The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is a 2019 American computer-animated musical adventure/comedy film and a sequel to The LEGO Movie. It is written by Raphael Bob-Waksberg, produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and directed by Mike Mitchell. The film released in theaters on February 8, 2019. After the destruction of Bricksburg, Emmet and Lucy visit the Systar System and must stop Rex Dangervest from creating an event known as Armamageddon.

Contents

The film's story picks up after the events of The LEGO Movie and begins with a scene, where Finn is told by his dad that Legos are now appropriate for his sister. Emmet and his friends sees Duplo aliens visiting Bricksburg, announcing their plan to destroy Bricksburg. Emmet builds the aliens a heart as a token of friendship, but they eat it and ask for more. Emmet, Lucy and all of the Master Builders believe this as it was nothing more than a attack in Bricksburg. All of the aliens destroy Bricksburg. After President Business leaves for golf, Emmet tries to reassure Lucy that "everything can still be awesome". Just moments after causing damage to Bricksburg, all of the Duplo aliens leave to go back home and all LEGO Justice League characters leave too. Wyldstyle notices a stairgate which allows it to shrink over the citizens of Bricksburg, including the Master Builders, making it official that according to Lucy, "it wasn't awesome".

Bricksburg is now destroyed, abandoned, and attacked by the Duplo aliens. As a result, it was known as Apocalypseburg, created by Finn. Most of the people in Bricksburg have been severely damaged by the Duplo aliens. The Justice league left to find Duplo, and they had to "grow up" and become tougher in a harder world.

The only exception is Emmet, who is still upbeat and optimistic. When Lucy attempts to teach him how to brood, Emmet reveals a visionary nightmare of an impending "armamageddon". Afterwards, Emmet takes Lucy to surprise her with a new, cute house he built for the two of them. However, Lucy warns him that such a cute house will attract more aliens. Immediately after they see a shooting star, which turns out be a Metal DUPLO spaceship. Emmet, Lucy and Unikitty rush through into the abandoned Bricksburg to see what's going on. At the back of the Bricksburg sign, the three of them discover a blue-eyed spaceship, which destroys the Bricksburg sign and follows after them, Emmet, Wyldstyle, and Unikitty escape the ruins of Bricksburg.

The blue-eyed spaceship attacks Apocalypseburg, and everyone takes shelter behind a big gate. However, one of the exploding stars becomes stuck in the gate right before they close, prompting Emmet to briefly open them to rescue the star. As he does, the ship's commander sneaks into the shelter. The commander turns out to be General Sweet Mayhem, who invites the leaders of Apocalypseburg to a matrimonial ceremony in her home galaxy at 5:15. When they refuse, Sweet Mayhem captures everyone, except Emmet and takes them away. Emmet tries to provide a sound reason for the Master Builders to do something to save Lucy and the rest of his friends, but they refuse to help. So Emmet rebuilds his cute house into a rocketship to pursue Mayhem, Lucy, Benny, Batman, MetalBeard and Unikitty, all of whom end up in a castle owned by the shape-shifting queen of the "Systar System", Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi. Wa'Nabi is able to brainwash Emmet's friends into accepting the happiness of her colorful universe, demanding Batman to marry her as his very own way to unite the Lego and Duplo worlds. Only Lucy remains skeptical of Wa'Nabi's plan and Mayhem takes Lucy to Planet Sparkles, where Balthazar takes her to a spa, which reveals Lucy's real hair color, Neon Blue and Fuchsia.

