Lego dimensions the goonies

Обновлено: 28.04.2024

It’s back to the 1980’s once more, as LEGO Dimensions takes on another of the most beloved family movies of all time, The Goonies. A story of family, friendship, adventure, and pirate treasure and featuring a cast any director would envy to this day, The Goonies has certainly stood the test of time, almost guaranteed to appear in any “Best movies..” countdown – With names like Spielberg, Home Alone’s Chris Columbus and Superman director Richard Donner involved in the making, is anyone actually surprised?

While 80’s classics have been a staple of LEGO Dimensions, most recently focusing on TV with Knight Rider and the A-Team, this is only the third movie to get a full level pack remake from that era after the similarly beloved Back to the Future and Ghostbusters. While Back to the Future didn’t quite deliver a stellar experience, TT Games did an exception job of bringing Venkman and the gang to life in brick form, even to the point where many fans were begging for a full standalone game, myself included.

The Goonies is a very different beast altogether, though, having much more in common with the likes of E.T. and Gremlins tonally, two movies which have since joined the LEGO multi-verse, but only as fun packs. Will the LEGO truffle-shuffle win over fans of the movie?

The big draw for LEGO collectors will, of course, be the Sloth minifigure included in the pack and so it’s no surprise that he is the character of choice for the physical set. How do you increase the appeal of a LEGO set based on the movie which predominantly features child actors? Pick the one, completely out of the ordinary character to front the franchise. The LEGO Dimensions team pride themselves on their ability to bring characters to life in LEGO that you will never see anywhere else, it’s part of the appeal, and this Sloth minifigure is a brilliant example of them hitting the mark perfectly.

Wearing his iconic superman ripped sleeved t-shirt and red braces, this LEGO Sloth is easily recognisable – well the large custom head-piece certainly helps a little, but we’ll get on to that shortly. The legs don’t offer much, being solid grey with no printing whatsoever, so it’s up to the torso to do a good portion of the work of bringing this character to life. Much like the movie, the blue used for the DC superhero’s top is much darker than that worn by Christopher Reeve’s at the time, in fact, it’s much closer to that of modern Superman.

Aside from the famous ‘S’ emblem, the only other detail Sloth needs is his red braces which continue on to the back and criss-cross. The head-piece is an exclusive design, featuring just the one face with a large open mouth with crooked teeth. I’m actually impressed at how the designers have made Sloth look intimidating and happy in equal measure, much like his on-screen counterpart. The large egg-shaped head is created with a custom piece which clips on to the standard head. This is, of course, what really makes Sloth look the part. The piece consists of moulded ears, printed eyebrows and a small tuft of hair on top. As expected, the back features no additional detail. Sloth is easily one of my favourite exclusive LEGO Dimensions minifigures and as previously mentioned, surely, the biggest attraction of the set to collectors.

Along with Sloth, the pack also includes micro-builds for two gadgets modeled on some of the iconic scenery from the movie. One-Eyed Willy’s Pirate ship has been recreated beautifully in this set. A usable vehicle in-game, the build is great fun to build, the masts and sails created using brown telescope elements and white arched teeth pieces respectively. A simple 3×1 brown element is used for plank and the front uses a simply clip and rod to give the ship it looks. It’s the little cannons that really sell this for me, created using to clipped pieces, the effect is brilliant and adds so much additional detail to the already fantastic micro-build.

In-game the default ship build can, of course, sail on water, with added bonus of being able to blow up silver bricks with the cannons, a fun experience for such a common feature. As per the standard Dimensions template, there are two additional configurations, the Fanged Fortune and the Inferno Cannon, the former featuring a water cannon and the latter working in the same way as the normal cannons.

The Skeleton Organ is equally impressive in it’s design and look. Using 2×1 stud grate pieces for the keys over two levels was a design decision worthy of applause. The top half of the organ is cleverly constructed using a large spoked wheel to clip all the additional detail on to, the bone organ pipes created using small white clips. The large skeleton on the front is created using a standard bone-based minifigure minus the legs, with the bottom of the torso clipping on to the main build instead.

In-game the organ brings it’s own unique gameplay in the form of organ ports to use. These ports bring up a mini game in which you must press different buttons in order to create music and unlock the puzzle. In addition, the organ can blow up silver pieces and use sonar to shatter glass. Again, there are two addition brick configurations available in-game, the Skeleton Jukebox and the Skele-Turkey (Yep, that is not a typo). While the former brings nothing new to the table, the Turkey does have the ability to fly, very handy to the closing parts of the new level.

