Lego story pack batman

Обновлено: 13.05.2024

Following his star turn in 2014’s The LEGO Movie, the Dark Knight has returned to the big screen in spectacular form. The LEGO Batman movie sees the bricked action turn to Gotham City as the Joker (and every other DC character imaginable) unleashes a plan to prove he is Batman’s most dangerous enemy.

Developer: TT Games
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Set Number: 71264
Release Date: Out Now

At the time of writing this review, the movie has been out five days and it’s safe to say that the Caped Crusader’s solo LEGO outing has been a success. The LEGO Batman movie is currently sitting in the number one spot on both the UK and US box-office charts and has seen a plethora of positive reviews from critics and fans alike. You can read our fantastically spoiler free review here.

The movie has, of course, spawned a range of tie-in sets, brilliantly recreating some of the best bits of the movie, but LEGO has another ace up their sleeve when it comes to spreading the Dark Knight joy, LEGO Dimensions.

Series two of the toy-to-life Goliath saw the introduction of the Story Packs, feature length add-on packs based on major movie releases which even come with their own custom portal scenery. Following the big blockbuster packs, Ghostbusters and Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, comes LEGO’s first home brewed story pack franchise, The LEGO Batman Movie.

Following two brilliant themed toy-hub builds, the LEGO Batman movie brings us the Bat-Computer. At first glance, this new facade looks a little bare compared to what the previous story packs gave us, but where it lacks it some places, it more than makes up for in others.

Of course, it’s probably a lot easier to create a toy for something when you can create a direct like-for-like copy of the design, but even so, the main computer console is stunning. The clever use of triangular pieces and clips to create the bat symbol make this 30-minute build an incredibly fun experience.

I’m a little bit disappointed by the reuse of the same printed screen console panel, the same design is used six times is this design and, while looking great from a distance with the different panels rotated, seems a little lazy and a little more detail and colour would have been appreciated. The main body of the Bat-Computer is connected via an ‘L’ shaped Technics attachment on the back. Considering it’s a singular connection, it is surprisingly sturdy. The bottom half of the wings then clip on either side with the top half clipped to that. What this gives you is a fairly flexible creation which can be angled is a number of different ways.

Leading out of the base of the computer is a simple black border around the central toy pad, nothing too special, but adding to the suggestion that the character in that spot is in control of the large machine. To the left of the computer, you’ll give a 2×2 base on a hinge so that is can be set at an angle. This panel is a basic weapons holder, with clips for a Batarang and two guns. On the other side is a similarly hinged piece, featuring that same computer console panel.

The design is a little spartan compared to the Ghostbusters and Fantastic Beasts builds, but that’s partly down to being the first of the three to not be a recreation of the full side of a building. Nevertheless, this will surely please Batman fans. It also looks awesome with any of the movie tie-in sets you may already own.

Moving on to the minifigures included in the set, and for the first time in a story pack, there are two included, Batgirl and Robin. But where is Batman?, I hear you ask. Well, rather than include a new version of the character you get with the starter pack, you can just use that toy in-game and the LEGO Batman movie version will appear on-screen – kudos on that idea, while I would have loved another Batman figure to add to my ever growing collection, I’d much rather have two characters I don’t currently own at all.

With designs plucked straight from the movie, Batgirl and Robin look amazing and given how neither has appeared in any variant thus far in LEGO Dimensions, this is a real treat for those looking to extend their collection of whacky characters.

Beginning with Batgirl, a.k.a. Barbara Gordon, this minifigure could have been taken straight from the Adam West era and damn, does it look brilliant. The purple and yellow ensemble works exceptionally well in LEGO form, from the dual-coloured legs to the large purple cowl with added ponytail. As an avid fan of 60’s Batman, I adore this minifigure. One thing of note, for those not familiar with the new Batman sets, is the added utility belt piece which fits between the legs and torso. I first came across it reviewing one of the tie-in sets which saw Batman take on Mr. Freeze.