Emmet passes through the stairgate and runs into Asteroids and nearly collides with one, but is saved in time by rugged adventurer Rex Dangervest. After hearing Emmet's story, Rex offers to help and takes him to the Systar System. Emmet and Rex go to Harmony Town in order to see the characters that are now in the Systar System, but they flee after being chased by them. After escaping from the DUPLO brickyard, Emmet quickly reunites with Lucy and they discover a plan of Armamageddon. As the wedding starts, Emmet, Rex, and Lucy divide into groups to somehow carefully obstruct the event. However, Lucy is pushed away by Mayhem, who says that the wedding prevents Armamageddon. At the ceremony, Wa'Nabi accepts her true form: the heart that Emmett tried to use for the Duplo invaders. Realizing that Rex is the villain, Lucy tries to stop Emmet, but with prompting from Rex, Emmett destroys the space temple. In the real world, Finn, after finding that his little sister Bianca had stolen his Lego figures, has taken her creations.

Emmet tries to save Lucy but is taken by Rex, who reveals he is a version of Emmett from the future; Rex experienced the same events: This happened because Emmet crashed into the asteroid right before Rex swooped in to save him, but Rex didn't exist yet. So, he had crashed and fallen into planet Undar of the Dryar System, under the dryer in the human world, forgotten by his friends and Finn, where he had been alone for years with no one coming to save him. This loneliness and angriness Is what caused him to eventually gain control of his own body. He changed his clothes, name, and he became Rex Dangervest. Building the Rexcelsior, Rex goes back in time to follow a group of velociraptors and he creates a time machine before traveling back to the present to save Emmett from the asteroid. Meanwhile, at the same time, Rex manages to save himself from going through that anguish. Believing that Rex has plans for Armamageddon, as in "our mama gets in", Emmet discovers that Finn, angered, smashes Bianca's creations, causing Bianca to argue with him. Their mother walks in during their fight and, because she had to step in over the years since the first film, and now, fed up with their fighting, tells them that enough is enough. Their mom forces the two of them to throw all their Legos into the Storage Bin as punishment for their arguments. This is the true Armamageddon. Back in the Rexcelsior, Emmet refuses to abandon his friends, but Rex throws Emmet under the same dryer he ended up in, and he continues to exist. In the Lego universe, the world breaks and crumbles apart and all the characters get sucked into the Bin of Storaji. Lucy ends up in the storage bin with the other characters.

After Lucy and the other LEGO characters sing a sad version of Everything is Awesome and gets Finn's attention, Finn and Bianca decide to play together. In the Lego universe, Lucy rallies the others to help her escape the Storage Bin. Lucy Rescues Emmett from Rex and destroys his time machine. When Rex realizes that Lucy came back for Emmett, like no one had ever done for him, he seems to reconcile with his grief and then starts fading away. Emmett wants to save him, but Rex says that it's okay and fades from existence. it is an unknown what happened to Rex after Lucy rescued Emmet.

Finn and Bianca's mother sees them playing together and calms down, presumably returning their toys. Apocalypseburg and the Systar System are merged to create Syspocalypstar. Benny switches helmets with Mayhem. President Business returns from golf, telling Emmett that he did a good job fixing everything until Benny flies by him, causing him to get fire on his head. After running into a firework shop, President Business is ejected from the universe by fireworks and hurled out of view. Lucy rebuilds Emmett's home and they move in.

Lucy gifts Emmett with the original album of "Everything is Awesome", revealing that she co-originated the song. Emmett and Unikitty gasp in shock, ending the film.

as Emmet, Rex Dangervest as Batman as Lucy as Benny as MetalBeard as Unikitty as Watevra Wa'Nabi as Sweet Mayhem as Ice Cream Cone as Superman as Green Lantern as Wonder Woman as Alfred Pennyworth as Finn as Bianca as Aquaman as Larry the Barista as Velma Dinkley as President Business as Mom as Zebe as Lex Luthor as Balthazar as Himself as Himself

In the film, Vitruvius‘ Ghost and Bad Cop/Good Cop do not have any lines, though they can be seen making cameos.