Moving on to the virtual goodies, the new level, entitled “Traps and treasure on a pirate adventure”, takes a very different approach from other level packs based on movies. Rather than focusing on squeezing the entire run-time into a few key scenes, the level starts part-way through the movie, at the point where Sloth is introduced. The first act of the movie is covered in a rather amusing LEGO wit inspired “Previously on The Goonies…”.

Given the introductions and setup needed in the film, it’s actually a good thing that the game has skipped out most of the “boring stuff” and gone straight for the action. The level then covers Chunk and Sloth’s mission to save the others from the bad-guys, working their way through puzzle after puzzle until they reach One-Eyed Willy’s ship.

The environments are epically detailed, filled to the brim with LEGO pirate paraphernalia and plenty of nods to the movie along the way. Unlike the other level packs, there are far fewer interruptions from a change of scene, this can be both a good and bad thing as the variety of play is somewhat restricted as a result. That said, each section of the level offers it’s own unique challenges, integrating existing keystone puzzle gameplay into the mix.

You can speed through the level in about 30 minutes should you wish to, but realistically if you’re open to full exploration then there are a good few hours of extra gaming here, all the little nooks and crannies to investigate. Overall, a fun experience end to end, with only the best parts of the movie included. There is, of course, the open-world to explore, as well as the battle arena, both of which are themed around the movie and provide extra challenges and scenery to explore. The added bonus is that once you complete the level, you can exchange Sloth for any one of the main cast to play as in-game.

Overall, The Goonies level pack is LEGO Dimensions doing what it has done so well so nearly two-years, a refined movie adaptation which goes slightly off the established level pack template to ensure that only the best bits from the movie are where you spend your time gaming.

The Sloth minifigure is a guaranteed collector’s item, fantastically recreation the monstrous character in all his hideous glory. The gadgets are stunning in their build detail and each adds a unique way to play a game that, by all rights, should be getting a bit tiresome and samey by now.

It goes without saying that those who love the movie are going to get the best out of this pack, but there’s more than enough new puzzles, new gameplay and a good movie explanation in-game for anyone to jump in and join the adventure.

THE GOOD

  • The Sloth minifigure is just perfect
  • Change of pace compared to other level packs thanks to the decision to skip the first act of the movie
  • Play as Chunk in-game and truffle-shuffle your way to glory

THE BAD

  • Due to the setting, all of the environments in the level are very samey. Very little variation in look.

Level Pack Plot

With Astoria's Goon Docks up for foreclosure, Mikey Walsh comes across a map said to belong to One-Eyed Willy in his family's attic and it's up to him and the rest of the Goonies to locate Willy's treasure before their homes will be sold off to Elgin Perkins to be converted into a golf course. While being apart from the group at the Lighthouse Lounge, Chunk runs into the Fratellis and gets trapped inside the same room as Sloth. It's up to you to help them find the rest of the Goonies before Mama, Francis, and Jake can get to them and the fabled treasure.

Walkthrough

Citizen in Peril

Rosalita is trapped behind a large skull-shaped rock inside the caverns with her hand stuck in the rock wall. Get a Magic Ability character to remove the skull rock away from her, allowing her to get out.

Rule Breaker

Abilities needed to complete the Level 100%

Section One

Help Sloth free Chunk from being tied up: first break up a couple of stuff in Sloth's room to make a large see-saw to aid Chunk to get back to the Lighthouse Lounge and free him as well. Next build up a rope ladder to get Sloth upstairs and meet up with Chunk. Once upstairs, get Sloth to break a cracked wall to reveal a switch that will cause an oven to overload and open a Mini Access area for Chunk to get back of the restaurant and open up an opening to Sloth's room. In there, build an push ledge and a car so Sloth can push the latter to a flight of stairs further down to the basement where the cart gets broken up and causes a potted plant to fall over and spill soil over the floor. Get either Sloth or any character with the Digging Ability to dig parts for the Super Strength Handle needed to get the necessary parts for the fire dousing water machine to extinguish the fires that has blocked the area leading down to the Pipes area.