Much like Batman’s figure, it’s a great addition to Batgirl, removing the need for a printed belt and there adding more space to the torso for other detail. Speaking of which, the torso design comes complete with the now standard female waist curves (still don’t honestly see the point) with a vertical silver band down each side, a chest emblem and the vague outline of the bat emblem, from the shoulders down to the center.

Sadly, we don’t get a soft material cape, a consistency across the LEGO Dimensions figures. Finally, the head, which is mostly purple to go with the cowl piece, features a fairly generic face on the slightly darker skin tone of the character from the movie.

In-game Batgirl has very similar skills for Batman. Her abilities include Batarang, grapple, rope Swing, detective mode, stealth, and glide. The big one in that list is detective mode, which features three different sub-modes based on where on the toy pad the character is sitting. Overall, Batgirl works well as a Batman replacement (who would want that), allowing you almost all of his skills in a kick-ass female character.

Moving on to poor Robin, Batman’s sidekick taken to the extreme of mockery for his newest outing. What this does mean, though, is we get one very unique design for Robin that features the classic garb, but from the neck up is nothing like the Dick Grayson’s of the past. Ignoring the hair and glasses one-piece, and this is a traditional Robin – well over the years he’s been given trousers in most iterations, but it’s back to just pants for this superhero.

The detail on the torso is impressive, every stitch of the classic design captured brilliantly. with a bold yellow belt just above the green underwear outline. Unsurprisingly, the legs are mostly skin-colour, though feature red boots with a nice defining black outline rather than just a change of colour. Back up to the top of the figure and the head piece is dual-faced, though both facial expressions are incredibly generic. Luckily the aforementioned hair piece adds the unique quality this character needs to stand out.

In-game Robin has some very useful abilities including some fairly common ones such as acrobatic, illumination, fix-it, dive and vent account – which is hilarious in LEGO Batman Movie mode. In addition, he can also change into Nightwing and use additional skills, cutting, laser deflector, pole vault and glide features. Overall, an impressive list of abilities and yet Batman still has no respect for the poor guy.

Vehicle-wise, the set comes with a rather nice micro-build of the movie’s Batwing, Batman’s personal jet of awesomeness. Considering the number of pieces used in its construction, it is incredibly detailed.

With the slightest hint of red sandwiched between the black makes a huge difference in highlighting the different parts of this craft. Two studs of yellow do the same as they hint at the cockpit area. The majority of the Batwing, however, is black and grey, the contrasting of which adds weapons and nose detail.

Turn the craft on its side and you can clearly make out the shape of the bat signal, a little distorted given the micro nature of the build, but it still looks superb.

The thrusters of the back of the model are created using four wheels and while it’s fairly obvious that this detail idea came out of the need to provide pieces of the addition piece configurations, it’s a great look that suits the jet perfectly.

In game the Batwing has a couple of decent abilities, you’re not getting mind-shattering new functionality, but the skills match the theme of the set.

Unsurprisingly, the jet can fly, but also has the ability to use the three wall hooks to pull down structures, something usually reserved for ground-based vehicles. The Batwing also has a handy missile launcher, great for taking out vastness numbers of bad guys from the sky. Finally, the craft can pick up and deliver cargo, or huge ACME-style bombs, as the case may be. Overall, all useful abilities for the Dark Knight, of not really that unique.

As I’ve already mentioned, there are the obligatory additional configurations available to unlock in-game. The Black Thunder is a basic four-wheeler able to use accelerator points and the Bat-Tank adds to that the ability to destroy silver LEGO pieces.

Moving on to what you get as extras in the game from this pack and the answer is simple, awesomeness. I’m determined to keep this as spoiler-free as possible so I won’t go into too much detail regarding the actual contents of the story, but it is definitely worth seeing the movie before jumping in.

Much like the LEGO Movie, The LEGO Batman Movie franchise is perfect for Dimensions as not only is it already a LEGO product, but the concept of a multiverse of different franchises merging is already a part of it. Great if you want to add a few extra heroes on to the toy pad, as not even Sonic the Hedgehogs would look too out of place in this world of chaotic beauty.