Trivia

  • The movie was delayed twice, previously being scheduled for May 26, 2017, and May 18, 2018. It did not come out in 2017 because The LEGO Batman Movie was released that year.
  • In the scene where Emmet buys coffee, the names of all the actors who have played James Bond are heard except Timothy Dalton. They are Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.
  • During the song, "Gotham City Guys", some of the actors who have played Batman are referenced. They were Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, Adam West, George Clooney, and Val Kilmer.
  • Unikitty has a different design from the first movie, but the old one can be seen in promotional images for this movie.
  • Also during "Gotham City Guys," the first few notes of Danny Elfman's score for Batman (1989) can be heard. The musical phrase gets remixed repeatedly during his solo.
  • The act of Finn destroying Bianca's reception cake could be a reference to Ralph destroying Fix-It Felix Jr.'s 30th Anniversary cake from Disney's Wreck-It Ralph.
  • In the scene where Emmet discusses going to the Systar System, Harley Quinn says it would be a 'suicide mission'. This, along with her Apocalypseburg design, are references to Suicide Squad. can be seen during a part in "Not Evil".
  • When all of the LEGO creations are in The Bin of Storajj, they sing a sad version of Everything Is Awesome (Everything's Not Awesome).
  • When Rex (Chris Pratt) introduces himself to Emmet (also Pratt), the latter is confused by Rex saying his occupations, which are actually an amalgamation of Pratt's various characters:
    • a galaxy defender (Star-Lord/Peter Quill from Guardians of the Galaxy)
    • archaeologist (in reference to rumors that he could portray Indiana Jones in a future movie)
    • cowboy (Joshua Faraday from the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven)
    • raptor trainer (Owen Grady from Jurassic World).

Spoiler alerts follow in the next points.

    • Rex Dangervest's comments about having a chiseled jawline hiding under baby fat are a reference to the physical changes voice actor Chris Pratt went through preparing for his role in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).
    • At the very end of the film, Dad says (off screen), "Honey, where are my pants?". This was the title (and catchphrase) of Emmet's favorite show from The Lego Movie (2014).
    • During one of the early live action scenes of Finn and Bianca fighting over their toys, Finn can be heard to say "I'm crafting a narrative involving time travel. ", foreshadowing events in the movie.
    • Rex seems to have some level of meta-awareness when he says to Emmet that everything that's happening isn't real and is just a metaphor for the loss of imagination in the mind of an adolescent.
    • At the wedding, Emmet jumps over the rim of the pyramid shaped planet while Rex stays on it while they're talking. This makes it appear as Emmet is standing at a lake talking to its mirror image, which foreshadows that they are different versions of the same person.
    • At one point in the movie, Emmet says "let's go save our friends" to Rex Dangervest, but at this point Rex hasn't met any of them yet. Since the audience have yet to learn that Rex is Emmet from the future, meaning this could be a foreshadowing of that reveal.
    • This is the first movie in which Chris Pratt acts as the antagonist.
    • When Lucy meets Emmet near the wedding, she asks him if he drew stubble dots on his face. This is a reference to the previous movie, where Bad Cop drew a Good face on the blank part of his face using a permanent marker, after it was destroyed by Lord Business when he refused to "Kraglise" his parents.
    • The Welcome to the system system song sequence was originally longer, but was shortened because people probably would have found it annoying to their ears.
    • There was also a 2 part scene during the sequence where Wyldstyle goes through the vents and sees all her friends ”hypnotized” and then She looks around the room and finds Wonder Woman’s lasso, Aquamans tridents, And Superman’s Crystal which reveals a message in which he says “Whoever hears this message, everyone is singing and dancing, and not acting like themselves. I think a may be next. The queen is building some space Castle for some ceremonial ceromony or something. The Only way to save us is to blow up the heart of the temple, steal the cinematics and hope they fall into the right hands, destroy the ceromony, and save us all” And them it cuts. Later near the ending of the film, superman reveals that he made a new message saying “ok guys disregard the previous crystal, the Queen is cool and they just wanna be our friends, alright bye”. This was possibly cut because it would ruin The flow of the flim.
    • After The Wyldstyle Vs General Sweet Mayhem Sequence, There was an Alternate Choice where either Lucy saves General or Its the Other way Round. Despite Being Significantly Shorter, The Mayhem save Lucy choice was better because mayhem can fly. This was Probably Cut because Mike Mitchell Thought it would be more heartwarming if lucy saved mayhem rather than what was alternatively their plan.
    • There was also a Extended version Of The scene On the Rexelsior, where rex Dangervest tells emmet to pick which planet they think their friends are captured on. after he picks a planet, Radical Emmet Xtreme Tells emmet to yell “Everyone Suit up!” But was Probably Cut for time.
    • The End Titles Aren't seen In the credits, but it can be seen in the plot.
    • The end credits are supplemented by what seems to be a very advanced LEGO contraption.

