Rare superior car, very educational

I bought this second hand and built the main model. It was a challenging and fun build and every step was exciting to me, especially steps involving gears! This huge car comes with a great deal of working functions and details that every car should have. Seeing and building all these functions first hand with out getting a real car was great for teaching myself about the insides of a car! The car appears to be some kind of huge specialised SUV. It looks beautiful in my opinion, with bodywork made out of the cool ribbed hoses and old technic panels with the holes, but not too much that it covers literally everything, unlike modern technic sets that are overclad in bodywork that insists on hiding the moving parts we all loved to see. Its tires are also the biggest tire ever produced by Lego and they match the car nicely. Several assets in this set like tires, panels, and short driving rings are sadly retired pieces and will likely never return in a new Lego set ever again. There are also no ugly colours used in the deep mechanisms. This is one of the few sets that are truly an all wheel drive. Most Lego cars were named as 4x4 just because it was cool, but this one's real. The 3 differentials are necessary to connect each wheel to the engine, but allows them to spin in different speeds. They help a little bit when turning, and spinning 1 wheel still moves the engine. There is a cool working gearbox in the car and it has a gear stick so that it can be controlled. It has 5 speeds + reverse that change how the pistons in the fake engine move when rolling the wheels. Thanks to the bare bodywork, moving the gear stick is easy as your hands aren't obstructed. The gear stick also makes a satisfiing clicking sound when put into position. Its such a clever mechanism and I love thinking about it! The car has 2 gull wing doors that are each connected to buttons that make them swing open realistically using damped springs. The buttons don't work both ways so the doors must be closed manually. The lower half of the doors are actually stepping platforms that fold out downwards when the doors open! These are really cool and make sense since the car has so much ground clearance. There are some negative aspects to the car though. Firstly the steering is rather weak. The wheels don't turn much at all and give the car a HUGE turning circle, not something an off road vehicle should have. Having only front wheel steering doesn't help either. The steering is thankfully controlled by a functional steering wheel (uncommon in new sets) and an extra steering wheel on top of the car for easy play. I can't seem to steer my car very easily without lifting it up though, and it always feels like I'm about to snap the long axles that go all the way into the front steering. The main steering wheel also can't align fully with the wheels direction and isn't a good indicator for the really short steering limit. I was also disapointed with the suspension. I bought mine second hand and I suppose nearly 2 decades of use has worn the shock absorber pieces. My car does not spring back up until I push it down close to the ground, and even then the springs do not decompress much at all. This might be true to a real car, but isn't fun on a toy car. I think the wheels having to hold up more weight due to the weak suspension is also causing difficult steering. This won't be an issue though if your shock absorbers are new though! I suggest decoupling all 6 of the springed pieces (suspenisions and doors) if you're putting the car away, to prevent them from getting soft. This car is still worth getting if you love how it looks and enjoy many moving parts! It's got nearly everything a good off road car needs, AND this one looks far nicer than newer Lego cars in my opinion and actually allows you to see the insides move and spin.