Section Two

Upon hearing the other Fratellis on the trail of the other Goonies, Chunk and Sloth came across a blocked tunnel leading to the caves and they now have to find a new tunnel to reach the rest of the Goonies. Use the Grapple Ability to get Sloth go to the other side upon reaching a broken plank bridge and break 2 wagons to build the rest of the plank bridge for Chunk to get across. Then have Chunk break up 2 barrels to free up a Mini Access so he can get behind an area with skeletons. Break up the skeletons to unleash a large boulder that will break a hole on the ground and reveal a rope ladder to reach the next area. Upon reaching the ground below, use the Digging Ability to unearth a chest, open it to get parts for the push switch and build it before using it to bring the drawbridge that will take them to the next part with a Skeleton switch. Have both Sloth and Chunk stand on it, triggering a series of booby traps. Avoid getting hit by them as you reach for the underground lagoon beneath the well and, after the Fratellis went down, break some boxes in order to build the mini Inferno. The Octopus then brings a tentacle up: use the Inferno's cannons to hit its suction cups, causing it to roar and bring down a bucket holding the parts for the Keystone. Break it and build the Keystone and the Chroma pads, and use the Chroma keystone to send a boulder down to open up the hole that could lead Chunk and Sloth further down the caves.

Section Three

Break up some boxes to build a chest, then push it into the water and push it again underwater to a slot that will cause the water to be drained and reveal a water pump. Turn the wheel around to open two switches behind the 'eye sockets' rock formation and silver teeth in where a lagoon used to be in. Bring out the Inferno or any character, vehicle, or gadget with the Silver LEGO Blowup Ability to blast the teeth away and get to the Shift Keystone and use it to open the gated entrance to the next area. After avoiding a large ax swinging down, get Chunk inside a Mini Access entrance to get to a switch that will open to a blocked entry with Super Strength Handle which will need Sloth to open it to reach a new portion where it will need Sloth to use the Grapple Ability to reach a Skeleton Organ Port to build the Skeleton Organ. Once built, play the right notes on it to open the drawbridge to the waterslide that will lead Sloth and Chunk to the lagoon where the Inferno is docked and the other Goonies are held hostage by the Fratellis.

Section Four

On board the Inferno, it's time to rescue the other Goonies from Mama, Jake, and Francis' clutches. Break up a chest and box to build a Push switch and use it to bring down a net and a rope that will lead you to the next deck where you will break boxes and cut out vines with Chunk to get the Mini Access so he can get to another part of the Inferno to open a switch, which then sends in a canon blowing out a cannonball that send a skeleton flying and opens up a entrance to the Captain's Quarters. Once you get to there, have Sloth break the cracked floor, sending the quarters' floor down to the water with the Octopus being nearby. Beat the tentacles up so the Octopus can bring out a clam blowing us to send everyone back to the quarters. Break up a box and windows shutters to build a ship-like pump that is used to bring up the clam that is revealed to have a Sonar Smash Pearl: use the Skeleton Organ to break the pearl open and access the Locate Keystone which will summon Raven to use her Magic to create a fist punching a hole on the ceiling, revealing even more treasures and a rope that will take you to the upper deck to save the other Goonies.

Section Five

Help Sloth, Chunk, and Data in rescuing the other Goonies. To save Brand and Andy, have Sloth dive underwater and dig up parts for the pump to bring up a broken radio to shore, allowing Data to repair it and have it play music, making the Octopus to dance to it. In order to save Mouth, have Data fix up the pulley to bring up a lifeboat with barrels, break a barrel apart, and use the leftover parts to build a Technology Pad for him to use to lift a crane, freeing Mouth from the hatch. Francis will then jump in to fight: avoid getting hit by his sword, and when he does get his sword stuck, beat him three time, and his defeat will reveal a Sonar Smash wall that can be broken by the Skeleton Organ or a character with the Sonar Smash Ability to access the Chroma keystone. In order to save Mikey from the chest, break up items to build a fan and another Technology pad for Data to use to allow air flow to reach for one of the masts, then grapple from mast to mast to get to the red Chroma pad, and use the Inferno or Skeleton Organ to blast a silver LEGO rock to get the blue Chroma pad. Once Mikey escapes, Jake will show up and fight you with a gun in song: beat him three times and he will reveal Stef trapped in a cage with a Super Strength Handle: use it to free her.