    Contents

It's been five years since the first film's events. As the story continues, Finn's younger sister Bianca has started taking some of his LEGO creations and other toys from the sets in their basement along with her own set of Duplo bricks to play with in her own room.[9] Metaphorically, in the LEGO universe, the Duplo invaders have turned Bricksburg into a post-apocalyptic wasteland named Apocalypseburg and continue to invade periodically. The ordeal has made most of Apocalypseburg's citizens hardened, but Emmet remains upbeat, wanting to move into a dream home with Lucy. However, Emmet is troubled by dreams of a pending "Our-Mom-Ageddon".

General Sweet Mayhem, the leader of the Duplo army, arrives in Apocalypseburg and announces that Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi of the Systar System intends to wed Batman. Mayhem's forces kidnap Batman, Lucy, Benny, MetalBeard, and Unikitty, taking them to the Systar System. Batman is taken to Wa'Nabi, where he eventually finds that the Queen helps satisfy his emotional validation and proposes marriage. The others are placed in environments designed to tempt them. The others each fall for these temptations, but Lucy refuses to accept hers, an endless attempt to brainwash her with catchy pop music.

Emmet converts his dream house to a spaceship to give pursuit. En route, he is saved from colliding with an asteroid field by the rugged adventurer Rex Dangervest. As they continue on to the Systar system, Emmet begins to take on several of Rex's mannerisms, hoping to impress Lucy. When they arrive, they evade capture by Wa'Nabi's forces and join with Lucy. Rex helps them develop a plan to rescue their friends, which involves switching off the pop music that is brainwashing the others, while Emmet will destroy the reception cake encased in a temple to stop the wedding. As Lucy fights Mayhem to get to the music, she learns that the Systar System was never meant to be antagonistic to Apocalypseburg but instead tried to establish peace between them and simply failed at communicating this well. Lucy tries to stop Emmet from destroying the temple, but Emmet, facilitated by Rex's manipulations, destroys the temple anyway. This creates a hole in the LEGO universe, and Wa'Nabi warns them all the Our-Mom-Ageddon is upon them all.

In the real world, the act of destroying the temple is represented by Finn angrily destroying Bianca's LEGO creations. Hearing them bicker, their mother orders them to put the LEGOs into storage. Emmet tries to stop them but is prevented by Rex, who reveals he is an embittered version of himself from the future. After being neglected for years underneath the dryer after crashing in the asteroid field, he time-traveled back intending to deliberately bring upon the Our-Mom-Ageddon as revenge. When Emmet tries to fight back, Rex knocks him under the same dryer, ensuring that he would continue to exist. Lucy rallies the others into escaping from the storage bin and brings them back into the LEGO world. Emmet and Lucy overpower Rex and destroy his time machine. Realizing that Emmet being saved by Lucy means he won't end up becoming him, Rex's timeline, and therefore Rex himself, is erased from existence.

Wa'Nabi and Batman finally wed, represented by Finn and Bianca reconciling and agreeing to play together again. Their mother returns their LEGOs, averting Our-Mom-Ageddon. The LEGO universe is transformed into a mishmash of Apocalypseburg and the Systar System called "Syspocalypstar," which is peaceful. Emmet's dream house is rebuilt, and Lucy reveals that she was one of the original artists of "Everything is Awesome," as Emmet gasps in response, closing the film.