The story pack has been broken up the main story into a myriad of stunning scenery across six action-packed levels focused around key points in the movie. The levels themselves are surprisingly extensive, you get through one checkpoint expecting that to be the end of the level and before you know it you’re up against another DC bad guy, it’s thoroughly exhilarating as a Batman fan.

As with other story and level packs, the LEGO Batman movie add-on brings with it its own additional features, a new keystone, and some character specific panels to play with. The new keystone is incredibly fun once you get the hang of it. Working on the multi-dimensional concept, the keystone opens three portals to other dimensions and brings in full structures for you to use to overcome a puzzle depending on what pad of the toy pad your character is on.

The cut-scenes between each level have been cleverly selected to not give away too much of the movie, with only hints are the bigger plot of the whole story. Still, as I’ve already mentioned, you should consider watching the movie first.

In addition to the multi-level story pack, the LEGO Batman movie also gets its own hub-world, despite there already being worlds for The LEGO Movie and DC Comics. This new world is essentially a recreation of Gotham City with the usual side missions to play. Again, using the starter pack Batman gives you LEGO Batman Movie Batman in-game.

Overall, The LEGO Batman Movie story pack speaks for itself, with like for like design recreations there is very little you can find flaws in when it comes to the physical LEGO side. That said, this is the smallest of the Toy pad builds and that spartan look might disappoint some fans.

The minifigures are superb, offering two wonderfully camp looking characters that both come with some impressive skill sets. The addition of LEGO Batman movie Batman with the reuse of the starter pack Batman is a genius bonus, meaning that another version of the Dark Knight wasn’t included over the two characters which ended up in the pack.

The in-game benefits are way up there with the best that LEGO Dimensions has offered in the 17 months since its arrival. Much like the movie itself, the levels are jam-packed with references from Batman’s lengthy history, more than enough mocking of said history and a couple of fun cameos along the way.

If you enjoyed the LEGO Batman Movie, you’re going to love this pack.

With the second major Lego movie now on the silver screen, TT Games has unleashed a new Story Pack to go alongside it. There's something here for everyone with a surprising amount of franchises represented so let's head to Arkham and check it out.

Lego Dimensions: The Lego Batman Movie Story Pack screenshot 1

Batgirl and Robin try and decide who should pilot the Batwing

Robin is an adorable little guy with huge green goggles and matching undies really bringing the character to life. Batgirl looks classy in her purple and yellow outfit complete with a boomerang and her red hair in a ponytail. The batwing is one of the more unique-looking flying vehicles with four jets on the back and some interesting detail on the front. Lastly, the portal gate is definitely the simplest of the gates available so far. It's essentially a very simplified version of the Bat Computer found in the Batcave. It's quite disappointing as it would have been cool to see some extra pieces added to the base to simulate the surrounding area in the cave. However, I can't complain too much because I'd rather have a new character than a more interesting gate any day. Plus, I'm very happy with the available unique abilities that each character provides.

Superhero dance party!

The following abilities become available for you to use throughout the Lego Dimensions universe when you purchase this Story Pack:

  • Robin: Do acrobatic moves, fix broken objects, access vents specific to Robin, illuminate dark areas, rip suit to become a half-Batman half-Robin hybrid, dive underwater, throw poles and pole vault (when dressed as Batman), deflect lasers
  • Batgirl: Throw a boomerang, use a grapple hook, trigger detective mode to uncover hidden objects in various ways, use stealth abilities, high security access
  • Batwing transformations: Batwing (use tow bar, flight docks and cargo hooks), The Black Thunder (use accelerator switches and tow bar), Bat-Tank (use accelerator switches and tow bar, destroy silver blocks)

The two included characters have some very unique abilities that I feel are worth elaborating upon. First, Robin can climb into vents. Other Lego Dimensions characters can climb into small doors but Robin has the unique ability to navigate through vents hidden in walls after jumping up to reach them. When he enters the vent, you're in for a comical treat as you watch him meander through ducts while pulling silly faces and acrobatic moves. It really is quite adorable and silly. Robin also has the ability to rip his suit and show a Batman suit hidden beneath. His cute version of Batman doesn't just make him look like his hero but it also gives him an ability to throw glowing sticks that allow him to activate certain switches specifically made for that ability.