Section Six

Thanks to the Fratellis accidentally triggering a booby trap inside the Inferno, everyone is trapped inside the lagoon as it crumbles apart. But with some help of Data bringing up a dynamite, get the Goonies out of the crumbling lagoon by finding and building three more dynamites. For the first dynamite, first climb up some rocks to get to the upper cave levels, then break up some rocks and skeletons to assemble a Skeleton Organ Port, and use the Skeleton Organ to play the right notes to summon down rocks to create a Dig Spot. Have Sloth dig it up to get a box and break it to get parts to build the first dynamite with. To get to the second dynamite, build a Grapple Hook and then get Sloth to bring it down then rebuild it onto the blocked exit. For the last dynamite, have Sloth break into the cracked wall and then illuminate the area to see the Octopus in trouble then use the Silver LEGO Blowup Ability to free it. The Octopus then breaks free and throws in the last dynamite onto the exit, breaking it: rebuild it onto the exit. Once all three dynamites are rebuilt, falling debris will bring out parts for the push switch and giant blow torch: build them and use the switch to have the blow torch light up the dynamites. Unfortunately, this had a boulder falling onto the exit, so get Sloth to lift it up so everyone can get out before the lagoon will collapse.

Sloth hasn't been this happy since he had that Baby Ruth

The following abilities become available for you to use throughout the Lego Dimensions universe when you purchase this Level Pack:

  • Sloth: Break cracked walls, use super strength handles, grapple, dig, dive, hit targets
  • One-Eyed Willy's Pirate Ship transformations: One-Eyed Willy's Pirate Ship (sail on water, destroy silver blocks), Fanged Fortune (spray water, cut vines), The Inferno Cannon (destroy silver blocks)
  • Skeleton Organ transformations: Skeleton Organ (interact with organ docks, smash glass), Skeleton Jukebox (jump high, use electricity), Skele-Turkey (destroy gold blocks, use flight docks and flight cargo hooks, use tow bars)

When you first enter The Goonies level, you're treated to a Lego interpretation of the opening of the movie. It's quite funny seeing it in Lego form and it sets the tone for a fun adventure. The level begins in the middle of The Goonies movie as you find yourself playing as the chubby fellow Chunk who has been locked up in the basement of the dubious Fratelli family's restaurant. Chunk quickly befriends the hated Fratelli brother known as Sloth who is also locked up in the basement and they make a quick escape.

The rest of the level consists of long cave and pirate ship sequences which fits with the theme. There are numerous traps to dodge and solve as you traverse the caves and plenty of features to break and reform into useful objects once you reach the pirate ship. Unfortunately, when you finish the level, there is no boss to be found. Other Level Packs had one or more bosses in them that helped to bring the enjoyment to a fulfilling conclusion. Missing this here and the fact that the level came to an end quicker than I was expecting makes it feel a little rushed. However, the ending video is entertaining and wraps up the finale of the experience well.

Get out of here, Doctor Who; wrong movie!

The Goon Dock neighbourhood of Astoria that's depicted in the adventure world is quite small in comparison to other worlds. The streets of Astoria look like an average town with a few landmarks dotted around such as Goon Dock museum and the homes of the main characters. It doesn't really do much to set itself apart. When you travel underground, you'll find the pirate caves which expand the amount of fun to be had a bit more. There are a few hidden areas with puzzles to solve and the underwater section has some additional challenges to complete. That being said, caves and modern day neighbourhoods have been done before so ultimately, the environments leave a lot to be desired. On a positive note, the voice acting sounds redone for the game which is great. The fact that you can switch between four of the main characters in The Goonies movie (all with their own voices) is pretty nifty, too.

I didn't realise Sloth could be such a dashing young gentleman

The Goonies is the final Level Pack of the current Lego Dimensions series. Therefore, if you're an avid collector like I am then you'll have to purchase this pack to complete your collection. However, the rushed level and mostly uninspired and small adventure world means that if you're picking and choosing which Level Packs to get then I would recommend leaving The Goonies for last.

GameCentral tries out the new expansions for Lego Dimensions, that add Sloth from The Goonies, Chase McCain, and Hermione Granger.

The world today has seen technological wonders and social change of a sort we could never have dreamed of when growing up in the eighties. But of all the impossible-to-imagine innovations we think a Lego video game based on The Goonies is the one that would’ve blown our young minds the most explosively.

This is the last level pack to be released for the current season of Lego Dimensions, and with the toys to life concept rapidly falling out of favour it remains to be seen whether there’ll ever be any more. There are two more waves of fun packs (i.e. just a single figure and a vehicle) on the way – based on new franchises Beetlejuice, The Powerpuff Girls, and Teen Titans Go! – but beyond that the franchise’s future is unclear. Especially after the recent announcement of Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2.