    Production

    Development

On February 3, 2014, Jared Stern was hired to write the sequel, along with Michelle Morgan. On March 12, 2014, Deadline reported that animation co-director Chris McKay would direct the sequel with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as producers. On April 10, 2014, it was reported that McKay wanted to have more women in the sequel than men. On July 28, 2014, it was reported that Chris Pratt wants to return to reprise his role as Emmet. It was also reported that Will Arnett might return to reprise his role as Batman but had not decided yet.

In October 2014, Warner Bros. scheduled The Lego Batman Movie for 2017 and The Lego Movie 2 for May 25, 2018. On October 25, 2014, it was reported that Lord and Miller had signed on to write The Lego Movie 2. On October 30, it was announced that Australia-based animation studio Animal Logic was in talks to produce the next three Lego films (though the deal was not finalized at the time), and the New South Wales government would make financial contributions to all the films. On November 12, during an interview with BBC News, Lord and Miller revealed that there would be more female characters featured in the film.

On February 24, 2015, the sequel was titled The Lego Movie Sequel, and Rob Schrab was announced as the film's director, replacing McKay as director as he was scheduled to direct The Lego Batman Movie instead. By November 2015, Miller announced that the first draft of the script was completed. Subsequent rewrites were provided by Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Dominic Russo, and Matthew Fogel. By February 2017, Schrab had been replaced by Mike Mitchell, reportedly due to "creative differences". Production started in Canada on October 2, 2017. In an interview with Collider, producer Dan Lin confirmed that Lord & Miller were rewriting the script during production.

The film is dedicated to Charlie Miller, Christopher Miller's mother, who died on December 27, 2018, before the film was released.

    Writing

The Lego Movie 2's narrative starts after the first film's events, just as Finn's toddler sister Bianca starts to play with Duplo blocks and tries to take over Bricksburg. Bianca has taken more of the Lego sets to incorporate into her own creations in the intervening years. The animation team recognized that girls would likely use Lego bricks and incorporate other materials, such as fabrics and paper, creating a challenge for their rendering team. They wanted these elements to appear as if a child was manipulating them through their stop-motion animation process. They explored multiple design styles for each playset that is within Bianca's room, the "Systar System", and developed new animation approaches for some of these styles, including using fewer frames as in inbetweening.

They also incorporated the Lego Friends line of toys aimed at girls, including mini-dolls like General Sweet Mayhem. However, unlike traditional Lego mini-figurines, the Lego Friends' mini-dolls do not have the same articulation, for example, having no separate leg movement or wrists that rotate. The production team, working with Lego, did not want to create walking and movement patterns that did not match the articulation the real figurines could do and came up with creative solutions for animating these in the film. This also created a challenge for at least one song and dance number; production brought in a choreographing team to help plan out the dance considering the restrictions of movement for the mini-figures. For Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi, the production team decided to simply assign a pile of random Lego bricks for her but required each of the forms that she could shape-shift into used only those bricks from that pile.

Among a concern between the creative leads was how to represent the Lego universe. Miller stated that they see each of the Lego films taking place in a child's mind, with both The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie occurring within Finn's mind. With The Lego Movie 2, both Finn and Bianca's imaginations drive events, and the creators opted to leave parts of the film vague if the scene was based on Finn's version, Bianca's version, or some combination. However, in some scenes, they wanted to be clear that Finn or Bianca's view influenced the events and thus provided clues such as the type of dialogue given by the main characters to figure out whose imagination was at work.

Among the mini-figures within the film will be one based on Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Lord and Miller had considered figures that would be unexpected within the film, with Ginsburg as one of their ideas. They received Ginsburg's blessing for this appearance, though she did not perform any voice work for this role. Subsequently, the Ginsburg mini-figure will be made as part of the movie's toy line.