Lego Dimensions: The Lego Batman Movie Story Pack screenshot 3

Robin does some of his best work sans pants

Batgirl has the unique ability to trigger detective mode. When triggered, there are three different ways that she interacts with her surroundings in order to uncover clues. First off, she'll display a sound meter that you must use to find the source of a sound. Next, she'll use her nose to follow a scent (similar to certain four-legged Lego Dimensions characters). Finally, she'll track footprints on the floor (just like some detective characters). When these abilities are active, the colour of the screen changes and all attention is paid to Batgirl so that she can have the focus she needs in order to uncover the next clue. It's quite fun to use and a welcome addition to the arsenal of abilities available in the Lego Dimensions universe. Batgirl also has the distinct ability to solve maze clues that unlock doors. These mazes are very simple to solve so they're not really much of a challenge.

As the box promises, the Story Pack follows the events of The Lego Batman Movie. You're dropped off right in the middle of the action from the get-go, fighting The Joker and Clayface. After the battle, you're given a sneak peek of the Batcave in Wayne Manor before heading off to meet up with Superman at The Fortress of Solitude and look into obtaining The Projector in order to send The Joker into the Phantom Zone and stop his dastardly plans at the power plant. Superman is just one of many friends and enemies that you'll meet while playing through the levels and exploring the world. He happens to be throwing a party with a bunch of superheroes so you can decide to get to the next part of the level quickly or destroy everything in sight to get back at him for not inviting you.

Lego Dimensions: The Lego Batman Movie Story Pack screenshot 4

Batgirl patrols Arkham City looking for evildoers

The next level has you hunting The Joker in Arkham Asylum in order to use the device on him. Things don't exactly go according to plan as The Joker is eventually sent to the Phantom Zone where he promptly decides to free all of the other villains who were trapped there and starts a reign of chaos over Arkham City as a result. Sauron's eye makes a big (and humorous) appearance here and there's an even more unexpected addition to the mix of villains: Agents from The Matrix. I loved watching a particularly delightful scene that re-enacts a moment in the first Matrix movie where Morpheus is freed from the Agents' grasp and jumps to a helicopter from a skyscraper. This scene is complete with camera angles matching the live action film. I sincerely hope that this is TT Games giving us a sneak peek of a new pack for Lego Dimensions or possibly a full Lego Matrix game.

To wrap things up, you'll wander around the Phantom Zone where you'll jump from block to block in a void of nothingness, eventually walking on walls and upside-down to reach your goal of escaping it. This level is quite short but it was neat to see a totally different setting from the other levels. The final area has you fighting The Joker as well as Lord Voldemort in a couple of boss fights. The last fight is especially interesting as it makes you use the new Phase portal ability. When triggered, you place a character on any of the three portal areas to make a small section display with a few items that can be interacted with in order to complete a goal. Doing so in the right succession and with the correct timing to take out the boss can be challenging but it's also a lot of fun.

Lego Dimensions: The Lego Batman Movie Story Pack screenshot 5

Looks like Oscar the Grouch got himself into some radioactive garbage

The Lego Batman Movie adventure world is a miniature and simplified version of Arkham City. As far as its visuals go, it generally looks like your stereotypical Lego city but it does enough to set itself apart from other Lego packs in that there are many interesting-looking monuments and familiar locations scattered about. The more well-known locations of Wayne Manor and Arkham Asylum (as well as a funfair area) play a big part in keeping the map interesting. There are no new mechanics introduced, however, and all of the gold brick collecting you do will be accomplished through very familiar tasks.