Some parents may breathe a sigh of relief at that, and yet they’re the ones an expansion like The Goonies is primarily aimed at. Many of the franchises added in the second season have clearly been for the benefit of thirtysomething dads rather than their actual children. Unless 80s properties like The A-Team, Knight Rider, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial have some massive following with the under-10s that we’re not aware of.

All of the above mentioned 80s shows and films only got a single fun pack – the smallest expansion available, that only adds a hub adventure world and a new backdrop for the four-player arena mode. The Goonies though is a level pack, which means you get two vehicles and a proper story adventure of around three hours in length. Obviously, there’s not really any vehicles associated with the film (you get a skeleton organ and a pirate ship – which looks nothing like the in-game model) but the junior Indiana Jones style escapades of the movie are a reasonable fit for the Lego formula.

The level pack manages to skip over the film’s talky parts a bit more elegantly than the Back To The Future one, recreating the opening sequence in Lego and adding an extra montage preceded by the phrase ‘Previously on The Goonies…’ The actual game proper starts with Chunk stuck in the Fratellis’ hideout with Sloth. Sloth is the only minifigure you get, but you can play as Chunk as well anyway – complete with Truffle Shuffle spin attack. You also briefly get to play as Data towards the end, and can unlock all the characters for the hub world by beating the story.

What transpires is exactly what you’d expect if you’ve ever played a Lego game before, with lots of simple puzzles and basic platforming. It’s engaging stuff for kids though and still enjoyable for adults thanks to the addictive joy of smashing Lego bricks and collecting studs. Unusually though there’s no combat, just a couple of very brief pseudo-boss battles with the Fratelli brothers at the end.

The Lego models are cool, but the vehicles in the game look different

Like all the Lego games you can tell developer TT Games had a lot of fun squeezing in as many fan references as possible, notably a number of appearances from a giant octopus – which was cut from the original movie. There’s no Cindi Lauper though, unfortunately, even though one puzzle is clearly meant as a nod to her music.

What TT Games love the most though is Doctor Who, and if you have the TARDIS vehicle there’s a whole extra bonus stage based around Second Doctor adventure The Evil of the Daleks (or at least we think that’s what it is, we’re not quite hardcore enough Whovians to be sure).

At around £25, level packs are not cheap, but their value for money is very hard to judge given that they include actual Lego toys and access to the adventure world hub. The latter is very similar to the E.T. one, since they’re both small American towns, but it’s filled with an appreciable amount of extra quests and more appearances from the film’s other characters – most of which are voiced by reasonably accurate sound-alikes.

As fans of the film we thoroughly enjoyed it, even if we recognised that it did nothing new with the Lego Dimensions formula. We don’t think anyone would expect anything different though, and if you like Lego and you like The Goonies (are there really people that don’t?) you get exactly what it says on the tin with this one.

Lego City fun pack

Chase is back, but we don

Two other fun packs were also released this month, and this one allows access to the otherwise inaccessible Lego City adventure world hub. It’s based on the recently re-released Lego City Undercover game and includes a Chase McCain minifigure and a police helicopter that can be remade as a hovercraft and a plane. We’re often impressed by the intricacies of the Lego mini-builds, especially as they can all be remade into three different things, but these ones are not very good. And once again they look quite different from the in-game models, which kind of ruins the point.

The hub world clearly reuses a lot of assets from the original game, but it’s a fair size and replicates Chase’s ability to dress up as other roles such as fireman, construction worker, farmer, and astronaut. The best bit though is that all the original voice actors have returned, and the script is just as sharp as Lego City Undercover. We were particularly glad to see the return of the construction worker who talks only in increasingly obscure quotes from Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. Which is probably the closest you’ll ever get to Raw Deal being adapted into a Lego game.

Harry Potter fun pack

Build your Harry Potter collection

Perhaps the strangest thing about the second season of Lego Dimensions expansions is that there was never a level pack for Harry Potter, even though Warner Bros. has the licence. All we’ve had is a team pack that includes Harry and Voldemort, and now this fun pack that adds Hermione in her civvies. Owning any of those three characters gives you access to the Harry Potter adventure world hub, which is one of the largest in the game and includes Hogwarts and a number of other famous locations.

You don’t get anything extra from using Hermione over one of the other two, but she does come with Buckbeak the hippogriff – who is a very cool little model. He can be remade as a Giant Owl and ‘Fierce Falcon’, all of which look much better than the Lego City vehicles. New fun packs go for about £13, which is worth it if you like the character and want access to the hub. Although you’d have to be a fairly committed Harry Potter fan to want both this and the team pack.