    Casting

On March 23, 2018, it was reported that Tiffany Haddish had been cast in the film to voice a new lead character, while returning actors would be Chris Pratt as Emmet, Elizabeth Banks as Wyldstyle, Will Arnett as Batman, Channing Tatum as Superman, and Jonah Hill as Green Lantern. Stephanie Beatriz and Arturo Castro were announced to be part of the film on June 4, 2018. Castro was replaced by Richard Ayoade in the final film. During San Diego Comic-Con 2018, it was announced that Pratt would also voice a new character in addition to Emmett, Rex Dangervest, who is based after Pratt himself, while Margot Robbie would reprise her role as Harley Quinn from the DC Extended Universe, replacing Jenny Slate from The Lego Batman Movie. In November 2018, Maya Rudolph joined the cast. In early January 2019, it was revealed that Jason Momoa would reprise his role as Aquaman from the DC Extended Universe. Gal Gadot was to also reprise her role as Wonder Woman from the DC Extended Universe, replacing Cobie Smulders from the previous film, but Smulders ended up returning shortly before the film's release.

Daniel Radcliffe was originally set to voice a look-like of his iconic Harry Potter character known as Larry Potter, but his scene was ultimately cut. It was revealed by Mike Mitchell that Radcliffe's cameo was deleted due to not wanting to risk anything that would upset the Harry Potter fandom. The character was replaced by Larry Poppins (another look-alike character based on a British media icon).

    Critical response

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 85% based on 202 reviews, with an average rating of 7/10. The website’s critical consensus reads, “While it isn’t quite as much fun as its predecessor, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part fits neatly into an animated all-ages franchise with heart and humor to spare.” On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 65 out of 100, based on 45 critics, indicating “generally favorable reviews”. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of “A–” on an A+ to F scale (down from the first film’s “A”), while those at PostTrak gave it an average of 4 out of 5 stars; social media monitor RelishMix noted online responses to the film were “great”.

Jesse Hassenger of The A.V. Club called the film “lovable”, giving it a grade of B and writing “Like Brad Bird’s recent Incredibles 2, it follows up a dazzling animated original (all the more dazzling for earning that designation despite being based on a toy line) with some big ideas that don’t cohere with the same streamlined magic as its predecessor.” TheWrap’s Yolanda Machado commended the screenplay and directing and wrote that the film “expands on the original’s premise, adding new worlds and characters to the growing LEGO universe, while also crafting a story that is timely, inventive, hilarious and perfect for all ages.”

Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly says that while it was better than most other films, it didn’t recapture the surprise of the first film, saying, “Everything is still awesome. Just a little bit less so.” For The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Rechtshaffen wrote that the film brought “little that’s fresh or funny to the interlocking brick table despite boasting a script penned by originators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.”

Critic Reviews for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part

Audience Reviews for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part

The Lego movie was a success thanks to the talented filmmakers. The sequel attempts to maintain their style, but Mitchell has a hard task competing with the first film. The issue with this film is the lack of originality, that made the original so great. The storyline is a little generic and they force too many jokes. The musical numbers a great again and they manage to finish the film on a very strong note. The core reason this film failed to ignite the box office was fatigue. They allowed two spin-off films to push ahead of this film. The film didn't have the same strength of the first, and entering a market with strong competition wasn't ideal. This was a good film and it's a shame the series will be rebooted. Maybe they could've stuck with the spin-off style of storytelling. 22/03/2020

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is an incredibly fun and exciting family film. When Ethan's friends are abducted by aliens he partners up with a rogue adventure seeker named Rex to rescue them. The writing is especially good and takes the series in an interesting direction. And it delivers a positive message, addressing some important issues in a lighthearted and entertaining way. Additionally, the humor is really well-done and delivers a lot of laughs. Also, the musical numbers are extremely energetic with a rich, colorful visual style, and the songs are very catchy (especially "Catchy Song"). A worthy successor to the original, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part delivers a hilarious adventure that all ages can enjoy.

