything is either "under construction" or blocked off.

Second problem: the story. There are so many things in the Wii U version that are completely trashed here. Rex Fury using a lawn mower as his escape vehicle? He jumps onto a moving car here. Rex Fury getting arrested on a bridge? He gets arrested in front of a bank. Chase not knowing how to use a Color Gun? He knows how to here (keep in mind this is a prequel). There's just so much wrong with the story.

Third problem: dialogue. LEGO City Undercover had talking, why can't this one? The 3DS can handle it, just look at Kid Icarus: Uprising! It's a shame dialogue boxes had to even be put in here. Fourth problem: emotion. This is a problem every single handheld LEGO game has. You can never get emotionally involved. Apparently, the characters aren't getting emotionally involved either as their mouths never move outside of the cutscenes and they just use the same voice clips over and over.

Fifth problem: fun factor. LEGO City Undercover on the Wii U was a fun game. It was one of the most fun games I've played in years. Chase Begins take it all out, buries it in a hole somewhere, and makes it boring. Driving around the city is no longer fun. It is a series of loading times and fog in the distance. Sixth problem: music. All of the music is ripped from the console version and placed into this one. Also, there is no music unless you're fighting or driving.

Overall, LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins is only a game for gamers that are in denial that the Wii U version is better. Can we get the console LEGO team at TT Games working on handheld games, please? … Expand

LEGO City Undercover Image

If I had any complaint about Lego City Undercover, it'd be that it doesn't diverge too much (or, possibly, at all) from its original version on the Wii U. As I said up top, though, that means there are only about a dozen or so people who'll actually notice that. For everyone else, for whom this will be an entirely new, go out and grab this game ASAP, because it's well worth your time and money.

With such a fun story, great gameplay, and the ability to enjoy with a friend or relative, you’re never short of having a good time.

LEGO City Undercover is an original, hilarious, and action-packed adventure that provides ample freedom and endless activities. It is apparent, however, that despite its revolutionary features back in 2013, the remastered version shows that many elements need retooling to be on par with current LEGO video games.

Fine port for multiple formats of one of the best (but somehow ignored) action adventure games for the Wii U. Charming fun for one or two players.

LEGO City Undercover is a slap-happy LEGO GTA. This 2017 remaster of the 2014 Wii U exclusive now introduces the originally absent co-op play, while also jumping onto the Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Easily my favorite LEGO game in years.

This brand new version is undoubtedly the most recommended for everybody who wants to live an open world adventure in a LEGO environment. Playing in handheld mode is fun, but the frame rate problems are so heavy in certain moments.

It's easy to see why some would outright dismiss LEGO City Undercover purely on the basis of it being a LEGO game. The formula has gotten a bit too stale over the years, so if you're looking for something fresh in the LEGO universe, Chase McCain's adventure won't satisfy you. But if you're still interested in some brick hunting and cop action - and you can look past some awful load times - then LEGO City Undercover will serve you nicely. Its charm, humour, and open world nature was, for the most part, enough to win us over.

Warner Brothers and Traveller’s Tales bring us another action adventure game in their re-occurring Lego franchises, only this time it is a Warner Brothers and Traveller’s Tales bring us another action adventure game in their re-occurring Lego franchises, only this time it is a title that has been out for a while on the WIIU, but has been brought to us on the Playstation 4, Xbox one, Nintendo Switch and PC. Warner brothers and Traveller’s Tales presents Lego City Undercover.

Story: Lego City Undercover is an action adventure game where you take on the role of a police officer by the name of Chase Mccain, making his return to Lego City after being away for two years. Upon his return, he learns that the evilest criminal in Lego City (Rex Fury) has escaped from prison and has been infesting the city with crime. So now it is up to Chase Mccain and the Lego City Police to stop all the crime in Lego City, and take down Rex Fury. You begin by just doing work with the Lego City Police, but further down the line you go undercover to work for the cities most notorious crime bosses in order to get closer to take down Rex Fury.