Overall, this latest Story Pack is on par with the experience introduced in the base Lego Dimensions game as it brings so many franchises into a new set of levels and has them interact in hilarious ways. Including the extra character was a great move, too. Although the levels are a bit short and the adventure world lacks new features, there's still a ton of fun to be had in Lego Arkham.

lego dimensions batman review

The LEGO Batman Movie story pack is one I was looking forward to the most in my ever growing collection of LEGO Dimensions sets. The formula here hasn’t changed from the standard LEGO Dimensions formula, but it does add some additional character exclusive abilities and manages to tell a hilarious story that also incorporates a lot of characters from the LEGO Universe that we saw glimpses of in the LEGO Batman Movie.

The LEGO Batman Movie story pack is interesting, as you would expect it to be just like another LEGO Batman game, but due to the villains introduced in the movie it actually ends up feeling like a new LEGO Dimensions game. Unlike the LEGO Ghostbusters 2016 pack or the Fantastic Beast story pack, which featured characters mostly from its movie, LEGO Batman features characters like King Kong, Agent Smith (The Matrix) and the flying monkeys from Wizard of Oz. These characters made appearances in the LEGO Batman Movie but they allow this story pack to stand out. Watching Batman try an take on Voldemort is not only hilarious due to his dialogue but also refreshing as it doesn’t feel like just another LEGO Batman game.

For those who have seen the LEGO Batman Movie will know just how hilarious the movie is, in particular the self centeredness of Batman. Travelers Tales have done an amazing job at bringing that humor into this story pack. Batman’s one liners are perfect and Robin is just as goofy as he is in the movie. Batman constantly makes excuses when he can’t figure something out and constantly talks about himself. When idle he even pulls out a rock guitar and starts rocking out. It’s all so very well done.

The new story pack doesn’t come with a new Batman character but instead simply has you use the one from the starter pack. What it does come with is the movie version of Robin and Batgirl. Both are unique characters with abilities that we haven’t seen in the LEGO Dimensions game before. Robin has the ability to climb through ventilation shafts which in itself is perfectly animated because he does the warm break dance move when he shimmies around in the vents. Robin also has the ability to change costumes by ripping off his clothes like he does in the movie and turns into The LEGO Batman Movie version of Nightwing, while in the Nightwing costume he is able to swing on posts with his staff and illuminate dark areas.

lego batman

Batgirl is also given a new ability and new game gimmick. Hers it’s more of a new puzzle which sees her rotate parts of a sphere to connect lines so they can reach a core and power up devices. It’s not a difficult puzzle to solve but anything new to the LEGO formula is welcomed. Batman himself is utilized in new mechanics as well. At some points you have to be a detective and figure out how to access secret passages. In specific areas Batman can go into detective mode much like in the Batman Arkham games and reveal footsteps or smells to follow to figure out his next step and solving puzzles. Batman also has the ability to stun his enemies by shooting them with a merchandise gun. This gun stunes anyone it hits by putting a Batman t-shirt on them confusing them as they try and figure out how they got this new Batman shirt. It’s very entertaining to watch.

The biggest problem with the LEGO Batman Movie story pack is it feels rushed. Cutscenes feel empty with almost no detail in the backgrounds and a lot of the textures look like they were pulled from the PlayStation 2. The new hub world also didn’t get much attention in much the same way as the cutscenes. LEGO Batman’s Gotham City has been given almost no love. The streets are barren with hardly any NPC’s walking around and again looks incredibly bland with almost no detail put into the backgrounds compared to the great attention to detail in the Fantastic Beasts and Ghostbusters 2016 hub worlds it’s clear that Travelers Tales just didn’t have the time with this story pack like they did with the others. It’s also a lot smaller than past story pack hub worlds.

The LEGO Batman Movie story pack is still a great addition to the LEGO Dimensions franchise but one that feels like it should have been better. It’s great to see new characters finally get new abilities for future instalments and the humor is just as great as it was in the movie but it also shows signs of a rushed product that I hope isn’t a sign of things to come. With the lack of competition this year Travelers Tales can get a stranglehold on the market, I just hope it doesn’t come at the cost of quality.