If you may recall, the original Lego Movie was a bolt from the blue, a rude shock to the world of post-millennial animation. Just because your intention is to sell a product doesn't mean you can't have cutting commentary or take the piss out of what you are selling. Subsequent entries have not let me down. The Lego Batman movie was damn good, the Lego Ninjago outing was a decent rental movie, and this picture manages to follow up on the themes of the original and expand on them, albeit in a more predictable manner. We still get plenty of sharp writing from Phil Lord and Chris Miller; Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, and Elizabeth Banks are great as you'd expect; and the visuals, set pieces, soundtrack, and plethora of fun licensed material may encourage viewers to open up a crate of LEGO's and have at it. And the message is kind of interesting. If the original was about a father who really needed to loosen up, this movie is about his son needing to do the same. It's one of those rare modern CGI-filled kids pictures that has about as much to say to the parent as it does juvenile audiences. It's not perfect but it didn't need to be. An easy choice to entertain you and your family on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Maybe my expectations were too high, hell I even loved The LEGO Ninjago Movie, the one in this franchise most people seem to agree is pretty mediocre. But this one just didn't do it for me as much. Is LEGO Movie 2 bad? No, not by a long shot. I still give a positive ranking, but only marginally, and I'm a bit harsher on it than usual just because of the precedent this franchise has set and just how far the ball has been dropped here. If this was where the franchise had started, I'd say it was better than expected for LEGO, but still not great if I'm being totally honest. It falls into a lot of that sequel fatigue of the same, but not as good. They explore different worlds, but only a couple, and they aren't as crazy or interesting as the first one. There's more about the connection between the Lego world and the human world, but after the mindf*** ending of the first this time it just doesn't feel as organic. Yeah there's a nice bit about sibling relationships, but overall the human element just comes out a little weird this time around and raises some bizarre questions. The biggest downer though is the comedy, in that it's just not as funny. The first Lego movie was outright hilarious. This one, at best, is chuckle-worthy. There were 2 or 3 decent laughs, but for the most part it just got small smiles out of me. Having said that, it's still charming and the animation is still absolutely gorgeous. The characters are all likeable, new and old, and kids will definitely love it. It's a shame that it's such a massive step down from the first one, but with the bar set so high even a step down is still a decent movie.

It's not just some throwaway cash-grab movie that's made just for children; it's not the most revolutionary thing in the world either, but it did put a smile on this face from start to finish.

Ultimately, The Lego Movie 2 proves to be endlessly inventive and extremely funny - and there's more than enough for brick lovers of all ages to enjoy. For the most part, it seems that everything is still pretty awesome.

You can't really fault Lord & Miller and their team for going all out in an attempt to entertain us, but The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is more of an exhausting experience than a truly enjoyable one.

The Second Part is still a testament to the creativity that has blessed big-budget animation and children's programming in recent years-but everything can't be awesome forever.

I was surprised at how well-written and clever the script was. Because of this, I believe audiences of all ages can enjoy it due to the array of cultural references and adult humour.

Even if the story gets a bit too meta for younger audiences to truly grasp, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part will still thrill them with its non-stop action. And best of all, it will make your kids beg you to buy them Legos when the lights come up.

[W]hile the first movie threaded its pointedly ersatz ethos into a much grander milieu, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part keeps its ideas as separate as its characters.

The 2014 original was better as a one-time surprise that no one saw coming, rather than a building block for an entire franchise. . If "everything was awesome" the first time, everything is now just average.

I notice the absence of the spark, the sense of humor and the surprise effect that made the two previous films so entertaining. [Full review in Spanish]

The Lego Movie 2 is certainly a quality work as far as its pure entertainment value, but I wish the filmmakers has devoted slightly more screen time to what gave the first film its heart.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part explores much of the same territory as its predecessor, but the returns have diminished somewhat.

With simple jokes, references and impeccable comic timing, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller keep the LEGO magic intact. [Full review in Spanish]

When the movie ignores the, "Look, it's your favorite childhood toy come to life! How cool is that?!" factor and concentrates on being funny, there are some really good moments.