Gameplay: Lego City UnderCover is an open world, action-adventure game. Think of it as Grand Theft Auto for kids and lego form, with less serious missions and cheesy one-liners and wonderful references to classic spy and cop shows like Starsky and Hutch, Mission Impossible 2 and Shaft. You have your main missions which are a lot of fun to do they are your typical puzzle solving, collecting as seen in previous Lego games, using your cop skills to take down enemy foes with kung fu and other hand to hand combat tactics, as well as free running as you traverse along the rooftops of Lego City. As you progress through the story you will unlock more outfits so you can complete special actions during main missions or are out traveling in Lego City. The main story in Lego City Undercover is one thing but there is more than enough to satisfy you in the side content section, from building super builds like call in points for vehicles, blowing up silver statues, collecting pigs and watering flowers around the city. Its all around a great experience when it comes to the gameplay.

Conclusion: Lego City Undercover delivers when it comes to quirkiness with its jokes and one-liners, the references to the cop and spy movies is a nice touch for someone my age, because I get them. The gameplay is some of the most fun I have had in a while when it comes to the open world genre I am glad to see it does not take itself to seriously. The only thing that really was not enjoyable about the game was a number of collectibles, I mean you don’t really need 450 gold bricks to collect that is a bit too much. None the less the game is still very much enjoyable.

Score 8.5/10
Good job Warner Brothers and Traveller’s Tales

But LEGO City Undercover is easily my favorite one to date
The charm and humor here is the best I’ve seen in a Lego game, which is surprising considering it features a unique cast of characters..
A few parodies thrown in there…
But there wasn’t 1 character I met throughout the journey that didn’t make me smile in one way or another…
I was in love with the first half of this 12 hour campaign…
You’re driving around the Lego city to each destination, stopping along your way to collect new costumes, or cars from doing time trials if you’d like… destroying and rebuilding during the campaign to complete tasks and find keys…
And slowly you’re introduced to different undercover identities…
This is where the games potential starts to shine, but it’s also where the game starts to fall apart…
There are 15 chapters in total here and the missions in these chapters are mixed between in city with car chases and climbing buildings and then there’s the sections of the game that are inside of buildings…
And this is where the game comes to a crawl.. Especially later on in the world.
For starters. this is where you have to deal with the slow and boring combat system of reversing, mashing the o button and throwing handcuffs on enemies..
It’s a little fun for a while, but gets old pretty fast…
At first I don’t mind these more puzzle platformer sections of the game.
They’re a break from the fairly small Lego world.
This stops that world from getting boring…
And it extends playtime as you’re switching through the different identities to throw different switches and break different items…
I’d get to some annoying spots where the game forces you to go collect a ridiculous amount of blocks to complete a super build, which isn’t too bad since there are special blocks usually pretty close and you can use your communicator to see them in the world so you have an idea of where to go..
But by time you unlock the color gun. .all of it becomes just so overwhelming…
The game doesn’t reserve 2 different characters for these levels.
which would’ve been much better
Instead they want to throw them all in. making you constantly switch through characters to make little progress only to have to switch back to another and another and another
The fire fighter and the color gun just became obnoxious…
The fire extinguisher hardly works and the paint sections are just time wasters…
Where sometimes it isn’t even about changing the color of a switch,, its painting a wall so you can climb it…
The pacing just becomes awful in the final stretches and it ruins the charm and feel of the game completely…
The puzzly grind is sort of what Lego games are about..
so Lego fans rejoice…
But in general, while this game genuinely surprised me during the first 7 chapters and had me smiling nonstop, I felt it just started wasting my time towards the end just because…
Don’t let the final bits scare you away though..
LEGO City Undercover is a great game full of laughs and fun even if like me, you hate Lego games.

An often-forgotten gem of the Wii U library gets a new lease of life on its successor, and it marks a perfect stopgap between the majesty of Breath of the Wild and the carnage of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe later this month. Minor framerate issues and higher price tag aside, LEGO City Undercover ranks as one of the very best LEGO games and an ideal portable companion.