Score

The Final Word

The LEGO Batman Movie story pack should have been the best LEGO Dimensions addition thus far, but somehow it feels like the weakest. The lack of polish and bland world hurt it from reaching the great heights the movie set but thankfully the humor and gameplay more than make up for its faults.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Lego Dimensions: The Lego Batman Movie Story Pack is a physical story expansion pack for the Lego Dimensions video game. It features content based on The Lego Batman Movie. The game's focus is generally split between puzzle-solving and fighting. Violence and destruction in the game are done in a stylized and cartoonish nature, with people and objects falling apart like toys, leaving Lego studs behind to collect. The game is easy to pick up and play for gamers of all ages and skill levels, though building the physical Lego toys may require supervision for younger players. While players don't need to buy a lot of additional items, they're constantly shown Lego and Batman material. Plus, while the game can be played with only the Batman Pack and Lego Dimensions Starter Pack, additional characters will need to be bought to fully explore all the optional content.

What’s It About?

LEGO DIMENSIONS: THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE STORY PACK is the third full story expansion pack released for the Lego Dimensions video game. Based on the big-screen release, it puts gamers in the cape and cowl of The Lego Movie version of DC Comics' Dark Knight. When Batman's rogue's gallery decides, unexpectedly, to give themselves up to police, the World's Greatest Detective is suddenly faced with a Gotham City that doesn't need him anymore. Reluctantly taking an overenthusiastic orphan under his wing as a sidekick, Batman comes up with an idea: to take on his villains one more time. Along the way, he's forced to reevaluate his views on family and friendship, and he teams up with new allies and old friends to stop one more scheme that threatens to literally tear the building-brick version of the city apart.

Is It Any Good?

This new expansion in this popular franchise ramps up the comedy and brings new tweaks to a (now) well-known formula. For its latest expansion, the game takes a trip to Gotham City and let fans play around with the Caped Crusader and all his wonderful toys. As with previous Story Packs, there are a couple of additions this time around, including new character abilities such as Detective Mode, High Security Access, and Vent Access, all of which are exclusive to characters from The Lego Batman Movie. While these are pretty much only new ways to access different areas in the game, they do make the new characters feel unique and necessary, which is a good thing because they are hilariously funny in the game. It's hard to keep a straight face around Robin in particular, with his doe-eyed excitement over the smallest thing and his eagerness to please Batman. That's the thing about this expansion: While Lego Dimensions has never been a game that takes itself too seriously, Lego Dimensions: The Lego Batman Movie Story Pack (much like the movie) cranks the comedy up to eleven.

One of the first things that stands out about this pack, even before you play the game, is its lack of an actual Batman figure to use for the game, despite both Robin and Batgirl mini-figures being included. This is because players are meant to use the Batman figure that comes with the game's Starter Pack. It's a minor thing but worth mentioning since technically they are two different characters with different abilities. Players can even unlock a special red-brick "Extra" that allows players to use The Lego Batman Movie version of the character in other worlds throughout Lego Dimensions. While The Lego Batman Story Pack doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel when it comes to the tried-and-true Lego game formula, as a stand-alone experience it's surprisingly meaty and feels like a complete gam. The stages are lengthy with a lot of hidden goodies to seek out with some of the other Lego Dimensions characters, and even after you beat the story, there are still the Adventure World and Battle Arena to explore.

Talk to Your Kids About .

Families can talk about consumerism in media. Does playing something like Lego Dimensions: The Lego Batman Movie Story Pack encourage players to pick up more Batman-related merchandise (or vice versa)? Do players feel forced to buy more figures to have a complete experience, or can they be content with what's in the box?

Talk about creativity and imagination. How does building the vehicles and characters in Lego Dimensions add to the personal experience? Does it inspire players to build more outside the scope of the game?