Lego City Undercover for Switch doesn’t offer any new content from the Wii U version, but if you never played the Wii U version, than this is an easy choice for Switch owners.

Despite its lack of originality, LEGO City Undercover is a fun and light-hearted LEGO game which you can't help but smile at.

From the hundreds of trinkets to the passersby's stupid comments, LEGO City has me smitten. I’ve finished the story and gathered a handful of collectibles, but LEGO City Undercover will stay in my Switch for a good long while.

If you like LEGO games you can discover now one of the most original entries, but it feels like a missed opportunity to fix its performance issues and add more relevant content, particularly as a full-price release.

LEGO City Undercover is an action-packed platformer filled to the brim with secrets and charm. Whilst the series as a whole has evolved - negating how impressive this was back in 2013 - you'll still find plenty to enjoy on its own merit.

Lego City Undercover is a solid offering from Warner Bros. and TT Games. It doesn’t offer an experience all that different from previous Lego titles, but the jump to the Switch hardware does make it a step up from many other Wii U and 3DS Lego offerings. The game does suffer from some technical warts, but for those that never made the trip to Lego City, this is certainly the best way to experience it.

The only minor gripe I have with this game is that the eshop version is coming in at around €50 here but the physical card can be bought for €30-35 it's just a shame to have to pay an additional €20 for the convenience of not having to swap out game cards to play this if the digital versions cost was in line with the RRP it seems to be following right now.

I really enjoyed my time playing Lego City Undercover. It feels like GTA and the Lego video game franchise had a baby. There is an open world I really enjoyed my time playing Lego City Undercover. It feels like GTA and the Lego video game franchise had a baby. There is an open world to explore, and the landscape is loaded with collectibles. It's slightly different than other Lego games in that you only play as one character, but that character has many different disguises, each with it's own set of abilities. Also, since you are a police officer, you have a few gadgets to use to help you solve crimes and catch the bad guys. From a scanner that lets you ID criminals, to a grappling hook that helps you scale tall buildings, there are some really fun mechanics in this game. In addition to the new mechanics, the old Lego standby of smashing legos and rebuilding them into something useful has returned. There is something cathartic about smashing things to pieces and collecting the legos that fly all over the place! Since it's an open world, they needed to give us ways to get around, and it's a great feeling hopping in a car and exploring the city. If you would rather not drive, you can always hail a taxi to get to your destination. The Lego humor is here, and I found myself smiling frequently during my time with this game. I was impressed at how they managed to include overt jokes for children, with subtle references and jokes aimed at adults as well. Before buying this game, I had read some reviews that complained about performance, but I haven't noticed any large hiccups as of yet, and I have played quite a bit. It it supposed to be worst during co-op play, but I haven't had a chance to play co-op so I can't comment on that. The other complaint I read about was the load times. Yes, there are loading screens that appear, but they aren't terribly long. They mostly tend to occur when you enter one of the story missions. This is because many of the missions take place in separate instances designed specifically for that mission. When I was tackling the missions that take place in the open world city, I did not see a load screen beforehand. All in all, Lego City Undercover is a great addition to the Switch library, and if you are a fan of the series, you will have a blast playing it. At the current price, you really can't go wrong! … Expand

A charming toy-block-adventure that offers a great atmosphere and game world. Every Lego fan should take a look.

If you’ve already played the original LEGO City Undercover on Wii U, then there is little reason to pick up this re-release. However, if you were one of the many who missed it the first time around then LEGO City Undercover remains a hilarious riff on police procedurals, built upon a GTA-for-juniors open world blueprint, and stuffed with enjoyable side missions and collectibles to hunt down.

Lego City Undercover is a very enjoyable game for all ages and with a lot of possibilities, but it has some poorly used elements that could have been much better.

If you look at it from an entertainment and sheer fun point of view, the last installment from the LEGO series by TT Games is probably the best ever made. Unfortunately, this is also one of the sloppiest portings ever seen, full of bugs, crashes and hesitating frame rate. You should wait for a patch, or some summer sale.
